New for 2022 - The Brompton P Line

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 ส.ค. 2024
  • Brompton have released the P Line (or Performance Line) bike for the 2022 range
This time it's not just colours or small changes
(It is available in storm grey or midnight black - both are a metallic finish)
It's almost like a new bike - here we run through all the details (unless we missed some!) - even the box is different
We were going to compare to a C Line (Core Line) bike - but there was so much different it seemed like it would be eating into valuable time to spend with this new bike!
There are so many changes we split the video into the following sections:
    0:00 | Intro
    0:24 | Our top 5 new features
3:42 | Teaser of all changes
4:00 | Run through of features
    12:16 | End
    12:36 | Outtakes
If we missed anything - please comment in the comments section
    Handlebar grips:
    Superlight foam 130mm lock-on - 42 g per pair
    Handlebars:
They are black … like all of the extremities - it is effectively a Black Edition (of course the black makes it harder to film!)
Available in low (previously S-type) , mid (previously M-type) and high bars (previously H-type)
    Gear shifter:
There is just the one shifter - on the left side
Because it’s a derailleur gear you should only change gear when pedaling
    Headset:
    Superlight - black aluminium
    Front carrier block:
It uses the standard Brompton front carrier block - not standard by default on the P Line
    Front Forks
These are standard Ti forks - as used on the CHPT3 - painted black
    Front mudguard:
    New design and new stays
    Front Wheel:
All new 20 spoke wheel with thinner rim profile
    Bolt through axle
    Tyres:
    Schwalbe one Black
Also available with the Continental Contact Urban - our current favourite
    Hinge clamps:
New (as used on the CHPT3) aluminium - black
New Chain catcher on main frame
    Saddle:
Superlight saddle with chromoly rails, carbon reinforced base and lightweight padding. Includes integrated carry handle and light mount.
    Pentaclip:
New and now compatible with carbon rails
    Carbon long lips
    Others short lips
Lower stop disk is now a lower stop device - with integrated cable guide
Seatpost clamp - now aluminium - black
Rear frame clip - now aluminium - black
Suspension block - new - and a new shape
    New roller wheels
Rear mudguards are new with new stays and a new roller wheel - for better rolling when folded
    Rear wheel:
All new 28 spoke rear wheel, with new rim profile
    New hub
    Gearing
    4 Sprockets
Gearing 11-13-15-18 Tooth this give a 163% range
    Chain
    10 speed hollow pin chain
New chain tensioner / derailleur (replacing the chain pusher)
    Video equipment: (for our ref)
    Sony A7C camera
    50mm lens
    Sony wireless microphone

This P line is exciting! As usual, you did an excellent job of articulating the differences between this and the C line. I'm doing some updates on my "old" 2012-2013 Brommie ... but I may stop short of where I'd planned to go and start putting money aside for a new P model. Thank you for the always excellent videos! :)

Maybe one day they’ll come out with what I and I’m sure lots of other people have been hoping for , a knobby tire version to make light off road excursions possible . I do it anyway but a wider tire would make it less sketchy 😁 It would be a real Explorer❗️ 🌎

the conti urbans do better than expected off-road, but then I've ridden kojaks off-road in summer (they fail totally in sandy surfaces). Standard marathons do the best all round off-road in my experience, but certain NCN trails in wrong conditions will be all sorts of wrong, whatever brommie tyre.

A challenge for any derailleur system on small-wheeled bikes is its proximity to the ground and the consequent assault from road dirt/grit/water. Please update us in due course how well the P Line 4-speed system fares in this regard 🙂
In context, on my 2018 M6L, it was the derailleur changer that very soon (within only a couple of winter weeks) gave me problems and a disappointment. However, this problem prompted me to come up with a home-brew solution - by making a bigger front mud flap. This reduces the amount of bad stuff getting to the critical parts of the mechanism. I cut a new flap from semi-stiff plastic such as one finds in the separators in some “ring-binder” folders. The plastic is a fair bit stiffer than the Brompton flap so it holds shape well, but not so stiff as to compromise the fold. My flap is 5cm longer than the standard flap which means it is 7cm clearance from the road rather than the yawning 12cm, and I find this is really effective at keeping things cleaner. This is something anyone could make up themselves. It also helps to keep my feet drier 🙂
A great vid btw, plenty of interesting and informative content, well produced! 👍

I’d love to know which parts are backwards compatible. Like the mudguards or roller wheels. Some of these changes look like genuine design improvements, not just weight saving measures.

The bearings on Brompton’s standard right-hand pedal are in my experience of poor durability. My solution has been to swap the right-hand pedal for something more durable. And given all the quirks of the Brompton anyway, any mis-match of pedal style/form is of little consequence really.
In contrast, the folding left-hand pedal seems to be well engineered with proper bearings! I am more than happy with the folding one🙂

I think this is a long awaited video :)
Is this "lower stop device" retro compatible with the traditional frame?
It seems that for this new stop to work properly in "shopping mode", an extended seatpost is a better choice to be able to push the bike when locked.

Bromptons are obviously the bees knees of small folding bikes. (actually have seen some other uber cool bikes in this category), however, purchased a Reid branded bike from a bike shop of that name in Melbourne for $349 AUD. I'm upgrading a few parts, and funnily enough going to fit BMX forks, stem and bars to it, and a 10 speed drive train and lighter wheelset to it. Even stock, the bike is okay.
I put it in the back of my Toyota Echo hatchback , drive to where I want to go, then whip it out, unfold it and ride it.
I'm rapt with my purchase and can slowly upgrade, yet still enjoy it in it's current form. Cheers!

    I purchased a P-line. Observations/changes made include:
1- The 3-roller design has poor rolling performance ( the 4-rollers rack is needed ).
2- The continental tires are the best option. Use Stans tire sealant for peace of mind, and 95 PSI for pedaling efficiency.
3- The four derailleur gears lack a lower gear that allows for fast speed. A front crank with a larger sprocket is needed.
4- The handlebar grips also need to be changed, too small for big hands.
    Thank you for your videos.

Excellent informative video. I feel that Brompton may be innovating TOO quickly. My amazing 2021 H6R now feels truly ancient. Then again, I am ancient, so we continue to be an excellent match. Most of my changes to the bike (Telescopic seat post, Lezine road drive pump hiding in the seat post, RAM mount for my phone, Brompton tool kit, inner tube hiding in the frame...) added more weight. I would probably do the same to the P. And so... I am perfectly happy, just feeling like my brilliant new Brompton, is now vintage... like me. Thanks as always!

very thorough. I wonder if a model will be made with a 44-tooth crank to reduce the low gear ratio a bit, hopefully making pedaling a little bit easier. I’’ve seen a couple models that did this, but not recently.

Congratulations on yet another great video! This is one of my favourite channels on Bromptons. I still don't own one, but I will probably get a Brompton in the near future. I had my mind set on a Explore C-line, but the P-line, despite its higher price tag, seems a great improvement. The only major concern I have is the 4 gears, which gives us a shorter range than the 6-gear C-line options.
How much missing the top and low gears (as compared to a 6 gear C-type) affects speed and climbing?
Is there any alternative to increase the gear range simply by changing the sprockets?
    Thank you very much.

    • @brilliantbikes
      @brilliantbikes  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks so much for your kind comments
You are not alone - it "seems" like the gearing isn't so good for many people
We plan in approx 1 week to try and compare the 3 / 6 / 4 speeds on a ride - the difficulty we are having is what to measure / compare
We could have a set distance - and compare how may revolutions it takes in each gear on each bike (we could use a gear calculator for that)
We could do a drag race and see when we spin out on each bike
We could do a steep climb and see if we can make it on each bike
but there is so much subjectivity
What would you like to see measured / compared?

    • @wlobianco
      @wlobianco ปีที่แล้ว

@@brilliantbikes , thank you very much for your reply. Perhaps a good test would be to try out the limits of the upper and lower gears. For example, to test the first gear on each model, perhaps the tester could start from a stationary position at the bottom of a climbing terrain and see how far or how quickly she/he could go in first gear. For the top gear, your suggestion of a race to see at which distance the tester spins out on each bike seems to be a good idea.
Anyway, this would be a very interesting video indeed!
