My oldest brother , 21 years my senior, was dying of cancer, and we would sit at his kitchen table drinking Jim Beam. We talked music, and he would get me to look up a lot of songs from his youth. This was one. Each song would reflect his feelings and say things that he couldn't muster. His dog Buster had died 20 years before, and his heart was raw with grief for years. Until the day his son died. He told me that day he had stopped mourning his dog. His heart was huge, and his life was filled with tragedy, but as he slowly wasted away, he held on to his dignity and any tears that surely were welling. We made a playlist of his favorite tunes. He knew it would be a way for me to revisit those nights. The Lord doesn't give you more than you can handle, they say, but he just might have pushed the envelope with my brother. Rest easy, Pat . 💔
This masterpiece, still hits hard about losing our 4 legged companions, that have left us and given us so much. Elevated both Jerry Jeff Walker and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band into deserved notoriety. Timeless song!
Mr. Bojangles always brings tears to my eyes when I hear the part of the "dog up and died; up and died. After 20 years, he still grieved." Sort of an "Old Yeller" moment. Beautiful song.
I love the nitty Gritty Dirt band and I meet John in 1969. John was my girl friend uncle, could I get any luckier. I was over visiting my girlfriend Patty and John came into the living room and ask if we would like to go see Carol King, I had a big smile and as when do we leave and he said now. So we got in there car and I believe the show was in Beverly Hills. We parked walked up to the door John waslked over to some one and we were escorted down to within four rows of the piano. That was one of the best days of my life. John is a classical banjo player and good doesn't come close. Thank you for the videos the bring back a lot of memories.
When I was a teen my parents bought me a radio that received AM, FM, TV and various short wave channels. I was listening one day and heard a channel from Australia quite clearly (I was in New York) and the announcer was fascinated by the name Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. After saying it about six times or so he played Mr. Bojangles. It must have been the first time he heard it. Afterwards he said " Wow, that was a really nice tune!"
Still a good looking man! I remember this song as a kid. And was is NC recently and there is a restaurant called Bojangles it brought back memories of this song and Group.
I love these guys, my husband loves them too, and our sons, we love all 3 Circle albums, and we have so much of their music, we last saw them in 2012, with our eldest son.
On this day in 1971 {March 28th} the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed "Mr. Bojangles" on the CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'... Four months earlier on November 21st, 1970 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #9 and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #2 on the Canadian RPM Tracks chart... Was composed and 1st recorded in 1968 by Jerry Jeff Walker, his version peaked at #77 on the Top 100 and #51 in Canada... May God bless Mr. Campbell...
I'm from Vancouver Island, and between Duncan,BC and Red Deer Alberta, I've seen these guys 7 times...they're as "Canadian" as an American band can be....and this is one of their best songs, always better live.
Me and a friend drove from a suburb of Madison WI to Des Moines after I called the rock line on the phone Damned good show I'm talking over 40 years ago and I can picture the band like it's today
When they played The Masters Musicians estival Somerset, Kentucky great music and really nice people down to earth I never forget it Linda Hasty they even shook hand with me!!!!
On this day in 1971 {May 29th} the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed "Mr. Bojangles" and "House at Pooh Corner" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Six months earlier on November 21st, 1970 "Mr. Bojangles" entered Billboard's Hot top 100; eventually it peaked at #9 and spent 19 weeks in the Top 100... And one month earlier on April 24th "House at Pooh Corner" entered the Top 100 and it reached #53 and stayed 13 weeks in the Top 100... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...
Great song, great performance. Been a fan of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band since this song came out so very long ago--I guess this could be considered a classic!! Thanks for sharing this video!
@RTStrongDog 53 years 4 me.(55 now but still remember).walked 3 siblings to school, then came home & protected me in the sandbox...my best bud! A semi didn't have breaks,he was at the bottom of a hill...buried him under a China-berry tree! We sold the house, the ppl cut it down, how sad! The my oldest brother bought it back...planted another tree 4 him.
We saw these guys at the Martin County Fair in Stuart, Fla, back in '92, as good live if not better. They will always be one of my favorites. One hot, with a bunch of talent, group.
Great song. How could this not put a smile on your face & bring a tear to your eyes. I watch Bill Robinson & Shirley Temple tap down the stairs every time they show it on TCM.
@cavemaster100 Remember the dogs name? "Sing, Teddy". I remember hearing this the night my grandfather died. This song, and My Sweet Lord were both big at the time, and it was 1971. Both songs still make me well-up if I hear them at night.
I just turned 59. When I was 16 I walked into a room & fell in love with my first love, Bob Webster, who was playing this song on his guitar. A year later we became a couple. This concert was in Victoria.... where Bob & I met. Would love to see him again. Christine Leonard was my name. Obviously, Bob Webster is a common name. Would really like to connect with him again....
I knew this song hearing Mr. Bob Dylan. I know it is quite old but just today, hearing in my car I noticed how beautiful is this song. Then I went to the internet to research about it and get its chords and lyrics. So I figured out how important is this song. So many people recorded it! I watched several videos here in youtube, and these guys have the best version! Thanks for presenting me the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band! Forgive me my ignorance about that, I am from Brazil, certainly if I live in USA I would know this band.
So glad I could introduce you to them! I have several more NGDB songs posted from this same performance ... all great quality like this one. You should definitely check my channel out, Flavio ... I guarantee you will find a few more gems that you had not heard before :)
Jeff Hanna has been the only constant in the nitty-gritty dirt band since they first started. The others have been replaced at some point, but not him. I applaud Jeff for hauling dirt since the very beginning.
Very nice, John took my girlfriend "Pattie" & I to see Carol King play on the strip in Hollywood in the early 70's so I've always liked the band. There was a huge line all the way around the building to get in but we walked right in as sat about 20 feet from her and her piano, no one else that was playing with her. It's one of the favorite memories of those days. Thanks, If you could find some video of the 60 & 70's that would be great. They also played in "Paint Your Wagon."
On this day in 1971 {March 28th} The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed "Mr. Bojangles" on the CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'... The day before on March 27th, 1971 was its last day on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; the month before on February 14th, 1971 it had peaked at #9 {for 3 weeks} and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100... Exactly three weeks after their 'Goodtime Hour' appearance on April 18th, 1971 their next release, "The House on Pooh Corner", would enter the Top 100 at #89, eventually it would reach #53...
Nice. I saw the 'Dirt Band at a free show at the University of Texas at Arllington in the 1970s. They put on a great show. Michael Murphy was supposed to be there, too, but canceled for reasons I cannot recall.
Everyone & their mother covered this jerry jeff walker song over the years - it seems like i heard him say in an interview once that it had made him 50 million $ over the years - must be the best of the best
I remember seeing the Dirt Band in L.A. (back when I lived there)...alsways a gret show...Hope they make it somewhere's near NorthWest Arkansas...(Fayetteville, Walmart AMP would be nice....^/^

I am so old I remember when these guys used to click their heels when they played this great JJ Walker song.
This masterpiece, still hits hard about losing our 4 legged companions, that have left us and given us so much. Elevated both Jerry Jeff Walker and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band into deserved notoriety. Timeless song!
Totally awesome song!
It truly is a masterpiece !
I just had to put my basset hound down last month just shy age 11. She and I shared a birthday. Tearing up right now. You are so right.
Oh, I know. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about my Saint Bernard who died in 1992.
This masterpiece will transcend time and space and races of people

RIP, Jerry Jeff Walker. This was your song, that put the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on the map.
I am really sad. A song I have always loved.
Unfortunately, Jerry Jeff got to the point where he refused to play “Mr Bojangles.”
Mr. Bojangles always brings tears to my eyes when I hear the part of the "dog up and died; up and died. After 20 years, he still grieved." Sort of an "Old Yeller" moment. Beautiful song.
🥺
Agreed. That part chokes me up every time.
Fantastic song and one of my all time favs.

The recording that includes the dog is mesmerizing. I can see the whole scene. Then the music washes in and takes over. I love it.

Live performances never give the quality of a recording studio but being able to watch the performers in a video almost makes up for it.
Think about my LA high buddy Robby. We both loved this song.
Hoping to see them this Month in Napa Ca.

The mandolin sets this apart IMHO. Also the fact that it appeals to your senses to the point I feel like I am in the cell with those guys.
Great cover!

My God, talk about the innocent age! I want to go home!!
