  • Sitting The Trot | How To Move Your Seat. In this video, I will show you how I move my seat/pelvis when I'm working in sitting trot. When I was taught how to sit the trot I was continuously told to sit still but this is not the truth. If you try to sit still you will end up bouncing even more. You must allow your body to move with the horses' movement and that gives the ILLUSION that you are sitting still. I show you how my pelvis moves when I sit trot and I give you 3 sitting trot tips. This will show how to do sitting trot for beginners and will show you how to sit the trot without bouncing.
    I hope it helps you as it helped me and no laughing at my "on the ground" part of the video 😆!

    I've been riding for 13 years, more than half my life. I've taken years of hunter/jumper AND dressage lessons, and not one instructor ever taught me how to sit the trot. I even thought I was doing it right, because no instructor ever told me otherwise, and that it was just supposed to be that jolting. After watching your video and practicing it on just a handful of rides, I feel relatively competent at sitting trot - not perfect, but lightyears better than before. You are an exceptional teacher, Josie. Thank you for doing what you do!

    Years ago an instructor had our horse club group learn belly dance hip movements, which happen to be the same movements in sit trot/western amble. It was easier for us pre-teen girls to get into our heads, and made the motion feel more natural.

    the visual representation helped me so much! i missed all our lessons on sitting tror and were now onto canter, adeguate spacing and control in canter (around other horses and on a circle) so i would feel quite weird asking about it now with all the other people getting it and it being almost 5 years since i started taking lessons

      and also a reason ive been struggling so much with it is because my techer, when i asked about it just said lean back more, which threw me off balance so much making it even harder to sit in the saddle.

    Wow, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. I recently restarted lessons for the first time in a decade, and while a lot of muscle memory is coming back, the sitting trot has been so difficult for me to nail. The ground visual was really helpful (I would suggest doing a closer shot though, and also doing a frontal view), and I think it's going to be very helpful to keep in mind during my next lesson.

    This is what we just started working on - with no reins and no stirrups on the lunge. It's so hard to get the correct rhythm and feel to be with the horse, not bouncing against. My instructor teaches it exactly like this, so it was wonderful to watch the video and help cement what it feels and looks like. Question: What exercises can you suggest to do at home to strengthen the muscles needed for a better sitting trot? Thank you for sharing this, very much appreciated! I've always watched the pros' belt buckles - it's especially interesting to watch on the really big moving horses! And yes, sitting is easier when the horse gives you a soft place to sit!

    My approach was to take my weight in the stirrups and sort of melt into the horse. Were I coaching this rider, I'd let the stirrups down one hole. Most riders two or more holes. No such thing as too long, just enough to rise. Watch top dressage, check out the latest dressage saddles, designed for an almost vertical thigh.

    Funny you talked about how the ankle must flex- the ONLY way I could sit trot in the beginning was with no stirrups, doing ankle circles- otherwise I would tense up and start gripping. But the ankle circles eventually got my focus off of gripping, AND helped me learn how to flex the ankle. It took a long time for me to be able to sit WITH stirrups, haha, but I got there!
    Greta videos, you are the best!

      @BasicHorseTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! You need to balance and not grip. It's a hard lesson to learn ... now I'm going to go out and see if I can circle my ankles without stirrups so thank you for the tip 😊.

    Really great Teacher and I've seen multiple videos but the way you actually explain each thing is exactly what I'm thinking every question I found you answered in great sequence. and use of the belt buckle as a visual aid is really great.

    How do you know what is the outside leg when the horse trots on an open field and in a straight line?

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! There is no inside or outside as such as they pertain to bend. When I am riding in long straight lines I just change diagonal regularly so I work both hind legs. 😊

    I would always sit more forward in order not to put my full weight on the horse ( I think in one of your vids you said it would hurt him/her), but I noticed when I do shift my weight back into a full seat I’m more stable and don’t bounce…so it’s confusing 😅

    Today was my fourth time riding a horse, as I am learning how to ride. My teachers tell me I have excellent balance on a horse and they suggested we try the trot today...so we tried it very briefly. I found myself bouncing! It felt very different than the walk. And I don't want to bounce so I came looking for information! 😀💖 No saddle yet - we are only using a riding pad. But on my next lesson I will see if I can try this, if we do the trot again. Today was also my second time using reins and I learned the emergency dismount too. 💖🐎💖

      Oh how exciting to be starting out riding … you have a wonderful adventure in front of you. Remember to always keep the horses welfare at the forefront and don’t take what people tell you as gospel. Question and think for yourself. I am excited for you. 😊

    I rode a horse last week that was forward going, rather reacting to the aids, but because it was the first time for me to ride it, I felt like it went too fast for me to go along with. The horse cantered in a rounded short-side, past C/L -don't recall the letter exactly, but I tried to steer her so even in canter, she got rounded in the corners, like with walk and trot. I had the movement in my wrist, far more, than in my arm, giving my best to to yank her in the mouth, (the bid looked a bit small, but what do I know, new student from outside), evaluating my ride, back then I'm thinking, that maybe I should have used my thighs and knees on the inside, to push her out where she belonged in that short side. I don't recall that I did so, and I am wondering and thinking, with the outside leg a bit behind the girth, if I want the horse to stay or go to the other side, would that even be possible? Your leg is further back to give the signal on cantering, and keep the horse going, but the upper part of the leg, could be controlling with the reins, the direction the horse is going in

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do use my thighs to help with "steering" the shoulders towards the inside if I need to and my inside thigh and calf to keep the horse to the outside. I hope that answers your question Marianne.

    Should we push our feet on the stirrups to pull our hip up? Cause i have no idea how you can move ur hip up when ur sitting on ur bum u need something to push on im not sure what it is as feet wouldn’t work on trotting without stirrups
