How to remove/delete factory roof rack from Gen 5 Explorer

- I got tired of the factory roof rack trim pieces popping off all the time- decided I would go with a slick top look. This video shows you how to remove the rack, seal the holes, install the trim and get a near factory look of a slicktop for a fraction of the cost.

LOL! Boy, would I love to toss mine in the front yard of the dude at Ford who designed this debacle. Not to mention they cannot come up with a reliable fix. Just made appointment #10 at my Ford dealership for this repair. Didn't even realize your idea was an option. Strongly considering it. Appreciate the vid.
Yeah it's a horrible design, unless you actually have a need for the rack I'd remove it.. Looks better and it won't drive you crazy every time you notice the cover has popped off yet again
Do It yourself is the only option. No dealer or shop cares about your car. They just want your money.
Ford has a recall to address the problem with the rails. Its business and would never expect a manufacturer or dealer to care about my car.
That looks sharp! I have 2018 Sport and recently replaced the trim for the second time. It's already starting to come out. Horrific design. This looks like a better alternative instead of the trim popping off again. Thanks for sharing!

I have an 02 Explorer and need to take the rails off - needed to see this vid. I think i got leaking into the car through the bolt holes - if it rains, it's like a rain forest in the car so I need the runners gone - glad i found your video

Never used it and the poor design caused it to fall apart. Hence the removal. Had the substandard Ford Engineer done his job correctly the rack would still be on the vehicle.

this was an excellent video and a great solution to the problem. I like that you used the front trim piece. On the police version piece you can see the mount holes, on yours its clean. well done
Thank you! I am really happy how it came out, it's held up great, been through a few car washes, no issues with it at all. I think the rig looks so much cleaner without that stupid rack.

The 16' kit was enough to do the entire rig, had some left over.
Great narration, my only advice is to watch the whole video before starting, I decided to drink 6 beers and then carve out the whole track and prep it like it was going to be on PBS American Restoration. that being said, I had a good excuse to not sit at dinner with my teenage kids.

Just did my 2017 Sport today. Tried to Gorilla Glue it last year and it didn’t last. These things are garbage. This gives it a much cleaner look. Thanks for the video!!!

Half way through mine. Weather stripping tomorrow. Only had one problem with one of the set screws. Used 20lb dumbbells to hold the front window weather piece. Hope I used enough sealer on it. Looks a lot better than having those ugly roof rack rails.
I did this and it worked perfectly as described. I used pancake allen screws instead of set screws though.

Great video thank you . I wanted to remove the rails on my SUV because they look stupid and I would never put anything on top of my vehicle and damage the roof like the idiot did that had this car. Anyway now I know it's not going to be that big of a deal to do thanks to your video ,and I will make sure I have the most important thing to have to do the job ,a few cold beers 🍺👍

Same problem here. I hadn't seen this vid though...and did almost the exact same thing. What I did different was I was able to get the police front trim super cheap from a dealer
That's cool, if I was going to do it again I would probably try to find that front peice. My approach has held up very well- multiple car washes and no issues.

Have you had any issues with those Amazon moldings peeling off?
None at all, survives the crazy Southern heat and humidity, carwashes and in the winter sub 20F.

Those are factory 2019 Ford Sport rims.
I have a 2014 Ford police interceptor utility and from factory they have the OEM roof rack deleted. Maybe you should consider finding someone parting out a 2012-2016 Ford police interceptor utility and buy the roof rail trim? It also looks more sporty without the roof rack brackets.
Well for 36 bucks this was a easy solution for me. I really like the clean look without that stupid rack.

Yeah some folks glue it and have no issues. I think it looks better without.
Any leaks from the Amazon moldings?
No issues at all after 3 years. Still looks like the day I did the installation and I'm glad I did it- much cleaner looking.
If I want to just glue my racks, what glue do you recommend?
Well if you want to go that route I would use Gorilla glue, apply it to both sides, use painters tape to hold the piece down while it sets. It will probably never come off after that!
What did you do exactly for the front pieces cause when I put it on it leaked water thru for me there is a bolt under it did with a plastic that holds the front piece did u keep that normal also?

I didn't remove the front piece, I cut it where it met up with the roof rails, then glued it down to secure it. 4 years later still no leaks or issues.

How is the molding holding up? I just ordered everything you used and I am getting ready to remove those pos racks.
It looks great- no issues at all in the Tennessee heat and a few runs through the carwash. No issues at all. You will not regret it- makes it a much cleaner looking SUV.
@@MULTIPLESHOTSFIRED I live in Florida so I am used to the heat. Did you add anything to the double sided tape to hold it down or just the silicone on the screws and placed the molding over it? I can't wait to see how it comes out.
@@Mike-wx2vv I just let the silicone setup, then wiped down the entire area with alcohol, and installed the trim. It is very strong tape, it's not going anywhere!

Where can you find the police interceptor molding at cant find it anywhere for sale
Ford parts I Beleive sells them as trim mouldings "less roof rack"

I priced the moldings today at 240.00 each, yes you will need two. The part number is 51728B

That's actually just the stock antenna on a 2019 Sport.

I have 3 toddlers I wanna keep safe. I have a 2018 black explorer that looks like a cop car, especially with no front license plate and black rims. I wanna do this to my roof racks, only under cover stateys in PA run roof racks. Ten miles in N.Y. where I work all cop and sheriff vehicles have no roof racks. When I drive my car, I notice people slow down and I always see their eyes and their not texting lol
Yeah mine gets the same reaction, no front plate, slicktop, blacked out with no emblems does give it "the look". Honestly thinking of getting some different rims or something to make it look less cop like.

Didn't notice any difference in noise . Looks a lot better.
So I just got a mailer from Ford where they will replace these for free. Already removed my rack...but at least someone noticed it...many years later....

I had mine replaced due to the recall on them. Guess what, they both fell off in traffic on the freeway somewhere and now I can replace them myself because of this fine video!!!

I think you'll be happy with the look- I think it looks a lot cleaner without it. Can't believe someone at Ford approved that design.

Awesome job. Dealing with the same thing. 2017. Ordered brand new. Has been "fixed" at dealer 4 times. This last time they replaced the whole thing and not just the clips. Didn't seal it properly and now I am dealing with getting the whole interior roof, floor carpet, etc replaced because I have a wet interior now. This is a sad sack of shit design from Ford and it is disgusting. There is another tsb on it again. Dealing with an incompetent dealership does not help as well.
Sorry to hear about your experience. Ford dropped the ball with this design. Last time I had to take mine in the service advisor mentioned the recall to fix the rack- I told him I fixed it myself and had no confidence in whatever their fix was.

There is a guy Ford Boss Me on TH-cam that is a master mechanic at a Ford dealership. He talks about this very issue and Fords fix for it
The best solution is to remove it. Terrible design and frankly the rig looks better without that tacky rack system.
