She was absolutely amazing here! The ONLY way anyone could see the "twist" coming was merely because of actress "name recognition". ("No one is going to get an actress of her caliber just for some generic role.") I wasn't really "familiar" with her the first time I saw this episode (though she still "stood out", wink-wink, nudge-nudge) so I was completely caught off guard by her "con-artist" reveal. It was just THAT well preformed. Also, Inara's facial acting in that last scene is God-tier! (and never fails to make me laugh)
A very 'special' episode 😉 My introduction to the gorgeous Christina Hendricks 😍 Shepherd Book's little lecture about the special hell is so funny, as is Mal's response. RIP to Ron Glass. A really talented man.
I loved this episode so much, I named MY rifle Vera. My rifle bag has an Independents flag patch, a patch with2 of Mal's pistols crossed, that says, "Shiny! Let's be bad guys!", and a patch showing Jayne's rifle, that says "It's my favorite gun. I call it Vera."
Mal is a bit of a dope sometimes. So, IMO he really doesn't know Inara kissed him. Btw, you asked _why Inara would even kiss Mal in that situation._ I think you may have missed it, but Inara asked Safron _"Who are you?"_ And Safron answers, _"Malcolm Reynolds' Widow."_ So, when Inara finally got to him she was afraid he was dead.
"I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you" my favorite line from this show (and there are lots of great lines)! This is one of my favorite reactions! You both had so much fun watching it and Toy was figuring everything out ahead of time! I especially love that they put Vera in a spacesuit so Jayne could fire it (so it would have oxygen to fire while in space)!
Sorry ladies, but Mal absolutely does not know. In fact, his thinking that Inara kissed her makes him feel very good about himself, so he won't ever think any deeper into it.
Actually, its entirely possible that it occurred to him, but he doesn't want to face that, worried about being vulnerable, attached, losing someone etc, so rather than admitting to it, he pretends he missed the whole thing.
@ScarriorIII Occham's Razor. The simplest explanation is usually the best. Mal was feeling sore about being the butt of everybody's joke for most of the episode. Especially from Book. Mal's pride was hurting because he considers himself to be a good judge of character, but he was deceived and drugged by someone that he trusted, and Wash was attacked, so if Inara was seduced by YoSaphBridge, then he probably feels like he lost against someone who successfully managed to pull one over on everybody else too, and there's no shame in that. And that is probably about as deep as his emotions will travel before he starts feeling slightly vindicated and pleased with the mental image of the two of them making out. He'll have no interest or curiosity in examining any further because his own explanation of what happened is much more satisfying to both his ego and his imagination.
One of the best episodes for fun, confusion, and surprises. Toy nailed it when she called Saffron a succubus. On the money. And Toy, you must have enjoyed the episode because your hands were fidgeting 90 miles and hour. There is something to be learned from Jayne here...don't kiss 'em on the lips. Great reaction and waiting for the next episode. Zhù nǐ yǒu měihǎo de yītiān!
"he got it straight from the tap." that's really not how that works. saffron used it once, so there was less on her lips for the second one. the conclusion mal comes to here is entirely plausible, if you think (as mal does) that it's more likely for inara to be fooled than for inara to fall for someone like mal.
Toy's the first reactor I've seen to get the ceremony result before the reveal and she was sooooo excited to have predicted it - priceless! I'm with Hannah on whether Mal knows though - I think Mal is in deep denial of his feelings and hers as well, due to his obvious dislike of her work.
@@bigdream_dreambig There is quite a bit of ancient marriage tradition within this episode. For example, as a token of submission and love for her husband, a wife would wash his feet. It was taken from the bible because Jesus washed the feet of his apostles before they sat at his dinner table as a show of love for them. His life was lived for them and for the rest of humanity and that form of humility is a show of love. My family is pretty hardcore Christian and I've seen the foot washing ceremony personally.
My faith in the preacher as an intelligent being was severely harmed when HE was the one to point out Mal was basically tricked into it , then proceeded to chastise him for it. make up your mind, bro.

To me this is the funniest episode. I won't say favorite as different episodes are different sorts of favorite, but I love this one. The Chinese is about getting around Fox's swear filters.
This episode proves there are two kinds of people in this world: those that fall for Saffron's game, and those that do not!!! Which btw, since you know Weadon writes twists, it was good to look for clues.
2:41 frankly, even 20 years ago, we knew China was going to be the next superpower, so it would make sense for Whedon to show a blending of Chinese and western culture. The use of Chinese gave the show a chance to swear without censorship (especially since the actors’ pronunciations were so bad). 29:57 I don’t think you can appreciate just how stupid we (men) are when it comes to women. Mal believes Saffron kissed Inara, I’m convinced.
Wash is a perfect gentleman. Notice his constantely backing up. Getting as far away from her as possible? He did everything but hit on the head with a frying pan! But he was clearly trying to leave!!!
Great reaction. I look forward to the next one. Your cat is a blue russian like my cat. I adopted her from a cat shelter when I was helping them by taking pictures of cats so they could be adopted. I'm living my with brother now. She likes my brother more. I guess it's because he's clean shaven like me when I adopted her. Now I have a small moustache and goatee. I usually stay upstairs so she comes looking for him. I let her into my room and sleeps on my legs. She runs downstairs as soon as she hears my brother. I feed her and open the back door. She likes climbing on the roof of our garage and sits all day. Oh well, I still like her and she can be affectionate except sleeping on my legs at night.

Yes it did!... she knew that the doctor's diagnosis would reveal that she suffered from the same toxin, on her lips, and then it would be obvious to everyone that (the only way it got on her lips) was that she must have kissed Mal while he was out and she did not want her feelings for him known.
Inara was drugged & panicky. Simon would've been looking for a head injury & possible concussion. He would've noted no lesions, bruising, or sign of concussion (at least not a severe one, she was obviously a little dazed) & left it at that. Which could simply mean that she didn't hit her head that hard. There would've been no reason to test her lips or do any further examination. At most he might have checked for any other fractures or signs of internal bleeding, but given that the fall wouldn't have likely caused such injuries (not enough force) unless she hit something on the way down it's unlikely he would've seen the need. Especially since she would've told him if she'd hit anything other than the floor. If Inara did notice any medical issues from the fall later on they could easily be dealt with then. Even if he had considered the possibility of Inara being drugged & how it happened he'd be bound by doctor/patient confidentiality. He'd also have no way of knowing for sure unless she told him or performed completely unnecessary tests (given how seriously he takes his doctor's oath & that she would've objected, it's highly unlikely).
