Great explanation, Brother. I see guys all the time asking in Facebook groups why their roof looks like crap. Probably because they failed to use h-clips.

I'm using brown 1/2" ZIP decking which doesn't require clips. Their joints are taped. Roofers can also skip the underlayment and nail shingles directly to the zip. I'm however putting poly polypropylene over it just as an additional layer.

Great videos. As more solar projects get installed directly into decking, the H Clips becomes a critical factor towards project success.

Yes. H-clips do make a big difference. Original roof had no H-clips. During summer when the roof cooled at night, I could easily hear creaking sounds in the attic. I knew it was the decking sheets expanding and contracting. Upon re-roof I spec 3/4 osb and H-clips. Now, NO more creaking.

the closer I looked the more I realized someone else had a roof disaster exactly like me. Truss built which was good cause it was done right BUT 2X4 & 24 on center. BUT the 2X4's were from 1967 so they were at least a little stronger than today's. I also had 3/8 plywood which failed after about 15 years & was covered up by OSB (while I was out of town by the jack leg re roofing company) NOW I am having both layers of decking removed with my 3rd reroof job. I have a hip roof with 3/12 pitch so I cannot use foam under the decking. Having all blown in insulation removed during reroofing & uncovering all the clogged up soffit vents. Putting in ridge vent & extra vents on hips Using 19/32 Solarbord from Canadian company for decking. Making damn sure those clips are used on every piece along with 1/8 spacing Wanted to do metal but was not in budget. Using Ownings Corning Duration shingles w OC Deck Defense underlayment.

You still need to maintain the 1/8" gap on the short edge but you don't need to use H clips to do so because the gap is easier to maintain seeing as one board isn't pushing down on the other on an incline.
