good reaction. Let's see if this one pysses off the mal fanboys. lol He's a good guy, but some think he's flawless. Hilarious that they threw a tantrum over your last critique of him being wrong in the Shin dig (which he was). oh well, I enjoyed both reactions. Keep them coming!
Mal left them because he couldn't find them and save Book. So he saved Book who was dying and then returned to save them. As he said, he didn't want to lose three people. None of that makes him a bad guy. It's also impossible for him to ever really be a truly good guy as most of his work is illegal. But he definitely isn't evil. I don't think Book would have swayed these people at all. "She reads minds snd soreads falsehoods."* So, is she reading your mind or is she lying? The fact that none of the people notice that contradiction is another reason they wouldn't care what Book says. *Reminds me of a certain political figure who was complaining about people leaking classified information while simultaneously claiming the info was fake. Why would lies be classified? His supporters never questioned that.
Some people miss a subtle comment by River about "Daddy will come for us" or something to that effect, and think she was referring to her and Simon's progenitor... when in actuality she was speaking about Mal...the "Dad" of their little Serenity family .. every one of the crew has a position in said family. 😊
Mal never Sucks in terms of caring for people. He is written as a hero with a loss of faith. His mean sparing with Inara is because she creates distance because of the strict rules of the Guild. He has said over and over that he would never abandon his crew. of course he was going to come back for them once Book was safe,
No mystery. He’s a shepherd. He just wasn’t BORN a shepherd. (Truthfully, though, his character reminds more than a little of Clint Eastwood’s character in the 1985 movie “Pale Rider”).
This episode should explain Mal to you. In Serenity Valley, he was responsible for 2,000 people. He lost almost all of them. Mal is extremely tribal. Doesn't matter if he likes you... you're in his tribe, on his crew, that creates certain obligations... both ways. This goes back to his responsibilities in Serenity Valley. He's also as honest as he can be. He doesn't like cheating people. He doesn't mind stealing from yankees... the Alliance... but that's because he's still at war with them. Mal's learned that he has to do what he has to do to survive and keep his crew together, and how he feels comes second to that.
He's military. From day one you get taught that you can rely on each other when things go south, so you'd better prove your loyalty and capability, because the weak link gets a bunch of other people killed. Mal was a sergeant in a front line company, which means he was responsible for people in active combat. Doesn't matter if he only likes a few of his crew, they're his crew and he's going to take care of them.
Mal is complex. He is still rough in humor and jaded about humanity and disappointed in God from his experiences in war. As their relationships develop so does he.
Nice reaction. Some of my thoughts on this episode below: "You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this?" Between the events of "Bushwhacked" & "Safe", Simon is learning just how fortunate he is to be a member of Mal's crew. I love the scene when River quickly learned all the local dance steps and within minutes became the center of attention as she was innovating new dance moves. The Hill Folk were hiding in the bushes overhearing Mal talking to Simon and calling him Doctor. That is why the scene kept panning to the bushes. We also hear a twig snap at one point from the location of the bushes. "Daddy will come and take us home" Daddy = Mal, Home = Serenity. River speaks the truth but cryptically. Simon has yet to learn this. Mal's crew is his family. Notice how "Dad" Mal never abandoned Simon when Simon's actual parents were willing to do just that. There is a big difference between being nice to your children and actually being there for them when it really matters. The problem with the Tam's parents = They have been indoctrinated by Fascism. In their eyes, River is safe because the Alliance knows what is best for all of us. Everyone must follow the rules without question. No one wants black marks on their social records. Why Simon doesn't understand this is very frustrating to the Tam Parents. *Priorities:* Mal never intended to abandon Simon & River for long. Mal gambled that Simon & River should be safe for a later rescue while he gets Shepherd Book some urgent medical help. We can speculate that Mal's military background taught him guerilla war tactics (like how to hide in the hills). The Hill Folk are good at evading the townsfolk = similar tactics. This factored into why Mal knew there wasn't enough time to search for Simon. Probably also why Mal was able to later find Simon & River as quickly as he did. At the end: River steals Jayne's dinner roll off his plate. She intentionally sat next to Jayne. Perhaps she intended "payback" because she knew Jayne had earlier stolen Simon's things. Notice after the crew gets paid for a job well done, their family meals improve drastically.
Look at it this way for Mal... You're seeing limited bits of him. You're maybe making some assumptions about him, or presumptions as to his motives that weren't intended. But you love Kaylee, and Kaylee loves and respects him 100%. Same for Zoey, Shepherd Book, everyone, even Jane. Mal has to have done things to earn that kind of loyalty from everyone. Even if you don't always see it. Maybe for their sake he gets the benefit of the doubt.
I don't mind if you don't like Mal. He can def be an ass a lot of the times. But the nuance of his character is so fascinating. The way he takes control of a situation, finds a way to keep his people safe, his honorable qualities. He's a grey character and I love it. Totally fine if you don't though. The issue I had with the last video was that you liked ATHERTON WING!? Not liking Mal is one thing but liking Atherton is whole 'nother level of wrong! He's disgusting in every way possible. Possessive, rude, crass, pompous. Sees Inara as a possession. Even the way he fights is dishonorable. Just EW. I hate him. 😂
Mal doesn't kind of suck. But he sometimes has to make tough decisions that folks might not like... For example, in this episode, Shepherd Book was dying and needed medical care fast. They didn't have time to find out where in the hills Simon had been taken, there are likely several such small settlements in those hills, and guessing wrong means Book dies. And the hillfolk take people they need for their community - if they had just taken Simon he would have been safe for weeks if that is what it took to find him. Mal did what was needed to save the person that was in most immediate danger. What Mal doesn't do is take time to explain his every decision - that's a trait leaned in the military. It is a flaw sometimes, but it is ingrained in his character, when he gives an order he expects it to be carried out without having to explain himself. The civilians don't necessarily understand that.
"Safe": Jayne likes smackin' the cattle, the crew go window shopping in town, and Simon suffers from foot-in-mouth disease. The cattle sale goes South, Shepherd Book is hit in the crossfire, River goes dancing, and Simon is kidnapped by Hill people. Book's ID magically opens an Alliance cruiser's medical facilities, Simon and River try to blend in with the religious fanatic Hill people. River reveals too many secrets and is seen as a Witch, Simon gets ready to be roasted, and Jayne gets to hang out. The "big damn heroes" come for "our Witch" and Simon learns where he and River stand on "Serenity."
