The Best Clothing Colors for Men | Why You Should Wear Neutral Colors

  • The best clothing colors for most men are neutral colors. Buying clothes in a neutral color is a great way for any man - regardless of body type, age, skin tone or style preferences - to build a versatile wardrobe.
    Here’s why I love wearing neutral colors and why all of my wardrobe staples are in neutral colors. First off: neutral colors include black, white, any shade of grey, beige/cream and navy.
    Even if you only wore these colors, you could be well-dressed and stylish every single day, no matter the occasion. If you throw in a couple more versatile colors, such as olive and light blue, you’ve got a complete wardrobe.
    Here’s the best part: if you like other, less standard colors, they will also work with this palette. For example, if you love wearing burgundy or look great in yellow, both of those colors work well on top of a neutral wardrobe. You don’t have to add extra colors, but it’s very easy to do so. Here are some of the benefits of neutral colors:
    #1: All Your Clothes Look Good Together
    With a neutral wardrobe, putting together an outfit or packing for a trip is a breeze. You can almost get dressed in the dark because everything goes together.
    #2: You Can Always Add Color (But you Can’t Remove It)
    If you want to be more colorful, you can always add splashes of color to a neutral wardrobe. But if all your clothes are bright and colorful, it’s impossible to remove that color for a more subdued look.
    #3: Easy to Control Your Contrast
    As a shorter man, I prefer low contrast outfits. In other words, I try to minimize the difference in tone between my top and bottom halves. But that doesn’t mean I always have to wear dark colors, as some style “advice” for shorter men would suggest.
    I love wearing light colors, but I want to make sure those outfits are also low contrast. With a neutral wardrobe, this is easy.

    I'm a woman, all the colourful stuff is in my tops and dresses/one pieces, all bottoms, outerwear and shoes and bags are neutral/black/white which means everything will always match and nothing will clash. If you want to bring colour in and still have a versatile wardrobe, add colour to ONE category of clothing 99% of the time.

    This literally is one of the best mens fashion videos I have ever seen. Thanks Brock. The modest, minimal fashion you provide ideology on is lost in todays society. Where hypebeasts and streetwear has really taken over. I must admit I love streetwear but after watching your videos I have really been able to go out buy a few pieces and add them to a wardrobe that goes from day to night very easily. Which is ideal with my work schedule. Keep up the good work...

    I might be repeating myself. I apologize if I am. But the gray/neutral colors in the world of oil painting are referred to as " the beautiful grays." They are mysterious and they actually change throughout the day as the light changes. Strong color is actually more stationary. If you wear too much strong color, it saturates the retina very quickly forcing the viewer to turn away. Strong color grabs the attention quickly, but then loses it just as quickly.. Guys who try to ' peacock " and draw attention by wearing loads of color can actually create the opposite effect they intended.

    • @westfieldartworks8188
      @westfieldartworks8188 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You can google the science of color and how it affects the retina of the eye. Strong color is great in small doses. If you look at any great painting in Art, you will see that 80-90% of the canvas is composed of grays....with only small bits of strong intense color. The only images you see that are strong in color are advertisements; they are designed to grab your attention quickly, knowing full well that you will turn away after a second or so. The Pepsi sign is a good example. IF you want to hold a viewers attention, you have to be careful with the amount of strong color you cover yourself with. The grays are really where it's at. Grays, good texture, and fit. A small pop of color is generally best But yeah, Kubensis, google strong color and how it affects they eye....and your brain which is attached to the eye of course by way of the optic nerve. It's fascinating. .

    Using Neutrals is the best course. It makes shopping a breeze. It makes layering a breeze. It is almost impossible to mess up. When you use them consider the 60:30:10 outfit rule: 60% of your outfit is one color. 30% of your outfit is a supporting color. 10% of your outfit is the highlight color. An example of this rule would could be a Navy Suit supported by a white shirt with a true red color tie.

    Its also important to know colors that fit your skin tone and color blocking.
    There is actually some sicence and math behind it.
    Fx the brown shoes always fit a navy blue and thats because brown is a complementary color of navy blue.

    Really solid advice, Brock. My fashion sense is a little more on the rock or casual side, but the colour palette advice is equally applicable. It also makes buying new clothes less risky. If I see a pair of navy/grey sneakers I like, I don't have to worry about whether it will fit in with other clothes if I already have jeans, shirts and t-shirts in shades of grey and blue. Same goes for having black, burgundy, olive in your wardrobe.

    Great content some sound advice . the only thing i think that needs to be added is skin undertone. you have to choose your neutral colors in a warm tone or cool tone depending on the undertone of your skin. for example I have a warm skin undertone and its optimal for my skin to wear a warm toned cream white than pure bright white and a rust brown or chocolate brown instead of a classic cool toned beige. even down to Navy blue is more complementary to my warmer tone skin than black because warm tones have yellow undertone which can make the skin tone more peachy in fair skin tones which orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel so they are complementary where as cool tones have a blue undertone which will complement black better do to its stark lack of warmth which will be complementary to cool tones in the way a stark black and white look good together. and no matter what your skin from very pale to very deep everyone has either cool or warm undertones so deff something to keep in mind if you wan't to wear the optimal complementary neutrals

  • @DEXVD
    @DEXVD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video, my only suggestion would be to be aware of what colours work best for your skin tone. For example my skin tone looks way better with black, white, grey than with beige, brown, olive green or orange. Therefore for clothing up around my face like shirts, sweaters, sport coats or outerwear, I know I will look better if I avoid earth tones. From my understanding its pretty much one or the other you should be able to put on a beige shirt and a white shirt and determine which compliments your skin tone better. For me a warm beige shirt will highlight the rosy pink undertones of my skin while the cool white shirt will wash some of that out and make my skin appear less 'rosy'. There are some sites that talk of skin tones that I find a little tough to discern as they are more targeted at women but I think I am a "cool winter" which they suggest looks better to avoid "warm colours" and instead stick with "cool colours" like blue, purples and reds.

    • @flatrockfiend
      @flatrockfiend 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also a cool winter, red isn't really a cool color it's a warm color, instead try maroon which is red with just a hint of blue (the coolest color there is) but not enough to be considered purple or the right shade of pink with no hints of orange(not corral which is that pale orange color that almost looks pink), I wear it as shirts only guys have to be careful how they wear pink, but a hot pink polo or a pink dress shirt looks great paired with a pair of grey chinos. Also consider forest and mint greens over yellow greens and olive greens because they have more blue(cool) than yellow (warm). I've noticed my worst colors being off whites, tans ,browns, red, yellow and the worst of all orange since it is a combination of red and yellow and sits between them on the color wheel and is the warmest color, browns tend to be on the darker spectrum of the oranges and yellows if they fall anywhere on the color wheel. Another thing you may wish to consider if you are cool winter is to avoid gold/brass colored belt buckles, watches, rings, eye glass frames and the like always go for silver/stainless/pewter colored metals. If you want to wear warm colors just follow a few rules, 1)If you wear a warm color only wear one warm color at a time 2)you can wear them as accent colors such as stripes on a tie. 3 and 4) keep warm colors away from your face, and hints of cool colors can really cool down warm items for instance I have a red plaid shirt but half of the checks are grey and I always wear it with a forest green t-shirt showing underneath sitting just under my chin. I have another brown polo that looks good on me even though it shouldn't being brown, because it has a blue stripe down the center and a blue collar. I tend to just stick with a few striped ties, outer shirts, and coats/jackets for my warm colors because they are the easiest combine with cool under shirts or in the case of striped ties, cool dress shirts,.... everything else is cool, you may look best in cool colors but it's nice to have just a few warm items to keep your wardrobe interesting 5) choose the right warm colors for instance light lemon yellows are better than mustard yellows.
      Another thing to consider past color is your contrast levels, if your hair is dark and skin is light or vise versa combine light and dark colored clothes to create balance, but if your hair and skin are about the same degree of light and dark wear clothes that are less contrasting in light and darkness

      Thats true, not all reds, the stuff I have seen recommended cherry red, a bit cooler than the primary or fire engine red and a lot of different shades of pink, however based on my personal experience, I feel that I personally don't look great in a lot of the shades of pink I've tried on but they may have not been exactly the pink shades that are recommended.

    Thanks for the video and tips. I went over by wardrobe pretty comprehensively in the last couple of years. I found that many of the logo or brandings on t shirts, polo's and sweatshirts were not as versatile for me. It was a time where I wanted to show a polo placket's distinct check patter, or a my "going out" and "clubbing" button front shirts where so exagerated in details like printing inside the cuffs and detailed stitches on the collar that I would wear them once and that's it. Now I stick with charcoal, black, white for basics. Chocolate brown, navy, charcoal, olive and burgundy for some color, and I gotta say that most of my clothing goes very well with the other pieces. From casual to smarter fit I do: pocket t, henley, work shirt button front, ocbd, dress shirt. I have each piece in both M and L depending on the fit I want to have will be more relaxed or smarter fit.

    One of your best videos to date, I find myself coming back to it quite often and it has definitely helped me out the most in my "style" journey with color blocking. I remember owning nothing but bright colored shirts and like you said very individual pieces when I first started that I'd have so much trouble putting together with my other clothes. It's always good to remind myself of the basics, you're the man Brock!

    Awesome teaching of the fundamentals of developing a wardrobe. I've stuck to dark neutrals colours for most of my life (ie: Black and Dark blue). And I've recently branch out, buying yellow chukkas and tan Chinos, and I've been looking for a nice way to complete the upper half. This video helps a lot to help understand the lighter half of the neutral colour palette. Thanks.

    This is basic clothing color use or one can call it : the easiest color combination rules for men's clothing.
    A great artist said : " No ugly colors, there only be wrong color combination, put in bad composition " , or every one knows this saying : There is no ugly woman, there only be women who don't know how to beautify themselves.
    A real outstanding fashion designer, he can use ANY color to beautify a man.
    But I must say, this video clip is useful for men who are being lack of real life experience < Or about theory of mixing color > or color combination for clothing. Choosing color for a specific person that also depend on the shape, the build, the skin color of that person and the environment the person are being in....too.
    Grey, olive, black, white, dark blue, tan, navy are kind of "color in THE BOX - A SAFE BOX", One should think "OUTSIDE OF THE BOX " , dare to play NO RULE once you know too well of yourself and color combination rules.
    Be creative and bold as well as free....
    Thanks.

    I choose color pallets based on matching to my fragrances. I'm a FragHead so its scent driving sartorial. For example, Terre d'Hermes with its "dirty" orange, brown spices and orangey-brown spices match well with autumnal colors like burnt orange, rust and brown. A Fougere like Tom Ford Beau de Jour or fig leaf scent like Dior Dune, greens. Guerlain Homme? mint green.

      I have a question, in your opinion which suits a black jeans, super washed out light blue jeans and a khaki chino better. A grey or tan chelsea boots? I mostly wear the black jeans, sometimes i go with the chinos and rarely put on the light jeans. Getting new footwear soon need recommendations.
      Edit: I also usually go with a white, black or grey T's with a black leather jacket.
