"Ivan" is a crazy Ivan, a maneuver invented by Soviet sub captains to evade pursuit. a sub's sonar sensors are all found facing forward in the bow. when a Soviet sub suspects an enemy sub is following them he has his sub pull a 180 so the sensors are facing backwards & sends a sonar blast that temporarily blinds any sub that's following behind then turns in a random direction & heads off, taking advantage of any potential enemy's temporary blindness for cover. the maneuver was popularized by The Hunt For Red October but it's a real thing.

So excited you are doing Firefly. This is by far my favorite show ever. Could have easily been 10 seasons if the network hadn't screwed them. The show has so much heart. Great writing. Great characters. Great cast. So thankful we got the movie to ease the pain of the stunted end to the show. Looking forward to your journey aboard Serenity.
Okay, my usual speech... Before writing Firefly, Joss Whedon had read a book about the Confederate War; this story is based loosely on that idea. The Independents, for whom Mal fought, battled the Alliance; think of them as the South and North, respectively. And it ended pretty much the same way. There is a deleted scene you should see, where Zoe explains to Simon about what happened in Serenity valley... It was pretty bad. NOT A SPOILER Mal had been a sergeant in charge of about 20 soldiers, including Zoe. Officer attrition was so great, he ended up commanding 2,000. When they were told to stand down, both sides left the remaining 600 sitting there in Serenity valley. After a couple of weeks when they were retrieved, there were about 200 left... and of Mal's original command, only Zoe. You might guess that Mal never got over that experience.
I can't wait to see you react to this. One of my favourite series. Ever. Edit: Your reaction to Crow's departure was everything one could hope for. Also... no one escapes the lure of Firefly. Watch one episode... made you can turn away... 2... or more your hooked and too invested to stop. When it aired the "network" screwed everything up and cancelled the show... but the Brown Coats keep growing with every new person that starts watching it.
Great writing, great acting, great worldbuilding, great set design and costuming. This show is the magic that happens when the stars align. Hope you continue to enjoy the series, it's a wonderful ride.

I had recently been binge-watching through some of your more recent uploads I've missed, and I'm so happy to see that you're doing Firefly. I can assure you my fellow Browncoats are going to be here for it. Just something to keep in mind about this show... The moral/ethical principles, ideology, and motivations of the characters are at least as important as the events they experience throughout the series. So, I think you already have the right idea in wanting to understand these characters better.

I saw when you uploaded this and I had to hold off until you had a few episodes up because I knew I’d binge it. Introducing people to this series is a great pleasure of mine, and it never fails to leave them wanting more. I mean, we got a movie out of it to tie up loose ends and wrap up the story, but there was so much potential in this series that just wasn’t recognized when it aired originally. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time, idk. They give us so many nuggets that hint at an excellent and deep lore and world that could’ve been explored, but we got what we got, and at least we got that. Can’t wait for you to finish the series and see Serenity.

When the soldiers are searching Serenity, everybody makes a comment about "why are they looking for River and Simon under the plates?" What everybody is forgetting is that we as viewers know that River and Simon are on the ship but the soldiers in the show don't have this knowledge. They only suspect that the 2 fugitives might be on board and don't know for sure. They are tearing the ship apart looking for contraband. Remember when they were first boarded and the commander mentioned how older ships like Serenity have all those nooks and crannies.
You are in for a fun ride. Just remember, this was cancelled half way through the season and the movie is meant to wrap up what they didn't get to. The movie was also intended as a pitch to restart the series if it was successful.
It's great to see a new Browncoat! One of the many reasons I love this show is that almost all of the exposition is done through dialog. And the characters are so well written that we get invested in them from the start. A sci-fi/western/comedy was unique an nothing has come close since. What Fox did to this show is criminal.
This will be a bitter sweet adventure. It's a great show that was not allowed to live up to it's full potential, but at least got an incredible movie to close it's legacy with.

As a fun little clue to the level of attention to detail being paid by the characters (and producers), when the alliance is searching the ship and we see the dining table on the pullback reveal of Simon and River being outside? The number of place settings has been changed. They took away the place settings used by Simon and River so that the number would match the crew the alliance had already seen.

If you haven't realized, when you hear them speaking Chinese, most of the time they are cursing, but because the words or meanings don't translate exactly the same from Chinese to English, they used Chinese to get past the censors. So, anytime you hear them "cursing" just insert your favorite English curses.

_buffy_ is the all-time greatest series. _firefly_ is more fully formed out the gate and it had such incredible potential, but was never allowed to realize that potential.

This is going to be EPIC. I've seen all the episodes and the movie many, many times, but seeing someone discover the characters and idiosyncrasies for the first time NEVER gets old. For the record, Jayne is my favorite character. His ability to make every scene he's in more entertaining by giving the other characters someone to play off is highly underappreciated. Book's "man of mystery" schtick makes him a very close second. Just sayin'.

For the record, Jayne is my favorite character. His ability to make every scene he's in more entertaining by giving the other characters someone to play off is highly underappreciated. Book's "man of mystery" schtick makes him a very close second. Just sayin'.

I'm so glad you are watching this series. It's one of my favorites. Everyone who watches it ends up wishing it hadn't been stupidity canceled by FOX. As good as it was, it had so much more potential.

Hey Addie, you need to watch FIREFLY, deleted scene #2. It will give you alot of insight who Macolm Renolds is and his relationship with Zoe. I never understood why they cut this scene.
