  • In this video I show you how to take a composite photograph of a bride using MagMod modifiers, and then how to edit all the images together in Photoshop :-)

    MagMod - magnetmod.com?aff=90 use discount code "neilredfern"
    All the equipment I use:
    UK - www.amazon.co.uk/shop/neilred...
    US & International - www.amazon.com/shop/neilredfern
    To create this off camera flash composite portrait, I used three speed lights (two Godox V860ii and an AD200) and used MagMod grids, MagSphere and the MagMod MagBox. I took the photographs on my Sony A9 with a Sony 16-35mm lens attached.
    As well as showing you how I took each individual photograph, I also show you exactly how I edited the images, and blended the composite together, in Adobe Photoshop. Once I was finished in Photoshop I then did more editing of the final image in Lightroom.
    A huge thank you to both Demi ( / demihughes1x ) and Toni Darcy ( / tonidarcy ) for helping me so much in this video. This image was a real team effort.
    I hope you enjoy the video - if you have any questions at all about anything which I did in the video please do let me know in the comments.

    Great end result! I usually have an assistant flip the material and shoot that without the model in the shot and stitch it all together. Otherwise you'll just continually be doing the _'black brush/white brush boogie'_ and changing the previous shots of the model to match each upcoming image of the model/background/ etc. and hope they match up.

    Thank you Neil, very good. Just one point, I always auto-align after importing to PS as well as I tend to accidentally nudge the tripod sometimes between shots. The location looks like where I used to play band rehearsals in the early 1980s, amazing natural reverb.

      Thank you very much Laurence! Great point, this was the first time I had ever done this and because I had used a tripod I assumed I wouldn't need the auto-align too but you are probably right and it's probably better practice to use that option! I appreciate that :-) It's an awesome space, it's called Atlas Studios

    Maybe helpful, when taking multiple shots like this, using back button autofocus for initial focus, then set to manual focus. Obviously don’t turn lens, but if you accidentally pressed the back button focus, then focus won’t change

  • @marcusmurray5440

    Fantastic. How did you get rid of the smoke and smoke machine in layers? One other question, why did you use photo mechanic first, what's the benefits, could it not be done in light room or straight to photoshop?
    Love the final image. Well done.

    Hello Neil,
    How do you decide on the numbers when you start shooting? I didn't see you using the incident light meter either. Can you please clarify that? Thanks.

  • @trevr10
    @trevr10 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Enjoyed the video, great concept and the final result was worth the effort. My question is why did you send the image back to LR instead of using the ACR filter option, perhaps converting to a smart object first? Do you think it was just easier in this case? Personally I find it easier to do things in LR than ACR so probably would have done the same as you.

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much Trevor! Great question too, to be honest I did it this way because 90% of the editing which I do is in Lightroom so it was purely through habit and because I feel I know Lightroom pretty well. You're right though in that in this instance using ACR would probably make more sense :)

    Brilliant as always Neil. Your a true artist. I'm always inspired by your creativity. 👍👍
    Can I just ask about one thing which popped up on the video. You mentioned back button focus. I've heard it mentioned a few times on different videos and channels. I've tried to look for tutorials, but it's the one thing I've really struggled to get my head around. I'm not even sure if I would be able to set it up on my Canon 1300d? Is it difficult to set up....and is it worth the effort of trying to learn? If there's any advice at all you could provide it would be much appreciated. Thanks again for your videos.

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much James! Very kind. Great question. Personally I love back button focus. Basically it means that the button you currently press to both focus and take a shot, only then takes the shot - it doesn't focus. The job of focusing moves to a button on the back of your camera. Combined with AFC (continuous autofocus) it means that you can easily continue to focus on one particular area by keeping the back button held down as opposed to constantly half pressing and full pressing. It's a huge help for the bride walking down the aisle for example. It also means that you can choose your focus then take as many shots as you want without constantly having to refocus. It's hard to explain how much better this makes focusing but once you get use to it, I am sure you'll prefer it. For me it's invaluable. I may make a video on this in the future as it's a good subject. I hope this helps :-)
