Honda HRR 216 Replace Wheel And Drive Gear Pinion

  • I replaced the rear wheels and drive pinions on my Honda HRR216 lawn mower. It was hardly pulling at all and the right wheels not keep pace with the left. I found both axles and pinions had zero lubrication. The metal stop would almost not compress into the spring loaded which causes all kind of issues. If you like the video like, share, and subscribe.

For what it's worth, the "moon shaped" washer is called a wave washer. It takes the place of our 'lock' washer in Europe and Japan. I don't understand why you went through this whole process and didn't lubricate the gears.....still, I learned how to access the pinion gear as Honda calls it so I can lube it as the book requires....thanks

Excellent video. Saved my day as I was not aware of the spring loaded ratchet pins in the axle. The video made the job easy. THANK YOU!!!!!

    Excellent video -- thank you!
Something that might help DIYers with the rear wheels on these Honda 216s: Each Pinion Gear (12-tooth) has a "punch mark" (small, shallow hole). After cleaning and lubing the gear, note that you install with the punch mark facing inside (for the Left Wheel) and facing outside (for the Right Wheel). This is according to the Honda 216VKA Shop Manual.
    Take care!

To assist those unaware of the ratcheting sound, the ratcheting mechanism(s) are two of three parts. The spring, the KEY RATCHET 42672-VE2-800 and slot at the end of the axel (where the gear fit/slides over).. The spring sits in the middle of the slot and the key ratchet sits on top of the spring round side in. This is what sounds off the normal ratcheting sound when the rear wheels roll. These two parts will stay in the slot if you lubricate it with the correct thick grease requirement and hold it with your finger while placing the small gear back on the axel. Be sure to clean the axel slot and its parts if you are reusing. If not reusing be sure to clean the slot, lubricate it with grease before placing the spring and key back into place. You must also smear a liberal amount of grease around the gear after placing the lock ring back on it. You may also grease the larger wheel gear. I found that cleaning the plastic 'cap' and placing grease on the center divot helps maintain grease for the life of the lubrication. I just regreased mine after 15 years after servicing it this month. It had dried up but there was still a good amount of grease left on both gears. I was quite surprised. Honda strategically placed grease on the inside center of the cap in premolded divots as well as on the gears to 'seal from leakage over the years. The right grease does not leak from the cap even in a hot summer. It keeps its viscosity. Be sure to note how all parts are removed with cell phone. Clean and WD40 everything while you have it apart specifically the heighth lever mechanisms. A wire brush will clean the rust and dried grass and wd40 will keep it lubed and ready to go with some anti rust affects.

Most people who remove this drive gear from a honda self propelled mower
thinks that the flat edge of the drive gear should face forward since
that's the way the axle key would catch the gear to move it forward
however the drive axle actually spins backwards in order to spin the
gear on the actual wheel and tire forward so always make sure the flat
edge of the gear faces backwards. I made this mistake when I removed
    mine.

So what happens when the gear is wrong? I just put a new transmission in my hrr216 Honda and it will not pull forward! It will so slightly but does not have no power to pull the mower. I put the old one in cause it still worked and it does the same thing so I’m making the same mistake over and over!

Thank you for the video. I was not sure about which direction the pinion gear should be installed. According the the service manual for my rear wheel drive Toro the pinion gears are stamped L & R. You should see that from the side you install it on if oriented correctly. With this being the case my left pinion spins clockwise. The wheel spins the opposite direction driven off the gear. That kept throwing me for a loop until I figured it out.
The main issue for me was the spring behind the key getting stuck with gunk. Will see if I am successful putting it back together. My right side rear wheel was missing the key altogether. Curious though what frees the mower to roll backwards when you are moving it around since the key locks on the shaft?
Love the mantra, "Never mind I'll do it myself". I feel the same way. I repair my appliances, cars, etc when they need fixing & TH-cam is the best reference for it. I do appreciate your video and wanted to say thank you!

    • @mrmarcuswms

No my problem was the gears were worn causing the self propel to barely work. If you are having this problem then sounds like the pinion gears were put in backwards.or just something else in that area.

Then I can start working on whatever needs to be checked out... Honda mowers are good.... I have 3 of the same model... I usually buy things before they wear out... 2 cases of Honda oil & 55 gallon steel drum with premium fuel for my mowers & other equipment. Life is good.

    • @beaud3035
      @beaud3035 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I love Honda mowers but the bushings get caked with dirt and then the moisture hits it and basically fills the bushing in with crud and it hardens and once it heats up it expands and squeezes the axle in turn making it to where you can't roll it backwards with one wheel or both. The right fix is to replace both rear bushings. I've done it a couple times and they're like $1.50 each. I ordered mine off Walmart's website and just bought six of them to have them on hand. Honda mowers are known for this problem.
