This is a man who is mourning the unexpected death of his woman. The line of cars painted black are limos. When he sees girls dressed up in summer clothes it reminds him of his girlfriend and he has to look away. Like a newborn baby, death happens every day, etc.
This song came out while I was in High School and it took me a few listens to figure out the meaning. I remember having to explain this to a friend who didn't know the dark meaning. I think you would have eventually figured it out after listening it to it a few more times.

@@steveullrich7737 - Yeah, I've found that many songs from the 60s are like that....Superficially they sound more upbeat or cheerful, or like something you could dance to, but when you really listen to the lyrics and grasp them, you realize they're actually quite dark!

The meaning is basic and universal. His wife or girlfriend has died and he is so miserable that he can't stand to see anything happy or colorful. It feels just like this when you're consumed with grief - anything cheerful or beautiful just makes it hurt more.
losing someone or something that you hold dearest is like losing the sun to your life, everything just turned black without any light. You feel like there's no way out and anything different will just hurts you more so you don't want to see nor hear them.
and the worst thing is, this send you deeper and deeper into the dark. An endless spiral of depression and grief... until someone hold your hand, pulled you back up, force you to face the truth, and at the same time kept holding you... Showing that there's still light in your life, someone who still cares about you and you can care about. Sad thing is, not everyone have that one person...

Daniel you show a lot of maturity for your 16 years, I have just one recommendation for listening to music from the past, try to give a listen to the music in a timeline. It will show how much it changes (Beatles and Rolling Stones especially). Stones, listen to Satisfaction, Under My Thumb, Get off of My Cloud, and She's a Rainbow...then you'll get into the mid and later 60's. I could go on but I think you'll do fine. (This song is killer).
I totally agree, Dan..I try to explain that to younger audiences...It's not that you can't appreciate them. It's just so much better when you see how quickly they progressed..It's almost hard to believe.....I grew up with all this stuff..It's difficult to really appreciate the Stones and the Beatles if you hadn't (or don't) do it in chronological order. That's when you really see their true genius.

Couldn’t agree more. The sixties started with chart acts like Acker Bilk & Kenny Ball and 10 years later we had Jimmy Hendrix. The journey from Trad Jazz (as an example) to Prog Rock a la King Crimson, Pink Floyd is what we all find endlessly fascinating about the sixties. Add into that the war in Vietnam, the moon landings, hippie culture and you have all the ingredients for edgy, catchy, relevant, timeless songs and indeed you weren’t disappointed.
This song was part of my immediate post-divorce playlist. I was both angry and depressed, and I liked the idea of replacing all the colors I saw with black, so my surroundings would match my insides. Still not exactly happy about the divorce, but years of reflection have shown me that, if she'd stayed, things would've gotten much, much worse. So . . . thanks, Barb, it turns out you did me a big favor, and I no longer have to curse your name with every breath. Yay ! !
I clearly remember the first time I heard "Paint It Black" (or, as it was called on my copy of the single, "Paint It, Black"). It was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, at the end of my second-grade year (1966). My school had a big end-of-year carnival, and instead of the usual calliope music, the merry-go-round had a DJ playing the hits of the day. This guy was a bit harder-edged than they were expecting, he also played The Kinks' "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and The Yardbirds' "Heart Full Of Soul", among others. I'd just won a huge cupcake in the ring-toss, and while I was eating it, "Paint It Black" played. It took a lot of years for me to stop associating Mick Jagger with chocolate frosting.

The Stones, between 1968 to 1973, maybe had the best 4 consecutive albums in history - there’s a reason they are one of the best ever - do Sympathy For The Devil and Gimme Shelter next - their rabbit hole is endless.

It is about loss,death and anger. When I hear it, it reminds me of losing friends during them Vietnam War, not just from death of body, but some lost themselves over there.

Reaction videos work best when you are basically sitting down with a "virtual" friend and he (Daniel) is hearing one of your favorite songs for the first time. It's like taking a friend to Disneyland and it is his first time there, and you are seeing it as if for the first time, thru their eyes.

So many good Rolling Stones songs. Anyone who's ever had a broken heart can relate to this one. It's true that love is a double edged sword. It can either be the greatest feeling in the world or the most painful feeling in the world. There's nothing like finding your one true love only to find she doesn't feel the same and leaves you for her true love. Then her true love is in love with someone else. I think most people get their hearts broken at least once in life. And some never get over it. But if you're really lucky you may find that one true love who loves you as much as you love her and that's a taste of heaven on earth.

Depression takes on many forms. Some turn to alcohol, some turn to drugs, some turn to overeating, and some just want to paint their house black...... might be the best way to handle it.
A celebration of darkness that we all experience at one time or another.
There was a Vietnam era tv show in the 80s called "Tour of Duty" that used this song for the opening credits. I was a lifelong Beatles fan (i was only like 11, but i started on my obsessions early) so this was my first intro to the Stones. It's such heavy rock, but those elements of spanish/andalusian guitar and the tabla toward the end give it such an exotic spice/flair. They were friends with the Beatles and hung out together socially sometimes, and the music of that era mingles in so many 'ethnic' musical colourations, it makes them always refreshing and pleasurable to hear. (Plus it's just badass.) :)

I remember seeing them perform this on the Ed Sullivan show I think. Brian Jones was sitting cross-legged playing the sitar. This was the start of their brief flirtation with psychedelia, it ended after their 1967 album "Their Satanic Majesties Request". They were less adventurous once they fired Brian Jones and he died not too long after.

I am always a bit surprised when the younger generation have such a difficult time with the lyrics... Unfortunately, people die, animals die, it happens all the time in this unforgiving world......Life is a vicious circle.....Once you recover from one tragedy another one happens...... Kudos to the Magnificent Stones to take on this subject and so many other issues...They sacrificed many record sales for not being as commercial as many other bands (if u know what I mean). Many stations refused to play this, and "Sympathy Devil", even "Spend night together.". Now the lyrics are spot on....Let's take a few of them on and no one knows exactly as the Stones have always been a bit mysterious about many of their stellar lyrics.......First, He cannot look at summer girls right now... he would rather just turn his head for now..., Flowers and dead loved ones do not come back..that is for sure.......Death is as common as a new born baby....Who has not felt like FADING AWAY...you bet it would be very easy to fade away while in that mood......Who does not want a deeper blue sea...he is convinced will never see again... The song ends a bit positive in that the settin sun will allow him to finally recover somewhat by morning as he will laugh with his love...(just amazing)..and a bit of compassion as he does not want anyone else to feel this way..NOW FINALLY...THE RED DOOR... In an interview once Mick mentioned he is a big fan of old literature, philosophy, and even a bit of religion...In old mid evil Europe a RED DOOR was considered to have a power to fend off all evil spirits...in this case maybe he just does not care ...he no longer fears evil as what could be worse than what he is going through right now...THE BOTTOM LINE ...No one knows for sure...but one thing is clear to me...The Stones total catalogue has SO MANY ABSOLUTE masterpieces that stand in history...... for all those who may not be aware just start at 1962 discography and go forward and you will probably be amazed at the talent....Finally, don't forget the Stones were only about 22 years old at that time this and Satisfaction were written...The next 10 years contained absolute artistry...

I’m not a huge Stones fan, the famous story is they went to see the Beatles and said hey if they can do it so can we. I think John and Paul wrote I Wanna Be Your Man for them. But Keith’s Satisfaction lick is to this day awesome , another Chuck Berry lick takeoff.

It’s odd that generally people see the Stones as the “tougher” of the two bands. I just read somewhere, can’t recall where, that the Beatles came together as a group of working-class boys on the streets of scrappy Liverpool, whereas the Stones were relatively well off boys who met in college.

I can't believe they never fixed that one error. He wants to see the sun "blotted out from the sky" -- not "flying high in the sky"! Such an odd error too!
The wrong line is given as "Don't wanna see the sun flying high in the sky". That makes perfect sense, but it's not what he sings. Is it perhaps an earlier version of the lyric? Maybe it was even printed that way in the sleeve notes, or something.

Why? Because if you blotted out the sun, EVERYTHING would be black, just the way he wants it right now.
Also, the only other times people use the word "blotted" is when they are referring to the *black* bars that censor things (classified documents, for example) or *black* ink obscuring something on a page (intentionally or not).

For those who grew up with the Rolling Stones they are the best rock and roll band in the world, peerless and unsurpassed. This generation is realising that their grandads were cool dudes.

back in the day we listened to this on an album, played on a good stereo system, there were no lyric videos. You listened for enjoyment, not to get hung up on what it means, and taking more from the beauty of the performance. You didn't mention the great guitar work. I'm glad you liked the tune. There are many interpretations of this song, Mick Jaggar quoted, some people see what was happening at the time the Vietnam War, losing loved ones, or there was a rumor it was about a girlfriend of his who was very sick, but didn't die, but this has never been confirmed. So you can interpret anyway you want. The words are self explanary with whatever meaning connects to you.

I listen to this band every day. I was about 5 yrs old when this came out, was a 70s teen, but the 60s music was THE best (70s too). Was kind of downhill from there.

FYI it's common for people in remorse to become angry - how could the world do this, how could their love leave them, all that time and effort, now so alone and so hurting with no explanations - Why?? Many years ago asked to massage this guy - seemed legit - but surprised to find anger boiling off of him. He didn't say a word. After I was told by friends his love had committed suicide the month before, without even leaving a note right out of the blue.
Yet I witnessed someone slowly dying who held their partner up and was the strong one; she had had all the treatment but it was not enough the big C was killing her. So her reaction was to pour love into the man she was leaving behind - there was nothing he could do but watch. Very odd these humans, can't make this stuff up.
More songs... agree go timewise; there is a fashion which started simple catchy and grew complex baroque - which you have heard. Got to the point by mid 70's that anyone not within spitting distance of being a musical genius was limited (almost non-commercial or wanted). Backlash - Punk. Hm. Only 10,000 suggestions.
An alternative 70's sound which was beautiful and just about rock - the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Try Rockaria. Punk wise? Sex Pistols - but that movement burnt out. Hm. Blondie or The Pretenders decent post-punk bands. Where to go from there? Simple Minds, Tears for Fears. The Beloved. Dip in and out of their work; you're going to spend a few years on this.
Perhaps a timeline would help.
My FAVORITE Stones song by a country mile. In a semi related note you should react to the highest audio quality version possible of my favorite Aerosmith song ‘Janie’s Got a Gun’. And my favorite Michael Jackson song is Smooth Criminal... I swear I’ve never murdered anyone.

I was widowed, too, and I felt much as that woman does. I had no kids to hold onto. I was so ANGRY! Sometimes I still am. Our anniversary is agony. Since Covid-19 came, I think of the widows and orphans of all 201,000, and the empathy overwhelms me. Right now, I’m thinking of Brionna Taylor’s loved ones, and all I feel is the anger. Not a good day today, for me.
Play “Hey Jude” by The Beatles. It soothes my troubled soul.
I always sang "Blotted out from the Sky", I don't know if thats the real lyric but it sounds better than this version.
Try to find a performance video of the early Stones. Mick was electric. There were people who liked the Beatles but others liked the grittier, sexier and more "dangerous" Stones. It was the subject of many arguments.
This was a scream against the Vietnam war and racial hatred. To the adults at the time, this proved how degenerate we were.

I don't know, but there are days when everything seems painted black.
Never really got into the Stones, they were a bit pop rock sounding to me. The other two songs that I like by them are Bitch and Brown Sugar. This particular tune is featured at the end of two of my favorite movies...Full Metal Jacket and The Devil's Advocate.

this one is a songs where I have to say "The cover of this song performed by Eric Burdon & The Animals respectively later Eric Burdon & War is way better than the original of the Stones."..I´m aware that sounds now "hell of blasphemic" because we are talking about a Rolling Stones song..but nevertheless it´s true in that sense that the Stones´ version is performed like a Popsong but Burdon´s version is a deep down journey into the essence of the lyrics musically performed way more intense...and I´m by far not alone with this oppinion.

Its in your face: "I see a line of cars and they're all painted black; with flowers and my love both never to come back". Ummmm what could that be referring to?????? jeez. A funeral!!!! His girlfriend died. He's in grief and all he wants to see is black (to match his mood). A very simple song.
