I live in Massachusetts, like Rachel, and it makes me SUPER happy to see someone buying a historic home instead of the awful McMansions that are all too common around here. Or buying a perfectly good house and demolishing it to build a huge monstrosity in it's place; clear-cutting the entire lot.
I sniffled at Rachel's husband comforting her when they were moving from their old house that had belonged to her grandmother. I wish them both every happiness in their beautiful new home.

For the yellow bathroom: remove whatever is covering the bulbs, then switch to “daylight” bulbs instead of “soft light” or “warm light.” It made SUCH a difference in my house!

@@omegasage777 There are many different ways to light your home and guides here on youtube, how blue, white or yellow the light is is graded on the Kelvin scale and there are videos explaining that so you know what to look for in the store.

That house is kind of mindblowingly gigantic for me (European living in a 1000 sqf condo soon moving into an even smaller one-floor house) but it's lovely. The little oven, the creepy little nooks, the maybe prohibition-era barn basement... it has a lot of personality. And that backyard is to die for.

Yeah, to think they live there by themselves… meanwhile I’m with my husband and our two kids in 590 sqf 😬 Trying desperately to find a bigger place but that house honestly would feel too big even for us. It’s beautiful though!
Yeah... I always find interesting what is consider "small space" in USA. We just bought 700 sqf flat with my partner (we're also from Europe) and we consider it big for us two and our cat. We used to rent 300 sqf up until now. 😅
But on the other hand I understand that Rachel have different needs than me. She works from home so she needs studio space, office space, sewing room, a lot of storage for her projects. If she will ever want to have kids, they will need some space as well. I'm happy that she found a space to fullfil those needs and within her price range. 😀
My wife and I have a house that’s about 1800sqft and we know we’d never fit kids here. Especially with the pandemic, we’ve each made our own spaces in the spare rooms and the animals have their spaces and I guess we’re very spoiled now lol

Even when I was living with my family we never lived in such a big place. The biggest apartment we had was half that. And when I started living alone I lived in much smaller places 200-400 sqf.

The 'staircase to nowhere' was almost certainly a servant's staircase at one point judging by the fact that it's narrow, steep, and was tucked behind a door. Considering the size of the house itself it's very likely that the original owners could afford and employed a maid, who would have used the staircase rather than the much grander, main staircase.

The new staircase is from 2003 though.
I think it's just the original stairs that got boarded up after the newer addition.
This home doesn’t seem to be structured nor large enough to have housed servants. It’s surely the old set of staircase.
The home would probably be at minimum twice as big and much more fancy and ornate if it weren’t just a farmers home.
True even middle class had a house woman who had to do it all from tend fires to cook and laundry. Those women worked their behinds off and longed to work in a richer home.
My Aunt and Uncle had a much smaller farmhouse than this one and it had a similar narrow staircase that led to a small bedroom which was a maid's quarters. It led directly to the kitchen. Of course the maid would have lived there about a century before they owned it.
This house is INCREDIBLE - we bought a house last fall that's pretty small because we wanted to be close to the city, but seeing your yard/forest just FILLS ME WITH LONGING, all I kept thinking was "you could shoot ANYTHING out there!!" Meanwhile our backyard just means we're always halfway attending our neighbor's porch parties 😂

My parents had the perfect setup, but moved states and sold it. Unfortunately they bought the house after my 1st year in college and so I only ever lived there a few months at a time totally live 8 months or so. They lived just outside of town but close enough that it only took 10 min to get to all of the grocery stores and strip malls and things and like 15 or 20 to get to the high school. They had 1 or 2 acres of woods, it was very much not flat, so "not usable," but I adored their property and when I lived there I would often go out and sit somewhere among the trees to read and absolutely want something similar when we can finally afford to buy a house, which won't be soon...

@@BeeWhistler Same, they work great for pizza, or oven s'mores. I don't think that one would be functional, you need to get the bricks super hot, and the fire would have to be directly in the hearth. I think the cast iron stove would have been added later. My mom used one in a museum she worked at.
I have one in my apartment, it is definitely a scary death hole. We use it as a liquor cabinet, you definitely wouldn't want to put any fire in there.

Lots of old houses have a steep, narrow back stair like that. I was always told they were so that whoever cleaned the house wouldn't be walking up the good front stairs with wet rags dripping on the carpet, but that could be wrong. I've seen numerous houses where they've had something like this done to them. In one, they turned it into storage by building drawers into the stairs, sturdy enough to still go up and down if you needed to.

My grandma’s ranch house had a set of stairs like that. She said they were the original stairs, then when the house was expanded and newer stairs were built on the other side of the house, they kept the old ones so that there was always an emergency escape route. They used to worry about fires a lot because the area was very dry and they were on their own, no fire services available in the county back then. (1890’s California)
As a german, living in a city, having a house is something I will most likely never ever achieve. Seeing people refer to this as "normal adulting" is crazy to me.

I will say, for most in the US, a house this size isn't necessarily "affordable" for people their/my age. I'd say they got lucky on location and having at least one decent income. Most live renting here too because it's what we can afford. :) I'm a dual citizen with Germany and I'd honestly rather be there any day. 😂
Okay, I thought so too. The USA a huge country and judging the whole property availability by one lucky pair is probably not fair. :D

This isn’t normal for most people her age in the US. She mentioned that her previous house was her grandmothers, so I imagine she probably inherited the house and got a decent amount selling it especially in this housing market. She also makes quite a bit off of her TH-cam videos.
I wonder if the "basement" in the barn was an icehouse? If your house predates electricity, a larger farm would have their own icehouse.
Or an old-timey root cellar. They keep everything fresh 🙌
This house has the right balance between cute farm house and cursed weirdness for Rachel. Plus the studio is going to be great, not having to worry about sound or mess in the same way as the last house. Honestly if this were mine though, the pastels would be staying, and I'm perfectly happy for you to judge me for that XD
Fun fact: the Addams family house was pink pastel because that showed best in black and white! Irony at its finest

Since I abandoned all hope of ever owning a house myself what with what Covid brought, I'm living vicariously through you guys! Can't wait to see your craft room all set up and you settled in and maybe even renos or makeovers, and see how you decorate and arrange the house.
ETA: My god, that yard is a dream! And that little forest will look magical once the trees are green and fluffy again.

With the way the cost of living has risen, the inflation and especially the prices of houses (now I would be paying for a studio apartment what I would have payed for a 2-bedroom apartment before the pandemic and everything hit), slim chance of that. I'm trying to stay positive but also realistic.

this!! small *and* split closets sounds like a nightmare and a surefire recipe for forgetting about things and making getting dressed an unpleasant process. put those books downstairs / in the offices and make a library nook, and give your clothes the clothing rack breathing space they deserve!

The 'stairs to nowhere' are probably old servant stairs that were boarded up. Those narrow, high, DANGEROUS stairs were often made for servants because they took up little space, and the wider, safer stairs for the owners of the house with their bigger skirts. This is the reason the stairs in the barn are the same type- because the masters of the house never had to go out there.
Wouldn't the house have been smallish without the renovations? Would the people still have had servants? That's so interesting
that's what I thought as well.
I would have assumed it's from having moved the staircase as some point and that the stairs in the cupboard are what's left of the original ones. I wouldn't expect a farmhouse like this to have servants, without the more modern extention the house itself would be pretty small.

I think chokey #2 is a cellar for cans! (They look like canning shelves) you could def store food cans and other excess food supply stuff there and I think temperature wise they would be good!

I lived in an old house with something similar; it was used as a root cellar that was like a separate room in the basement.

You want the attachable screens for the porch. That way when you're in the peak of bug season you can still use your porch. And then you can remove it when the bugs are minimum or non-existent.

This is a great tip for New England, especially with a pond and the woods on the property. Unless they have a lot of bats nearby (also common in New England, there will be mosquitos up the wazoo)
Hey Rachel!! Love your "new" old house!! The "cooking arm" in the fireplace is called a crane. An alternative name for your sitting room could be a more traditional name, the keeping room and the small office, the parlor... Just some ideas for you. Your home is wonderful and you have a great adventure ahead of you as you make it your own!

I was sad when I moved from my childhood home in California. I hadn't been happy until 2 years ago when me and the hubby bought our own place. We lived with his brother and his family and our boys were getting too dang big.
Not me actually getting emotional with Nick picked Rachel up and spun her around and the voiceover said "it means a lot to have found this place" ✨✨✨

It's so wonderful to see this historic property pass into the hands of someone who will love and cherish it, and will not tear it down to build 63 identical townhouses. As a person who lives in an old house to another, keep in mind carpets (or rugs) are great insulation.

If you can swing it drains in your bathroom floors makes mopping so much faster and easier and you don't risk flooding your whole house. Ventilation is a must in a bathroom, and so are moisture barriers, and licensed installers cause they are insured.
Also they did some experiments recently, up north. If you have enough insulation you can heat your house with your refrigerator motor, that means no spending $10,000 or thereabouts on a house furnace.
Never let anyone tell you, you can't have something because someone else might need it. They're both devaluing you, and the other person in need.
Wait, American bathrooms don't have floor drains? I thought that was a normal thing. Even my downstairs loo under the stairs has a floor drain. (I live in Australia.)

This video has gotten me through this entire year. I've watched it dozens of times while working to finally get our first home, after being told we inherited my childhood home when I lost my dad. The mix of excitement and nostalgia and as Rachel said, the emotional burden of being the one to leave the family home, is such an overwhelming mix of emotions. We officially got our house last week, which is very bittersweet so close to the holidays.

Most folks are struggling with housing. Nowadays, unless you're making six-figures, then more likely family members are helping you get on the property ladder. Rachel was lucky to inherit her grandma's house otherwise this Farmhouse purchase would likely never have happened.
I have my home because my dad moved and I rent it from him. Almost everyone I know is renting with an outrageous rent price especially in my state. I can’t even imagine where I’d be without my dad and his letting me rent here..

As someone struggling through a major housing crisis- this is so much more encouraging than you know. Being able to see someone relatively my age doing the awesome things really gives me hope 🖤 we are currently my daughter, my partner& our pets crammed into my family's home- with my family. Idaho's market moved out of our capabilities when covid hit. We were approved for a loan in the morning and about to bid on a house when at 4:50pm our loan advisor called telling us he could no longer make it work because of how bad things were. Please- let the rest of us live through you 😅
When you pull the carpet in the old rooms/part of the house, there might already be hardwood flooring you can refinish. Have fun with the new place.

I have carpet and 2 cats - one shreds everything he sees (but he is Siamese - DOH - smart choice there!!!) and the other a black and white moggie who loves the couch too much to destroy it....so cats are very individual!

Lately I have found myself contemplating that someday I will have to do the same and I always felt somewhat guilty about how attached I was to what others in my life would call “just a house.” After you shared what you were going through and even showed video of your process I realized it really was completely normal and that when the time comes it will be ok to linger, reminisce, and feel all the hard feelings in my own time! 💓

paint before carpet comes up so then you can get paint on the carpet and it doesn't matter. Just coming from personal experiences, love your house :)
I had a house that was notorious for making homemade hooch during Prohibition. It was half a block from Lake Erie, so it even had a tunnel to the lake! There was a huge cement tub in the basement. Lotta fun!

We are moving into my husband's grandmother's 1940's era log home. We have done some work to it and there is a lot left to do...but I love it SO MUCH. Knotty pine walls, awkward transition area too small to call a hallway, lopsided upstairs bath with a tiny shower and enough room to house my art desk and supplies! We have 6 acres of mostly woods too and it is glorious. I cleared the old walking trail and added some more paths. Congratulations on this beautiful home!
I love your "old room" - I would call it the drawing room or parlour. As someone who grew up in a 1750s (?) old crumbling house, I think you have the exact right level of spookiness.

They're just starting up, and I'm winding down. How nice is it they want a family? Not wanting to raise or have children is an option, but I believe Rachel mentioned children in her future. I can't wait to see the house's progression. I'm so excited for Frodo and friends, and us! I think we helped make that happen and all it cost me to support someone's dreams is tuning in and subscribing. The fireplace has a crane, so it was for cooking, hence the original kitchen. The "stairs to nowhere" were very likely the original/back stairs.

People have preserved food and stored them in cool dark places. Those places with sketchy floors might be root (vegetable) cellar are great if you want to grow your own vegetables and other food, herbs and flowers(tea too!) Enjoy the process of refurbishing and refinishing is a great past time, or hobby! I loved redoing rooms and decorating!

In regards to your Grandmother's house, think of it this way. Your family had lots of years to have important moments and create memories in that home, but now you have given a whole new family the chance to experience new memories and fall in love with the home. You have left your mark but it's time to see what a new family can add to those memories and imprints.
I grew up with a flag pole. One of the very fun things you can do is to find a different flag to display for random reasons. You can display nation flags to celebrate their holidays, for example. Or celebrate cool historic moments with a flag that relates.
As a kid it was so much fun to have.
Also the creepy basement area is your cellar, yes? That is natural food storage for canned goods. If you ever do a garden and make preserves for a week or month, you'll appreciate the space.

That thingy in the fireplace is called a crane. It's used to hang a cooking pot over the fire. It was commonly used right up through the end of the 19th century. (Maybe even through the early 20th century out in the country) Having an oven beside or behind the fireplace was also very common. You're lucky because you have a few acres of woods to harvest deadfall wood to use in your fireplaces & wood burning stove. Do yourselves a favor & have a chimney sweep come out to inspect & clean all the chimneys.
Home with some history, your own forest, little fish pond, shed and a staircase to nowhere?! Sounds perfect to me!

That might have to depend on how they were initially installed. My parents' old cabinets were all one piece somehow and wildly fell apart on detachment from the wall.
