Thank you for restoring this Proto ratchet. I just got on which was all frozen and the screws would come out. However these screws had never met an H.K.Porter impact driver! So I tapped the screws with my dad's H.K.Porter impact driver and they came out! Now that it's apart I wanted to make sure I put it back together correctly. Thanks again.
I recently bought three pre-owned Proto ratchets; 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4". Your video is extremely helpful in how to disassemble, lube and reassemble. Thanks!!
there is something satisfying taking apart something dry and gritty, cleaning all the rust and gunk and lubing it up with good stuff, and hearing it work so much smoother
I have this exact tool, that I found last night in some of my Grandpa's old tools. I wonder just how old it is? I'm 61 . So who knows? It works great. But it doesn't look as good as this one.
I bought a Proto metric socket set (12pt,1/2") a few days ago and it comes with the same ratchet, model # 5449 with the word "USA Professional" next to it, so how old is that model ratchet? I love the quality of this proto set and everything but to my surprise, I didn't know their ratchet design was that old.
Thanks for your helpful videos. So I have a question, have a Stanley 91-929 crv 3/8" ratchet and I am trying to lube it, I can open everything except the small gear. Is it supposed to be staying there and just main gear slides out? Any advice would be much appreciated :)
Hello awesome thanks for the video if anyone watching likes keeping their tools clean using baby wipes is pretty good yes those used to wipe baby bottoms
been watching yout videos for quiet a while now and you are incredibly awesome in what you do its exactly like my ex coach use to repair and use and store the stuff so on a funny side i am 100% sure if it was possible you would actually open a 5mm Allen tool clean and lubricate it :)
I don't have a bike with those specific shifters. Looking at photos of the shifters, I would guess they would be replace similar to one of the shifters in these videos: Replacing Bike Shifter Cables How To Replace Shift Cable In Shimano EZ Fire Shifter (ST EF28) So check those out and give it a shot.
What types of grease do you recomend to use ? I have just lithium grease, also I thought it will be a good idea just using wd-40, what do you think it's the best ?
@@RJTheBikeGuy thank you ! I was asking what types of grease would you recommend because I'm my country super lube isn't available just silicon grease or lithium grease are my option
Proto, certain Stanley, Crescent, and Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh) all use this kind of mechanism. Actually I haven't seen any of them with lube inside, they come brand new without any. I never gave it much thought but I should probably take mine apart and lube them a little just to protect from rust. I have Crescent brand ratchets in my girlfriend's car, and a Stanley and Pittsburgh brand in mine.
I know Snap-On uses lube in their wrenches. I have seen a video of them being made. Also they include a small tube of Super Lube with their rebuild kits.
shyflirt1 I'm guessing it has to do with price, probably it saves a step in production and shaves off a few cents to build them. It saves money (from the lube they don't have to use) and also saves man hours (the people who would have to apply the lube), or a machine they would have to buy to automatically put some in the ratchet.
+Dave Fisher I just scrubbed it with a nylon bristle brush and dish soap. The rust was just on the surface. If there was real rust I might have tried Evapo Rust.
RJ The Bike Guy thanks RJ. i watched another of your vids and you included the cleaning info. thanks for doing these. i love tools also and it's nice to see someone saving these perfectly good tools (and often better than today's made-in-china crap) from the rubbish pile... keep on tubing, bro... :)
I would think the springs could be dislodged if I dropped the ratchet. Obviously, they do not, but the placement/design looks a little loosey-goosey to me.
Those things are bad to loosen up. I put longer screws in them, and center punch (brad) the ends of the screws. Next time I take it apart, I'll just grind off the small mushroom.
this item is very similar to the japanaese MITOLOY 4RH 250 8977 1/2 INCH (both inside and outside and parts are probably interchangeable... i found a dud selling it for 59 pounds around 99 dollars "new" i know a vendor in my area who stocks this ratchet for 15 pounds for the half inch drive and 9 pounds for the 3/8 version sold both new ,,,i was like dude are you series ? i know a warehouse load of these and they sell for way much less " new " and there not even Discontinued
I found one of these on the side of the road, completely rusted. I restored it and then I found your video... I wish I had found it earlier. Here is my restoration video: th-cam.com/video/TJrfxQjXyHo/w-d-xo.html

Great video. I've done this before as I am addicted to buying and using vintage ratchets.

Like heaven
I think it is the most easy ratch to repair, that is a nice ratch, great tool Proto.
If the spring is tend to fly, what can i put alternative way to change the spring?
Just picked up 3 of these from my high school auto shop cool video!
When removing or installing the springs be careful they tend to fly and finding it good luck.. Great video..

do you have a vid on a shimano altus a10 shifter- how to repalce a shift cable

I got a Plomb 5449 that looks exactly the same as this ratchet. Is it the same thing?
Probably just a similar design.
Plomb / Proto 5449s are the same. You can still get the rebuild kits if the teeth or pawls are worn/broken
What types of grease do you recomend to use ? I have just lithium grease, also I thought it will be a good idea just using wd-40, what do you think it's the best ?
WD-40 is NOT a good lubricant. The Superlube works well.
@@RJTheBikeGuy thank you ! I was asking what types of grease would you recommend because I'm my country super lube isn't available just silicon grease or lithium grease are my option
You seem to be under the assumption that I know what is available in your country. Maybe the silicone grease.

My guess is there was at least oil. Over the years though oil and grease dry up.
Snap-on uses Super Lube👍👍
I Have A Wizard Ratchet. That Is The Exact Same Thing Same Shape And Guts. Wonder Who Makes Wizard.
Any idea how old this model of ratchet is? i just got one for free in a box of old tools
Nope.
@@RJTheBikeGuy its older one 40yrs ? at one point the 2 paws are made sintered metal yours looked like castings
i enjoyed the video but i wish you had shown how you cleaned up the inside of the wrench (rust, etc.)

I take mine appart clean it reinstall then pack it with grease so when i put the cover on its squeezing out the sides 😂

I have a 4749, I've found that in my car I bought.
Why that lub and not some of your bike grease
This is what is recommended. It's a lighter grease.

It’s worth twenty quid or a few USD more now
Genial!
Just bought a nice US-Pro 1/2 ratchet and 72 teeth new less than £10 not worth getting my hands dirty repairing one, kit will cost me a few quid
"1,299"
Dude, I like your videos but half the time your out of frame. Also, Superlube does not have silicone.
