I was a 1.24 scale miniaturist for 30 years, before I had a stroke. In that time, it seemed like the interested in miniatures went away. I'm glad people like you are discovering the fun and challenge of Miniatures. It is my post stroke goal to return to my passion....Just remember, scale is what makes it look real and that is want makes it look magical.
Growing up my dad used to work at the Art Institute of Chicago. If you ever find yourself there. You must go and see the Thorne Rooms. It's like walking through a hall of paintings, except that behind the glass there are miniature rooms from all different historical settings. They are GORGEOUS, the detail is amazing! My favorite part was always looking out the doors or windows into other rooms or gardens hidden in the background. As a child I used to imagine Beatrix Potter style mice coming in and throwing parties or having tea time.
Just saw the exhibit last week! I had no idea it was there and I was just in awe! I could have spent all day just trying to look at all of the details in the background rooms!!

My mom has been doing miniatures as a hobby for almost ten years now... She's done two entire houses and one coffee shop so far. She has gotten to the point where she made every single thing for her latest one other than certain glass items. My favorite thing she's done is her first house though, because it's in a cabinet. Dollhouses started as ways for rich people to show off miniature versions of what rooms they were remodeling would eventually look like, and they were in cabinets! People usually don't even notice it's a dollhouse at first, but when they do they're always so enchanted by it. I came downstairs one day to find her giving a full tour to the guys who were delivering our new refrigerator. It's such a wonderfully pure and creative hobby.
CW loss of pet I’ve loved your videos for a while now, and usually I watch them while eating breakfast or doing my makeup. Today, though, I woke up to find one of my senior cats had passed sometime in the night. Watching this is a salve on my heart-I’m a huge LOTR fan and lived in Philly for almost a decade til January, and in West Philly there are numerous houses that have little Hobbit hole garden decorations in their front yards, and this reminded me of that. That little bit of magic I’d be on the lookout for, that would have me walking down new streets every so often instead of sticking to routine, going Hobbit hole-spotting. It’s those little things that make the world a better, brighter place. Thank you for reminding me of that on a day like today-it was sorely needed ❤️

My husband and I have been making a lot of D&D mini scale terrain and buildings, I made my fireplace poker set and some chandeliers out of wire with jeweller's pliers, seed beads for candleholders, etc.:) and my rabbit likes eating the bark off of twigs so once he's done with them, I cut up the twigs into firewood and glue it as needed. Craft foam strips also work well as hardwood flooring, and cardboard cereal boxes make amazing roof shingles :) And an alternative to the heat gun for texturing foam, with that white craft foam that feels like styrofoam food packaging, we use a dead ballpoint pen, it makes just the right groove for plank lines. You can try pencils of varying levels of dullness to get different widths of lines too. We like the wider (duller) pencils for details like mortar lines in brickwork, and rolling with a krinkled foil ball makes a great stone or brick texture on that kind of foam. Oh, and when yo're diving into the recycle bin for craft supplies, cheap cardboard egg cartons with the really rough side!!! Great for stucco, bricks, stone, cobblestones... and you can sort of wet and shape it a little too. My favourite trick for chunky paint is to mix some drywall compound powder into the paint. Why random. 'Oh dear, what is this unsightly hole? Why it's in the perfect position for a mouse hole. No dear, like this *shows screenshots of the hobbit hole*
Rachel!! Love love love the Mouse House! When I was ten years old I was given a little 2 inch high realistic mouse figure ( it was 1970, so I take no responsibility for what it may have been made of😂😭). I had read The Rescuers, Stuart Little, all the little teeny mouse stories. I collected a couple more of these figures, and when I was 14, I spent a summer building them a house. I only had found objects as well as cardboard boxes, paper and paint, but I managed to make a sweet three story furnished home, as well as a mouse baby made of a pipe cleaner, in a walnut shell cradle, and I wrote stories about them. I later enclosed the box to look like a tree stump. I only had cloth and cardboard and glue, but I managed to create it so the front would open out. It had an out house in a large root. I decorated it for Christmas every year until I left home. Sadly, the house was destroyed by my first husband, but I was able to save some of the contents and most importantly, the mouse family. I think you must be a kindred spirit! I also adore TLOTR, my "keeper" second hubby and I named our third daughter Eowyn. Adore your channel!
I had some of those mice when I was little too! Sadly mine were accidentally thrown away because I had built their house in an empty tissue box. I am glad that you still have yours!
I too did not really enjoy overly small things until one day I did. Went out and bought the tiniest crochet hook I could find and regular sewing thread and have been making teeny tiny lace things ever since. It's wonderful!
While watching this I realized how much I have learned now from scratchbuilders and miniaturebuilders like Bill making stuff or Studson Studios - highly recommend watching those! Great work, Rachel, it was really fun watching!
You know, many fear our robotic overlords, but I KNOW I got a Studson Studio rec based on my Maksy algorithm. If quality content such as this is the result of data tabulation, I say, “Bring on the digital age!” ❤️
This is what i look forward to on Fridays. This also gives me more ideas for my lord of the rings themed wedding in 2024, yes everyone will have to dress in theme.
At my studio here in Scotland I make fairy doors… and fairy nooks. 🧚🏽♂️ Kinda the same idea but you find a lot of them outside ❤ It’s very adorable 🥰🧚🏽♂️ I’ve made tiny swings for their garden and clocks for the wall and little hedgehogs and a garden bench 🎨💜🏴
In the KC suburb Overland Park, there was a walking trail where for a few years folks were making fairy houses. I was visiting my parents at the time and joined in the fun. The bummer was that it was on the backside of a softball/baseball complex and kids (we assume) started smashing them up for a while. But it was magical while it lasted.
I grew up during the last miniature explosion, so I can safely say that the fireplace is probably an "antique" as I had one (or two) as a kid. It is absolutely ADORABLE!!! You should be able to buy a kit to light the fireplace, so you can have a flickering fire in Mouse Bag End.
I left a really toxic work environment after a decade and started my own business in 2020. I was so burnt out from the situation I was in for so long that I lost touch with so many of my hobbies and things that brought me joy. I subbed to your channel about 10 months ago because I loved the chicken wire ghost video so much and have vegged out countless nights since then watching your videos as I mentally recovered from the burnout I’ve been navigating. They’re so fun and just the right kind of vibes I need to turn my stress brain off and tap into things that make me happy. I just recently started the 5th book in Harry Potter to finally finish the series after many years of meaning to and I picked up some crafting hobbies again in an effort to bring the vibes I get from your channel into my irl. You have been such a good reminder to find joy in the little things and also how fulfilling creating is in a world full of sucky stuff we can’t control. The parasocial relationship I have with this channel has gotten me back to a much healthier version of myself and I just wanted to say thank you!
Ahhh, this was just the hit of serotonin I needed heading into the weekend. Thank you, Rachel, for creating this whimsical little corner of the interwebs for us. (Does anyone else out there really wish they could just spend a day shopping for doll furniture/antiques/craft supplies/anything with Rachel? Just me?)
Rachel you need to watch Bentley House Minis.. her miniatures…omg… she even made a Addams family mansion and is working on the Beetlejuice house.. She’s extremely talented
Oh you could just make some! Matches (with their fiery little heads chopped of 😳🤭) are your friend! It's quite a bit fiddly but you'd be surprised what you can do with copious amounts of glue and some colours!
Miniatures expert here. Congrats! You are going to start seeing in 1:12 scale! For my fireplaces, I strip most of the plastic off of flickering tealights with pliers, cover the bulb with orange, red yellow cellophane, then glue curls of bark, tiny sticks, rocks, whatever to fit what I am doing. Those chandeliers I attach with strong magnets so I can easily take it out to switch on and off, and replacement batteries are easy to find at Dollar Tree. Most of the time I build the fireplace out of a mac and cheese box. You can texture it with hot glue, caulk, etc. Great work and well done, when did you reach 1 million???
🥺 so smol. So cute. I hope you decorate it for the holidays. I had a dollhouse as a wee lass, and finding those teeny tiny knickknack were just the best. Fabulous job, lady!!
I know, I was idly thinking about doing it as a necklace, then realised earnings would be better, then decided I didn't like the idea enough to do it. I hope one of you do.
I was hoping she'd do this someday!!! So Happy! Also, my parents made my sisters and I a four foot dollhouse, with wainscotting, shingles on top, windows with curtains, and very pretty wallpapers. Seeing all those dollhouses really brought that back ❤
Rachel, That was so freaking fun! I absolutely love little tiny thing's. I have spent many, MANY hours watching people on the internet creating little tiny houses, towns, places of other worlds..... it's so fun! Yours turned out so adorable. I too would just walk past and smile. I'm so happy for the joy this project brought you, and all of us. With so much gratitude and love, Audri
Love it!! Kelsey from The Sorry Girls has also been on a miniature kick too! She made a little mini treehouse in one of her plants :) I’d love to see you make more little scenes
If you are ever in Chicago and find yourself at the Art Institute, make your way to the lowest level of the main building for literally hours of miniatures to stroll through and giggle over. I spent many college days when I should have been in class looking at all the teeny tiny things!
It's impressive enough that you made a fabulous and adorable mouse hobbit home, but to be able to paint inside that bowl while a camera is in the way is the ultimate level of awesome. Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
As someone who made a kit dollhouse, I enjoyed this so much! (Why can I only give one thumbs up?!) During my building adventure I learned some dollhouse builders use a wood called "skinny sticks" for various things. I used them for flooring, moulding, and a "painting" frame. They're narrower even than standard Popsicle sticks. Just wanted to pass it on in case you continue on with miniatures and might like using them!
Collecting old wooden coffee/drink stirrers would be a nice way for floorboards. Some places I know give you them whether you want them or not so it’s a good way to use them instead of them just chucking them.
17:00 For any wood glued down to make furniture or flooring that you still want the grain to show through on, sand it down before staining/painting, so the grain will show through.
Is anyone else just freaking OBSESSED with Rachel's wardrobe!? Like, I want to know where she got all of her clothing (I know she makes some, but the blouses and vests are soooooooooo cuuuuute!!)
I’m so happy that you discovered minis! I got into them earlier this year. There are so many fun TH-cam channels with mini content. Two of my favorites are Nerdforge and Studsons Studio.
Oh my god, the finished product looks absolutely amazing. Also, thank you for showing that it's okay to ask for help from a friend who has done something more than you. That bread looks good enough to eat, it would take all my self control not to chomp it!
I love how you went ahead and furnished and decorated a room but a mini one instead of the farm you were supposed to tackle. It’s a level of fun and creative procrastination I can only hope to achieve 😁
That’s so cute! I made a witch’s shop book nook and a Practical Magic-inspired dollhouse early this year and it was so fun to work in miniature. Nice job!

@@MossyCat0101 well, i dont think we will have a priest, so yes? Lol
You should make someone dressed as and talking like gollum officiate hahaha
that sounds wonderful
@@thebarefoothobbit omb i love that idea lmao
My three favourite things, combined all in one video... Hobbits, miniatures, and Rachel Maksy 😭💖😂💕
Can we all take a minute to appreciate her ✨fabulous✨ hair??!
I wholeheartedly approve of this venture
At my studio here in Scotland I make fairy doors… and fairy nooks. 🧚🏽♂️
Kinda the same idea but you find a lot of them outside ❤
It’s very adorable 🥰🧚🏽♂️
I’ve made tiny swings for their garden and clocks for the wall and little hedgehogs and a garden bench 🎨💜🏴
If you ever venture to Kansas City, they have a toy and miniature museum and it's so amazing to see all the detail put into the minis!
I'll admit it... I kinda want an Explore with Rachel, Halloween edition to explore the demon basement.
🎃😱 yes that could be fun. Especially if using candle(mock candle) light to do it and add to spook factor!
I love this in a very squeeze-it-til-its-eyes-pop-out kind of way
But imagine it gets covered up and years later someone is knocking out walls and finds it… the little treasure that’d be
"why is my body so awkward?" I relate so much to this. Love the humor in all your videos and I always look forward to Friday's because of them.
💝💯 Rachel gives us all a chance to be this awkward amazing creative being❣️
Ahhh, this was just the hit of serotonin I needed heading into the weekend. Thank you, Rachel, for creating this whimsical little corner of the interwebs for us.
(Does anyone else out there really wish they could just spend a day shopping for doll furniture/antiques/craft supplies/anything with Rachel? Just me?)
Same💯
Something about tiny houses is just 😘
So freaking cute and tiny!!!!
Rachel.... your hair in this video... I can't handle it.... Disney princess level of perfection, chef's kisses all around!
Rachel you need to watch Bentley House Minis.. her miniatures…omg… she even made a Addams family mansion and is working on the Beetlejuice house.. She’s extremely talented
One of my favourite channels!
Ara is amazing! The talent she has is remarkable
Finished barn wall - exists
Rachel’s brain - “a perfect place for treasures”
I'm making a fairy house right now, but lack furniture. Hoping the small people have their own 😋
😉😄
Rachel motioning to eat the tiny furniture i think encapsulates people love for miniature things perfectly haha
🥺 so smol. So cute. I hope you decorate it for the holidays. I had a dollhouse as a wee lass, and finding those teeny tiny knickknack were just the best. Fabulous job, lady!!
I’m so tempted to get two tiny chandelier now and make them into giant earrings 🤣🤣
yooo this is sick actually I may do this I have so many earring backings
I know, I was idly thinking about doing it as a necklace, then realised earnings would be better, then decided I didn't like the idea enough to do it. I hope one of you do.
Going to a work meeting and putting a little light on the situation, am I right?
Other than this project being adorable, I love this video for the diversity of earth-toned hobbit outfits you treat us to!
Am I the only one who can't get enough of this woman? I wached the last 4 videos, and I nEeD MoRe!!
I was hoping she'd do this someday!!! So Happy!
Also, my parents made my sisters and I a four foot dollhouse, with wainscotting, shingles on top, windows with curtains, and very pretty wallpapers. Seeing all those dollhouses really brought that back
❤
I love it reminds me of being a child and making fairy houses in the woods near my home.Keep making them!
YES!!!!!!!! miniatures are my absolute favourite of all time. lotr is up there as well. thank i for blessing us with this glorious content
Rachel,
That was so freaking fun!
With so much gratitude and love,
Audri
Absolutely magical
Love it!! Kelsey from The Sorry Girls has also been on a miniature kick too! She made a little mini treehouse in one of her plants :) I’d love to see you make more little scenes
What?! I missed that!!!!
Oh my gosh if Rachel built Lothlórien?!? 😍
I was thinking about that.
If you are ever in Chicago and find yourself at the Art Institute, make your way to the lowest level of the main building for literally hours of miniatures to stroll through and giggle over. I spent many college days when I should have been in class looking at all the teeny tiny things!
Yes! I love the miniature rooms. The Museum of Science and Industry also has a really incredible dollhouse!
I still get amazed by Rachel's brain, honestly. She's so creative and talented ❤❤❤
I'm working towards buying a home for my mother and I. Everytime Rachel posts about her home, it gives me hope (and ideas, so so many ideas 😅).
It's impressive enough that you made a fabulous and adorable mouse hobbit home, but to be able to paint inside that bowl while a camera is in the way is the ultimate level of awesome. Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
When you showed the little chandelier I was lowkey expecting you to bump your head against it (like the Gandalf -scene) XD
Such a cute result
Yesss more random crafts ❤️
Aaaaaaaaaahhh the window adds so much ~mystery~ to it… it genuinely looks like it leads to the shire! I love
May I suspect a fairy garden next spring on the way to your barn or something fairy gardens are awesome. Especially the scary spooky ones
"it's just for me" is the BEST reason to make an effort. you are just as deserving of your efforts as everyone else
The autumnal hobbit-y ‘fits were on point this whole video -chef’s kiss! Excellent craftsman as always my dear!
Miniatures are one of the things that bring me an unreasonable amount of joy
@@thedayaftertomorrow5950 Those look like they'd be a great size! :)
17:00 For any wood glued down to make furniture or flooring that you still want the grain to show through on, sand it down before staining/painting, so the grain will show through.
This reminds me of making little fairy houses in stumps and stacked firewood when I was a kid! I'd forgotten that :)
This is the cutest thing ever!!!!!
Not into miniatures? Girl didn’t you build a whole world in a book and pop it on a shelf? You’re a master
“Bilbo’s your uncle”
I laughed way harder than I probably should have 😂
I loved watching the process of this project so much, it definitely gave me a shot of serotonin right there! 😍
That's the most adorable procrastination project I've ever seen. LOVE IT!
Nice job!
Those little mouse portraits put the biggest smile on my face - so cute!
