I am 84 year's old and I listen to this almost every day, you just do not get type of harmony anymore I think they were one of the greatest groups off all time
I picked up the album just the other day for $3.....I loved the record back in '79. It's still great. I'm a young guy at 62 but I couldn't agree with you more!
I just turned 69, my husband are the same age age every summer. Husband’s favorite Singer songwriter is Rodney Crowell, who wrote this wonderful song ❤❤❤ and Linda Rondstadt sang with the Nitty Gritty in 1988-89, and she won a Grammy for her cameo. Linda is fab and so is Rodney and NGDB are so fantastic, our whole family love them.
I was 9 yrs old when this song hit the airwaves in the Philippines, am now 61 yrs old but never enough of this song. It brings a lot of childhood memories.😊😊😊
I was 12 years old when this song hit the airwaves in the Philippines, me and my late brother, Joel, were so fond of this song and I always remember my teen years w/my brother, priceless...
Mom was born in 60s and I was born in the 80s. She introduced me this song in the 90s and became one of our favorites. Mom is a good singer and guitarist as well and she can play any song with her guitar.
I had the absolute pleasure to see these guys in Vancouver, BC in 2000 they opened for Alabama, but they were not treated like an opening act as both acts did their full show. The funniest thing from that concert that I will never forget is after Nitty Gritty did their opening number Jeff Hannah introduced the rest of the band and he told the audience "Between the 5 of us you see up here on stage, we've been married a total of 17 times." I thought after he said that, my God no wonder they're still on tour, they must have a hell of a lot of alimony payments....Just thought I'd share that memory.
Just got back from myrtle beach… me laying on a hammock while the ocean breeze flows through my hair. Half open book on my chest, beer bottle by my side and a half lit cigarette between my fingers…this song hits different when you’re on a vacation.
January - March Summer 1981 in Lima Peru (I am Peruvian) when I met a guy from USA who was/is the brother of the actor Ryan O'Neil. Great time on the beach with girls, beers, and fun. One day on the beach, listening American Dream I told him that I loved this song but I couldn't understand the lyrics. He wrote the lyrics for me which I memorized them. Great times.
My dad just shared me this and told me to listen ...I've heard this song frequently sung by him ..its just that I've never listened to this original piece before ..but now I'm loving it 💕..
Am now 62 yrs old but for God's Mercy I was able to enjoy the REAL MUSIC of the GOLDEN ERA, which , unfortunately, had been deprived this carefree, careless, freewheeling youth of this less-concerned current era. Love you all out there!!!
I won't let the day without watching this beautiful video of this team, sooo cool and all the musicians, they made it perfectly great playing all their instruments from the heart Plus the wonderful duet of Ryan and Elizabeth😘😘😘🙌👏👏👏
It makes me sad to think about teens of today and what they will remember when they are our age... wearing masks all day and are not allowed to have fun and feel free anymore
I've seen the band in each of the last four decades. The last time was just a month ago in Marion, Il. You forget just how many greaat songs they've had until you see them in concert. One of the truely original bands .
I was traveling in Ireland in 1990 and was desperate to listening to NGDB, it took me a month but found the "cassette " tape!! Lmao. Finally i was at peace ✌️
I beg your pardon, mama, what did you say? My mind was drifting off on Martinique Bay It's not that I'm not interested, you see Augusta, Georgia is just no place to be I think Jamaican in the moonlight Sandy beaches, drinking rum every night We got no money, mama, but we can go We'll split the difference, go to Coconut Grove Keep on talking, mama, I can hear Your voice, it tickles down inside of my ear I feel a tropical vacation this year Might be the answer to this hillbilly fear I think Jamaican in the moonlight Sandy beaches, drinking rum every night We got no money, mama, but we can go We'll split the difference, go to Coconut Grove Voila! An American Dream Well, we can travel girl, without any means When it's as easy as closing your eyes And dream Jamaica is a big neon sign Just keep talking, mama, I like that sound It goes so easy with that rain falling down I think a tropical vacation this year Might be the answer to this hillbilly fear Voila! An American Dream Yeah, we can travel, girl, without any means When it's as easy as closing your eyes And dream Jamaica is a big neon sign Just think Jamaican in the moonlight Sandy beaches, drinking rum every night We got no money, mama, but we can go
You just can't beat The Dirt Band, seen these guys a few years back and out of all the concerts I've been too these guys put on the best show, besides awesome singing they sure know how to entertain.
In the spring of 68, I had just returned from my second trip to Vietnam. I was sent to finish my enlistment at Fort Ord, in Monterey, CA. I drove a 68-yellow Camaro SS396 to LA and saw them at the LA or Anaheim Coliseum. We crashed at a friend's house and returned to Fort Ord the next day. I always loved this band as they had a laid-back country style. I was from the Mid-West (Detroit).
Yeah man! I was a 19yr old soldier doing my 2 years national service in the South African Army in 1979 - we had a sergeant who did the "one man band" thing and he would play this song when we had parties on Saturday nights in camp! A long long time ago...
Love this band. I never got to see the original band perform live. 😢The new line up are great too. But I have so many memories of their early stuff. Wonderful band. ❤️ 🙌🏼 🌻

Thank you Nitty-gritty Dirt Band. You've smoothed out the bumps in the road & soothed my soul from the grief, hardships, losses & trials of Life & still make me smile. 😁👍💖

This song and Mr. Bojangles were our favorite songs to jam with our friends in the 80's in southern Philippines.
The airmen's club on Clark AB was the Coconut Grove
I still love an American Dream as a 60 yo senior citizen.
Hello!lm 68 Yrs. Old! I always Sing this My Fave American Dream with My Mom which 91 yrs old!We enjoy playing The Music!
Mom was born in 60s and I was born in the 80s. She introduced me this song in the 90s and became one of our favorites. Mom is a good singer and guitarist as well and she can play any song with her guitar.
From 1979 The 70s Baby
Enjoy every second with your mom . I lost mine last week , It hurts sooo bad She died of Parkinson disease at 79 , She was wonderful
Good song yeah?! 😊
I can tell you had a good mom who taught you music and did it well, mine did the same for reading in my case.
Love the nitty gritty dirt band..... keep it up guys
Yall have so many great songs people don't know about I grew up listening to yall and I love yall yall are really the best
This song always instantly transports me to where I always want to be. The beach!
I am impressed for the simple fact that the drummer is doing a harmonica solo at the same time
That's Jimmie Fadden.
I agree. Playing the harp is hard without having to focus on another instrument.
you think?
These are some hardcore musicians for sure. Love their versatility!
I love this beautiful song, the melody is very pleasant, it lifts up my mood
Timeless classic - was a youngster when it was released. Ringing golden memories...

WOW! This song has been stuck in my subconscious for years... Today I bought the Rodney Crowell album it originally came out on. Great stuff!
Recall those young college days. We used to wear jeans, drink beer and sing the American Dream song.
I've known them since college. Two brothers I went to school with were their stage and lighting managers. LOVE LOVE LOVE these guys to death.
It makes me sad to think about teens of today and what they will remember when they are our age... wearing masks all day and are not allowed to have fun and feel free anymore
