    Great review! Recently rented the FX3, and was BLOWN away at the image quality. Very thoughtful video, and I love how you put it all together. Thanks for sharing!

    Always enjoy your posts Scott. Keep up the good work. I'm like you in that I'm really enjoying the body design on the FX3 - the button layout, the flippy, the tally lights, the xlr grip all add to my user experience. I dig it. Doesn't hurt that the image quality out of this little beast is pretty darn good too. Fun to use and makes pretty images. Winning.

      Thanks so much, James! Appreciate you stopping by. Yeah, it's hard to put into words, but it's just such a delightful little camera. It's not often a camera will sort of inspire me to pick it up and get filming. This camera also really deserves the title for pocket cinema camera. ha

    Very nice video on the FX3, Scott. You raised a good point about how the body has such a small form factor.
    You have some incredible B-Roll footage, I like your angled shots of the sunset at 0:40.
    Did you have it fixed at 12,800 ISO for this video? The dual ISO's so far apart is the thing I do not like about this camera for SLOG3. I see no point in going to lets say ISO 8000 when ISO 12,800 will look much cleaner.
    I was going to do a low light video on my A7SIII at the beach as well in SLOG3. I am wondering if having it locked between 12,800 and 25,600 ISO range would be ideal. I am going to have it in aperture priority mode so if it gets too bright in places, the shutter will go way up to compensate.
    I do not want it to go any lower than 12,800 to prevent unwanted noise.

      Thanks so much for your comment and question. And thank you for the very kind feedback.
      And I hear you. Although I like, the dual base ISO, it is kind of a pain that the other ISO's aren't great. I do use them in a pinch though. For the beach video I was there for about an hour with the sun quickly setting. For the first half-hour, I shot 640. I may have bumped it up a little to a non-base ISO, but to be honest I don't remember. i likely didn't.
      I never went above 12,800. Once the sun fully set I packed up, so I didn't see how it would look with the sun fully gone. I'd imagine at that point 12,80o0 would have to be as low as you go. If you're going to be there past sunset having it locked between 12,800 and 25,600 ISO makes sense to me.
      i was surprised how far 640 carried it though. It wasn't util the sun dropped beneath the ocean horizon that I had to switch. And even then, you can see from the ungraded footage that I had it 1 or 2 stops over exposed so I could bring it down for those clean shadows and smooth highlight roll-off.
      Hopefully, this is helpful? :)

      @@ScottJeschke Yeah that is helpful. I am pretty happy you gave some reassurance about setting an ISO range between 12,800 to 25,600.
      It is pretty cool you could get a lot out of 640 ISO too. I also heard overexposing SLOG3 footage by around 1 stop is ideal.
      I would greatly appreciate if you browse one of my videos btw. You seem to really know your stuff and I am just a newbie lol.

    • @ScottJeschke
      @ScottJeschke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VeeTravels For sure! I'd rec staying on 12,800 as long as you can. And if you can get a good exposure at 640, even better!
      Yeah, it's nice w the FX3 and I'm assuming the A7S III it feels like the overexposing is a bit more flexible than it used to be (ie. w 8 bit). So even if you expose one stop over or even at 0:0, usually you can still get decent image. I try to expose between 1:0 and 2:0. Push and pull in post. Unless I have an external monitor, where I'll use false color and expose to middle gray.
      And would love to check out your work! hope to see you around the channel more :)

    I have the Sony A7SIII & definitely purchasing this as my A cam. Both have great quality but based off reviews and videos I do see the FX3 does have a bit more of a cinematic feel. It may just be me but I see the small difference

    • @ScottJeschke

      You'll love it! I don't know how different it is internally from the A7S3. I've heard many times it's identical. I used the A7S3 on a short, but haven't directly compared them so I'm just not sure. The body is wonderful though. Definitely feels better for shooting video.

    So basically, FX3 and A7III have the same features? I'm still looking forward to A7IV.

    • @ScottJeschke
      @ScottJeschke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Gabe, no, the A7III is the older version of the A7IV. It's my previous camera that I now use as a B-Cam. Still a great camera, but it lacks 10 Bit 422 internal and external, flipout screen and a lot of other amazing new features. The A7 IV has most of those and more. So the value is absolutely amazing. Especially as a first camera. The FX3 and the A7S III (Not the A7III) have essentially the same internals. Same codecs, same menus, same image. The FX3 body however, is more geared toward video. So it has the top handle, mounting points, tally lights, customizable buttons, and no Electronic Viewfinder (eyepiece) the A7S III has more of a traditional photo body with a viewfinder but none of those external features that I mentioned about the FX3. So it comes down to how much hybrid photo/ video people wanted in a camera. I rarely take photos and wanted a camera that would impress clients, so the FX3 was the right choice for me. If I were buying on a tighter budget, I'd go w the A7IV no question. DSLR Video shooter does a great comparison of the A7S III and the A7 IV. If I were starting out today, I'd go w an A74 if I could afford one. Hope this is helpful :)

    Can I ask you what WB do you have on the camera and the light at 07.51. Looks like a Christopher Nolan interior shot!

    • @ScottJeschke
      @ScottJeschke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! What an amazing compliment. I wish I remembered. I want to say it was 3200 k, because I shot something else at that temp earlier that night. Only other possibility would be 2900k, but 3200 is most likely, because I like my tungsten scenes a little bit warmer. also warmed it up a bit in the mids with color wheels.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. The color came out great there.
      The light must have been crazy warm if your camera WB was 3200.
      Tungsten being at 2700 would have been a lot closer to neutral skin color with camera balance at 3200, no?
      And with that light, is it a daylight with an orange gel?

    • @ScottJeschke
      @ScottJeschke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSteveKinney thanks, Steve! So the lights were 2700 k which puts the camera at 3200k, which is slightly warmer than neutral. But, the LUT that I made/used is a bit warmer in the mids I believe, and I think I pushed it a little in post toward a warmer look as well. I think the light was set to 2700k (it's bi-color) it has a piece of white paper clamped on as a little bounce :)

      @@ScottJeschke ahhhhh.
      Okay. That makes a ton of sense. That extra bit depth of the camera makes all the difference in the world.
      Doing that method on a 8-bit doesn’t work out the same. Usually looks funky.
      Great work!

    Greetings, I searched for a green screen sample video about Fx3 and could not find it. Have you tried a green screen study? I'm wondering how the keying performance is.

    • @ScottJeschke
      @ScottJeschke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may have to make one :) Overall though, I expect the performance is very good with the internal 10 Bit 422, as well as the pro res raw output at 16Bit. Lots of good color info to work with
