Based on several british characters, including James Bond. Mimi Rogers, who plays the woman who works with Austin, at the beginning (Mimi Rogers) took inspiration for her character from The Avengers - a 1960s british spy tv show. A must watch.
Hello, You are both correct it mainly satire to 007. Random Task is parody of Odd Job, the Japanese villain who threw his hat like a frisbee - but his hat had a razor sharp rim. Alotta's name was a reference to the character who was named Pussy Galore. Even Dr Evil was based on a character called Blofeld who was bald and had a scarred eye.
Several actors played Blofeld..they all looked different. Dr. Evil is modeled after Donald Pleasance in You Only Live Twice..the voice is based on Dana Carvey's impression of Lorne Michaels.

Austin Powers' chest hair is a parody of Sean Connery who was known to have a lot of chest hair, and Dr. Evil's elaborate killing methods spoof those in James Bond films.
What I like about these ladies is that they can always find some humor in the comedies they watch despite the obvious pop culture references or dated humor. People in their 20’s aren’t likely to get 60’s or even 90’s related jokes but they still know funny when they see it.
Many things in the movies are parodies of 007 and the 60's, such as the elaborate killing methods with sharks (or, in this case, sea bass), ridiculous technological weapons and gadgets, the costumes, and even the Korean killer (his name in this movie was "Random Task", in 007 there was an Asian character named "Odd Job" who threw a hat as a weapon). It's so wonderful seeing your reactions to both comedy and horror because of how expressive you are.
For those of you not from the U.S., "carnies" is short for people who work in traveling carnival shows and circuses. Also... Clown makeup is creepy. I'd already thought that as a kid in the 80s, and then the original IT movies came out. Those didn't help at all. Great movies and all, don't get me wrong, just... clowns were pretty much doomed to universally strike fear in all peolple after that point.
I saw someone recommend 'Bedazzled' (2000) and I agree that would be a funny reaction. A couple more comedy movies are 'Evolution' (2001) and 'Anger Management' (2003)
The most impressive part about Austin Powers is Myer's appreciation for his own British heritage, he nails the accent! It's difficult to tell he's American which is VERY rare. Americans usually can't do good British accents.

Here we go! The Spy Who Loved Me is part of the James Bond Franchise-arguably the most successful Movie Franchise with James Bomd being the primary driver of the story. This is a SNL skit actor making fun of the stories-he does a fun job, but I don’t know if it is funny without knowing the foundation. Enjoy Ladies! If you do decide to give a reaction to James Bond please consider starting at the beginning with Sean Connery films-De No is considered the first, Goldfinger is also a great place to start too.
Definitely see them in release order. "Dr. No", "From Russia with Love", "Goldfinger", "Thunderball", "You Only Live Twice", and so on. The first three were still developing the Bond formula, and "Thunderball" was the first film to include all of the elements.
This is a parody of the James Bond films up to the 90's. If you watched those movies you would see the same characters, and there is wordplay on the names. For example "Random Task" is called "Odd Job" in Goldfinger, the James Bond film he is based on. Also the actor who played Random Task is in prison for killing a couple of people. 🦄 Austin Powers Two and Three are pretty good - I think you might enjoy 3 more because of the cameos by famous actors.

As mentioned, there is a lot of James Bond spoofs. For example, classic Bond girls sometimes really do have really silly, suggestive names. Dr. Evil is very similar to how recurring villain Blofeld was shown in _You Only Live Twice_ and Random Task is a spoof of _Goldfinger_ henchman Oddjob. These are only some examples. Watching at least 1 James Bond film from each actor is something you could consider doing.
So this parodies 60's spy movies, the James Bond movies in particular. James Bond was written by Ian Fleming, and another spy series he created was The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which got a really good movie remake in 2015. And I really like the butterflies!
