  • I disassemble, clean, lubricate and re-assemble an S-K Wayne 3870 Swivel Rotational Head Ratchet Wrench. If the wrench is not working well, it can often be repaired by cleaning and lubrication.

I have this ratchet wrench. I like it so much I wanted to buy another. I see it's discontinued. Bummer. Thanks for the servicing video.

Is there anything special that brand does with its dielectric grease? Silicone grease seems pretty straight-forward and not in need of any special additives. Perhaps I just haven't encountered any special silicone grease yet.

A little too heavy on the SuperLube for me.

These rebuild kits still around for these ratchets? Why do companies discontinue there best stuff

S-K unfortunately no longer makes this great ratchet, but it uses the same super-strong, reliable, 40-tooth ratcheting mechanism as their other 3/8 drive round-head ratchets, which they've been making for decades. You can drop a new, still manufactured and easy-to-find mechanism in a 50-year-old ratchet, if you want. Even better, S-K has recently re-designed their their mechanism so it has double, alternating pawls to give you 80 positions, virtually doubling the tooth count and cutting the swing arc in half. So you can make your old 3870 Swivel Roto Head work and feel more like a modern ratchet by dropping in one of these new kits. (Very few companies build ratchets this well anymore, though, so you can get the best of both worlds, imo) Check it out here: www.harryepstein.com/index.php/800700-3-8-drive-dx-sk-ratchet-mechanism-dt80.html

The ratcheting mechanism can be broken down even more. I watched another video that showed how to do it. But lubing without a tear down can be adequate. I just cleaned and lube my SK wrench I bought back from the mid 70s. Amazon, of course, also has rebuild kits available. The other posted comment is another source. BTW if you search on Amazon and search for SK ratchets or other SK tools you'll find a bunch of them. SK is expensive but cheaper than Snap On.

It was discontinued long before Ideal took over. I think a lot of folks wish they would bring this one back, though. Man, they are hard to break and still in high demand. Folks bid like crazy for these things on eBay. They frequently sell for more than they originally cost, sometimes creeping into the used Snap-on range. I'd really like one, but at a reasonable price.
