Considering they changed Snowflakes gender just so they could have Ariana Grande as the star, I'm willing to bet that most of the script was changed as well and that the original Spanish version is VASTLY different in tone.
Reminds me of when in an English dub of another Hispanic-languaged movie by Harvey Weinstein of all people/companies, they decided to cast Ariana as the main female character with no personality other than the young woman waiting to be rescued and make sure Jennette McCurdy stays unpopular (well, with “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, look who got the last laugh on haters!).

There was a kid's book I really liked when I was little called Black Sheep White Raven and it was about like how there's an outcast on two sides of a family, not just one, and when they meet up one day they try to paint themselves the right color until all of it sudden it rains and washes the stuff off. :p So instead they decide to switch places. :? But as their both completely different species, with the black sheep trying to fit in with the family of ravens and the white raven mixed in with all the white sheep, the two families decided they hated this even more than they did with the outcasts so they end up actually missing them and wanting them back. :p Consider the usual metaphor for a black sheep being different from everyone else in their family for any number of reasons and maybe being considered an outcast for it, and thanks to Disney movies like Beauty and the Beast or The Hunchback of Notre Dame (or even Mulan with how a woman can't join the army, or at least the Chinese one back in the day apparently), I didn't even think it might explicitly be about racism, I just thought it was a nice message that their unique and special in their own way or something. :p I mean, in a literal sense, the rarity of such a species including an albino gorilla right here seems a lot cooler than the average folk to me... :?
I think the dubbing might have been done back while Ari was on Victorious or Sam & Cat. Back when she was a supporting character on a teen sitcom, and absolutely NOBODY thought she would ever be as big as she is now. If she was offered this role now she would almost definitely say no, but back then she was a much more minor celeb which makes it less weird. (Still super ironic given the subject lol) Don't know why David Spade said yes, though. He was in the funniest Disney movie ever! He should've known this would've been nothing like it!
Not to mention that she would've still been a minor at the time, so it was most likely her manager/handlers that convinced her to do it and she accepted believing in their judgement.
My best guess is because this is secretly a Nickelodeon/Dan Schneider movie, made to make Ariana Grande look better than Jennette McCurdy by putting them in the same movie with Ariana as the lead so that a year later, they would make Ariana the famous one and Jennette the most overhated Nickelodeon member since Alexa Nikolas (it’s all Jamie Lynn (and most other cast members and Dan himself)’s fault!)
11:32 in the spanish version he actually wanted to be turn into a black panther, because thats what he feels he is in reality. They really changed everything
@@scp-682-cu6 also the villain apparently suffers bad luck on Donald Duck's level and wanted Snowflake's heart because apparently heart of white gorilla is a main ingredience to potion for eternal luck, not eternal life.
@@ivanacurna6577 Makes the movie even more fucked up and inappropriate tbh, since "killing an albino and harvesting their body parts for good luck" is quite literally exactly what happens to human albino children in some parts of the world to this day... definitely not something to make light of in a kids' movie for sure
I recently researched albino great apes for some reason (adhd rabbitholes don’t ask) and interestingly enough discrimination against albino mutants might actually be a thing in ape communities, at least there was one case documented where there was an albino baby chimp (I think, not 100% sure, might have been a gorilla) that, aside from their mother, other chimps reacted very strangely to. making warning sounds for danger when seeing them and it was eventually killed by other adults. Infanticide is unfortunately a not so uncommon occurrence though, so it’s hard to tell what the reason was. The surrounding situation was just bizarre. Anyways, the movie is obviously still ridiculous and none of that is in any way comparable to human racism, it just reminded me of that story lol
I read Sphinx cats also suffer racism from their "normal haired" peers so I can see it happens in apes, and now that we're upon the subject I seem to distincty remember albino children being mistreated in some african countries as well! Damn, they had a real life issue to tackle and they blew it in every way conceivable!
This is like a year old, but I wanted to point out there is literal discrimination against albino people. In some countries in Africa they have been killed for their disability. I know two Nigerian refugees who have come to Canada to get support for their disability and leave behind the ableism they faced back home. It's not the same as racism for sure tho.
Hello there, in the french dub of the movie (wich I presume is closer to the original script) the bad guy is introduced to be extremely unlucky (like curse level of bad luck) and his "trophies" are actually lucky charms meant to stop his bad luck. In his introduction, some random guy delivers him a new object said to make bad luck go away (there's a actually fun scene when he get's his item, where he's like "hey it worked, that thing on the roof didn't fall and crush you" to the deliveryman and I don't remember what but something bad happens, showing that he still has no luck). In this version he doesn't want snowflake for immortality but because it's supposed to be the strongest lucky charm in existence, also when he get to the witch she's like "no don't do that I already told you there's nothing that can be done against your curse". I have no idea why the english dub changed it the way they did but there you go
"Killing albinos and harvesting their organs as a luck charm" is unfortunately a very real thing that is done to human albino children in certain parts of the world to this day, so kind of really fucked up to include as a throwaway conflict in the haha funny gorilla movie. it might have been seen as passable for spanish and french audiences, but america is a bit more socially conscious, so i wager the higher ups decided it'd be better to play it safe and remove any of the more uncomfortable, dark, real-world connections to ongoing mass murder of disabled children.
@@hellothere9520 that might be the reason... people in america are always scared of mistaking fiction and reality, personally I don't blame the movie for choosing this path. I would say it makes the movie better by actually criticizing and making people aware of real world practices. Sad that it was in a bad movie
@@lehashura490 Just including a serious topic in the plot doesn't mean the movie is "criticizing" said practices, imo. Unless a movie fully commits to the commentary and says something worthwhile about the issue rather than just using it as a backdrop for the movie's own plot about "being yourself
I can’t believe they did my boy so dirty, not only was Snowflake a father of many children and lived a happy life before dying due to his own skin pigmentation, but he was respected by everyone. But this movie straight up just turned a movie about him, into a tone deaf anti-racism story, while changing Snowflake’s gender and identity for the sake of marketability! For shame!
Especially since the issue wasn’t just ‘Snowflake needed confidence’. He contracted skin cancer because of his albinism. In captivity a western lowland can live into their fifties. Cancer took him when he was maybe 38. He needed to spend time in sunlight to thrive but it was also something that killed him. Confidence wasn’t going to help that. If anything the movie could’ve been about how despite having this condition that eventually did take his life, he was able to find success and love. In spite of and because of this condition. Other gorillas clearly didn’t care, as he had three wives and 22 kids (and currently 8 living great-grandkids), and he remains a legend and an icon among people because he’s the only known albino western lowland gorilla.
There is so much of this movie that is contextual of Barcelona. I’ll tell you. In Barcelona the were very proud of having the most unique gorila, and they tried to breed him many times, reproduce the gene. It didn’t worked, and well, on the 2010ths it’s memory was still very alive… I remember watching this film many times on TV3 when I was a child.
No, this was just a bad idea period. Okay an albino animal dealing with being outcast could have worked … but an albino gorilla, wanting to go see a *witch* so he/she can be turned black like the others … then he/she doesn’t use it right away? Why would you not use it right away???
@@LadyLeomon Incredibly late comment, but there's an interesting story someone made of their own original character with a plot premise that's extremely similar to this, being a pale albino cat is discriminated against by her clan of dark colored cats who worship corvids as they see her as a bad omen, and she tries to seek a way to be accepted by them. The character is a cat named Crowsong and there's a lot of animation and projects about the story on TH-cam, it's worth checking out to see the idea done in a less disastrous way lol
Jennette McCurdy is also in the English dub. You know, the one who was forced to do acting by her mother. She wrote a memoir about it called "I'm Glad My Mom Died".
I love Jennette's book. Sadly my mother was a lot like hers, so I relate a *LOT* to what she went through. Good on her for bringing awareness to other victims of toxic parenting. ❤️🩹

What really gets me is that they made this movie and an old saying is ringing I’m my head. “ Some things are better left unmade” and I think this movie fits the bill perfectly
You know, the part about Snowflake covering themselves in dirt to look different reminds me of that scene from Disney's Tarzan. The scene were Tarzan covers himself in mud to try and look more like a gorilla. Why does this scene work but Snowflake's did not? Maybe because it wasn't color that was the issue but just being different in general and the scene ends with Kala being one of the best Disney parents ever? Maybe because the film did a better job at handling it's message? They really should have planned out Snowflake's story better. I think I would rather have a totally ridiculous adventure story over something like this. Another great video.
And adding to that. As you say, context is everything. Here in Spain we don't have the same racial dynamics as the americans. So watching this, the whole black people/white people doesn't really come to mind. So to us is much closer to that Tarzan scene.
If you liked Christopher Lloyd in this, you'll love him as The Hacker in the children's show Cyberchase. This man's performance has made me a life long viewer of the show because I'm too old for the educational math content by this point. They could of gone about it different, like what it's like to be an albino and the difficulties of what it's like to have albinism. From what I know, it's not easy for people (depending on some people as some have it pretty cool while other we're treated differently) and animals (as it effect their survival in the wilderness). A lil realistic approach.
When you first posted the teaser asking us to guess what the movie would be about, my first thought was it had some sort of environmental message like you see the ducks covered in oil from oil spills. NEVER would I have imagined they'd take THIS route.
I honestly thought the gorilla was named Snowflake because…well, right wing extremists DO love to throw that name around a lot. Never knew it was based on an actual albino gorilla named Snowflake.
Saber, love the content you’re making. I’m not sure about others, but I enjoy painting my Warhammer stuff while listening to you in the background. Semi therapeutic in a sense. Keep up the good work!
fun fact: I or saw the film in Italian, in our version it is hinted that the villain is an incredibly unfortunate man (the clumsiness in the Italian version is made to pass for bad luck), and he already knows the witch and seems to have many amulets sent to her (an example is the elephant's tusk) and wants snowflakes for her heart since it would give eternal fortune (it is perhaps also life but I don't remember) however I liked it as a child but now looking at the animations only one thing comes to mind: WHAT THE FUCKING PROBLEMS DID I HAVE AS A CHILD?!
That version sounds much better but at the same time extremely southern European so I can kind of see why they changed it but god knows why they leaned into the racial part
Same, I didn't see the issue as a kid. I remembered this movie just rn. I swear it was a fever dream. The white gorilla is a boy in the French dub too. The bad luck aspect of the movie was in it too I think.
Kung Pow is my most favorite live action comedy ever. Nothing has ever come close. Everyone I know who have seen it think it's cringe and I cannot understand why.

Snowflake was originally named Nfumu Ngui (literally "white gorilla" in Fang language, from Central Africa) when he lived in its natural habitat, and was renamed to Floquet de Neu, in Catalan, when he was brought to the Zoo of Barcelona, and later when he became famous, they began translating his name to other languages 🤓☝️
Maybe if the story was about that particular gorilla trying to find her origins, parents, or even another one like her, it would be a lil better? And as a side story, we could have that rich man trying to hunt her down cause she's an ancient gorilla or whatevs. Taking a similar approach like httyd 3 or rio. Yeah.. that would be cool, I'd watch that. Oh and bring some actual good animators for that movie, along with some decent voice actors.
The irony of Ariana being the world's most notorious black fisher having a line in a movie "she wants to be black" is not lost on me. Truly a treasure.
@@notatallfunctional That’s so dumb although I think the whole “cultural appropriation” thing is people being overly sensitive over someone’s choice of clothing.
It looks like one of those kids films where you can tell just by looking at the cover that not only is it bad, but uncomfortably inappropriate in its intentions!
The message of this film is quite similar to the message of The Birth of a Nation (1915) which is that blacks get more than they deserve, but whites (especially famous women) are the oppressed ones (and with Ariana Grande as the main character being a white gorilla girl and Jennette McCurdy being sidelined as the black gorilla girl that is also the one-dimensional older sister of a gorilla played by Nathan Kress (whom, like Miranda Cosgrove and Jerry Trainor, could’ve said no to the existence of a reboot of a Schneider’s Bakery show, so by 2020s standards, they would be disappointing by going back to being Nickelodeon stars.). The main reasons why both films get less hate than they deserve because of the fact that the only people that like these movies are Arianators who don’t want to hear bad things about Ayn Rand like her justifications of genocide and slavery towards people of colour being bs.
I remember this thing from when I was 8 years old, it was the original version tho, 'cause like that's were I'm from. It was a repressed memory, I did not remember it being a thing until now. I didn't remember shit other than this one scene where Snowflake goes "What did I do?" And the black gorila goes "Exist".
TBH I think a story about an albino gorilla being rejected by its peers and with commentary against discrimination could actually work and make sense... It the writing staff was good.
I mean, it is realistic, some animals have known to hurt albino members of their species. It is *however* weird to make that a racism allegory. If anything wouldn't it make more sense to be like a disability allegory?? Considering that it's a genetic mutation and it can cause light sensitivity and blindness.
I remember watching this movie a couple years ago as a kid, and for whatever reason, I loved it. Thanks for uncovering this weird and fascinating memory.

I've watched this movie both in spanish and catalan and they weren't that bad, but, the english dub and version takes to a whole new f***ing level. I seriously laughed very hard with every quote you put in the video of the movie. Great video btw!
I remember this movie from when I was younger, I had the dvd and it was in the other dub so the red panada actually believed he was a black panther in a red panadas body (so the "black magic" was for both of them) so at 11:31 he is really talking about that, and he said nothing about lobsters in that other dub too... from memory it was ok in the other dub.
I vividly remember watching this movie at the ripe age of 9 years old, eating cornflakes. I remember this because I found the cornflakes box to be more interesting than the movie
I've only ever seen the other English dub (the one with the lesser-known actors), so seeing this dub is eye-opening. Quite frankly the other dub is somehow miles better, despite also being weird and a bit tone-deaf. What's even odder is that dub *also* changes several characters' genders for apparently no reason, so it has to have been a demand from somewhere when both teams did their dubs.
The voice actress, Ariana Grande, also was the voice of Diasporo in the Nickelodeon revival of Winx Club, who was wasted to being a jealous third wheel between Bloom and Sky in Season 5. And who knows why Diasporo was even in Season 6, Ariana Grande was too busy with her music career to even voice Diasporo in Season 6, so Cassandra Morris took over.
And they didn’t even give Jennette McCurdy a role in Winx Club because people think Ariana Grande and the flanderized, privileged bullies of characters she plays are better than everything to do with Jennette (except for the characters SHE played on Nick that just make her look way worse than she actually is. Especially Sam Puckett & Cat Valentine because they were exposed as Karens, especially in the finale of their own show).
@@kieranstark7213 I wish Diasporo from Winx Club has been done justice. In Season 1, it was established that Diasporo was Sky’s fiancée and Bloom accuses her for being part of the Trix, the main antagonists of the show, so Bloom prematurely attacked Diasporo and ruined the live show at Red Fountain, making Bloom feel ashamed of herself. In Season 3, Valtor took advantage of Diasporo’s desire to be with Sky by debugging him into following Diasporos orders, only to be defeated and then banished from Erakylon. Returning to Season 5, She was somehow appointed as liaison of Eraklyon, I don’t know what else happened to her. She returns again in Season 6, somehow invited to Daphne’s coronation party. If Diasporos only purpose to be in Season 5 was to have Ariana Grande voice her in a co-produced season, yet Grande did not return to voice Diasporo in Season 6, then Diasporo appearing in Season 6 would be absolutely pointless. So far the original Spanish dub is less bad but still has the resemblance of predugice. The one thing I remember was the 2D animated opening credit which I guess if they had the time it could have worked. Correct me if I'm wrong, the villian was once a successful person who somehow cross with very bad luck and is surrounded by items and charms that suppose to help.

Here it is! This movie was on in my room in the ER when I broke my arm a year ago, and I was thinking, "Wow, I've never heard of this, and this is awkwardly blended with live action. When's Saberspark going to cover this one?" I didn't realize it was dubbed over at first and thought the morphine was messing with my brain.
Back in the day, I was a huge fan of National Geographic magazine. My family had a subscription. They really hyped the real-life Snowflake from shortly after his capture in 1966 (cover of the March 1967 issue and a big article: I would have been 5) until… I’m not sure, because I started getting skeptical about National Geographic maybe ten years later and wouldn’t always read it. I’d entirely forgotten about Snowflake until this video was announced: I hadn’t even heard that he’d died. Apparently the movie was mostly in Catalan originally and filmed in Barcelona where the real-life Snowflake lived (in the zoo of course). I can see that a sort of twisted local enthusiasm could result in such a movie, but making an English dub with product-placement jokes and a few big names was just a bad idea.
Snowflake the Gorilla is a movie loosely based on Snowflake the gorilla’s life. In actuality, Snowflake the gorilla was an albino gorilla with pinkish eyes, here he (or she in the English version) is a partly anthropomorphic albino gorilla with blue eyes.
As a Spanish voice actor, let me tell you a thing or two: The Spanish dub has the voice actor of Darth Vader for Keith David's character. And the witch is the wife of Chris Hemsworth. Now I want to get Force choked while getting hit by Thor's hammer over and over again.
I remember when Cartoon Network aired this movie in Latin America back in 2015. I know Spain doesn’t have enough experience when it comes to making animated films but I did notice several problems. One of them being Snowflake just discarding the potion which I felt it made his journey pointless (That’s a major narrative rule: The ending must be meaningful and it has to pay off)
@@rolboo6158What about Planet 51, Mort & Phil: Mission Implausible, or Wonder Park? They were animated by Ilion Animation Studios, then called Skydance Animation Madrid. Sure, these films may not be good, but at least they have decent animation.

Yo, racism isn't about blacks being hated on. Didn't think I need to say this, but racism is more complicated than that. The gorilla having white fur doesn't matter. Also Arianna grande IS white. This movie handles racism as well as the MPAA handles ratings, but like, the fur color is not a point that needs to be made.

(Still super ironic given the subject lol)
Don't know why David Spade said yes, though.
With this context, it actually makes more sense.
David spade hasn’t been relevant for years though

@@ivanacurna6577 that explains a lot...
"adhd rabbitholes don't ask"
god if that ain't a mood
For shame!
To be fair, it wasn't the movie per se as much as the english dub lmfao in the spanish dub he's a boy
Not the movie but the english dub
"SHE WANTS TO BE BLACK, YOU MORON!" I will forever quote this scene
The follow up “it’s actually not uncommon in teenagers” is fucking amazing

Heck I think even Maya and the three did a great job talking about discrimination with Chimi and even gave a reason for people not wanting her around.
If you put this movie side-by-side with Zootopia, that would be a prime example of “There’s no such thing as a bad idea, just bad execution”

I love how real Snowflake looks so smug in both photos.
You've pretty much nailed it. Context is everything.
And adding to that. As you say, context is everything. Here in Spain we don't have the same racial dynamics as the americans. So watching this, the whole black people/white people doesn't really come to mind. So to us is much closer to that Tarzan scene.
