Isn’t Donkey from the fairytale The Musicians of Bremen, where a bunch of talking animals- donkey included- form a band after their owners all try to get rid of them? That’s why the old woman is trying to sell Donkey in the beginning, because that’s how the story starts.
Oak singing along with Hallelujah actually made my week so thank you for being you. Loved seeing this pop up but couldnt believe anyone could have NOT seen it! It was a joy to revisit with my three favorite reactors - and made me feel the passage of time keenly. 23 years ago!?!? Wth.
It´s hilarious that John Lithgow, who is 6′ 4″ tall, voiced Lord Farquaad. Like when you let Warwick Davis or Danny DeVito voice Lurch from Adams Family or Sasquatch. 😂
The word of mouth was STRONG in this one. It was one of the few movies that made MORE its second weekend than the first when it initially released. Such classic hilarity.
Rest in peace Chris Farley 1964-1997 Kathleen freeman 1923-2001 William Steig 1907-2003 Roger Ebert 1942-2013 Richard Schickel 1933-2017 and Kelly Asbury 1960-2020, Chris Farley was initially hired to voice Shrek, and he had recorded nearly all of the dialogue for the character, but died before completing the project, according to David Spade on an episode of the podcast Bad Friends, Farley only had 5 days left of voice work and Farley’s brother John was asked if he would come in and finish his lines but John refused, a story reel featuring a sample of Farley’s recorded dialogue was leaked to the public in August 2015, DreamWorks then re cast the voice role to Mike Myers, who insisted on a complete script rewrite, to leave no traces of Farley’s version of Shrek, according to Myers, he wanted to voice the character for two reasons: I wanted the opportunity to work with Jeffrey Katzenberg and the book is a great story about accepting yourself for who you are
I saw the 'raw' story oard version with some of Farleys lines. And while he was a great actor, I can't imagine Shrek as anyone else besides Meyers. Maybe it's cu I saw hia version before Farleys. But Meyers seems to fit better IMO. But it would be neat to see an alternate reality Shrek where Farley didbt pass and his version was brought up instead. Would it be as popular? Maybe, but for different reasons. But I can't imagine it not being Meyers.
If you know Spanish, that's a great way to rewatch this movie. It's equally and some parts better because they changed a some parts to cater to the Spanish speaking audience. The humor in both languages are amazing 👏
I see people mentioning that the Spanish (latin american) is the best and they change things but one part they change is that in English when Farquaad is interrogating the Gingerbread man he gets "Do you know the muffin man?" but in that Spanish version he gets asked if he knows Pinpon, referring to a nursery rhyme about a toy doll. I also watched Shrek in Spanish class and was the only native Spanish speaker so everyone else was confused why the movie wasn't directly translated to "panadero" (baker) or something similar and even the teacher didn't know of this little rhyme I grew up with :)
Shrek was the second film I ever saw in a theater. I was 7 years old when one of my cousins took me to go see it. A lot of the jokes flew over my head as a kid 😂❤
I remember I started watching this channel around a year ago, and Oak is right, I definitely judged you guys by your appearance at first and I shouldn't have. I don't remember what video it was but it was among recommendations on the right so I clicked on it and didn't really expect anything as I was going through several channels. I saw some tough-looking guys and was just hoping you wouldn't mock whatever movie you were reacting to, but I was really pleasantly surprised by how sensitive you guys were and how you reflected on the lessons in the movie, the goodconstructive comments you had about it, etc. I have watched pretty much ever reaction since, and those that came out before I started watching you too. It's true that we should never judge a book by its cover and I'm so glad I found you guys!
I won tickets to see this when it came out in theaters, and it was so good. It still holds up! Fun fact: when Shrek said the word 'ass', every single kid in the theater gasped and it was hilarious.
I literally can’t wait for shrek 2 it’s literally my favorite out of all of them but this is such a fun introduction to all the characters these movies filed my childhood.
When Donkey asks for Shrek's name at the beginning of the movie he stops to think about it. It was the first time someone asked for his name so he was not sure (at least that's a theory i saw somewhere but i think it fits)
Oak singing is the most wholesome thing I’ve seen yet 😂 Now that the Shrek films are being watched on the channel, y’all should also watch the two Puss In Boots movies, highly recommend!
My teenage cousin brought this to our house for our family's Christmas party to watch after dinner. All of us, my sister and I as kids, Aunts, Uncles, our older cousins, all sat down to watch it together and all of us laughing our heads off, we'd never seen an animated movie like Shrek before! Such a wonderful core memory for me 😊 Can't wait to see you watch the rest of the Shrek series!
I was absolutely shocked that this was a first time (full) watch for Mason and Oak, but absolutely delighted too, it's such a joy to get to experience these movies with you guys! And a movie like Shrek with its awesome messages and delivery, I knew Oak would dive deep into them, which is honestly one of my favorite parts of your reaction videos. I think you all truly embody that message about not judging before you get to know someone: you are funny, insightful, and courageously vunerable at times, and if people judge you based on your looks, they are the ones missing out. I first started watching your channel during your A:TLA reactions, and I was intrigued because it wasn't what I was expecting. I appreciated that Oak and Mason approached the show with open minds, not letting the fact that it was a "kid's show" stop you from giving it a chance. I think it is beautiful what you guys are doing, watching animated (as well as non-animated) movies and shows without judgement, and sharing your genuine enjoyment with these stories. Being strong does not always mean being stoic and hiding your emotions, you all show that in your genuine, honest, heartfelt reactions, and I so admire all of you for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us. Also, I immediately had to give this a thumbs up when Oak started sing along to Hallelujah. Such a beautiful song!! This movie was crafted to be the antithesis to Disney movies, with the obvious parody of fairy tales. The tone of the movie also served as a commentary on Disney movies at the time, with the for-adults-only jokes sprinkled without, being a contrast to the squeacky clean image of Disney. Of course, things have come full circle and now that kind of tone is kind of the norm.
David spade said Chris Farley was only 5 days away from completing voicing this movie. Chris Farleys brother was supposed to help with finishing the lines but was so distraught to do it. So that’s when they moved onto Mike Myers. There is footage of the Chris Farley voiced version. Super interesting!
SHREK IS LOVE SHREK IS LIFE Absolutely timeless classic. The sequels are a must-watch too. Nothing beats the original, but as far as series go, this one is pretty great.
Not forgetting Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow who also kill it in this. Can't wait for Shrek 2, in my opinion, the ending sequence of Shrek 2 is one of the best ending sequences in animated Cinema history.
Shrek wasn’t originally supposed to be Scottish. Mike Myers (voice of Shrek) felt that ogres represented the working people, so Myers first did the recordings in a Canadian accent and giving his own background as a working person, but after considering that all the other fairy tale creatures are Eurocentric he decided to drop the Canadian accent and asked the recording to be redone with a Scottish accent.
I always assumed it was his background as son of a northern English man, which steered him in that direction, since there are similarities in those accents
Thumbs up for the "First time watching" and "Seen it" overlay at the beginning. More reaction channels need this, and having it visual is especially useful.
Never judge people by their looks indeed. Many years ago I was afraid buff men being mean or bullies, but when I start going out for walks they were pretty supportive and wellcoming even when I am a big fat dude. You guys remember me these kind people, you got the superhero heart.
very true, but to be fair farquaad judged him first, he literally tried to kill him when he first saw him, and called shrek hideous. shrek making fun of his height is deserved
You guys are my favorite reactors. This was so hilarious I literally lost it at oak singing hallelujah 😂😂 I had to pause I was laughing so hard. You guys are great
I havent seen anyone mention this yet but DreamWorks was also working on Prince of Egypt at the same time. If they got kicked off the Prince of Egypt they moved to Shrek. They called it "getting Shreked"
So happy to see your channel growing!! It's what you deserve, you guys are all amazing. Fr my dads away from home when I'm on campus at school. Wish you all well always! Sending love from Chicago :)
Oof. I def felt guilty when you discussed being judged as meatheads 😬 I think my initial love for your channel was the surprise that I was so wrong and have loved watching you get so needy about so many of my fav properties.
Fun fact Dreamworks sent animators that didnt live up to expectations working on Prince of Egypt to go work on Shrek as a punishment. Prince of Egypt, while a great movie in its own right, was the story of Moses and didnt draw a big audience so it was considered a flop. So its pretty ironic that Shrek turned into a huge thing when it wasn't something the studio held in high regard.
I absolutely adore Shreks and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. Great reaction. Also I randomly finding myself going “somebody call a doctor because badd medicine is BACK!” 😂
That song was also used in a old movie about a race to money (the actor of Mr bean is also on it) it was a great movie as well and smash mouth shows up on it as well
This was great watching with you. None of you have a problem showing your sensitive side and it is so refreshing. And Oak, I was singing Hallelujah right there with you(my absolute favorite version is done by Pentatonix) It's hard to imagine, but the Shrek sequel is even better! Love you guys💚
A neat story related to Donkey: I went to Ringling for illustration from '03-'07, and at the time they were the top school in the country for computer animation. My roommate was a CA major, so I saw her homework assignments all the time. Back then, you had to create a skeleton by hand in Maya before attaching the animation points to the character model in order to animate it, and the process of creating that skeleton was tedious. The summer before I graduated, one of the rising CA seniors actually programmed a button for Maya that _automatically generated a skeleton._ Once the school year started up again and word got out that this dude was basically a programming sorcerer to do that, he was INUNDATED with job offers. Multiple big animation studios were fighting over him and trying to one-up each other. Then DreamWorks told him "If you come and work for us, you can HAVE Donkey in the next Shrek film!" (Meaning he could be the lead animator for the character.) He went with DreamWorks. lol
Shrek set the bar when it came to sliding winks to the adult audiene. I made friends at the theatre from other parents literature laughing to tears!! We were resigned to another kid movie. Little did we know we would be So Entertained along with our toddlers!! 23 years later, my kids and I still use the lines from Shrek series and so many more to communicate! My grandkids were brought up on The Looney Tunes original series and Dreamworks & Pixar! Also LOTR, Star Tek and Star Wars
I appreciate your guys’ honesty! Most reaction channels will pretend like they’ve never even heard of these blockbuster pop culture mainstays, but y’all not admit who’s seen it, but also that you’ve seen bits and pieces
I must say, there's something... pretty touching about your guys' channel. I am especially heartwarmed by how The Oak is such a big, muscled guy, you could at first glance write him off sort of as a gym obsessed tough guy or something, and here you are, watching family movies and having thoughtful discussion about it. It's neat, and I guess corresponds nicely to this particular movie's message. All the best to you guys.
Mike Myers’s allegedly filmed the whole movie (or most of it) in a normal accent. He hated it and thought something was missing. And then later on asked if he could make shrek Scottish . So they have to re-do ALL his lines in the Scottish accent. And that’s why we have the shrek we have today. Due to Mike Myers’s genius.
I didn’t even know you guys were recommended Shrek. Mann shrek was my favorite movie growing up. It was constantly on replay (both VHS and DVD) in my house. I know all of the movies word for word except the 4th one.

Isn’t Donkey from the fairytale The Musicians of Bremen, where a bunch of talking animals- donkey included- form a band after their owners all try to get rid of them? That’s why the old woman is trying to sell Donkey in the beginning, because that’s how the story starts.
I never realized he was supposed to be from Pinocchio. I always thought he was just like a 'mystical' animal. That's a nice touch
22:56 when Oak did the face perfectly. I’m dead 😂😂😂
Oak looks kinda like Shrek
The word of mouth was STRONG in this one. It was one of the few movies that made MORE its second weekend than the first when it initially released. Such classic hilarity.
Fun Fact: Andrew Adamson - the director of Shrek 1 and 2 - is also the director of Narnia 1 and 2.
Good discography.
That makes a lot of sense. No wonder their sequels are better and if not just as good!
Rest in peace
Chris Farley 1964-1997
Kathleen freeman 1923-2001
William Steig 1907-2003
Roger Ebert 1942-2013
Richard Schickel 1933-2017
and Kelly Asbury 1960-2020, Chris Farley was initially hired to voice Shrek, and he had recorded nearly all of the dialogue for the character, but died before completing the project, according to David Spade on an episode of the podcast Bad Friends, Farley only had 5 days left of voice work and Farley’s brother John was asked if he would come in and finish his lines but John refused, a story reel featuring a sample of Farley’s recorded dialogue was leaked to the public in August 2015, DreamWorks then re cast the voice role to Mike Myers, who insisted on a complete script rewrite, to leave no traces of Farley’s version of Shrek, according to Myers, he wanted to voice the character for two reasons: I wanted the opportunity to work with Jeffrey Katzenberg and the book is a great story about accepting yourself for who you are
Farley's version would have been fantastic!
I wish you put beside them what each did to help others understand them all
I saw the 'raw' story oard version with some of Farleys lines.
Oh you will love this franchise for sure!! Shrek is iconic in so many ways!
Once this movie premiered, a whole new culture was born. 💚
I won tickets to see this when it came out in theaters, and it was so good. It still holds up!
Fun fact: when Shrek said the word 'ass', every single kid in the theater gasped and it was hilarious.
Fun fact : Lord Farquad's design was partially inspired by Prince Humperdink from The Princess Bride.
No. he was just taken aback that someone asked
The line "That'll do donkey. That'll do" after they cross the rope bridge, is from the film 'Babe", where the farmer says"That'll do pig. That'll do"
I knew Oak would crack up as soon as the opening song started playing 😂 classic meme
Oak singing along to Hallelujah is what I live for
Idk why but the part where the dwarves are pushing the case back and forth always made me laugh
Oak singing is the most wholesome thing I’ve seen yet 😂
Now that the Shrek films are being watched on the channel, y’all should also watch the two Puss In Boots movies, highly recommend!
I’m so happy Answer brought up ‘So I Married An Axe Murderer’! Probably my favorite Mike Myers movie, but so underrated!
I say in my head “That’ll do donkey, that’ll do” in his EXACT accent almost every day
Mike myers and Eddie Murphy ate legends in comedy especially Eddie. You all will love part 2!!
Shrek in spanish (Latinoamerican sp.) is the absolute best, most hilarious thing I've ever seen 😂❤
In potuguese (brazil) it's also super super funny
I remember getting this on VHS for my 9th birthday and watching it with no expectations. One of the best gifts ever lol. 💚
Also, absolutely do watch Shrek 2!! It is really good!!
David spade said Chris Farley was only 5 days away from completing voicing this movie. Chris Farleys brother was supposed to help with finishing the lines but was so distraught to do it. So that’s when they moved onto Mike Myers. There is footage of the Chris Farley voiced version. Super interesting!
SHREK IS LOVE
SHREK IS LIFE
Absolutely timeless classic. The sequels are a must-watch too. Nothing beats the original, but as far as series go, this one is pretty great.
I was only 9 years old…..
I loved Shrek so much …..
I had all the merchandise and movies.
Not forgetting Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow who also kill it in this. Can't wait for Shrek 2, in my opinion, the ending sequence of Shrek 2 is one of the best ending sequences in animated Cinema history.
Yeah! I hope we get all the way through these movies and the musical! It's all so great!
And he has Scottish ancestry
Thumbs up for the "First time watching" and "Seen it" overlay at the beginning. More reaction channels need this, and having it visual is especially useful.
Never judge people by their looks indeed.
Many years ago I was afraid buff men being mean or bullies, but when I start going out for walks they were pretty supportive and wellcoming even when I am a big fat dude. You guys remember me these kind people, you got the superhero heart.
I'm guessing more than a couple of those guys were once bigger dudes who, over time, became buff riposaurs.
Skrek's entire plot is about not judging people by their looks while simultaneously ripping into Farquaad for his height.
And for being a fark wad...
It's about not judging someone's character by their looks, they ripped on fuckwad because he was an insecure asshole.
very true, but to be fair farquaad judged him first, he literally tried to kill him when he first saw him, and called shrek hideous. shrek making fun of his height is deserved
I love that they went with the name Farquaad, because if you say it fast enough it sounds like F**kwad.
I read that as F**kward (like effing awkward) 😅
Don’t forget to include I AM LEGEND😉 Will Smith’s Donkey monologue is perfection.
Also you guys should watch the whole series now! They're all pretty good I think, plus the Puss in Boots spinoffs as well
Oof. I def felt guilty when you discussed being judged as meatheads 😬 I think my initial love for your channel was the surprise that I was so wrong and have loved watching you get so needy about so many of my fav properties.
over 2 decades later and this is still the best animated movie on planet Earth
Oak! Mason! First time? For shame! 😂
Glad you're getting caught up.
I absolutely love the series, and hope y'all do too! So much to love 😂😅❤
22:31 The Princess just murdered an entire family of birds. Blew up the parent and cooked the kids lmao
Used to live on a farm, that's basically breakfast and dinner.
I absolutely adore Shreks and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. Great reaction. Also I randomly finding myself going “somebody call a doctor because badd medicine is BACK!” 😂
"All Star" was used most popularly in Shrek but it wasn't specifically made for it, it was made 2 years before Shrek.
That song was also used in a old movie about a race to money (the actor of Mr bean is also on it) it was a great movie as well and smash mouth shows up on it as well
@@dlrab6351 "Rat Race" was an entertaining movie.
the spanish dub of this movie is legendary
I’ve always loved that the villain’s name is literally
*Lord Fuck-Wad* in an exaggerated British accent 😂
This was great watching with you. None of you have a problem showing your sensitive side and it is so refreshing. And Oak, I was singing Hallelujah right there with you(my absolute favorite version is done by Pentatonix) It's hard to imagine, but the Shrek sequel is even better! Love you guys💚
Diamond Dave with the crispy edits, killing it! great video boys. Shrek is a blast to watch!🙂
I had no idea of the level of adult humour in this film, only watched it when I was a kid. So damn good
Love the new "FIRST TIME WATCHING/SEEN IT" signs
Best part is they did this in a way that kids could watch it even though it’s very much intended for an older audience. Same for the others.
I fell out of my seat at the theater I was laughing so hard. My husband had tears streaming down his face from laughing.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A neat story related to Donkey:
I went to Ringling for illustration from '03-'07, and at the time they were the top school in the country for computer animation.
Then DreamWorks told him "If you come and work for us, you can HAVE Donkey in the next Shrek film!" (Meaning he could be the lead animator for the character.)
He went with DreamWorks. lol
Please watch Anastasia! DreamWorks killed it with that movie ❤ it's one of my favorites
the oak singing halleloja was awesome!!
Answer looking disheartened during the entirety of Dragon being trapped in the castle scene made me realize I was making the same face lol
The oak singing hallelujah 😊 was not expecting that 😂.
I appreciate your guys’ honesty! Most reaction channels will pretend like they’ve never even heard of these blockbuster pop culture mainstays, but y’all not admit who’s seen it, but also that you’ve seen bits and pieces
Someone once told me that Farquaad's name is actually a lowkey of getting away with naming him F*ckwad 😂
I find it funny that all of Shrek's lip movements had to be reanimated because Mike Myers thought giving Shrek an accent would be funny
All the best to you guys.
i love watching you guys get mushy when he told her he loved her. so sweet.
Oak putting Shrek's ears on his 5 is so wholesome 😂
