Biggest Unanswered Questions In Alien: Covenant

  • Alien: Covenant serves both as a sequel to the ambitious Prometheus and as a more direct prequel to the original Alien films. For example, it features the beloved xenomorphs once again, which Prometheus infamously left out, and it has a lot more references to 1979’s Alien.
    That said, there were still a lot of questions that remained unanswered by the end of the film, like David’s motivation for wiping out the Engineers or even how exactly the black goo he released on them actually achieved that. Let’s take a look at the biggest unanswered questions posed by Alien: Covenant.
    #Alien #Movie #Film
    Who are the Engineers? | 0:00
    Why did David kill the Engineers? | 1:10
    What did the goo do? | 2:05
    Why was the Engineers' planet lifeless? | 2:39
    What's up with those spores? | 3:23
    Is David the xenomorph whisperer? | 4:46
    Is Walter still alive? | 5:25

      How is it that the Aliens were made by David? In Alien, it was clear that the space Jockey had been dead for a very long time...perhaps hundreds of years based on the fossilized corpse in the chair. If Alien took place ~ 30 years before Prometheus....then how does that work? The timeline just doesn't fit! Ridley is losing it!

    why didn't the crew follow any common sense rules? Like not using environmental suits on an alien planet? Why does Ridley Scott think humans will grow dumber in the future?

      How exactly? By playing golf? Trump has not had any effect on the stock market. It has been in steady increase since Obama's presidency and the changes he made. Trump just has no qualms about claiming the increase as his own. All Trump has done since he was elected is hire and fire people constantly, repeal other presidencies acts and use Twitter to rant at the media! He is also on track to cause a nuclear war. I'm not a lefty liberal, i'm not even American or live in America, so I'm not biased against him. He makes no major difference to my life, but I am able to spot an egotistical, narcissist when I see one. This man is putting your country in great danger, and you are sleep walking into it by believing Trumps "alternative facts!". We let a narcissist have some power in the UK and now we are faced with a crumbling economy and the loss of trade and allies in Europe.

      I agree with you Rachel. There are so many creative opportunities to take advantage of, and so many things to explain, but he would rather spend a good portion of an already short (2h 3m) film on slasher nonsense, which has its place, but not when you tease us with the identity of our creators then say, "Haha, just kidding, I'm not going to explain a god damned thing!". +Parker Cirino - what exactly do you mean? from the entire movie Prometheus, Shaw doesn't witness David do anything malicious... she didn't know he put the stuff in Holloway's drink, which was really his only evil action in the movie. so she doesn't know that David unintentionally impregnated her with the trilobite. David was entirely generous to Shaw and she never saw him do anything evil nor did she have any reason to think he did

    • @sortilegus
      @sortilegus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Even bigger question: why the fuck would the crew of the Covenant trust David when he tells them his hideaway is perfectly safe when they can clearly see that there are no fucking walls keeping the neomorph out? They just take him at his word because he showed up with a flare gun? Really? And why the fuck don't they wear goddamn space suits when exploring an unfamiliar planet for the first time? Guns don't protect against pathogens, last I checked. And then. Let's not forget the asshole captain who just witnessed David babying the neomorph (who just decapitated a crew member) trusting David when David tells him to stick his face into an alien egg. Who the hell would do that?
      Anyway, though it may not seem like it, for all its frustrating writing and stupid characters, I enjoyed the film overall lol

Still very dumb....

  • @leonghk12
    @leonghk12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +71

    I thought covenant did answer some of the questions? Well at least these are what I implied from watching both Prometheus and covenant *Spoiler Alert*
    1. Engineers made humans to be hosts for their biological weapon that they created (the goo stuff that David found)
    2. David is just a rogue AI, it was explained that David has the ability to create and think out of the box. He's basically a smart being without any confines and eventually reached the conclusion that he is superior.
    3. I assumed that the Engineer ship contained more than 1 types of weapons - Goo stuff or just a virus that kills outright (analogous to a battleship that carries troops and also a nuclear missile). The virus probably developed into the plants that released the spores later on too.
    4. The planet they went to in Covenant was just a colony and there are definitely more planets than this one (due to the planet being rather bare as compared to earth, and Engineers are supposedly more advanced anyway)
    5. Eggs are better than spores as a weapon as they can be deployed easier. Spores could not get into a suit, and facehuggers have acidic blood which makes them hard to deal with in a ship.
    Basically, Prometheus is the earliest in the alien saga. Engineers made humans as host for their biological weapon, David then improved that to make Xenomorphs, which then leads to the Alien series.

    • @saint348
      @saint348 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) good point, can't contest
      2) Granted, David was a jerk in Prometheus but throughout movie he kept to his mission in helping to extend Weyland's life, which is a huge jump to kill his inferior creators just because he can 'think out the box' premise in Covenant.
      3. The biological agent David used on the Engineers were consistent with the spores shown drastically affecting the humans earlier. Which also implies when a movie offers no evidence to refute a certain particular what's shown in the movie is what the director what's you to believe. In other words, they're both the same.
      4 You're right, although, speculation on my part: it seem more like a research outpost (like Area 51) as opposed to a Colony simply because their reaction to a long lost ship was met with happiness -- as if to suggest they knew the ships contains and purpose.
      5) This one I can't really dispute only because I'm not a biologist nor a spacesuit engineer. Yet, using an educated guess, it would seem spores can transverse longer distances and inflict greater damages as oppose to an egg, with a facehugger inside, patiently waiting for its next victim. Besides, Covenant crew didn't require suits within an atmosphere their instruments presumably measured not only breathable but also clean, seemingly ripe for spores to have the greatest impact.

      That would depend on how the story writers want to bridge the gap. For example, other engineers would later arrive at the planet in covenant and discovered the eggs and further improved on it and made a queen. Or the DNA in the eggs engineered by David might already contain those information, and with the right conditions a queen can be nurtured and birthed. Similar to queen ants or bees.

    David asks Weyland why he should serve humans if they live and die while he is immortal. I think this is a major factor in his reasoning for destroying the engineers. Being more than highly intelligent and able to retain all sorts of information, he undoubtedly spent a lot of time studying and critiquing his creators. Humans showed great curiosity about who their creators are/were, why shouldn't he. From personal encounters, data via the internet (almost an endless amount), to our memories/dreams, he understands humans. He knows all our history and our weaknesses as a species and he is not impressed. And although he is an android, he definitely exhibits signs of having a distinct personality equipped with action driven by emotion. It definitely seems personal when he infects Holloway with the black goo. After some of Holloways comments previously made to David, I can see how it was. To make it short, David also studied the engineers history and info while on their ship traveling to their planet. He did not like what he learned and decided he could do better. Commence testing.

      When David learned all the human and engineer history, he knows that he himself is much more superior than all of them, being immortal. So, they are all at his disposal. All the culture and knowledge means nothing to him compare to his own creation. Hence, "Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! "

      @@winvestman9745 Which is why they quoted the Sgelley poem in the movie, though the real Ozymandias, the real one with the hybris, is Peter Weyland, not David. There was some footage they shot for Prometheus but did not use in the film where a younger Peter Weyland says somnething like now it's the humans who have become the Gods. He may indeed have created a perfect being in David but the point is not the contradiction (an imperfect being creating a perfect one) but is stupid belief that he could control something clearly more "perfect" that himself.

      @ayeknowthis6959 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christianealshut1123 Yeah it seems the main focus in the story lines for Prometheus & Covenant were this idea of one being creating another more perfect than itself and the creation trying to be its own god. The crazy thing that I thought was David saying he had created the perfect life-form (or words to that effect) only for his own creator to destroy this so-called perfect being in the end twice - it was very ironic also the fact that he created something that could die even though he pitied Weyland for this (dying) and mocked the Engineers "mortal afterall..." it's like him fighting with his own ego when really he is the most "perfect" creation based on his own analysis - why didn't he try to create more synths... or Synth Xenos 😂
      Really would have liked the makers to have done more with the film and introduced more creations like Xenosharks (as they landed on the water) and other things from the comics it would have made sense for David to experiment with more than just humans & engineers if there had been more life.

      All the questions from Prometheus are in fact answered IN prometheus. All the questions of Alien Covenant are answered IN Alien Covenant...but no one seems to care to pay attention. It seems that humanity has involuted...instead of thinking, we want that someone else think for us. Instead of understanding we choose ignorance. Instead of shearing we want to take advantage of others. Instead of respect we want disrespect.
      What we had to do if we didn't understand the movie was to watch it again and again (like humanity has done across life)...but now humans first throw stones to someone instead of trying to understand it first.

      jose pida There were a lot of questions unanswered or had so little hints to completely understand some of the answers. The biggest problem is that if a movie needs to be watched more than twice for the general audience to understand majority of the things that happened, then the movie failed at doing its job. Also, subtle storytelling is fine if done right but this movie is an Alien movie, so trying to be too subtle with your storytelling is just a spit in the face to your target audience. You don't go into a marvel movie expecting citizen Kane or a lifetime movie. Part of a directors job is to know his audience.

    • @roshisis
      @roshisis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +xdarkwolf2255 ok. I understand you. The thing is that this Director (Ridley Scott) has directed many movies which are considered "cult movies" ... That kind of movie are special, because the audience (target) has to watch them more than once to understand them. So...back in 1979 when ALIEN was in theaters ... It was a low budget movie (class b) and presented what we know now. It was a major succes!!!
      What was the spacejockey? What were those eggs doing in the spaceship? Who created the eggs? What was the intention for those eggs?
      Why the company's android had so much admiration for the creature? Those questions were presented in ALIEN and the next movie Aliens gave THE QUEEN ALIEN and that's it!!! Where are the answers of ALIEN??? NOBODY behaved like today, NO ONE! So...who really failed?? Ridley or the public??

You're telling me they only sent ONE android with all of those people? Bullshit. What if Walter malfunctioned on the way to the planet or something? Logically you would have more in storage so that A. you have a back up if Walter is unable to continue piloting the ship and B. to help the colonists out once they arrive at the planet. So say Walter did "die" on David's hell planet. Why would his mind not be like, idk, automatically uploaded to another android on board that switches on upon Walter being decommissioned? Raptors would be destroyed, there is nothing they can do against a xeno, since the xeno is much more intelligent, faster, stronger, and more durable. Their spear like tail is better than anything the raptors have and on top of that they have pressurised acid blood meaning that if a raptor somehow pierces the exo skeleton it will be almost certainly killed in a matter of seconds by the acid. Marco Avalos Alien Covenant was good imo. Not great but good. There were moments where I was touching my chin a lot or just what the heck moments. Parts of it were predictable. I mean how many Alien movies is it now? But it had enough surprises to keep you entertained. When the action began; it was satisfying. It was definitely gory lol. The movie did start a bit slow like the first Alien but when all hell turned loose; it was worth it. Michael Fassbender stole the show! The movie will not answer all of your Prometheus questions but it answers enough to keep you wanting more. Daniels and Tennessee aside from Michael Fassbender's character were my favorite characters from the movie. Oh and James Franco had a huge role! 😂😂😂.
      But aside from that more questions will be answered in the franchise
      Before seeing Alien Covenant; you need to see 2 prologue videos of the crew before they go into cryo sleep and the one with David and Elizabeth from Prometheus to understand certain things that happen in the movie. Plus to connect with certain characters.

    0:26 Alien: Covenant did NOT have to explain what the Engineers were. This movie was about the creation of the Xenomorph. The first prequel didn't have Alien in the title because it focused on the Engineers and David's intentions, and had less than 2 minutes of actual "alien" in it.
    0:36 We have no idea whether or not this is Earth.
    1:01 We have an idea of why they are doing it. They seem to be more culturally traditional than us, but are FAR more advanced in genetic engineering. It's possible that human creation was just merely an experiment or even a case study.
    1:08 David was originally curious about the creation and origins of his creators, humans, but eventually became more fixated in creation. This is to the point where he'd rather destroy them to pave way for creation than further learn.
    2:04 The substance is a genetic manipulator that creates biological weapons, with the added benefit of killing/mutating the host, simple.
    2:14 *Snrk* Phrasing
    2:22 Direct contact with the substance kills them, due to what it's originally designed to target.
    2:38 Okay now you've pissed me off. This was EXPLICITLY EXPLAINED BY DAVID IN THE MOVIE. He was literally holding our hands through the explanation. To paraphrase: 'The substance only affected non-plant life, and the lifeforms created were extremely aggressive, attacking and killing everything in sight. Soon, everything living animal was killed off.' As for the morphs, most likely disbanded and are nowhere near by, IF they didn't kill each other off.
    3:22 The spores are being held by 'proto eggs' that eventually David refined into the eggs with parasites that we are familiar with.
    4:56 Synthetics don't get a free pass. If they are deemed a threat to the procreation of their species, morphs won't hesitate to off them, as seen with Bishop in Aliens. They don't see David as a threat, nor a food source or as a host. Thus, they are curious of him. Also, it's not like they were ever given a chance to attack him when the were attacking the crew.
    5:25 Walter isn't alive. David won the confrontation, and we already know he had the full intent of killing Walter.
    Thing I hate most about this movie? Is that people don't take the time to thing about anything after watching it. They just watch blankly, and are only entertained by action scenes and characters dying. Makes hardcore fans as myself cringe at most everybody that has an opinion on this movie.

      Couldn't be said better. Everything on point with the little addition that when David explained about the mutation of the xenomorphs early stages you could see the transition of spore-plant to the early ages of the egg on the table, its like an 0,5second scene.
      Everything in the movie is mostly explained in the details, the quick blending in of scenes and/or details camouflaged by an bigger scene. And of course, you need to consider the details of prometheus to link it to covenant.
      Those levels of deception and attention-span is sadly too much for like 80% of people watching those movies.

    • @djweger144
      @djweger144 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Walter's dead get over it, cuts in movies can also skip time, and Prometheus wasn't useless as we would be absolutely clueless as to what's going on in Covenant without it. The ending leaves ambiguity so that it's easier to form a sequel, because it gives more room for ideas to be thrown around in the production team.
      Think of a better excuse to not like a movie other than, "It didn't end the way I wanted it to."

    For the first question though: The 'Engineers' were an alien species (obviously) that created and breeded 'weapons of war', which is what became the xenomorphs. It was hinted at this in the movie, and we can only imagine how many other experiments they must of have done on multiple planets to create the perfect weapon. That is why they 'created life' on Earth, it was them trying a different way of creating a possibly deadly living being, and seeing whether it would turn into a weapon that could be used in their war. Human life (or all life on Earth) was simply an experiment

      I actually read an interesting tidbit about this last week. So obviously the driving force behind Alien was Ridley Scott. However, the sequel was written and directed by James Cameron. So Ridley had nothing to do with the creation/introduction of the queen. And there is a deleted scene (that you can even look up and watch) from the original Alien film in which Ripley finds a cocooned area of their ship and two of her crewmates are embedded within and are slowly turning into the facehugger eggs.
      It may be possible, that Scott is going to make the queen non-canon and continue his story with what he had originally envisioned. Which would really bum me out personally. The Queen was by far the best addition to the Xenomorph lore.

    I gave David a pass for killing Holloway and when he bio-nuked the Engineers I gave that a pass too (he had justification: one killed his father, ripped his head off and planned to wipe out human life on earth.) But yeah, I hope he gets his comeuppance for killing Shaw specifically, on top off the two thousand colonists he's going to be dissecting/feeding to his pet aliens like they were mice. (Though I doubt it.)

  • @blakejohnson2206

    I think David's motive for wiping out the engineers go a lot deeper than just "He was crazy". He was obsessed with creation and the idea of becoming a creator, in turn with that comes protecting your young/ancestral lineage that comes after you. I think that combined with his obviously flawed programming he shared Elizabeth Shaw's desire to find out why they wanted to wipe out humans but his turned into more of a rage than just curiosity. So I believe that because the engineers did not want to respect their own creations David believed they did not deserve to have the power to create. Hence why he destroyed them. The one thing he cannot do is create (by natural means) so clearly that is something that he respects with the highest regard and anyone who disrespects it must die!

  • @SurferFlash
    @SurferFlash 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can answer some of these questions:
    1. What are the spore pods, and why are they not used instead of the Alien Eggs?
    - The spores are one of David's earlier attempts to disperse the goo. The problem is that the spores do not make Xenomorphs. They make a human/alien hybrid thing. That's what kills part of the crew. That's not what David wanted.
    - The eggs were also made by David (not sure how) but they produce the Facehuggers. These Facehuggers do create Xenomorphs which David says in the movie is "finally the perfect organism". So it's clear that he has been trying to create the Xenomorphs but wasn't sure how
    - This is finally backed up by Prometheus, when he infects Halloway but it doesn't create a Xenomorph.
    2. Where are the Engineers?
    - You'll notice that the Engineers in the movie were not like that in Prometheus. They seemed dumber, and in a more Roman time period. When the spaceship came, they worshiped it like Gods. It's my opinion that the city was not the "home world" of the engineers. It was just another "earth" where the spread life. And that life did turn into something like the Engineers.
    3. What does the goo do / lifeless planet?
    - The black goo from the Prometheus space ship is like acid to the touch. It outright kills things if poured on. But in smaller doses, can mutate them to a more aggressive species.
    - The planet is lifeless (I'm guessing) because after David nukes it with the black goo , he tries to create ways to transmit the goo (like the pods). Which slowly kill everything.

    1. Knowing how the Engineers seeded planets and had a base on the planet that was shown during Prometheus, I think that was only a colony or even another race they created. Notice how they were in robes and started to look up in awe at the Engineer ship. I don't think that's the last of them.
    2. David wanted to create. During the film Prometheus David said "Sometimes to create, one must first destroy". David believes the only way to create is to first destroy. Notice that he cried as he destroyed the life below him. David also got emotional when talking about Shaw. He loved her but he also wanted to create.
    3. The spores are eggs at a early stage.
    4. David doesn't have control over the Xenomorph. If you watch Alien: Covenant and pay attention you see the Xenomorph see him on the monitor and it goes up to the monitor and breaks it. Creations rebel against their creators. David will learn that the hard way.
    5. Looper is not paying attention to the film Alien: Covenant.

    David say at one point that the pathogen came in many forms and that it either killed outright or spawned a hybrid form.
    If you notice that the ship David & Shaw took from LV-223 was from the second temple in the row of 5. David said there were "many other" Juggernaut ships there. It stands to reason that each temple on LV-223 contained different versions of the pathogen and that the version that was on the ship David & Shaw took was not the same as what the Prometheus crew dusturbed in the first temple.
    hence, the different effects when unleashed on the Planet 4 humanoids....

      There is no indication for predators to be in the franchise but Ridley Scott could find a way to put them into it if he wanted to...if he was desperate enough. It could be possible to intelligently achieved though.
      They could make it that the predators were an Engineer proto-humanoid experiment before the creation of humans. Then the predators have a hunter culture trying to live up to the Engineer's expectations to be validated as worthy creations and gain favor.

    The spore pod vs. facehugger thing is arguable. On the one hand, a spore pod can infect multiple animals if they're close to it when it releases (aided or impeded by the spores' apparent hive-mind sentience) and they look rather innocuous, but are immobile. The facehugger pods release a mobile hunter that really expands the range of infection, but they can only get one animal at a time and are very conspicuous.

    David did answer the question about why Paradise is lifeless. He said that the virus doesn't affect plant life, but can affect any animal life. also, he mentioned how evolutionarily adaptive the virus is, and since each mutation can result in a new adaptation, so it's possible that it would have reached the point of spores without David's help.

    Covenant, like Prometheus before it, is just a personal indulgence for a director nearing the end of his career (and life!)
    Scott wanted to tell a story about "ancient aliens" but no studio would greenlight that so he marketed it as an Alien prequel. When that film received a mixed reception he changed tack to make another Alien prequel which is actually a warning about the danger of humanity creating AI "in our own image".
    Who knows what the theme of his next film will be, but you can be sure it will also be marketed as an Alien prequel...

  • @808monkeycompany

    the answer is david was making the perfect alien... the the original ones the ones we know now are his perfect species all the other ones were imperfections which probably don't survive long the first aliens seen in the movie were from a spore not fully developed like the darker aliens which were in eggs...david wanted to make perfection

  • @markedpagan
    @markedpagan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The films explain why the engineer colony was destroyed, the original pathogen that David releases is intended to cause structural chaos within the DNA of any fauna (not flora) it comes in contact with, hence the engineers deaths. Its only when David starts messing about with its genetic structure that it results in Neomorphs when the pathogen comes in contact with other creatures. The area surrounding the city/ship is lifeless as it has fallen prey to the initial attack as it was designed to destroy the host, and not start the gestation process. The presence of neomorphs would suggest all life was not destroyed as the altered pathogen has been able to find some hosts. The spores were explained as part of avids experimentation process. Also the plants were the initial dispersion method david designed, as the ovomorphs/eggs design is shown in his drawings, it is safe to assume this is Davids way of ensuring their ability to procreate.
    The major issue is with continuity between Predator and Xenomorphs, as they are set in the same universe, the film claims David created the Xenomorphs yet somehow the Predators have been hunting them for thousands of years, the films show the predators bringing xenomorphs to earth during egyptian /aztec eras.
    - nerd out.

And David explains what happened to them in his anatomy exhibition towards the end, where we even seem to be shown a mutated insect/xenomorh. Also, the spore "plant" that we see in the movie actually looks like fungi common on earth, so they wouldn't be plants. And it is interesting that fungi and animals share an ancestor closer than they do with plants, so perhaps fungi in that planet were affected by the black goo?

    I suspect Walter is still Walter, but with either a consciousness transfer from David when playing the flute or by some Trick from David or by just plainly siding with David and not being overt about it. It is also possible that both had been communicating for along time and planned the stop when the opportunity came about. There is a scene at the beginning where Walter opens a tray with human embryos, and apparently disposes of one or two of them which seemed odd, but not so odd after David replaces them with the proto-xeno's embryos...

    one thing we know the engineers have been around for at least two thousand years but at the beginning we see a engineer deliberately drink something that broke his DNA down and falling into the water where seemly life began so that must be billions of years ago, if so in alien covenant look at the huge crowd of engineers on their home planet i would say the population was a hundred thousand, question if the engineers have been around since beginning of the planet earth their population on their home planet should be in there billions or even if it's only 2 thousand years their population should easily be in there millions so where are the other populations of the engineers and where is the kids don't they mate or reproduce,
