    This is something my trainer has drilled me on with the TROT! I hadn’t tried it at the canter though! Standing in your stirrups is so so good for your balance and leg strength 💪

    WE DID IT! This excersize is truly a game changer ! 😁 Practiced my last two rides and had a few AHA moments. My horse loves it! My legs were so much better. This will be Incorporated into my daily riding until I am strong enough to do it well. I gotta tell you, I was very sore after the first day 😅

    Oh how I love this chick. When she screeches "stop gripping with your knees, put your legs on" (about 1.46 into the video) I can't help but chuckle. One because she sounds so Aussie (and love it) and also because it sounds familiar from my pony club days. And by using 2 point to help with getting the correct position for your knee and therefore not gripping is a lightbulb moment. Thank you. 😀👏🏻

    Yes! 2 point work is where it's at. So many times I have people asking me to help them learn to sit the canter better and I immediately have them up in 2 point working g on their leg strength a few have gotten irritated with me saying they were not here to learn a jumping position but quite the opposite. I have to tell them they MUST work on their leg and core strength to be able to sit better. Doesn't matter if your riding in and english saddle, western saddle, endurance saddle or bareback! If you don't work on yourself your horse pays the price unfortunately.
    Thanks for the video!

      What exercises would you suggest to strengthen legs and core muscles to prepare for when I do finally get to start taking lessons again? My horses are too young right now to ride, but I want to be as ready as I possibly can be once I can start riding again!
      I used to only ever trail ride, but I want to start training for more than just bomb proofing and trail riding so I know I'm going to need to better myself first! Any help and tips are appreciated! :D

    I'm a disabled rider and have problems feeling my seat, and my back is rodded so I have very limited movement in my lower back bottom and core, but your tips have helped me smooth out my ride even with the lack of feeling in my legs. I have movement in my legs and can walk a bit, and need a ladder to mount my horse, but your tips have helped me ride better. Thank you.

      A lot of people don't know that the gait of a horse mimics the gate of normal human walking. It not only is fun, but it is good for depression, PTSD, core strength, balance, and the rebuilding of muscles, and even helps with muscle memory. Because I do have the ability to walk a little bit which makes me extremely lucky, I should be able to use equine therapy to strengthen muscles, and regain balance. I topple over at least 2 times a month, and my last oops I fell into a display cabinet in my home ans it fell over on me and all my crystal that was on it got broken. 30 years of collecting gone from 1 fall.
      I am looking for a horse to lease so I can stop renting by the hour, and have more freedom on what I want to do rather it be trail riding or going to the ring to work on skills, I just hope I can afford it. Oy. Wish I had kept my horse when I moved back from Ohio, but boarding a draft horse is way expensive, and the mare we had wasn't mine, but I did also have a cute grey dapple mule who I got to break myself, that was fun.

      @@wheeliemom3079all I can say about your display cabinet falling over you is that it's a good thing crystal got broken instead of bones. Having said that, it's still a huge loss. Sad 😒

    Hii! I am a young rider. I have been trying my hardest, giving out all my strength on the horse to not bounce. The horse i am riding is a nervous one and speeds up with just a mere mistake of mine. He is uncomfortable to the sensations of the reins. As i have been trying my hardest, thinking about him more than myself, i always leaned forward on the horse to not bounce harshly on his back. This video has enabled me to look at all of my riding experiences from a different point. Thank you for that. I am now looking forward to learn and get inspired from you. Love you so much! Have a great day.

    Horses are my passion. I have loved them ever since I was introduced to them (4months old), but it sucks because I only have enough money to go up to the Blue Mountains and ride once a year while I camp. I am so grateful that I even get that opportunity, but every time I think about it, it brings me to tears because horses are such pure, amazing, loving animals and I really want to explore that more, but that is not a possibility for me.

    So I just came on here to say THANK YOUUUUUUU. So much in the equation ring i see SOOOOO much instructors saying arch your back and seeing these kids Jam their heels so far down their lower leg is out in front of them or their upper body is so far forward their lower leg is wayyyy under them from where it should be.
    A friend of mind asked me for advice I said well do some leg relaxing techniques at the walk drop your stirrups and take your knees away from the saddle do bicycle legs rotate your legs your ankles both directions feel but of your seat bones when you pick your stirrups back up check in with yourself ask yourself am i relaxed is my thigh relaxed is my knee pinching can i feel my seat bones evenly
    And she sent me a video in her lesson and her instructor is yelling at her sayinf she has a hunched back to pull her shoulders back and arch her back and im like noooooooooooo dont do that your gonna turn into one of those weebles wabble but fall down itll throw you off balance. Instead of saying bring your shoulders back and arch your back say lift your chest up relax your shoulders and push your belly button into your spine and the best way to learn this is at the trot and have your instruct place their hand on your back to feel you basically lift with your core. I feel like this is a lost method in a lot of disaplines its not taught as commonly over in the states at all. And i rode with a rider who worked for mark Phillips so i was lucky enough to get several months of hands on experience from some of the best equestrians ive idolized since i was a kid and it workksssss i was such a tense rider and still can be but as long as i think relax I follow so much easily.
    I just shared this video with her to show her im not the only one who teaches this with i wish she wasnt 2 hours away because i wanna help her but her trainers methods are sooooo different.

    As a para equestrian my legs are obviously a bit weaker so I use elastics to keep my feet in the stirrups. Lately I’ve been noticing when I’m cantering I’ve become lazy and have started lifting my feet up as if I’m riding stirrupless.. I think I do this because I can’t lose my stirrups so it just feels natural.
    I feel like the 2 point is really going to help me get my legs long and in the stirrups again!!

    ok wow this is something i never realized! Usually I ride 5 gaited horses that i more or less canter exclusively in a 2 point position with maybe a few strides seated if they are really stable in the 3-beat. I got back on a 3 gaited horse some days ago after quite a long while and my seat was so much better in canter! Good to know how I managed to achieve that as I was pretty baffled. I expected to be really bad at sitting trot and canter as I hadn‘t done it in a while… Love all the insight you give into biomechanics and focused exercises for certain parts of riding!

    OMG - That makes sooo much sense! Amazing video instruction on canter work. In steps 3 and 4 I have 3 questions: 1. How do you prevent the lazy horse or the one that ‘struggles a bit’ from falling back into trot when in 2-point - whip? Spur? Body? 2. How do you prevent same horse from falling back into trot when you sit back down in the saddle? 3. At about the 15:00 minute mark you mentioned that you have a good connection with Gee (you look amazing by the way!!) How ARE you connected - with reins? Legs? Body? Or all of the above? Thank you so very much for this video Alicia - I always wondered how you increase the canter energy from working/medium to collected if you are already driving with your seat in the working paces.

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mimi! AMAZING questions, go you! Okay so overall while reading your questions I get the sense that your horse may not be travelling on its own in the canter, so first step is to work on that, when you ask the horse to canter try to either go direct to 2 point or sit still and don't drive the horse with your seat or hold your leg on, then the horse will either keep travelling, or drop back. When the horse drops back immediately send the horse forward and use a quick aid that sends the horse more forward than what you need, then go back to being passive with your forward aid. Repeat if the horse drops again. The goal is to teach the horse to travel without your help! It takes self discipline from you as the rider to not nag and training with the horse. When in 2 point you can use your leg like usual (light aid then quicker follow up if no response).
      When Alicia mentions good connection she is talking about connected into the bridle, think of the training scale! Let me know if this helps 🤩

    This is a brilliant breakdown of exercises. Can I ask - would this work in the trot as well to help keep lower leg stiller? I do a lot of light seat work for jumping and don’t have a bounce in canter, but I find in rising trot I struggle to keep my lower legs very still. If there was the chance to do a similar video around the trot that could be amazing!!! 🙃

      Hi Sophie! Yes absolutely! Watch in the video how Alicia shows you to stand up and sit down in the walk, do this while trotting, then try staying up for 4 beats or 6 and then control your "down" so you tuck bum on down phase. Can also do up for 2 and down for 2. Try this and let me know how you go x

    I use your videos as background noise alot or to show my mom to help her riding(not that I never use these to improve myself!) and today Im making a list of muscle builder brands, biotin brands, and coolers for my horse. Im doing this to see price differences, shipping times, and effectiveness across the board! My gelding and I have improved together so much with alot of help from you and Natasha! We can't thank you enough, really, I would hug you both if I wasn't across the planet from you

    I can’t wait to try this out on my OTTB! She’s struggling with the canter and doesn’t like it when I attempt to really sit the canter. The rising canter might just be the answer to our troubles! Looking forward to our ride tomorrow 😊💪🐴 Thank you Alicia!!

  • @Poetessa2

    That was amazing!! As a someone who rode jumpers my whole like then switched to dressage, I always applied standing in my stirrups in both disciplines, especially at the beginning of the ride to stretch all the leg muscles and put all my weight down in my heels and make my leg longer. It's brilliant and very logical! But I've NEVER heard a dressage trainer...EVER tell someone to do this but I think it's a super effective way to build up a full long legged contact correctly. One thing I thought you may say is remove the stirrups and even go on the lunge to really work on the seat seat seat SEAT and leg. I know they leg can creep on their own but that's why the trainer is there!! To SCREAM! LOL I did A LOT of no stirrup work when I first got my FEI boy because he had HUGE gaits and I found this helped me so much, especially at the Canter, as I was transitioning to a deeper seat from a more forward, a bit a head of the vertical or even 2 point at times in the jumper ring. And posting with no stirrups or even 2 point is not only muscle building but character building because at the beginning you want to cry the whole time!!! lol
    AMAZING VIDEO!!! You're awesome and your horse is stunning!!

    Thank you so much Alicia, I am a beginner rider but have started to learn leg yield etc. I really am struggling with canter that it is stopping me progressing to prelim. I am so frustrated and becoming disheartened. Your videos (and Natasha's) give me such inspiration. You are so clear in your explanations. Especially to me as an adult beginner and person with some physical disabilities (leg weakness from neuro condition). This has really helped me keep going.
    How do I softly suggest to try these exercises to my teacher? She's wondful but I don't want to offend her. I am so desperate to fix this! ♡

    Riding the corner with the outside hand acting as wall exercise went well on Wednesday. Trying to use horizontal rein pressure as much as I could also reduced horse’s resistance to defy. I’m very excited about the new found knowledge from you! Thanks! Can’t wait to try the 2 point seat and rising canter exercises next week during my lesson! My instructor always tells me to sit, not bounce even though I don’t feel that I’m bouncing. What blows my mind here is to learn when not to use my seat to drive the horse! I thought I had to use my seat during a canter and perhaps that’s why I feel that the horse is fighting me when I do that. I hope that this new exercise will motivate the “lazy” horse at the stable. I hate to kick.

    I’m a beginner rider, so how do I keep a trot? and How do I stop my horse from trotting into a canter!? Can you make a video on it!

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jaylynn!! Thanks so much for reaching out! Ideally your horse will be listening to your seat so if you are rising in the trot the horse will follow your rhythm. Are you finding your horse is speeding up and trying to break into canter?

    • @jaylynn4284
      @jaylynn4284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi YourRidingSuccess thank you so much for responding back!!!, and Yes every time I trot I can feel my horse speeding up resulting into a canter…also when my horse starts to canter I tend to lean forward instead of leaning back resulting in me falling off, so how do I lean back?? because I try to but I just feel stuck like I can’t lean back when I try, I’m guessing because I get tense and don’t know what to do!

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jaylynn! Instead of thinking about leaning back, you want to think about ensuring your pelvis is in the correct position as that will prevent you from leaning forward. It sounds like you are tensing with your legs as well which could be why your horse is continuing to speed up and break into canter. Try out some of the tips in the video, but also watch this one on position - th-cam.com/video/qL8swhRKY5s/w-d-xo.html

      @@YourRidingSuccess IT WENT GREAT!!❤️❤️❤️ still lots to learn but for sure going to keep training on this❤️❤️ thank you so so so so much ❤️ even tho i have been riding for 12 years i still bounce in the canter and my legs go out and back alot because im pretty short (1'50/4'11) but i was definitly bouncing way way less, we got to the 2 point in the canter today and after we did a bit of normal canter and i for sure felt it, even my horse did better, in the begining he was a bit confused and did try to come back to trot a few times but he was an absoluut sweetheart today❤️
