- Courtesy of the Clark Santee video archive, few songs have such impact as Jerry Jeff Walker's Mr Bojangles, a powerful song covered by Bob Dylan and Sammy Davis Jnr and delivered a global chart-topper for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. At the dawn of the Seventies, a new breed of American singer/songwriters emerged, redefining popular music with classic songs reflecting the times. Jerry Jeff Walker (seen here in 1969) remains rightly regarded as amongst the very best of the bunch.
What a voice.
I have listened to this song more times than I can count. But when I hear Jerry Jeff's voice, I stop what I'm doing and listen, just like it is the first time I have heard the best song I ever heard. I love this song, I love Jerry Jeff, I miss him greatly.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
Si
The original and best live performance ever...God bless your soul Mr. walker...
Masterpiece
Rest in peace good man
I was a kid but because Mom took me everywhere I got to see my Dad when he covered this in a basement bar in Phoenix (the Jolly Roger)- sang it and accompanied himself on a pared down drum kit. This one and Arlo Guthries City of New Orleans. Always gets me and reminds me of Dad, too. He just passed this time last year. Music is so powerful!
I hear you ... the memories that come from when you were young are released..and it's wonderful and awful. At the same time... my uncles were musicians who ran with many big names ..the stories they told and the songs they sang...I am from an area west of phx.. in the hills ..a truly dead end town..had to turn around where the road ended and go back the way you came from lol Tru story.. any way .. I feel you I really do..
@@JamesFolkers I'm from a small town over by superior ..
@@JamesFolkers yess sir at hwy 177 go east ..cross the divide ..pass Kennecott now known as El gtrupo Mexico I belive .. at the railroad track coming out of the mine after crossing mineral creek
. Turn right .. go till you come to the gila river after you cross the gila go left .. in about 3 miles the road will end .. riverside stage stop... me and about 300 other kids grew up there .. we are all still like family even tho it's a ghost town now ..I haven't lives there in over 40 years ..but ..it was a great place
Both great songs! Heartfelt memories.
He's just immortal for ever and ever
No one ever did it better than him!
Listen to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands rendition.
@@waynelitke4271it’s good but not better than the original imo
Well he wrote it
@@waynelitke4271I used to think the same thing
until I heard this one

Must have been around 1970 when we went to hear Jerry Jeff at an Ohio college. He was seated on a platform in a gymnasium & all of us sat on the floor. What a wonderful storyteller he was. Will never forget. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for sharing ❤
Fabulous songwriting. One of the best ballads ever written.
Extraordinary. Til yday I only knew of Sammy Davis Jnr singing this. This version by the composer is just beautiful, musically, lyrically and vocally.
Fabulous songwriting indeed.
But quite fast tempo to call it a ballad 🙂
Wow. Song-writting doesn't get better than this. So unique, so moving. And beautiful performance which gets better the more you listen to it. Such feeling. So sad, so true.
One of the best songs ever and sung so well by Jerry.
He wrote the song.
My uncle/godfather used to sing this song walking around his house. April 15th, 2005, Uncle Ken died. I always listen to this a few times around the anniversary of his death, and especially on that day. He was more of a father to me than my own father. And his being gone still hurts. And even if I'm in public, and this song plays, tears will fall from my eyes. ❤
I dont think I have ever listened to this song without having to wipe a tear from my eyes.
God. I love his voice. So… honest, clear, manly, but sweet. Damn. What a voice.
I was in the jail in texas in 1970 and I heard this song when I got out , never forget
Ohhh my....My father's favorite soundtrack....Was raised on
Jesse, John and Jesse.. Won't ever be any better...
Lets Lface it, the Nitty Gritty Dirt bands cover of the song helped put them on the map, not to mention Samy Davis Juniors version of it didn't do him any harm either, so the brilliance of Jerry helped them pay the bills, as well.
Absolutely
Made me cry not sure why, great songs and singers need no explanation 😢
Every time l hear this it reminds me of all the memorable great times with my dog.
I've always loved this song....still tears me up all these years later.
Bellissima!
Got to see Jerry in concert in 80's. Few people were shouting out requests and then someone shouted "All Along The Watchtower" . Jerry bent over laughing and had to share it with his band mates. So happy I got to see him live.
What a song...a great imagination-stimulating story about a charismatic man whom any of us could have met as we traveled through our lives. It is an enduring song, a true part of classic Americana and our long musical history.
It’s a true song..🥰🎶👊
Blokes like him shouldn't be allowed to die. irrespective of what sort of music turns you on this song he wrote and performed is simply a master peice by any standard.
He won’t in a lot of ways.
Yup - it's a master piece for all time.
Brilliant. This has a Mark Twain-Stephen Foster-Americana-poetry quality.
Only knew of Sammy Davis Jnr version if this. To hear the composer sing and play it is a pleasure. Beautiful song. Great performance.
Listen to the David bromberg 7 minute version
Perfect timing makes this song beautiful to play Jeff owns this song.
Great song! What a story he weaves! Beautiful perfomance by JJW.
I've been in love with this man since i was 16. I wasn't born when he wrote this son... Actually, I wasn't for another year from this video.
I fell in love with a cowboy 15yrs my Sr. He turned me onto JJW, and oh...that voice...I mean how could he not be a chart topper? Just intoxicating ♡Esp this song (tho covers did) Goodness, goodness-goodness his voice and swagga, smh, well yep. One of the top 5 voices, ever.
RIP Cowboy. Check my cowboy out up there...youll really dig him♡♡♡
Sweet story and memories.
Thank you for sharing.
The best to you.
Had a copy of the actual single 45 that came out on Atco records in " 69 ". This " live " version is far and away better than that. I've come back and watched this video countless times. Walker was just fantastic on this version. R.I.P.
Wow, this is before the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did their version of this song. The audience doesn't realize what they just witnessed.
I stumbled upon this and wow!!
BS
And JJW does it way better than the NGDB. Their hit version was all candied up.
Nor did he know what this song would become- a legend.
gorgeous man reminds me of my husband Larry Carrico a music man he would play his guitar and sing this song for me i would always cry both men passionate and talented Rest in Peace ❤️🩷
What an incredible performance. That's what a true professional sounds like. Where have they all gone?
Wonderful lyrics and beautiful performance. Thank you.
I listen to them
At least 2 to 3 times per day.I Can never get enough of the ladies of st. Joephs
I miss all my sweet dogs!
Even the not so sweet ones.
me too but let's hope there's a rainbow bridge!!
I can't get through the dog part with out crying, then I need a drink.
This performance is FANTASTIC!! Sound is excellent!! An instant favorite! I've always loved the song but didn't know he wrote it! This is a treasure.
Great to hear the original version.
I was there at Sand Mountain in Houston the night he first played this song. He was a cool dude and I really miss him and Townes Van Zant -
I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you
In worn out shoes
Silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants
The old soft shoe
He jumped so high
He jumped so high
Then he'd lightly touched down
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Dance
I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was
Down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
As he spoke right out
He talked of life
He talked of life
He lightly slapped his leg instead
He said the name Bojangles and he danced a lick
Across the cell
He grabbed his pants for a better stance
He jumped so high
He clicked his heels
He let go a laugh
He let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Dance
We danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs
Throughout the south
We spoke in tears of fifteen years
How his dog and him
They travelled about
His dog up and died
He up and died
After twenty years he still grieves
They said I dance now at every chance and honky tonks
For drinks and tips
But most the time I spend behind these county bars
Cause I drinks a bit
He shook his head and as he shook his head
I heard someone ask please
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Dance
👍Thank you.!🎼
Yup. The lyrics.
I humble myself. 😌
Many thanks for putting this up.
Certainly the youngest Jerry Jeff I have seen singing his worldwide known signature tune.
Looks fresh and very fit, maybe before those wilder Texan Jacky Jack times.
Also shows how young he was when he wrote this classic.
Will look up his date of birth after leaving this site to get his age- certainly Bojangles travelled with him for many, many years.
Sad to think that other people made his song so famous ,Sammy Davis and Nina Simone .but dosent that happen all the time .Great great song rip Gerry Jeff walker 👏👏🇨🇮
It’s a true song..!!🥳🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰👊
One of my all time favourite songs..but this is the first time I've seen this... he's obviously live..but what about the backing track? So lovely
His voice seems to have changed alot, still one of the best songs ever written
❤ One in a million.. such a great song / lyrics'.!
Love this.. the original.🎼 👍
Wow hearing this for the first time...Absolutely beautiful ❤❤❤
I never realized so many artists sang a version of this song.sammy Davis jr.john Denver,Neal diamond, nitty gritty dirt band,Bob Dylan my favorite is nitty gritty dirt band but all versions are all nice to hear.
Goosebumps and memories.
A truly brilliant songwriter and guitar player Thats one of my favourite songs written by him and made famous also by Nina simone and sammy davis jnr 👏👏👏🇨🇮
A couple of friends and I stopped in the Gateway Inn at Gallatin Gateway for a beer; I believe it was 1978. I'll be damned if Jerry Jeff wasn't in there having a beer, too. He pulled up a stool and played for an hour; there were only about 20 people in the bar. Great guy....great memory.
My favorite version. Jerry was perfect here. And really handsome
I just love the way these play and sing.❤
The Google results say, "Song by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band." quite prominently. Google should hang it's collective heads in shame.
One of those with a golden voice.
Beautiful.
Beautiful song great voice words story love it.
What a beautiful presentation of a song Jerry Jeff Walker has immortalized.....thank you for such a musical masterpiece!!
the bravest troubadour of all time
Man,what a great real life stofy, and thanks for this song of a man and his dog
Wow. Almost teared up listening to this! Brought back great memories.
Pure greatness!
Top 5 all-time on my list
Got to know him and wife,Susan, back in 73, they had a beautiful Oak Hill Texas home outside Austin. Boosting then but still a wonderful man. We shall miss him
That's pretty cool. I was just reading about him and realized he lived around Austin. I am also from and living in the area. Also weird realizing he wrote this song and not Sammy Davis.

@@richardb8104 I was friends with Willie’s dad, mom, and brother Doyle in 73-74 when they worked Willie’s pool hall at Manchca Rd and Lamar. I drank beer with his sister Bobbi on 3 occasions
I ran a multi-handicapped deaf crew to set.up and clean up after concerts at the Austin Opry. house. I lost many, no, all dominoes games against willies’ friend, Zeke. Lots of memories through ‘78. Yeah, Willie had a nice ranch towards Dripping Springs past Oak Hill. Tim O ‘Connor
This Recording Reminds Me Of When I First Heard JERRY JEFF @ THE MAIN POINT IN BRYN-MAR PA. Very Memorable for Me !!
I've tried to cover this song for years but I can't get through it without crying.
I feel like this would happen to me if I tried.
wow, it's a problem, played it on my gig today, I try to picture him smiling, that helps..the musician in me wants to display the song and JJW in the foreverness of music...aah
🇺🇸 incredible
God Bless, July 4th 2024AD 🥲
Grace and Peace to you…..
Viva Terilingua, love his music
This is the youngest vrsion I've seen. Whereever he played in my area- Texas, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, etc. I was on it. My hero- totally himself. Also love his co-story- Stoney. Loved Cowboy's Lament- freedom!
Nightrider’s Lament.

I just discovered this, and plan to share it with friends who understand musical genius when they hear it. Thank you for your comment.
What a great song and post. Thanks. I wonder what it feels like to write a song that becomes absolutely legendary?
JJW, thank you! What a wonderful song!

😎What.. 🧐you too? 👍
Wise.. with age! 🎼

Nice! I’ve been looking for a live version, just Jerry Jeff & David Bromberg doing a very nice acoustic guitar solo that stole the show. I saw it somewhere years ago but can’t find it anywhere.
Nobody sings it like the writer
Nobody sang it like Jerry Jeff Walker! So amazed that TH-cam brought this up! I have been listening to my favorite Jaded Lover by him, but no video. This is a rare treat! And I just got it today, 7-20-23, and I hope lots more fans get to see this handsome young Jerry Jeff. Genius singer and songwriter! 💕 💋 🌹 rosita
Try this one Rosita.....this was from an Austin City Limits taping. This recording captures the greatness of JJW during the time I lived in Austin.

This is so beautiful...
I love this ballad so cool and so sad
Don't forget John Stewart!
My 1st record - Ridin High, I like to think he got to Texas as soon as he could.
I know this song. Thanks
Amazing sound from one guitar
@Tony From Syracuse Oops. Sry.
There's a backing band with him.
I hear other instruments but don't see a band, and it's by a fellow who did film/tv stuff, so, I am thinking that they had him play and/or sing to a backing track. Way back then, especially, live t.v. performance could be a challenge. I have never seen this video and I am a huge fan; this version may be the best I've ever heard! I have always LOVED his voice and, here, he hasn't even worn it in quite yet. But it's pure. As he aged, his voice was always so comforting to me. (BTW, the band could be off camera.)
Live at the Groene !
It needed singing, telling.
👏👏👏
♡
"Solo" - So, do they have David Bromberg, and the bass player, and the piano player in the shadows? Either that or hes miming to the studio cut. Cool early video either way.
❤❤❤❤❤
