Ford Explorer 5th Gen DIY Roof Rack/Rail Removal Project - Forget the Recall

- This is a short video on my DIY roof rack/rail removal project. It takes two days total, but the removal of the roof rack/rail itself takes approximately an hour and half to two hours, which includes the cleaning and taping. Mine took longer because of the pictures throughout the project. I always take pictures and/or videos on every project, in the event I remove the mod. I did not think I would make a video, but someone asked how I did it, so I decided to make a video.
Supplies used are as follows:
1) Dawn Enterprise INC., automotive molding. 1" wide 18' long with 3M tape. Product# ES12618-PK. Purchased in Amazon.
2) 3M Automotive Performance Masking Tape. Purchased on Amazon.
3) 10 pack of M6 x 1.0 x 12mm set screws. Purchased on Amazon. These can be purchased at Home Depot and/or Lowes. IMO, you could go longer than 12mm, just remember that the holes go all the way through to the headliner inside your Explorer, so you do NOT want too long of a set screw.
4) Permatex Adhesive Sealant Clear. Purchased on Amazon. You could use black or any other color adhesive comes in, as you will not be seeing this after you are done. Also can be purchased just about everywhere. Do NOT be conservative applying this product, you do NOT want any water leaks.
5) DB5Z-7851728AA and DB5Z-785179-AA (left and right front Interceptor roof trim pieces). Purchased at FORD OEM PARTS.com. Due to Covid pricing, these are approximately $74+ each. Do you actually need this to complete your project, NO. But then you reuse your original front trim pieces and cut them. My way makes it to where you can reinstall your roof rails, if needed.
EcoHell is a 2018 Ford Explorer Sport, heavily modded with Livernois Motorsports Stage 2+ Power Package (Tune, CAI, downpipe, thermostat, plugs, 3 bar sensor, H&R Springs), JLT Oil Separator, 20x10.5 Niche Vosso wheels with 295/45s, PowerStop cross drilled/slotted rotors w/ceramic pads, ForScan modded, AGM Battery & Singer High Output Alternator, NMO Mount antenna for RF radio, Pedal Commander, 4DTech Motion Unlock unit and Roof Rail delete.

Glad it worked out for you. If you use the Police Interceptor trim pieces like i did, you can always put the original pieces back on or provide it to the person you sell your vehicle too. Good option when selling. Stay Safe!

Thank you. I had my roof rails repaired under recall and they also came off. Just filed a complaint with National Highway Safety Traffic Administration. Ford dealer did a shit job on recall repair.
I am a member on three different forums and 2 FB groups and hear the nightmare stories like yours. If you do not need the roof rails, get two days free and get to work...LOL. No more worries and you get to stay away from the dealership.

Thanks for the video man. Your explorer is a beastttt! Do you think giving the set screws adhesive 24 hours to cure is really important before putting on the trim? Thanks again
Sorry for the late response..haven't checked out my videos in months. Yes to your question. Without it, the set screw could vibrate and screw further in. The holes lead into the interior. If the trim piece is not secured over the set screw(s) you may have water leaks. Better to overkill.
Would it be okay to remove the roof rack and then leave it as be? Or do I have to fill in the space with the molding?
Technically, I do not believe you have to put any molding down, BUT you will have to plug the holes. If not, you will receive free showers from mother nature and get a free interior wash when washing your car.
Where did you get the interceptor roof trim? I see so many different thing's and different prices. I don't want to buy the wrong thing

*i feel rack roof making air noise and thinking to remove it but i dont sure if the noise coming from rack roof or from window*
Sorry for the late response, but being a gambling man and there being a recall on the roof rail, my money is the shitty roof rails is making the noise. These rails have failed many others to include me.

Had the recall done, and the piece flew off almost a year to the date... dealer refused to honor the work.
After reading nightmare stories regarding the piece(s) flying off and the dealer handling the recall, it made my decision to remove them easier. I love that I do not have to worry about any pieces flying off and the look.
