      @funbro99 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Take it to 7th level and you have 8 manuvers and 7 dices to fuel it
      Tho ive been debating if that or 6/6 is better as both are 1d8 damage/roll added
      Especially becuase that would only require 4 levels (excluding Vhuman) to make such a package deal for a multiclass.

      A good way to feel like a battle master right at level 1 (Martial adept feat + Superior technique)

    this reminds me of the "fighter variant" class someone made. its basically "every fighter has manuvers, some have specific ones to their class. have fun"

    True story. I've built three different Battle Masters, and they all play differently. The first is an agile duelist who focuses on one-on-one fighting, the second is a Heavy Crossbow-toting marksman who focuses on weakening and disabling enemies for the party to finish off, and the third is a defensive Spear and Shield brawler who weaves in and out between friend and foe, defending her allies and striking her opponents from outside their reach.

    I wasn't well aware of this subclass, but seeing it be played by Liam O'brien in the latest Critial Role campaign really opened my mind to it.
    if I ever want to play Fighter, this is probably the only subclass I'd even consider.

    • @WolfHreda
      @WolfHreda ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'd consider the Samurai or the Psi Warrior, as well. They're very well-built. The rest of them (with two exceptions, imo) are decently made and might fit your theme for certain characters, but the Battle Master, Psi Warrior, and Samurai are just *built different.*

    Wow excellent timing, Im actually building a Battlemaster Fighter right now for an upcoming campaign. He uses a longspear (pike) and is a wealthy charismatic merchant and cunning tactician. Great overview, i think i agree with everything you said, Battlemaster is my favorite Fighter and one of my fav subclasses in 5e overall.

    Know your enemy.
    Player: "I watch my enemy for a minute and assess his armour."
    GM: "What's your AC?"
    Player: "20"
    GM: "Yeah, it's lower than that."
    Player: "Ok. I drop my shield and assess again."
    Player: "OK, his AC is 15. I put all my clothes back on. Now... HP. Where's my dagger?"

      TBH, I'd look for Strength after AC. If you've got at least 18, then getting to know whether they're stronger or weaker than you can really help understand how hard they're gonna hit you back after you hit them.

    I had a Battle Master in Curse of Strahd and the DM had to resort to distance spell attacks just to keep the fight going long enough to be enjoyable understandably so because I was literally Arthur Dayne.

    I’m in a game where I’m playing as a Human Battle Master w/ Tavern Brawler feat. And how he got the way he is, was he served in a military and he’d challenge his commanding officer but never won a fight with the commander. So he’s trying to improve his overall skills to hopefully best his Commander & cement his place as the greatest warrior in the land

  • @OneTrueNobody

    I have a 5e character concept that's all about being a noble-background adventurer who rather than being a powerful fighter on her own, is more of a tactical leader for the party who assesses the situation, then contrives and executes teamwork solutions to the challenge at hand. There are so many Battle Master maneuvers that play into that idea that I'm honestly a bit spoiled for choice; it's hard to say which maneuvers should be prioritized at earlier levels and which should be left for later. And that's just one way to shape a Battle Master; you can go to almost any combination of heavy-handed martial force and skillful, tactical finesse that you can imagine.
    What makes the Battle Master so interesting is that it's one of those subclasses in 5e that almost makes you feel like you have the sort of build flexibility you might enjoy in 3rd Edition. It's not nearly the same thing, of course, but the important thing is that it feels that way. Fires the imagination in both the narrative arena and the mechanical one.

    If you don't know which tool proficiency to take, Carpenter's is a good default for stealthy characters in particular, as it gives you a bonus to Stealth checks on wooden surfaces.

    I’m playing a melee warlock that is multiclassing into battle master and it’s been such a journey. He’s 12 warlock and rn 2 fighter. His backstory is that his older brother is a high ranking officer in an order of elite knights and even though my character isn’t, he grew up around his brother but never had the talent(or the body type) to join the order. Now though through his super natural strength given to him through his warlock pact he has slowly started learning what his brother tried to teach him when he was young. Now that my character’s next level up will be battle master he’s returning to his home town to learn from his brother first hand.

    After running through the full roster of martial classes and their subclasses, I fell in love with battlemaster during one moment in a campaign against a frost giant. We were lvl 16, I was low on health, but had been saving my superiority dice for this one miniboss in the form of a frost giant warrior with a thankfully unenchanted greatsword. I used my own greatsword. The dm rolled the giant's attack on me and it was a nat20. He rolled the dice, and that would have been enough to just finish off all my health and put me out of the fight. But I decided to throw nearly all my dice into a parry maneuver.
    I rolled. I prayed and hoped. And low and behold... all but a 1 of the dice maxed out and I negated all of the damage. Dm decided to rule the zero damage as a miss, so I got to use the rest of my dice in a riposte. Another bunch of high rolls plus my own attack being a crit, and the giant who was already low on health himself was dead.
    I have not used another subclass ever since. Battlemaster is my favourite

    Might sound crazy but for a multi class I would’ve loved the idea of a assassin rogue, surprise rounds and going first on initiative would make you a menace that feels like you are the one controlling the battlefield.

    this might be a hot take but I think all martial classes should have one or 2 set maneuvers to make marshal classes a bit more versatile and allow the player to spice up their turns with some utility if they want to use it but I would also want battle master to be relevant so maybe a slight rework because I feel martial classes don't have a crazy amount of options and a few cool moves to spice up their experience would be cool. : )

      That's one of the things I like about One D&D, how martials get the weapon masteries to varying extents. Obviously it still needs some polishing but it makes a surprising amount of difference.

    • @mitchmcginn4250
      @mitchmcginn4250 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely NOT a hot take. I completely agree. Fighters as a base should have one to two maneuvers (plus the Tasha's Guide Fighting Style pertaining to them) to choose with a d4 as the die and it increases to a d6 over time but the Battle Master cranks it up to a d8 and so forth.

    Yeah this reminds me of a very shitty DM i had in a campaign (probably did not understand the rules). I was playing as a Battlemaster and used my maneuvers like a normal fighter would.
    He did not understand that those superiority dice came back on a short rest and didn't give the party any short rests. The result was a less then desiarable character becasue i could not use my abbilities the way they should. Luckily nobody was playing a Warlock...
    yeah DM's please just give your parties short rest's ok it doesn't brake the game. Characters can't heal themselfs idefinetly (beceause of the Hit Dice rules) and giving a fighter more maneuver's each day doesn't brake the game.

    Before getting into 5e, I heard tanking wasn't possible. I am old guard. I started in 2nd Ed. I was skeptical that position couldn't make an effective tank. Then I found the battlemaster...now I don't know what the heck these people are talking about.
    My backup character for my current game is a battlemaster fighter that I designed to tank.
    I am somewhat eager to try him out. Unfortunately, there is next to no lethality in 5e combat...and I am not going to go out of my way to off my current character.
