How to Remove Center Console Explorer w/details

- This simple video shows with details how to remove the Center Console on your Fifth Generation ( 2011, 2012, 2013 etc... ) Ford Explorer.
This is made to help you access the cup holders, terrain control switch, center compartment (glove) box.
Other videos show a lot of things to be removed, but I've discovered an easy way. I also give you detail information on what exactly you are taking apart so you know which way to pull.

SOOOO much better than another video. The other video explains you have to remove the shifter from the "Handle". No idea that the whoel shifter surround came out as one piece.

Awesome video!!! We had a microusb cable that somehow got stuck through the hinge groove in the frontmost compartment and try as we might, it would not come back out. With this video, and 20 minutes later, wire removed. Only issue we had was the boot clips....every time we got two undone and moved to another, the previous would snap back in...eventually we won. 2016 Ford Explorer Limited here and the video worked like a charm. Oh, chock the wheels. I thought my driveway was level but my truck rolled 5 feet backwards without me realizing it...oops.
Oh wow...didn't think about that safety consideration...
I did mine on the street which was level.

I was actually looking for a video of how to replace a burned out light bulb for the shifter indicator. I'm surprised you didn't show that when you had it all apart. I have a 2016 Ford Explorer and the center console looks the same, so I assume the procedure is the same except for unscrewing the bulb indicator box?

Thanks for the vid. My wife’s shifter boot has come loose. Not sure if those tabs are all broken or just need to be snapped back into place. I’ll look at it this weekend. Not sure if I have to replace it how to get the shift knob off but I’ll figure it out. Thanks again.
Ok just fixed it. Nothing broken just put all the shifter boot tabs back in place. Could not get the upper left console tab back in for the life of me so I broke it off 😂 . Console doesn’t stick out there at all so it looks fine. Thanks again for the video.

This tutorial is awesome!!! However, is there any other way to lift the console as my car is not shifting into gear? I accidentally fired a round into my cupholder and now my car will not shift into gear. I've managed to get the back of the console lifted and Im sure Ive did some damage under there as I can see shards of plastic....HELP!

Yes, not sure if the HVAC will work. if it has a 110 plug in back there is a box that is under the dash behind glove box. If it's a regular cigarette lighter use an adapter to convert it to USB.
Also the newer ones they stole the lights for PRNDS, my 19 is missing that light up feature if you manage to find a super duper new one.

quick question...
do you need to remove the shifter assembly...meaning the whole thing. Or did you just need to replace just the knob?
if it is just the knob. In the front of the shifter (towards the compartment) there is a screw at the bottom of the shift knob base that need to be removed. This will allow the knob to move out, but you will find that it may be attacked with wires and a clip. If so, just remove the wired coupler and the shifter knob can be slid up and off the shaft.
if you are needing to remove the whole shifter...simply take a look at the assembly from the top and all sides, you will discover how it attaches to the vehicle and to the individual electrical and mechanical cables etc. You will be able to figure it out, i have faith in you!

Can the plastic piece that has the letters P DR etc be changed?
I have the same question. I have been looking for a 2016 trim but from what I see nothing. They do sell the entire middle console for 400 bucks used and from the pictures it looks loke its part of it and it isnt clipped. The car wash gave me air fresheners and left them hanging on the shift knob. Now my gear letters are all messed up because the air freshener and the heat started making it peel off.
