    My husband has borrowed from his 401K (before we knew Ramsey) and the interest charged for the loan DID GO BACK TO HIM (401K). The interest DID NOT go to the company. Never borrowing from 401K again, though. The opportunity cost was a stupid tax.

    • @LOLZHAHANOTFUNNY
      @LOLZHAHANOTFUNNY ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah George missed the ball on this one. The interest is paid back to the account owner, albeit at a lower rate than the money would be making in the stock market. Sometimes 3 or 4 percent, and those dollars aren't in the market making money. And it's typically only half of the balance of the 401k is eligible as a loan amount.

    • @jefferydoherty7368
      @jefferydoherty7368 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree with kassidy. Few things to add. You pay back the loan with after tax dollars, so you interest rate (return) is lower if you do the math. Most plan charge loan fee's for taking one. Finally does it not work as car or home loan-fall behind on payments & see what I mean.

    Although Ramsey cohosts do a good job...Dave asks more/better questions to get a full understanding of the caller's background. Often it seems the cohosts ask 1 - 2 questions and then start talking randomly, often having to circle back to clarify the situation. This method sets up a somewhat unfocused conversation. Dave's organized method makes a better listening experience.

    27:28 Serious mistake here. A 401K loan interest is paid back to the account, not the administrator. You're borrowing from yourself. Not to say a 401 K loan doesn't have downsides, you may lose out on growth, and it must be immediately be paid back if you leave the company, otherwise it will be treated as an early distribution, with penalties and tax. But these two were dead wrong on the interest. They should have mentioned the other potential pitfalls which are more significant than the interest.

    There are tax deferred ways to save for retirement (401K) and there are tax deferred ways to save for health care (HSA).
    I am quickly becoming to believe we need a tax deferred program for: A) rent and mortgage payments and savings. B) Educational expenses.
    Both should be treated exactly like an HSA. Debit account triple tax advantaged but can only be used toward approved expenses. (In case of A:Rent, down-payment, mortgage, essential repairs. In case of B: approved Educational course loans, approved future educational courses)
    We are simply taxed too much and the expense is too high. And the simple solution is lower taxes; but I don't trust the parties. Once a program is on the books it seems hard to change so instead of getting relief in simple taxes I'd like to have these on the books.
    And while there will be plenty of room to argue about what should be approved education or essential house repair... we need the break, so let's just get the fight over and do some real tax burden relief.

    401K loan interest is paid back to the borrower. As a small business owner with virtually NO debt, my options to purchase a $30,000 box truck are the following...
    A. Write a check (ouch)
    B. Borrow from a bank at 18%, because they don't value my debt-free lifestyle (Because I'm virtually guaranteed to pay the loan in 12 months based on history)
    C. Borrow from a retirement account, which will continue to accrue investment interest, and when I pay the loan back, the interest gets paid back to MY retirement account. This can be a very viable option.
