Great video Amelia - he’s a lovely dressage horse! This is a great video. Thank you for sharing it. I do both. When I start the canter I lean too far forward in my effort to make the transition. When we're in canter, I struggle to not be behind because I need to stay in canter and I drive with my seat. Also, because of my horse's weaker side, I tend to get thrown to the right side. I have a harder time turning left, as you do Amelia, so my partner and I make each other's issue harder. I'm doing floor exercises and Pilates to help. When I get it right in the saddle, I know I've done it right because my right oblique muscles and left hip muscles tell me they've worked harder. Dino is very honest. If I don't position properly for anything, he doesn't step up and say, "Let me help you with that." He says, "Can't we both go back to the stall and eat?" When I do get it right, he says, "Well I guess I don't have an excuse. Let's do this thing! The sooner we're done, the sooner I get my carrot." It can be very frustrating, but I love Dino. My trainer does too. He's making me a better rider and I'm thankful for that! Are those jackets still on your website? I think my trainer would love it if I had one.

Great video. But I think both the rider and the instructor (on the ground) forgot to explain the most important think: What your legs should do. On the First Strike; It is imperative to open two things: Your hip angle and your upper thighs, and to strike your heels down; All the while plastering your belly button to your spine; Then quickly “drop” everything on the Second Beat, or slightly before --- The horse used in this demo is a very calm an obedient horse with rather smooth movement. Just thinking about (or adjusting) your lumbar position is not enough if one happens to be riding a big Stallion with big movement.
Hi Amelia I love your videos I’ve recently started a different riding school I’ve been used to riding wow steady cobs and highlands and I’m riding slightly faster iclantics, and I’m struggling to find my canter seat as before I could sit to canter well I wasn’t bouncing but I find I’m bouncing and I haven’t really done that before any tips ?
This video is a good start, and then it's practice, practice, practice! Riding is a lifelong journey and it's totally normal to have ebs and flows in our abilities as we change horses. Keep going! You got this.

i get super stressed in the canter from fear I assume, so I'm not sure what to do to calm myself to follow and absorb the movements of the horse. i also think I'm rlly tense in my hips so I need to try some hip opening exercises
Tension and fear can be hard to overcome. In my experience, being confident on the ground and with what you're saying /envisioning to yourself is the first step to help with fear.
I loved this video but I had a hard time not staring at your beautiful horse the whole time! Andalusian? Still looking for my next best friend, I adore the look of yours!

Great question! I have a video on this for the sitting trot. Check it out here: amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/how-to-sit-the-trot/?TH-cam&General
I am not balanced enough to let go of the monkey grip. I am just learning to canter and i feel out of control and I'm so stiff. I have lessons every week and when i start to canter i get a little scared and then tighten up. I am upset with myself that i can't get it. I am an older rider, next birthday 60, so never rode as a kid.
You got this! Sometimes having a grab strap on the front of your saddle can really help especially if you are just learning. I have one on mine just for safety!
I have a damaged lower back L3, L4, L5, S1, S2, S3. It's taken me 5yrs to get back to being able to ride and I am always slightly out of time with my horse - this results in my butt slapping the saddle on occasion. Do you have any tips to help those like me with a "frozen" lower back? Thank you.
Yes! Check out this webinar on Rider Position: I just did a webinar on Rider Position. Check it out: www.amelianewcombdressage.com/free-rider-position-webinar
I have trouble with bigger movers and am told I drive and move too much. It feels like I’m just scooping along to the motion, but when I see video 😬 it’s like instead of 5-10* of forward/backward motion it’s like 30. Is there a trick to feeling it and correcting it?! My poor horse
I work on that with is on my horse and I did this on my horse and I got my horse in her in to a counter and I did a good job with my horse Nannette this video will help me Nannette
Thank you for your comments! Try this video for some more help: amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/the-canter-seat-too-loose-too-tight-or-just-right/

When I do get it right, he says, "Well I guess I don't have an excuse. Let's do this thing! The sooner we're done, the sooner I get my carrot." It can be very frustrating, but I love Dino. My trainer does too. He's making me a better rider and I'm thankful for that! Are those jackets still on your website? I think my trainer would love it if I had one.

Nicely explained
Thank you so much 🙂
This is so helpful since I am a new rider after many years! I tend to be stiff and this will help me be more conscious of my movement. What is the proper way to hold my legs? Do I lightly grip with my thighs or lower leg?
Lightly with lower leg

How do you figure out if your on the correct canter lead? Great video btw!
You want to look at the leg that is leading the stride - it should be the inside front leg!
Great build on the advice Glenn, thanks for watching.
Love the fluorescent striped as a visual aid for observing how the upper body skeleton moves. Could you sew these stripes onto sides of the legs too?
Yes, you probably could!

Thanks Amelia ❤ Always so useful. My instructor is telling me I'm too stiff in the hips 😬
You're so welcome!
i also struggle with canter esp when it does fast canter
Which brand is the jacket with the yellow lines from? I would love to wear such a jacket during my lessons.
Here is a link to the jacket: dressagebyamelia.com/home/p/visualise-light-training-jacket
so many hard words though, abdominals?! 😂 i gotta learn those
Love u miss
Hi Amelia I love your videos I’ve recently started a different riding school I’ve been used to riding wow steady cobs and highlands and I’m riding slightly faster iclantics, and I’m struggling to find my canter seat as before I could sit to canter well I wasn’t bouncing but I find I’m bouncing and I haven’t really done that before any tips ?
This video is a good start, and then it's practice, practice, practice! Riding is a lifelong journey and it's totally normal to have ebs and flows in our abilities as we change horses. Keep going! You got this.
Amelia
What is the company that makes your riding jacket?

I have a bit of trouble keeping my legs draped softly while keeping my weight in my heels!
You may be putting too much emphasis -- and weight -- in your heels. This was/is a problem for me, and letting my heel come up to level makes a big difference.

How to have fix legs in our stirrups, and have legs that do not go everywhere and stay fix in the right position and don’t move?? I struggle to fix that problem, however before I hadn’t this problem, but since lockdowns I lost this habit

i get super stressed in the canter from fear I assume, so I'm not sure what to do to calm myself to follow and absorb the movements of the horse. i also think I'm rlly tense in my hips so I need to try some hip opening exercises
Tension and fear can be hard to overcome. In my experience, being confident on the ground and with what you're saying /envisioning to yourself is the first step to help with fear.
I loved this video but I had a hard time not staring at your beautiful horse the whole time! Andalusian? Still looking for my next best friend, I adore the look of yours!
haha yes he is. He belongs to a client and he's lovely.

I’ve been working on posting during my recent lesson but trying to transition from trot to canter while posting is kind of tricky for me
It definetly can be! If you want some extra help, I recommend signing up for my upcoming Free Rider Position Webinar bit.ly/3LqMFLX
So how would I manage the canter if I have a natural hyperlordosis?
I'm not sure what that is...
Hyperlordosis is when there’s an increased lumbar curve. It can be due to bad posture , mine is due to a odd shaped sacrum so I can’t get out of anterior tilt
Is it possible for you and Stephanie to devise an exercise to show how it feels to use the correct muscles to follow the motion?
Hi Elizabeth!

Ik this was 2 years ago but is sitting the canter like sitting Trot could I just do the same thing?
Thank you.
Yes! Check out this webinar on Rider Position:
I just did a webinar on Rider Position. Check it out:
www.amelianewcombdressage.com/free-rider-position-webinar
I have trouble with bigger movers and am told I drive and move too much. It feels like I’m just scooping along to the motion, but when I see video 😬 it’s like instead of 5-10* of forward/backward motion it’s like 30. Is there a trick to feeling it and correcting it?! My poor horse
Try filming yourself and then watching it back! That will help you!
i had my first canter today!! absolutely terrible hahah fell off, didn’t help that he was going back and forth with trot and canter though lmao
Great job! Keep it up!
oh no, im sorry you had a negative experience with your first canter. I hope you're alright. I nearly fell off last week while cantering too!
I work on that with is on my horse and I did this on my horse and I got my horse in her in to a counter and I did a good job with my horse Nannette this video will help me Nannette
I usually like Amelia's posts the the language in this one is not easy to understand. Too technical.
(for example, ordinary folk don't use the words anterior and posterior - that is med school speak!)
I studied anatomy and I still struggle in this context to know what is meant by anterior and posterior
Thank you for your comments! Try this video for some more help: amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/the-canter-seat-too-loose-too-tight-or-just-right/
