One thing I wished I would've discovered earlier in med school was to wake up 2 hours before our 8am exams, and review my high yield notes. My exam scores boosted from doing that because my brain was warmed up and I'm reviewing last minute non-conceptual, but instead short-term memory factoids that get you those extra points on the exam.

18 hours is nuts, but I'm working my way up into those long hours of studying! Some of my crazy methods for studying I've employed are waking up at 12 or 1am and studying until class at 8am. We usually get out of lectures by about 4pm most days. When I get home I listen to lecture, TH-cam, or Step 1 videos as I cook. Then when I'm in the shower, bring the laptop in on chair, and continue listening to recorded lectures. Sleep for 4 - 5 hours, get up at midnight to study again, rinse and repeat. It's all about dedication and putting that work 100%!!!

This isn't going to work forever. You are overexhausting yourself. I also used extreme ways to learn, with almost no pauses and I overexhausted my nervous system and I have to take medication for 3 months to solve this problem. Do not repeat my mistakes.

bro you must sleep at night because we are meant to sleep at night we arent nocturnal.. do some yoga, eat fruits .. use the digital support to a very low level.. change your studying positions like from classroom to library and then to home ... and do constant yoga.. talk with people .. 4 hours sleep is like i know that for most medical students we have to go through that .. but keeping some healthy habbits can reduce the effect of sleeping less ..

I feel less crazy after watching this video! I always squeeze in at least a 6-7 hour cram session before a medical school exam. No matter if the exam is at 7AM or 11AM. I use the time to read over all of my lecture note summaries one last time quickly, read the first aid chapter that corresponds to the exam topics, and finally, cram as much pharmacology/microbiology with the time I have left. I gain and retain so much knowledge in those quiet morning hours before the exam, and it feels like I am the only person in the world who’s awake at that hour.

For studying in a time crunch I just turn my notes into songs and accronyms and I even stimulate my brain by chewing hard on something crunchy. Basically I un-boring it and it works

The craziest thing I remember that I have done in medical school was when I was in my 2nd year and we had to have drawings of the staff we learnt in the pathology lab.
I don't know why I didn't just do one after every lesson anyway I found myself having to drawing 10 a weekend before the exam and it was mandatory that we had those drawings inorder to sit for the exam .The crazy part was I didn't sleep the entire weekend (3 days)straight I know it sounds impossible but I did it,the only rest I got is when I took a nap for like 30 minutes on my study table and I walked straight into the exam room with the exhaustion of the weekend#super crazy!😥

  • @Ryan78336

I used to transcribe lecture slides as Cornell style notes. I’d adapted that system to suit me. Then I started actually going to my local office works with all of that weeks content on a USB and having them printed and bound so that I could scribble notes on the slides as I was in the class. I also found Kahn academy super helpful when leaning haematology or other bioscience subjects. I would read the skill book and then learn the skill on TH-cam before the prac. I would offer myself as a tutor for others and I did thousands and thousands of practice meds calc problems. Now I’m in university earning my bachelors and these tips still work. Not the transcribing part but having the lecture slides with you as you listen to the lecture is very helpful. Now I actually use an iPad and I take notes on notability while recording the lecture. I later distill these notes into summaries and concept maps.
Some things I did to sharpen my other skills; when I was watching medical shows I would try and deduce the problem before it was diagnosed like you figure out the murderer in a crime show, I use these as exercises. I play diagnostic games, I read and annotate articles and I do picture puzzles. It will ask you if the scene is a murder or a suicide and you have to find evidence that helps you answer the question. These are not nursing related but I like them because they help sharpen my powers of obvervation which are very helpful. On the job I try to learn everything. Everything I can about my patients, I try to make sense of any results that come back, I try to make sense of their ecgs or bloods or x rays. And I seek out collaboration with their medical officers because those times when I get to work closely with the medical team teach me the most. I make a point of developing a working rapport with my docs because his not only helps my patients but also helps me learn. I keep a running professional log too (like the captains log from Star Trek) where I critic my reflect on my days or nights work. I do this for my academic study too when appropriate. When I’m studying I truly get lost in my work, I loose track of time and my studying becomes exauhstive and extensive. I overthink what I’m studying and in overthink my patients condition and course of recovery. There are times when ol be standing in the corridor on the ward looking at a blood result or an ecg or anything else any other finding and I’ll be talking to myself thinking out loud trying to make sense of it stream of consciousness style. I do this while pacing at home too. It walking or cooking. Everything I do no matter how wired it is helps me learn. But at the same time the more efficient I can make my studies and the sharper my observational and concentration skills become the better I get at my studies and my work. I actually had a discussion with my friends. I told them not to let my manic obsession with my studies discourage them. That this is going to happen and I may have to sacrifice time with them to study. But this isn’t a choice for me, it’s a need.

If it didn't take so long to write it all out, would you have still kept doing it and gotten even better grades and STEP 1 score than you did in medical school?
