    I applied to medical school for the first time in 2016 and was rejected, primarily due to my cumulative GPA and my MCAT. I am just over one month away from completing my master's program (currently have a 4.00) and retaking the MCAT and I am SO excited to reapply. :D

      @@hawaiianhonu97 @Robo Redneck I had one entire year where I failed everything (went through so crazy stuff), so my cumulative was a 2.76. My MCAT at the time was a 501 as well.
      When I applied last cycle, I had the 4.00 in my SMP and I retook the MCAT and got a 513. I ended up getting 9 MD interviews, went to 8 of them, and got 4 acceptances! I just started orientation at my top choice school this Monday :)

    I’m trying to keep you updated on my Med Journey. I, on my day off went to the University of Miami hospital and stood outside the OR and waited for a Surgeon to walk out. Luckily, a black ENT resident walked out and I straight up asked him if I could shadow him and he said follow me, so I followed him and he took me to a panel he was a part of called “Minorities in Medicine”. There was 12 residents who are minorities and they answered my and others aspiring med students questions. I actually saw another black Orthopedic Doctor in his PGY-3. He and the others gave me sound advice. Crazy how life is. I really randomly went to the hospital and just waited for a surgeon. He loved that I did that, if I want something I go and get it!!!!!!! Tomorrow there’s a big annual bbq for Doctors and med students I’ll be attending! You truly are my inspiration Dr.Webb. Btw I was in the Air Force for like 2 months lol.

    I’m glad I found your channel, I really needed to hear this. Especially the part about the path to medical school not always being the exact same. I’ve always wanted to be a surgeon but I got discouraged due to my financial situation, then my GPA dropped due to a lot of at home issues and family deaths, so I just gave up for a while. My path has not been a straight shot but your story gives me so much hope that I’ll be able to achieve my dream career. Thank you for telling your story, it means a lot to people like me who have gotten lost and discouraged on the way to our goals.

    I teared up when you got to the part in your story about the acceptance letter. You worked so hard to improve your chances and did not let the rejections dissuade you in the least. You got some heart, man. I may have to do a post-bacc program as well because I've been out of school for just over 20 years. Yeah, I'm 45 and changing careers from business. I know it's going to take a lot of sacrifices, but staying in an unfulfilling career is a much bigger sacrifice. Anyway, thanks for stoking the inner fires and empowering my dream.

    Dr. Webb l can’t speak for everyone else but you inspire me to become more Driven. l have wanted to be a neurosurgeon ever since l seen Ben Carson’s movie “Gifted Hands” in 2009 and how Beautiful yet complex the Brain is. l want to become a Pediatric Surgeon because l really like kids. You show me a realistic point of view from a African American male. Now days when people ask me what l want to be and l say a Pediatric Surgeon they get shocked and then later on say how great it is because there aren’t a lot of black men surgeons pushed into the spotlight. I’m working on all of my weaknesses so that l can live the reality l have wanted since l was 15. Man keep doing what you doing and staying positive. Push your self to be the greatest Orthopedic Surgeon. l wish the best of luck to you and your lady real talk we need to see more love in the community and less violence. 👌🏾✊🏾

    I'm thinking to go to med school,but i'm not so driven to.I'm questioning my satisfaction for biology i used to like this in school and high school was something i remember and i don't know why because no one pushed me to learn it,but i did it myself.Last year when i was in final year of high school i was thinking to prepare myself for final exams and if i remember well my first option was med school.This was quickly turned off and so i went on a wrong road.Now i'm afraid to say i don't like it any more or as much as i did the years before because i have to take a road and the first things that i remember i liked was biology at some point i was fascinated about the human body to see how it works to learn more because this was the starter for this:satisfaction from knowing all of these and later the thing about how the body works... now i'm an average teenager i'm 19 years old about to go on 20 and stuck here with these...physics sound interesting but i never in my life did learn phyisics because was something i didn't like at that time.This guy over here telling me he got into med school at age of 28 encourages me to hop on this chance but i told you what stops me is the thing i don't know if i like as much as i did before and i can see from now but reality is not what you feel from your illusions and imagination or how would you be in action right here...i did this one time with something else and i can't but i urgently can't do this one more fucking time.

Came out with my degree at age 21, and worked for 2 years. This year I sat GAMSAT and got into med school. I should be out as a doctor by 28, and finish my two internships a 30. Long road, but definately worth, hoping to go into sports medicine and god willing, to be an orthopeadic surgeon.

    I am in the situation as you were. I'm currently active duty Air Force stationed in San Antonio. I attend night classes at St. Philips. I just decided to pursue the route of MD instead of nursing. Where did you get your bachelors from? And how long did it take you? The Air Force has a couple of commissioning programs that allow enlisted members to go to a post bac program at USUHS that helps them get into med school but requires additional service commitment. I'm considering just getting out the AirForce once my enlistment is up and attend med school using the GI bill. I would love some advice on that aspect as well. I love your videos bro!

    Hi Antonio I am currently in the milatary and badly want to become a doctor. I have only one year of college coming into the navy and plan on continuing my education for a bachelors degree. I know I will also have to do a mixture of online and in person classes. With that being said does the medical schools question about some of the online classes that you took? Most of my classes I will try to take in person using the TA but when I deploy I want to continue to take classes. And I hear you say you’ve went to about 6 different schools and could only imagine that they questioned it. If you can please give me some insight. Thanks!

    Dr. Webb. Question: I saw that you was in the military first before you came a doctor . What college did you attend too for night classes and weekends classes where you take your prerequisites while you was in the military, the reason why I asked , because I’m processing with the military and was curious on how you did all that together

    Thanks for sharing Dr Webb, what a remarkable and inspiring story! Just curious, do you recommend a post bac or a masters program? Does a masters program give you a good chance to get accepted to a school if you’re undergrad gpa wasn’t quite high enough for admission at first?

      Either one. Pay attention to costs. Find a program (masters or post bac) with a direct linkage to the medical school. These are the best ones.

      Antonio J. Webb, M.D. thanks for your reply I really appreciate it! I’ve asked an admissions director if doing a masters or post bac would be better for someone in my situation, and she said doing well in a masters and demonstrating a good MCAT score would help my case, so I’ve elected to do a masters. One I applied to that I’m thinking of going to provides courses similar to what first year medical students take, and I’m thinking of doing that. They say many of their students within a year of graduating tell them they get accepted to school, and they have an automatic interview criteria w their school also (its through the graduate division at the medical school). The cost is a bit steep though, and they don’t seem to offer much by way of financial assistance. Sorry for the long post Dr. Webb, but i just wanted to know what you’d think? Would this be a viable program/is it worth it, and how do you think I could go about paying for it? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!!

    Doctor Webb, seeing as is video made me realize how much medical schools really emphasize your grade point average as well as your Mcat scores, how important would you say that volunteer work is? I work full time and I'm almost done with my undergraduate. Unfortunately, some semesters I can work up to 60 hours per week and given that I go to school full time that leaves very little time, if any, to actually volunteer given that I still have to study for said classes. So, how heavily does volunteer work weigh when you are applying for med school? and, it's not as if I can stop working because u have financial obligations such asrent, car, utility bills etc.

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good question. If you have time to do it, then do it! Dont let it affect your grades. Grades and MCAT are most important so focus on those

    Dr. Webb, I'm 32 and have been going to college for 14 years (with 1 year break in 2014). Like you, it has been a very long road. I am at my wit's end and would appreciate your input on whether or not I should continue this "informal post-bacc" at my local university or a "formal" one out-of-state as you did at Georgetown University. I am a Louisiana resident, I have 2 undergrad degrees (chem & bio), I have a 3.0 GPA with a steep incline for the past 3 years, I have several years of clinical experience, and am currently involved in cancer research. I was prepared to move to Texas NEXT YEAR to partake the Texas Academic Fresh Start to improve my chances, and apply to DO and Caribbean schools. I am willing to do what to takes, so do you think doing a "formal post bacc" at Georgetown would better prove to adcoms that I can handle the rigors of medical school? I haven't taken the MCAT. Thank you for all the helpful and inspirational videos!

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I would take the MCAT and see where you stand. It's hard to completely answer your question without knowing that. Also most post bac programs (atleast the ones I looked at) require you to have taken it at least once. But, a post bac program with a direct matriculation into their medical school is prob the best one, in my opinion

      Taylor I agree with Dr. Webb and also suggest that you take a MCAT prep course with either tpr or kaplan. They will comprehensively review all the material for the mcat and provide tons of resources to study. Plus u take the mcat right after the class.
      With a 3.0gpa, decent mcat(504+), and your great ECs I can see u definitely getting into a do school or even md the first time you apply.
