I had some concerns about my desired path into medicine. Im in my 5th year of undergrad with one more to go.
The more I research the more I love the DO programs over the traditional MD and with the 2020 residency merger approaching I wanted to ask what the best routes for a non traditional student such as I (6 years Army) to have a good chance of matching into an orthopedic residency. I've always wanted to go into orthopedics since I was a boy scout with an orthopedic surgeon scout master who I spent years learning about his job from. However I feel concerned with the remaining stigmas DO's face and wonder if working for an MD program is more advantageous. My major concern there is that my School is not an R1 school so all of my research hours cant be applied out of state (UT) and since I switched to the Army Reserves I cant do summer research events as I owe a large part of my summer to the Army.
Any insight you could provide would be great. Thank you for your time.
I love you and your work doctor Webb, my parents and family all work in the medical field and my parents want me to become a doctor along with myself, my sister is in her 3rd year of a 7 year BS/MD program which I strive to get into which is called Sophie Davis School of BioMedical Education. hey dr.webb im a sophomore and my gpa is only 3.5 but im in all ap and honors courses avalible... im planning on getting a's for the rest of highschool, considering its only a month into my 2nd highschool year, hopefully rising it up to or over a 4.0 by senior year... how do you think colleges will view me with my rough start freshman year... also should i go to a university or a college?

Thanks for the comment and watching! Good questions and good job so far in High school. I think 3.5 is pretty good but continue doing what it takes to improve and apply to college broadly. I think you will be fine! I always recommend to students to start off at a 2 year community college to: 1. Save money 2. Smaller classes 3. More 1:1 time to professors. And, then transfer to a 4 year university! I hope this helps and keep up the good work!

GoldenGoku class rank is more important, high GPA means you don't have to do as well on the SAT
Don't worry about it. Even if your GPA was a 3.0 you could still become a doctor as long as you're willing to work hard enough in college. Look at high school as more of a practice for college.
It’s interesting that people say “do what you’re passionate about in undergrad...don’t worry about being a biology major...”, but if you’ve decide to go to medical school and practice medicine (pretty much biology) for the rest of your life, wouldn’t the biology major be what you’re passionate about? Why would I spend four years learning computer science, if that’s what I was passionate about, just to go to medical school? Not trying to ruffle feathers here, just making an observation.
I’m a non traditional, 28 y/o freshman (did 8 years as Army x-ray tech after high school) undergrad student at UT San Antonio. Bio major pre-med, hence why I’m watching Dr. Webb’s videos. Lol

Not necessarily. You dont have to be passionate about biology to become a doctor. I just did it because I was unaware you can major in something else besides biology or chemistry. Lately, most med schools have started to like students with non bio/non chem degrees. But, major in something that you enjoy learning about. If it's not bio or chem, then do the pre-reqs additionally. If you want to major in music, then do that. And then just do the pre-reqs for med school. That will be perfectly fine and may actually make you stand out from the majority who have a biology or chemistry degree. If I had to recommend a degree to a pre medical student, it would be to pick a major that after you graduate (and while applying to medical school) that you can make some income. Examples include: nursing degree, tech jobs associated with a degree, computer degrees, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for the question. I get this question a lot. It's kind of hard to answer this question completely without knowing your story (family life, previous life experiences, future goals, etc) but here are my thoughts: You will be in your career working as a physician for 20-30+ years and I know the road to get to that point is arduous and lengthy, but I do believe it's worth it. You have to ask yourself, "Am I willing to sacrifice family and personal time, sacrifice a minimum of 8-10 years of my life and sacrifice financially to become a doctor?" And if that answer is yes, I say go for it. The average age in my medical school class was roughly 26-30 years old (oldest being 42 and youngest 23) and I currently work with 2 orthopedic surgeons who are 80+ years old. They have been a doctor for longer than I have been born. So, starting off medical school at (to overestimate it) 40 years old, you will be done around 50 years old and still can work 20 years and retire at 70.

Thank you for taking the time out your busy day to answer my question. I asked myself am I willing to give my life and time in becoming a MD and after watching more of your videos, the answer is Yes I know it will be worth it.
I watched your interview with Dr. Adar Radiologist and was fascinated (not only because he works from home lol) but I have more of a personality of a Radiologist, for instance I’m a introvert so I like being by myself at times and I can sit all day in a room. 2 I like the flexibility/hours that radiology offers.
Also I do want to have kids someday and I know that it will be challenging but I know/pray I’ll be ok, hopefully I can work for a private outside company so that I can work from home too!
Oh and by the way I’m a African American women from San Francisco Friscoooo 🙌 I seen my mom struggle all her life. I work in the Medical field. I’ve worked for General surgeons, colorectal surgeon, infectious disease MD, internal medicine MD and a Pulmonologist. I thought I wanted to be colorectal surgeon just because it’s not too many women colorectal surgeons out there preferably on the west coast, but now I know I want to be a Radiologist, It just fits my personality better!
I also use to work for the Radiology department (scheduling) and I use to see them in their dark quiet room and it looked so relaxing 😎
Now I work for one of the top Hospitals in California submitting Authorizations (submitting authorization request to patients insurance company so that scans can get paid for at little to no cost for the patient). for CT MRI PET SCAN US etc....
I just wanted to say thank you thank you thank you. I’m scared out my mind but I’m strong mentally so I know that I will make it.
