You’ll notice most of the hardcore “minimalists” that are out there are TH-camrs or bloggers - who have no dress code. Nothing wrong with that, but certain lifestyles have lifestyle requirements. Those of us who have office requirements or maybe don’t go to an office, but have certain professional expectations around our style might have less versatility. Someone like Steve Jobs wore the same turtleneck and jeans, but he also was someone who nobody could tell him what to wear, even if they wanted to. Even if he were at your wedding, he’s Steve Jobs. If he doesn’t want to wear a suit, who would tell him he had to? Great video, Brock! Minimalism is about being intentional about what you own. If you truly get use out of 11 shirts, or 15, or even 20, that’s the whole point. It’s just about making sure nothing goes to waste and nothing is owned for the purpose of being worn, but the practice of being clutter.

Love the closing comments about the definition of a minimalist closet. It really does differ/vary depending on the person and it sucks when people impose their definition on somebody else. It's a very slight tweak but I find swapping "essentialism" for "minimalism" to be really helpful. Minimalism naturally focuses on "minimizing" and can result in people trying to compete and have the least amount of items. Essentialism on the other hand focuses on what you said -- trimming the fat and only having what is essential to us. Just my two cents -- great video as always!

You give solid advice to young men in establishing a wardrobe style with essential principles that last a lifetime. An essential point is a personal uniform makes life much easier and allows you to focus on moe important things. You aren't bothered by trends, latest styles, the expense of short term clothing and more. You aren't out of style but not trendy. That's true minimalism I think and has worked for decades for me.

Went to live with monks in Spain for 2 weeks. Returned and was inspired to get rid of most of my materials. Their minimalism is different from mine, but was still inspired as a Catholic.
I got rid of about 80% of my possessions and found the temporal benefit of a capsule wardrobe.

1 set of good casual jeans. Selvedge ideally, but get whatever suits your taste.
1 set good gym shorts. If you don’t workout get some normal Bermuda or khaki shorts. If you need your backpack to fit in your pants get cargo shorts.
1 set dress pants. Whatever goes best with your wardrobe. Navy is good, or you could go the olive green route too.
That’s all the pants you need.

You don’t bombard us with sponsored contend, you don’t try to force your opinion onto us. It feels like you only do videos about topics that you personally enjoy, and that is really coming through to us viewers in terms of quality and in terms of value the video provides for us. Someone once described minimalism and essentialism to me with this example: Imagine that you had 30 ties (or shirts). Some you got years ago but never got rid of, some were given to you, but you didn't really want them. You really only wear 4 of them regularly, and 2 of them on special occasions. What if you only kept those 6 "good" ties? You wouldn't be depriving yourself. Rather, you would be getting rid of the crap you didn't want anyways, and you would be wearing your "favorite" ties everyday!
PS-- My minimalist color scheme is light blue, olive, white, and light grey!

I am in a transition, as I have been losing weight. But I was thinking about switching to a minimalist wardrobe once I reach my goal weight. At the beginning of the summer, I bought 6 summer shirts to get through the summer, and to fit given the weight i gained over the winter. Of those, I actually am only wearing 4 regularly, and the thing I noticed about those 4 is their versatility. They are all shirts in a summer weight that can transition from business or business casual to casual. None are really dressy, but none look out of place with a jacket and tie, but all can be worn with khakis or shorts if necessary. 3 of the 4 are solid colors, and one is a simple repeating pattern that looks great with a plan jacket and tie.
So my thought was, this winter as i get closer to my goal weight, to throw away or donate a lot of the cheaper shirts I have, keep the best ones, and buy a few new ones so I have a small collection of really good shirts that would include 2 white, or off white oxford shirts, 2 blue shirts, and 1 other color for a change of pace. So long as I keep up with my laundry every week, I should be better off than I am now with 25 or 30 shirts in different states of repair or disrepair and different sizes. And it should make getting dressed a lot easier.

  • @thomasdc2439
    @thomasdc2439 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a capsule wardrobe and try to be as minimalistic as possible. But having enough shirts for the entire week (+1 backup) is in my opinion much better than owning only 1 or 2. It is much easier to do laundry once a week instead of washing your shirts every second day. It's even more environment friendly if you use a washing machine for a pile of clothes and not only for 2-3 pieces.

Mannn.... i wouldn't even call it "minimalist style" I'd call it your "basics" or your "essentials" but only this generation loves to label or rewrite everything, it's only making things more complicated & confusing. 😂
Anyways, the advice you give in this video still and will always be relevant no matter how many times people try to reintroduce it. Thanks

Great video. As someone who is visually impaired and tries to help other blind/visually impaired people be more conscious about their wardrobes, I think the information is very descriptive and straightforward, which is helpful for us who may not be able to see well (if at all). I also love the minimalist approach because it narrows down what we have to navigate through in order to put together a great looking outfit. Keep up the awesome work! 👍🏾

Commenting as a professional (attorney), my minimalist version includes 12 dress shirts, as I wear one 5 days a week, sometimes need to change shirt for evening out. White (3), Lt. Blue solid (3) , White w/ Blue stripe (3) , Blue w/ White Stripe (3) .
Casual, OCBD (2) both Blue Check, 1 small pattern, 1 large , golf shirts (4), Tees (3), Henley (3). All Casual shirts White, Navy, Black, or Grey .
Sweaters, V neck (3), crew (2), turtleneck (2), Black cardigan (1) All sweaters Black, Navy, Lt. & Charcoal Grey.(1)
Like the man says in the video, once you perfect the uniform concept, makes dressing easy while still being sharp as hell. George Clooney agrees with him, look how good he always looks

This video has described 90% of my shirts down to the colors. Thanks for the confirmation! There is minimalism and there is practical. Of course, you need the number of shirts you prescribe unless you don't believe in wearing clean clothes. Living in Southern California I would not sacrifice my navy flannel shirt. And I need a linen shirt. We do have 2 seasons. The one casual necessity for me that you omit is a chambray shirt, especially for layering. An alternative to a sweater.

I would add some v-neck performance fabric undershirts to prolong the life of the exterior shirts by protecting them from bodily sweat, oils, and dead skin cells. Along with a bit of spot cleaning I have had no need to wash my expensive silk camp shirts and linen blend polos this last summer. The undershirts took a beaten of filth and washing instead.

This is sound advice for people who don’t appreciate color and find wardrobe stuff a pain.
I LOVE vibrant colors so there is zero change of my purging my wardrobe of purple and oranges.
They aren’t really any harder to match than more neutral colors. Purple - for instance goes work dark blue, gray, black, beige, etc.
I do wear neutrals both by themselves and with more bold colors.
Do agree with your larger point - trim the fat and wear what you love and ditch the mediocre.
    Well done.

I think this is really solid, even for people like me who will never go minimalist (cause laundry) with maybe a caveat to add that maybe you need more of a certain kind of clothing for work etc. you might need to lean into that type more, or maybe that's where you can add those extra diverse pieces. Or if you want to keep that minimal aesthetic a set of duplicates. I would in fact say most people need more of one kind of shirt as very few people have such a balanced life.
I need plenty of t-shirts as that's what I need for work (changing clothes for the cleanroom 3 times away makes them the best option) and also I don't want to be doing laundry the whole time. I definitely don't need all my formal or even smart casual shirts as I really only need smart casual at the weekend and formal for events a few times a year. If I was at a desk more I'd probably want 6 solid smart casual options again from a washing perspective, but I could keep . White, grey, blue, navy Oxfords, a check flannel and another, but that would let me cut my t-shirts down.
I'll never be a minimalist, but this is still really useful.

Here in California, I wear only short sleeved shirts, except for weddings and funerals, when I wear a long-sleeved shirt with a coat and tie. Great video I’m actually lost in a pile of shirts, I think I have purchased to many of them sometimes it’s like you mentioned overwhelming to choose and put together an outfit. I’m just not sure what to trim I like and use all of my shirts, I’m heavily involved in church and need at least five different outfits every week, not counting the everyday casual stuff

I'm not trying to be a minimalist but I am trying to apply it in certain places in differing degrees of severity. Need to get rid of useless clutter.

In my opinion, the denim shirt is a basic, an essential; but I'm turning minimalist so I only have... six.
