    FYI: The pinion gear has a small dot on one side, looking down at the gear like a clock. From the back of the mower, on the right side wheel, the dot faces out, i.e. is still visible when the gear is on the shaft. On the left side wheel, the dot faces in, it is NOT visible when the gear is on the shaft. This will "orient" the pinion gear to operate properly: Roll freely forward with motor off or clutch disengaged, but engage both drive wheels when operating self propel.

    For those that do not hear a clicking sound when rotating the wheel or pinion gear... the ratchet key is most likely stuck because of grime buildup. When you take the wheel and pinon gear off you will notice that the rear axle has a slot cut in it. Inside the slot is a spring (Ratchet Return Spring) and Ratchet Key. Dirt and grime gets into the slot and makes the ratchet key stick below the surface of the axle/shaft. Be careful when you take the ratchet key and spring out.. they are small and you dont want to lose them. Clean the parts and shaft slot, removing all grime buildup. Over time the spring gets compressed so stretch it a little bit. Replace the spring and ratchet key so the curved side is going into the axle slot. You will have to hold it down while you slide on the pinon gear. The ratchet key should move freely now and you should hear a clicking sound.

    Even after replacing the pinion gear and springs my mower makes a popping sound when I push it forward. What could be wrong?

    I just ordered all new parts for my rear drive: hardware, pinion gears and new keys. $35, cheap.

    While you're waiting for new gears, you can swap them leftright because they wear mostly on one side. There should be enough left of the teeth on the other side to engage with the wheels. Just don't flip them around, keep the orientation the same.

    On my HRX217HXA, one rear wheel isn't "clicking" and doesn't lock up when pulling the mower backwards with the drive engaged. Can I be sure the problem is limited to the pinion/ratchet/spring/wheel area and cannot be the transmission? The other wheel is operating fine but I don't know if the axle is solid or if it's actually two shafts.

    Is the right side and the left side "pinion Drive" gear assembled the same way? Or, are they just the opposite?

      +irandar As far as we know there is no wrong way to install the gear.

    • @irandar
      @irandar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +RepairClinic.com I really do not understand that you do not know. The repair manual clearly says that the gear must be installed according to a marking, which is not on the older gears. The answer is that when moving forward the rear wheels must click. Of course the gear moves in the opposite direction. Got it? Regards.

    I'd like to preface this comment by saying thank you for making videos on these topics; I'd like to critique it by saying boy I wish you showed actual used lawnmowers for these. Guy in the video just grabs that washer and lifts it off like it's nothing; I'm sitting here with a can of WD-40 and 3-in-one oil, pliers, a screwdriver, and a hammer, and I can't get the damn thing off. (Yes, I took off the snap ring already - that took about 20 minutes just to get that loose, and that washer is just stuuuuuuck up in there, as most of the parts were on this 10 year old poorly maintained fixer-upper.) As a person doing this kind of thing for the first time, I can say every video I've found that shows the reality of a used unit and things to look for if you're having to replace this part or that, has ultimately been a lot more informative and insightful in that way. In any case, thank you for making the video, it is appreciated.

      I agree with you ... Some of these people use brand new mowers for their videos.. Once mechanical things like a used mower gets used hard, things tend to get frozen...

      Use penetrating oil by spraying it at an angle to get it under the washer on the shaft. Wait 5 minutes, part should come off pretty easy.

    1:50..1:52 Both sides of the Wave Washer are "curved". Also "outward" might refer to the outside of the mower, or the end of the bolt. At 1:52 you can see that the wave washer is installed with the *** concave side towards the threaded end *** of the bolt. I assume that is what you meant.
