    Badd Medicine here and its Shrek reaction time
    Once upon a time, in a faraway swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek (Mike Myers) whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). Determined to save their home -- not to mention his -- Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to be Farquaad's bride. Rescuing the Princess may be small compared to her deep, dark secret. The film stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow. In the film, an embittered ogre named Shrek (Myers) finds his home in the swamp overrun by fairy tale creatures banished by the obsessive ruler Lord Farquaad (Lithgow). With the help of Donkey (Murphy), Shrek makes a pact with Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona (Diaz) in exchange for regaining control of his swamp

    You know what's really amazing about "Shrek"? The story basically has all the elements of "Dark Romance" of which there are five. (1) The male love interest is the "bad guy" - Shrek is an outcast, not accepted by society, scares off villagers etc. (2) The male protagonist follows his own moral code, which differs from the norm (and would even be considered as criminal or abnormal) and mostly does so in hiding - well, yes, that's what Shrek does in his swamp, from the perspective of the fictional society in the story. (3) The female protagonist is in a position without real power - Fiona is kept in a tower and needs to be rescued. (4) There is an element of taboo - according to Dulocs norms and moral code, a princess and an orge could never be together. (5) The conflict is resolved by one or both protagonists changing fundamentally, and the power imbalance from the beginning has vanished.
    It works so well because from Fionas perspective, only Shrek can truly understand her. From Shreks perspective: Only with Fiona he can truly be himself.

    Something a lot of people don't know is Shrek was originally voiced by Chris Farley but he died close to completion. They had to shelve the movie and ended up completely scrapping the original movie. They put Shrek on the backburner and looked for somebody to replace Chris Farley. Mike Myers came about and they decided he was a good fit but they realized they had to completely reanimate the movie and they decided to completely rewrite the story as well. The Shrek we got has barely any resemblance to the original that was scrapped. Everything from the character design to the story was completely redone. They ended up putting their animators that worked on movies that flopped on Shrek since Dreamworks thought it would be a total flop and they called it getting Shreked. To their surprise Shrek was a huge hit and it became one of the most beloved animated movies of all time. Its ironic because Dreamworks judged their movie before it even had its moment. And Lord Farquaad was actually based on their former boss who fired them from Disney Duloc was meant to be Disney world.

For example, Robert plant (led zeppelin) was always very decisive about when he allowed songs to be used in media and often said no. However he did allow for school of rock to use one of their songs after Jack black made a video trying to convince him.

    Roger Ebert 1942-2013

    and Kelly Asbury 1960-2020, Chris Farley was initially hired to voice Shrek, and he had recorded nearly all of the dialogue for the character, but died before completing the project, according to David Spade on an episode of the podcast Bad Friends, Farley only had 5 days left of voice work and Farley’s brother John was asked if he would come in and finish his lines but John refused, a story reel featuring a sample of Farley’s recorded dialogue was leaked to the public in August 2015, DreamWorks then re cast the voice role to Mike Myers, who insisted on a complete script rewrite, to leave no traces of Farley’s version of Shrek, according to Myers, he wanted to voice the character for two reasons: I wanted the opportunity to work with Jeffrey Katzenberg and the book is a great story about accepting yourself for who you are

    Shrek wasn’t originally supposed to be Scottish. Mike Myers (voice of Shrek) felt that ogres represented the working people, so Myers first did the recordings in a Canadian accent and giving his own background as a working person, but after considering that all the other fairy tale creatures are Eurocentric he decided to drop the Canadian accent and asked the recording to be redone with a Scottish accent.

    I see people mentioning that the Spanish (latin american) is the best and they change things but one part they change is that in English when Farquaad is interrogating the Gingerbread man he gets "Do you know the muffin man?" but in that Spanish version he gets asked if he knows Pinpon, referring to a nursery rhyme about a toy doll.
    I also watched Shrek in Spanish class and was the only native Spanish speaker so everyone else was confused why the movie wasn't directly translated to "panadero" (baker) or something similar and even the teacher didn't know of this little rhyme I grew up with :)

    Fun fact Dreamworks sent animators that didnt live up to expectations working on Prince of Egypt to go work on Shrek as a punishment. Prince of Egypt, while a great movie in its own right, was the story of Moses and didnt draw a big audience so it was considered a flop. A neat story related to Donkey:
    I went to Ringling for illustration from '03-'07, and at the time they were the top school in the country for computer animation. My roommate was a CA major, so I saw her homework assignments all the time.
    Back then, you had to create a skeleton by hand in Maya before attaching the animation points to the character model in order to animate it, and the process of creating that skeleton was tedious.
    The summer before I graduated, one of the rising CA seniors actually programmed a button for Maya that _automatically generated a skeleton._ Once the school year started up again and word got out that this dude was basically a programming sorcerer to do that, he was INUNDATED with job offers. Multiple big animation studios were fighting over him and trying to one-up each other.
    Then DreamWorks told him "If you come and work for us, you can HAVE Donkey in the next Shrek film!" (Meaning he could be the lead animator for the character.)
    He went with DreamWorks. lol

So they have to re-do ALL his lines in the Scottish accent. And that’s why we have the shrek we have today. Due to Mike Myers’s genius.

    I was absolutely shocked that this was a first time (full) watch for Mason and Oak, but absolutely delighted too, it's such a joy to get to experience these movies with you guys! And a movie like Shrek with its awesome messages and delivery, I knew Oak would dive deep into them, which is honestly one of my favorite parts of your reaction videos. I think you all truly embody that message about not judging before you get to know someone: you are funny, insightful, and courageously vunerable at times, and if people judge you based on your looks, they are the ones missing out. I first started watching your channel during your A:TLA reactions, and I was intrigued because it wasn't what I was expecting. I appreciated that Oak and Mason approached the show with open minds, not letting the fact that it was a "kid's show" stop you from giving it a chance. I think it is beautiful what you guys are doing, watching animated (as well as non-animated) movies and shows without judgement, and sharing your genuine enjoyment with these stories. Being strong does not always mean being stoic and hiding your emotions, you all show that in your genuine, honest, heartfelt reactions, and I so admire all of you for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us.
    Also, I immediately had to give this a thumbs up when Oak started sing along to Hallelujah. Such a beautiful song!!
    This movie was crafted to be the antithesis to Disney movies, with the obvious parody of fairy tales. The tone of the movie also served as a commentary on Disney movies at the time, with the for-adults-only jokes sprinkled without, being a contrast to the squeacky clean image of Disney. Of course, things have come full circle and now that kind of tone is kind of the norm.

    Surprised Oak hasn't seen it. Shrek at the time was a big slap in the face of disney, which always had their perfect pretty (and usually white/blond) princesses find a man to fix everything and finding a magical way to look pretty for a guy they just met. It started an avalanche of movies trying to capture the same thing, and many Disney movies after scrambled to make things as progressive, with Frozen being a big change from the usual (and then the big hit it became as well). This movie was also a pioneer in lots of grownup jokes that would go over the kids heads, but make it as a fun for the parents seeing it.

    • @deadahead7996
      @deadahead7996 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What slap in the face? Disney and subsequently Disney princesses are still the head drivers of most cinema and film. They are unmovable characters and storyline that are still most popular today. Take, for example, the constant remakes, centred mainly on the original princesses, Frozen had a romance element in it too, it's popularity based on its musical element rather than quality of storyline in the film, afterwhich you will see other movies such as moana, which wasn't bad just didn't have anything stand out, and the disaster of raya and the last dragon which all strayed away from originality of good villians , in depth main characters, who were both interesting and appealing, likeable princess, likeable prince, outstanding side characters, interesting world design and mainly STORY. The thing about shrek is that it was mocking these fairytale tropes beyond Disney, all fairytales, therefore being a satire movie, which at its core has the main elements of a fundamental fairytale.

    • @Saphthings
      @Saphthings 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@deadahead7996 Umm. No. Shrek is a known satire and jab at Disney because the guy who heads Dreamworks got snubbed and fired by Disney. Google is your friend. There are a multitude of articles about it. And no, Disney ended up buying Shrek for 10 billion dollars... Try not to get your love for something to blind you to it's circumstance.
      They bought Shrek for more than their top 5 movie revenues combined. Actually they bought Shrek for more than Disney had made in animation for the past 10 years combined. That's how big the SLAP on Disney's face was. You are also out of touch with kids if you think they are "unmovable", many don't even know stories like Snow White, where a woman is unconscious and kissed by a stranger... or Sleeping beauty... where a woman is unconscious and kissed again... or Beauty & The Beast, where a woman is kidnapped and falls in love with her kidnapper Stockholm style... or... yeah no. Many of those stories aren't even told to kids these days cuz they didn't age well. You can look up several articles as to why they're obscure to children these days + toys/merch from things like tangled, shrek, frozen (where they mock falling in love at first sight and a guy's kiss saving the day) sell way more.
      For context:
      1 'Frozen II' (2019) Box Office: $1.45 billion.
      2 'Frozen' (2013) Box Office: $1.28 billion.
      3 'Incredibles 2' (2018) Box Office: $1.24 billion.
      Here are some articles:
      "You either die Shrek or live long enough to see yourself become Lord Farquaad
      DreamWorks’ fairy tale satire disrupted Disney"
      "Jeffrey Katzenberg, was the head of Walt Disney Studios that started the Disney Renaissance. It is rumored that Walt Disney Company CEO, Michael Eisner, reneged on a verbally promised promotion of Katzenberg, which led to the latter's resignation.
      Katzenberg the founded DreamWorks and produced animated movies to directly rival Disney. Aside from Eisner's similarity to Lord Farquaad, there are many other jabs against the Walt Disney Company (e.g. enslavement of fairy tale characters, Duloc introduction song, Princess Fiona's depiction as an anti-Disney princess). It is obvious that Katzenberg vented a lot of his anger at his previous employer through Shrek."
      "Shrek' was widely considered to be a parody/satire of the Disney Corporation"
