I feel like snakehead fishing is Maryland’s equivalent to Burmese python hunting in Florida. We as humans are the only ones who can effectively take out these monster invasives and help out our buddies the native predators. Great tips! I’ll have to pick up some of the right gear and give it a try myself. I’ve only ever seen snakehead splash swim in front of me when fishing or kayaking, which makes me want to catch one even more!
It’s definitely similar. I don’t think Snakehead are having the degree of impact that Burmese Pythons are in FL, but it’s true that the largest snakehead have very few natural predators outside of humans. Perhaps only Blue Cats and Flathead cats. They’re a blast to catch though and taste great, so good luck on the water Nick 🎣
Thanks for the advice. I've been trying to catch them for the past 3 years while kayak fishing and have not caught a single one. I'm using the same lures and locations you are describing but my tactics may have been all wrong. I will try it your way the next time I go out.
Good luck! If you haven’t seen it yet and plan to use frogs and mice lures, checkout the video below: th-cam.com/video/rU8CsJDKb-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=61Ff97SnvGdysB9N
After fishing hard for snakes on a Maryland river that’s loaded with grass I finally got one on a frog. Next month I’m moving my boat to an eastern shore creek that’s looks very promising in the back, tons of quiet shallow water with timber and reeds… but there is no submerged grasses. Should I switch from frogs to something else like a chatter bait or big Mepps?
Frogs should still work fairly well around those reeds, especially around matted, floating reeds. I’d also add some subsurface swim frogs or chatterbaits to your arsenal.
Def some good areas around there. Gunpowder river out of mariners point, around Jones road, Lower dam area at Loch Raven. Also made a video on how I find my spots: th-cam.com/video/FURLAhX_I6c/w-d-xo.html
I think tip 4 might be a game changer for me. I use 20lb braid on a med hev fast action, but I might up it to 30 after watching that one get away from you. Love the comdic movie clips! Thanks for the tips!
Switching to a minimum of 30 is def a strong recommendation to avoid the pain I’ve felt in the past 😏 Thanks for the kind words and for watching brother 🎣👊
These are excellent tips! To piggyback off of having the proper line, make sure your line doesn't have any nicks in it either. I found out the hard way after flying all the way to Thailand and losing my first giant snakehead due to broken line!
@@KambotroutFishing haha it was awful. it was already half day of no action up to that point and i thought i was about to skunk, but luckily, i got a 12lber a few hours after that.
Thanks for the tips. I’ve been fishing them in thick as mats area. You don’t even know they are there. Love to see a video on what to do when they are looking at you bait but not biting .

Thanks brother 👍 If you have the itch really bad and want to brave the cold and a possible skunk, hit the 2nd or 3rd day of a warming trend and target the afternoon 1-5 PM. Use 1-2 rods with large minnows 12”-30” under a float and fan cast a #3 or #4 Mepps spinner. No guarantee, but it’s your best shot for the winter. The best time though probably won’t be until mid-March depending on weather. Mid to late March is when the spring prespawn bite usually starts to heat up 👍
One of the best I’ve ever fished. It’s unfortunately had a lot more pressure since and isn’t what it used to be due to overharvest, but still solid water.
I also favor spinning reels for freshwater, last spring got the kast king speed demon pro bait caster & love it to the point, I set up a second one. No more wind knot's & tangles. This bait casting reel for some reason, I can use while other more expensive reels, just didn't work out in the past. Love all your video's brother! Counting down until it's warm enough, up here in NJ, still ice everywhere until April.
Thanks brother and thanks for the recommendation as well. I’ve added the speed demon to my short list of options 👍 I’ll let you know once it’s warm enough down here in MD in case you want to make the trip south 😜

Very helpful video. Thanks for the tips. As far as line are you using straight braid or are you adding a fluorocarbon leader. If so what kind testline leader are you using ?

@@briant8142 what kind of frog are you using? Sounds like you may have lost the weight that should be in the bottom of your frog. If so, that can lead to the frog being upside down. You may be able to fix this with silicone if so.

Thanks John and thanks for watching. The best time of year is debatable, but right now is a good time since the first spawn is wrapping up.
