This show is so good.
"He reminds me of Crowley." He is.
Never mentioned in the show, but part of official cannon, they speak Chinese because before people left earth, the US and China merged. But really, it was to allow cursing on network TV. And the writers chose to make them say some really bizarre things in Chinese.
Though this is 700 years and millions of miles in the future, The Beatles are still popular. "Cry, baby, cry. Make your mother sigh," is the chorus to Cry Baby Cry off The White Album from 1968, which is already 55 years old. The 2018 50th anniversary remaster hit #6 on the charts.
Joss must have shown Alan what he wanted in the dinosaur scene as Wash sounded exactly like Joss during that.
RIP Ron Glass, a truly good guy. When he found out Buffy/Angel/Firefly fans were raising money for his charity, he made sure to attend their fan party back in 2004.
A Crazy Ivan is explained in the fantastic film, The Hunt for Red October. Russian submarine captains would periodically make sudden 360° turns as the one place their sonar didn't work was directly behind the sub. Another sub could sneak up behind them undetected. The sudden unexpected turns would expose an enemy sub. Ivan is a Russian name (John in English).
I'm sure all of this was answered, but I have no time to scroll.
I like your thumbnail pic. After re-watching this series I came to the conclusion that this is really Mal and Zoe's story, the story of the war buddies. Gina Torres doesn't get enough credit for her superior acting ability but it is on display in every scene she shares with Mal. Often she is in the background and often she doesn't say a word. But she is always there, protecting Mal's back, even from other members of the crew. And I've come to the conclusion that their relationship and how Gina conveys her character is a big reason this series works so well for me. Zoe and Mal are not lovers. They are not simply friends. They are the war buddies. They are the ones who survived when so many other did not. And they survived because they had each others backs. Zoe doesn't just save Mal's life many times but she has his back such that he is able to focus on what is in front of him in order to make his plans succeed. And more often than not they succeed only because Zoe is there to protect his back. There is also a theme of Zoe being an avatar for Serenity or perhaps the other way around. But we can discuss that when those episodes occur. In the mean time, enjoy one of my favorite series of all time.
Space Cowboys?
You should watch the classic anime *Cowboy Bebop* (1998). Cowboy Bebop is a Japanese animated television series that centers around a group of bounty hunters in a futuristic, space-western setting.
6:20 "He reminds me of Crowley, I think, from Supernatural." And he definitely should. It's the exact same actor! 😆
Ill be honest i yelled at my phone.
First reactor ive watched mentioning mark sheppard and still doesnt get his recognition. I really wish we would have gotten more seasons it would have been nice seeing badger and many others more
Mark Sheppard, who plays Badger, is in fact also the actor who plays Crowley in Supernatural.
Twenty years later, I still love this show, and love watching people discover it. Every time I see someone reacting to the show, I feel like I'm experiencing it for the first time, all over again.
Best. Show. Ever. It's not even a full season. The cast found out after 11 or 12 episodes that the show was cancelled. That's why they made the movie, to try and tie up loose ends.
Not so sure. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is, I'd say, awesomer.
@@migmit Fair to say. I was never a big Buffy fan, but I respect the opinions of those who are. More than anything, Nathan Fillion sold me on Firefly. I love him as a person and an actor.
@@karlbecker8775He is in Buffy too, BTW.
It's so funny watching her confused by these characters knowing she'll be like everyone else and love every single one of them by the end
it is inevitable! :P
By the end? Everyone's moment of loving these characters definitely comes in the middle. :p
@@sandwiched And you know, my days of not taking you seriously are definitely coming to a middle... ;)
Jewel Staite, (Kaylee the mechanic), actually HATES strawberries.
16:30 “Kaylee’s dead.” In addition to the other thing, Mal is testing Simon’s character. If he were lying and only out for himself, Simon on hearing that Kaylee had died, would have grabbed his sister and stolen the other shuttle. Instead, he rushed to the infirmary to see if there were anything he could do to rescue Kaylee and stop her dying. Simon’s character is revealed in his immediate course of action.
"Kaylee's dead" is also a good example of the sort of rough gallows humor that can be found in military units.
and a lesson to simon... i bet he never felt how devastating his choice of actions can be for others...
i bet simon was feeling like falling directly into space into nothingness....
his face showed, that it shattered him to hear that the most nice and likeble person he propably has met for a long time would have beenthe casuality of something that he brought upon her... even if he never intended to,
but he only thought about his sister and a little of himself, until Mal shattered his sight on everything with that one short comment...
and it showed a lot about Mal too...
harm his crew, bring danger on them, and he´ll teach you... gladly simon is a willing learner...
i love the fact, that even jayne was waiting outside the med-bay concerned about kaylee...
somehow, i see jayne in the role of her bigger bully brother, he loves to annoy her and get on her nerves... but god help the one, that would harm her....
6:25 yes he IS Crowley from Supernatural... so few reactors mention that
I’m sooooooo excited for you to start this journey! Firefly is an amazing ride! So happy you get to experience this!
"He reminds me of Crowley from Supernatural." He is Crowley.
I might have yelled a little when this popped up. I think Firefly might have the most endearing set of characters ever put on television. You're in for a memorable journey.
🎵 You can't take the sky from me! 🎵
They are not space cowboys, just cowboys in space. There's a difference!
And lo, another Browncoat was created. Hope you're buckled in, because it's going to be one wild ride! There's all sorts of twists and cul-de-sacs.
Don't worry, we'll make you a browncoat soon enough.
Jayne's hilarious. He plays pretty much the same character in the series, Chuck.
Mark Sheppard is the person who played crowley and in supernatural and he seems familiar because it is the same actor.
LOL EMME! @ 2:47 So he wasn't pretty enough, and he died lol, that's wild. Great Reaction 😊can't wait for you to watch the rest of the series.
In the Firefly universe, cultural blending creates the multilingual conversation. In reality, by swearing in Chinese, the show was able to work around censorship. They had a young woman whose job was literally to work on translating cuss words and phrases.
"there's only one season."
there's half a season and a movie, for a story that was supposed to go for seven seasons.
Beginning of the episdoe, "I don't know how I feel about any of these people." - End of the episode, Mal shoots a federal agent in the head, "He did what he had to..." I think you're going to like this show.
Firefly pulls heavily from post American Civil War (1861 to 1865) America, Joss Whedon even explained that the novel "The Killer Angels" set during three days of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War was a big inspiration for Firefly. It's a western in space, similar to The Mandalorian, at least Season 1 of The Mandalorian.
There's also elements from World War 2 as well such as 1:41 with enemy aircrafts doing runs on soldiers with automatic weapons to 1:49 with the M1 inspired helmets used during WW2, Korean War, and the Vietnam War etc. But there's still alot of elements from the American Civil War as well in terms of the outfits worn by the soldiers and other characters, hybrid of American Civil War to WW2.
2:12 Finally we have an Anti Aircraft gun that looks like it was pulled from Starship Troopers (1997) and I wouldn't be surprised as alot of TV shows used assets from that film, Firefly even uses the armour worn by the Starship Troopers in a later episode as well.
Something else that's really cool is the UI display on the Anti Aircraft gun features the Insignia for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. This is a corporation featured in the Alien films, does that mean that Firefly and Alien are set in the same universe? Well Ridley Scott is the creator of Alien so it's really up to him but for fans of both Alien and Firefly as both the film and show are so loosely connected, Firefly is also set like 400 years after the first Alien film I don't see why fans can't just pretend there connected for the sake of fun.
I personally like the idea that Firefly and Alien both have very analog, retro tech yet there set in the future. Humanity spreading so far out that these frontier planets start to lack behind in technological advancements compared to Earth so they start using modified older tech, weapons, and vehicles. Now we have a frontier of planets in the 26th century that reflect the Wild West on Earth.
Firefly takes place in a 5 star system. Mal kissed his cross in the beginning but he lost faith. It's worth downloading a map of the systems, it won't be a spoiler.
They speak Chinese because they are apparently the top economy. 😊
Welcome to your newest favorite TV show!
You can always tell if someone has seen The Hunt for Red October by their reaction to Firefly ep 1.
Conn Sonar. Crazy Ivan.
6:20 that is indeed Crowley from Supernatural.
New subscriber here.
Every browncoat will have a favorite.
I like how you see Jayne. Can’t wait to see you love and hate Jayne more and more as the episodes roll.
Can’t stop the signal.
Yep! That is Crowley.
It's a little early for Christmas🎄, but I'm opening this present early. BTW, you're gonna love the characters in this show.🎉❤️🔥🇨🇦
Great show!
From where I sit I see a Jayne hat (you’ll know it when you see it) a River model & a 27x40 poster for the movie. Ya, I might like it a bit. 😉
You have picked a real gem of a story here. It goes in this order:
1) 14 episodes (seasons were normally 22-23 episodes long back then, often with a double length pilot - this series was canceled early due to executive politics at FOX)
2) Movie teaser "The River Tam Sessions"
3) Serenity movie will finish the main story (yes, it has the same name as the pilot episode you just watched)
4) Comics, Novels, and Role Playing Games for more Official Lore.
Everything shown has a well written, nuanced reason behind it. Even the minor characters & scenes have depth.
When Mal told Simon "Kaylee is dead" he was testing him. Simon's concerned response is why Mal offered him a position on his crew at the end.
People are used to eating synthesized food so it's a big deal when a real strawberry shows up.
Drinking water would be limited on a ship. Using very little to rinse your hands and face would be necessary. Chances are that isn't drinking water but more of a sanitizer/cleaner that Mal used sparingly on his hands and face during his bathroom break.
I enjoyed the reaction. I love this show even that it got cancelled midseason.
Josh stated that this was a show of 9 people looking out to space and seeing 9 different things.
The cultures blended and that is why people were using English and Chinese. The Chinese also allowed the characters to swear without being edited.
If Emme says Space Cowboy one more time she’ll have to watch Cowboy Bepop. I have spoken.
So in case no one else dropped a few hints for you, here's a few points you should know; when humanity left earth, the two remaining super powers joined together making one government, the two powers were China and the US, that's why everyone speaks a mix of english and chinese phrases. Mal and Zoe fought in the civil war between the independents and the Alliance, unfortunately the Alliance won. yes, that was Crawley from supernatural.
There's a very good reason Badger reminds you of Crowley.
I haven't even watched this reaction yet, nor do I have time to. I'm here to save this video for later and simply say I'm so excited that this is a journey you're about to take and I'm in for this ride with you as soon as I can watch this.
There's a very good reason that Badger reminded Emme of Crowley from Supernatural, LOL! XD
Around 20 minutes, you said, " There's a lot going on." This was the pilot. Fox rejected it because, "there wasn't enough action in it.", but commissioned a Second pilot. They told Joss on a Friday evening, and he was supposed to start shooting on Monday. Joss and his associate, Tim Minear, wrote the 2nd episode, "The Train Job" over the weekend.
Joss Whedon was the mind that lauched "Buffy the Vamprie Slayer" and "Angel", both of which were excellent TV series that featured a lot of continuing characters, all of whom had come to know each other well and had fabulous, smart, and witty repartee' pretty much all of the time. So, he have a crew aboard "Firefly", all of whom know each other well and, as a result, we as viewers are once again blessed with wildly entertaining dialog to enjoy. Whedon was selected to direct "Avengers" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" so that he could bring his unique talent for dialong among an ensemble of actors to those projects.
All of the crew of Firefly are easy to love, and you will quickly fall under their spell. The stories being told each episode are also really good. Whedon supposedly had outlined about six seasons' worth of episodes, but a new CEO took the reins at Fox Network, and he did not like sci-fi in the least, and couldn't get rid of the show fast enough. It deserved much, much better, based upon the wildly entertaining Season 1. There was enough of a fan base to support the production of a movie to finish telling the story that began with this episode. I'd tell you to be sure and watch that movie, but by the time you get to the end of Season 1, wild horses couldn't keep you from watching it.
OK first you start doing Gravity Falls, and now you start doing Firefly? Who gave you my "Best TV Shows Ever" list?!? Also when you say "He reminds me of Crowley from Supernatural" that's probably because he *is* Crowley from Supernatural. Maybe your face blindness is improving?
Lol, it could just be the voice as well..
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 actually that's a good point, he's got a very distinctive voice.
The characters are already sneaking under your skin, by the end of the series they will be as familier to you as family, and you will wish they had made many more series.
Welcome to the browncoats 😁
This is my favorite series. I'm so glad we get to watch it through your eyes.
3:24 Oh, and they are speaking Chinese for two reasons: [the backstory reason] Chinese and American become the main languages of the galaxy; [the REAL reason] at the time the Censors didn’t speak Chinese at the time, so all swearing was done in Chinese.
"Chinese and American become the main languages of the galaxy"
You mean Chinese and English.
Wow, what timing. I followed your channel yesterday, and today you uploaded the first episode of my favourite series.
3:30 Yup, that would be an inhabitant of the German city of Dortmund. Extremely random name...
21:00 a Crazy Ivan is a technique used by Soviet submarines (thus the Ivan) to suddenly do a 180 and check if someone is following in their dead spot. At least in pop culture.
Welcome to our noble Browncoat ranks!
Reminds you of Crowley because that is the actor who played him. Loved him in every role I've seen him in.
@rickking228
He was in Dollhouse?
@rickking228
Huh... don't remember him at all in it. May have to give it another rewatch...
Ohhh nooo.... hehe
I am SO excited for you to be starting this show! I feel like you are going to fall in love with these characters. Welcome to the Browncoats 🤎
(staggers closer with an Emme-sized brown coat) One of us, one of us, one of us.....
You are going to fall in love this show, and that's not a prediction just a statement of fact before the event.
"Dortmunder" is indeed German. "Dortmund" is a city near where I live. And "Dortmunder" would be someone or something coming from that city.
So glad you're starting this series, one of the best of all time and a great one to see someone react to for the first time.
That _is_ Crowley!
They don't mention it in the series, so it's not a spoiler to explain why they speak Chinese sometimes. In the future world of Firefly, at some point the two biggest world's cultures were the US and China, so as humanity spread out into space, both of those cultures merged. (The real-world reason, though, was so they could curse without getting censored, by using speculative Chinese curse words instead 😅.)
Also, Badger reminds you of Crowley because they're both played by Mark Sheppard 😂
A big one. You're on a great journey. You're gonna laugh a lot. You're gonna cry a lot.
OHMYGOD, OHMYGOD, OHMYGOD!! The cutest, sweetest young lady on TH-cam is FINALLY watching my (hands down!) favorite sci-fi tv show EVER! Emme, seriously, thank you for this. I truly enjoy your commentaries and have been a subscriber for about two months now. I had recently lost my job due to a sore shoulder that refused to heal. I’m 51 and can no longer heal the way I did when I was 26. (Don’t worry. I have other mail sorter positions lined up with the same company). But still things haven’t been great and then BAM! You put this little gem out there! Ma’am, I say this with all sincerity: YOU F***ING ROCK! Oh, and by the way; your lisp is just the very definition of adorable!
I’m so thrilled that you’re starting this journey!! I always watch FF reactions simply because I will never get tired of it.
“I aim to misbehave”
OK, Another Firefly reactor. I am a big, big Firefly fan and I consider myself a true Browncoat. If nobody has told you about browncoats you will learn soon. I subscribed so i will join you on this short but very entertaining journey. This was the first episode filmed and Nathan Fillion (Mal) was not happy with the way his character was written. He talked with Joss Whedon, the creator, who agredd and they made Mal a tough softer with a bit more humor which you should notice in episode 2. There is more to say about the Alliance and hopefully some other comments will fill you in. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
Crazy Ivan is a term from Cold War submarine warfare. “Ivan” is slang for the Russians. American submarines would track Soviet submarines by sneaking in behind them, but they couldn’t get too close, because submarine sensors are blind and deaf to their rears, due to interference from the drive systems.
So periodically submarine commanders would turn their forward sensors on what was behind them by making unannounced hard turns right or left to circle around and “look” behind themselves. Anyone hiding behind them would be instantly revealed.
Since these maneuvers were impossible to predict in advance, the effect was the same as though the Soviet commander had just suddenly decided at the drop of a hat to make the maneuver, because he was a “crazy” Ivan.
Welcome to the world of "Fire-Fly". When this first aired new on network TV, I watched it each week and loved it. This short one season series is a true gem. Also, if as you said, you enjoy both space and cowboys this series is for you (smile...smile).
Welcome to the Browncoats! Firefly is one of my favourite shows of all time, and I am sure you will love it too. Fun fact: Alan Tudyk who plays Wash also played K2SO in Rogue One.
This will probably be the gateway to start Buffy The Vampire Slayer imo
he reminds you of Crowley because that's who he is.
The characters on board Serenity all fit squarely in the "Neutral" alignment, from Neutral Good to Neutral Evil. The most interesting things they do is shift out of their alignments for a moment... and that's where the storytelling happens.
Welcome to the Browncoats
18:13 “He was just trying to help you!” People always forget that the only reason Dobson was able to be locked up in the first place was because he was subdued-by Book punching him, twice. Some men might hold a grudge over something like that.
I watched Firefly, on broadcast in Autumn 2002. I knew Joss W’s “Buffy” and “Angel” series since 1997.
Firefly was messed with by Fox Tv by being shown out of sequence. It was often delayed by Baseball games. I was in my education Grad’ school, had some evening class, and would program my VHS for “Firefly” -get home, and have baseball. Three of the episodes were not broadcast, out on DVD. This first episode was not shown first, it was shown at end near Xmas!
The DVD came out, in 2003, all episisodes. Fans United. Movie made in 2005.
Shiny! 🌎
First Gravity Falls, now *the best show in the 'Verse?*
Girl, you're on a roll!
Welcome to our proud Browncoat ranks! 🤎
You're really going to love this season/movie and the Crew ❤️
Welcome to the ‘Verse! Chinese is used because the future is assumed that the two great superpowers merged: America in China. So, even the Layman speak Chinese. See you in the world! :-)
Thanks for a wonderful reaction to the first episode.
I know you’ve seen more episodes than this in real time, but just to clarify: Mal(colm) Reynolds *was* religious at the beginning, but when his unit was left & the Alliance won that battle (& the war), he lost his religion. That explains his intolerance of faith.
Again, thank you for your work to bring us this. Enjoy!
Emme the old soul. Far too young to be knowing about bees in bonnets.
My prediction: Kylie is going to be your ultimate favorite.
Shiney.
Another one who reacts to Firefly. Shiny!
There was a little nod to this episode in The Mandalorian, when Bo Katan pulls a “Crazy Ivan” in her ship to suddenly reverse direction.
Welcome to a great ride of a series that is worth every minute spent watching it.
Still one of my favorites and one of the greatest tragedies in television history of corporate mismanagement.
Soak it all in and enjoy the brilliant writing, acting and heart in this show.
I'll be watching with you!
This is my fave series that never got its time. The show was canceled prematurely due to inaccurate tracking because of DVR. The series DVD sold very well once it went on sale but they had canceled prematurely and didn't get it back on. That's very much Crowley from Supernatural by the way.
Great reaction! Looking forward to the next one!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Browncoat for life.
Don't go down this road beautiful it only leads to heartache 😢
Yay! I'm glad you started Firefly! I think you will really enjoy it and grow to love ALL characters, yes, even Jane. He is kind of an anti-hero, an antagonist, but he's really good to have around to complete the others. 🙂 I have subscribed.
I think you will begin to love this series. The stories are cool and the characters are interesting. So, watch the whole series then watch the movie. Each episode will give you more insight into each character and you will love Kaley. The reason they speak some Chinese is that when the world became over populated English and Chinese became the dominate spoken languages. So when most left for this new planetary system everyone spoke a combination. But in the series it is how they got to use swear words and get by the censorship because it was in Chinese.
chinese was a way to include expletives and foul language without triggering censorship.
Yet there's no one on the show that's actually Chinese...🙄
This is a PERFECT follow up after being done with Loki. Very excited for this series. Stay amazing.
To learn what a Crazy Ivan is, you should watch Red October.
Great reaction to my favorite show! Can't wait to see the rest
So excited to see you on this amazing journey. Firefly is my favorite TV series ever. Mal and Kaylee are my favorite characters from this series. Cannot wait to see you react to the rest of this series and the movie, Serenity. There are also an entire series of graphic novels and regular novels as well.
A (genuine, fresh, real) strawberry is such a valuable treasure, the growers can afford to package them individually in custom gift boxes. Keep that in mind. GOOD FOOD is that valuable...
Not a spoiler, I promise:
The backstory had the USA and China as the dominant superpowers when people migrated from Earth, so those are the two dominant languages used, and it appears everyone knows the things said in both languages. The real reason for this is so the characters could curse a lot without worrying about the censors. But also, a lot of other Mandarin expressions were used - for instance Mal might call Kaylee "mei mei" which is "little sister", and "dong ma?" means "do you understand?" There are web sites devoted to telling us what the phrases they used mean in English.
Also, I'd take it as a kindness if you didn't do like so many others and say Firefly was only one season long. It was only half a season.
Thanks.
Not just the language, but much of the culture as well. The society demonstrates a fusion of both eastern & western traditions.
The ironic part about that season is that, by todays standards, this was almost two seasons.
Shiny.
For the why they speak Chinese question, I think the backstory is that by the time humanity abandoned Earth, China and the US were the only superpowers left with the means to do so, so everyone who made it off was with one or the other.
For a non-plot reason, it was so they could have fun putting some very silly Chinese curse words in there without upsetting the censors (I think translations of what they say are available, they're pretty odd).
Jayne is gonna aggravate you, entertain you, make you mad, and even make you hate & despise him. In the end everyone warms up to him and begins to like him even though they don't want to. I think he has more character development throughout the series than anyone else.
The most realistic depiction of duck hunting is actually the NES game "Duck Hunt." You sit on shore or maybe in a small boat (if you don't have a dog) and shoot ducks as they come in to land on the water you put decoys on (ducks want to land near other ducks so you have fake ducks in the water). Then you tell your dog to go get the duck you just shot. Between ducks you pray the game warden doesn't come around and if you see him you tie weights to all the extra ducks you shot that put you over the limit to sink them.
so excited! Glad you're reacting to this!
Gotta be part of the crowd of Browncoats that profess their love for this show 🙌🏾
Such a fantastic episode. Love the introduction of the Reapers. "And if we're really lucky, they'll do it in that order." What an introduction.
IMO, Jayne is the most interesting character of the series. Even though the series was cut prematurely, he gets some nice character building in many of the 14 episodes we got. Your disbelief of his statement that he was in it for the money was very astute, as evidenced by the scene where he is crouched outside the window and biting his nail while looking in at Kaylee as she's being operated on. He obviously considers them family. They play him off as the stereotype but give so much nuance that's there to find if you just peel back the layers. While all of the characters were fantastic, his, I believe, was the most brilliantly crafted of them all.
Was my favorite character. Jayne is unflinchingly honest in his dishonesty.
Unfortunately, it’s not even one season. It was cancelled halfway through the first season😞
Now this was an unexpected surprise. It's a shiny - sadly single season, series. :)
