Geek note: when you start talking about raising his strength, you show the clip of the trucker trying to lift the hammer. The trucker is J. Michael straczynski. He was writing the comic at the time of release first Thor movie. Following that was the clip of Seinfeld with Patrick Warburton who played an agent of shield around the same time. They are both from my home town of Paterson, New Jersey (same as Wonderman and Deathlok).
The only difference is I may have taken Cleric sooner, the first few levels of multi class is a little rough but other wise this is how I build Thor, Eldridge knight and storm cleric. Thanks for the video
I liked it. I think you are right about avoiding storm sorcerer. You won't be able to get the flight speed at lvl 18 because you need the fighter levels. As for lower, legal ways to replicate Mjolnir, there is the 1st lvl catapult spell. Upcast it to "throw" a warhammer and bonus action to retrieve it with weapon bond. I don't know how much damage a warhammer can structurally handle, but if you have the mending spell, you could patch the holes until you get a magical throwing hammer. You won't be able to do this often because of spell slots, but at the start of a combat, it really creates a sense of shock and awe. The other I was thinking was an artificer build for returning weapon and enlarge/reduce. Then you could cast enlarge on your throwing hammer and give it at least a +1d4 for a 2d4+Str damage. And that would work for melee attacks as well. Basically, a one handed greatclub. Not ideal, but doable. (I still like the catapult version myself) According to the PHB, war hammers weigh 2 pounds. Which means it can be "thrown" using catapult. The key to making this work is getting the best quality materials and the mending spell to fix any cracks. Otherwise, Mjolnir will crack before you're ready to replace it.
Am playing a goliath monk in a campaign where the DM gave me Stormgirdle, legendary item from the wildmount books. Immediately switched where i wanted to take him to be more like thor. Took 3 levels in battlemaster after 6 in mercy monk, then have been going tempest cleric the rest of the way. So far has been the single coolest character ive been playing
A couple things I did different was taking Tavern Brawler and Metamagic Adept. Tavern Brawler lets you throw your warhammer for the d4 damage and 20/40 range while keeping your PB on attacks, as well as gives a bonus action grapple when you throw it or make a melee attack. Metamagic Adept allows you to turn the cold damage on Spirit Shroud into lightning. True that's it's concentration vs the Dragon Gift feat, but at the EK 14/ Storm Cleric 6 you can cast it twice per day at 5th level for 2d8 lightning on attacks.
Thor was the first hero I made when I began playing twenty some odd years ago with 3rd edition. I still enjoy watching various builds for him. I think I'd do a lot of what you did in 5e, though I'd ask the DM if I could base the Eldritch Knight abilities on Cha over Int. If not, Thor is 1500 years old and reasonably smart so I'd roll with it. Dwarven Thrower reflavored in who can wield it (Aasimar!) If I get that Cha magic boost to EK may also try to get Magic Initiate to get Eldritch Blast, reflavored to look like Lightning. Fun video.
Hey Cmcc! I know it has been over a year since you posted this video. However, I have a question. You said if you were going to play a pure power build, you would play an air genasi and going a different starting subclass. What would that subclass be? Also, what feats would you take instead of boosting strength?
Still haven’t finished the show. But def won’t make a SG character. The queue is way too long for me to start looking to characters with no real “powers”. Never say never though.
It's definitely the anglicized pronunciation :) "Nidavellir" is also shockingly different from the original pronunciation. I also wanted to include the "mew mew" kat dennings clip from thor 1, but I couldn't fit it into the video, sadly. And now I regret that decision.
Nice build! Checked it out since I've got my own build video coming up that leans on the Thor archetype. Pleased to say I go in very different direction 🥳
@@cmccbuilds8229 he had an Artificer put the returning weapon infusion on it So we didn't have to worry about that. But I would have done that if that is what they wanted
Nice build. It will be interesting to see how much od the path of giant barbarian makes it into the game, as mechanically the unearthed arcana seems to check off a number of boxes.
I think I would have subclassed into Artificer to get the "returning weapon" infusion, possibly even the "Ruby of the War Mage" to allow spell casting without materials. Also, get the Crusher feat to push enemies around when you hit them.
I’ve seen that a few times in the comments. It isn’t apparent to me that Artificer offers anything more than EK. Especially when you need those fighter levels. It can certainly work though.
@@cmccbuilds8229 specifically the Storm Herald (sea) ability Storm Aura which lashes out lightning damage to a creature within your 10ft aura. There is also Storm Soul which gives lightning resistance (plus swim speed and underwater breathing). Raging Storm can also knock an enemy prone. That would take a heavy dip into barbarian to dole out decent damage, but that's also a lot of HP and rage bonuses.
Not a fit for this particular build, but if you were doing similar one, wouldn't a thrown weapon without the "thrown" property just count as improvised weapon? So you could get the tavern brawler feat for both making the character better at unarmed and allowing him to add prof to the thrown attack as well?
I don't think the Axe of Dwarvish Lords turning you more Dwarf-y would be a big deal for Thor. He's already a big ol' wide boi, and he really cares about his hair and beard.... and alcohol. Also there's the Ersatz Eye which is pure flavor, but hey if you want a prosthetic eye...
I would for sure opt for Cleric 9 over Fighter > 11 ... *** I wonder, since he's always wearing armor, if you could do this with Armorer Artificer 10/ Cleric, maybe a couple fighter levels... Armorer gives you the gauntlets of ogre power, the headband of intellect, lightning launchers, winged boots, returning weapon, lightning bolt, shatter, thunderwave, booming blade...it gives you a lot! **
Thor is primarily a melee combatant so he needs a lot of attacks. You can get away with 2, but 3 is better. Artificer can work. I don’t think it’s better though. But it can certainly work.
Given that flavour is free I would change the cleric out for warlock. Specifically, Djinn Genie Patron. You can flavour the eldritch blast as you throwing your hammer (does force damage which is close enough to bludgeoning) with a little extra thunder damage on top, and at 6th lvl you get concentration free flight. You also get better spell progression and eldritch invocations that will increase your blasts, improved pact and weapon eldritch smite for when you make melee attacks and so on. Furthermore, again flavour is free, you could flavour the hammer as a shield and use the axe as your pact weapon. With EK allowing you to attack with a bonus attack when you cast a cantrip you can be throwing out 3 EB ‘Hammer Throws’ before rounding on them in melee with your pact weapon axe. Finally, it’s rubbish so it’s outside of the main thoughts. If you want to have a way of flavouring when Thor goes from normal clothes to armoured up monster, take Amour of Shadows and cast mage armour and make it look cool. You’d have to redo stats to get a half decent DEX but it’s an option. A bad one, but an option.
@@cmccbuilds8229 Because you get enough lower level spells with EK at the end of the build and warlock pact slots not mixing with EK means you get decent spell slots from them as well. Cleric spell list isn’t great but you get a lot of mileage out of short rests as an EK and more spell slots with warlock too.
at level four of the caracter, can i change the feat "Combatant with two weapons" instead of "great weapon master" to hit twice in one turn with weapons even if they r not light sir?
19:00 Thunder damage doesn’t trigger the lightning damage knock back sadly. Not sure if anyone else caught this yet. Been looking for a way to trigger that cleric skill with melee so decided to watch this video. 😢

With an American/English accent, not an Icelandic/Scandavanian one

The google tts gives the correct prounounciation(misspel?) in Icelandic or i could just make a short for you with only the word Mjölnir

As a dm I reworked the staff of thunder and lighting into either the hammer or Axe. Depending upon what my player wanted
that's awesome! I'd probably make it a light hammer so I could throw it and return it to my hand with Weapon Bond.

Why does warlock give better spell progression than cleric? It’s actually much worse for spell slot progression.
