Forgot about the park detector switch. Ford wanted $900 to replace the shift column, but now offer a switch replacement. No Park switch, no key fob start. And, the biggest problem of all, the internal water pump that will destroy the vehicle when the bearing goes.
I have a 2013 Ford Explorer with over 460,000 miles on it. I purchased it as a family hauler with about 60,000 miles on it. I unintentionally had to use it as a courier vehicle for 97% of those miles. I haven't changed any major parts or had any major parts failures!?!?! I must have one of the best built fords on the planet!

Everyone has these common problems with their Explorer, but if you go into a dealership they act like they have no clue what you’re taking about. Great video and should be required at the next Ford training event.
2018 I just reached 100.000 today, - Water pump had a very small leak - the Infotainment processor went bad - rear wheel hub started making noise I still got warranty on the vehicle so I got everything changed fast, tbh the infotainment processor was a little pricey aside from that I didn’t had any major problems with the vehicle, I’d definitely recommend it, amazing vehicle for the money.
I'm speechless! I've been having the issue with the wrench. So irritating. I'm putting my shoes on right now to go inspect the throttle bottle. Great great tip. 🙏

I wish you would have mentioned the water pump issue possibly causing a total engine failure or the PTU unit for the vehicles equipped with AWD! Those are the 2 that should ALWAYS be mentioned!
Ray McIntire frequently change PTU fluid as it bakes in heat behind the exhaust tucked up in the engine, I change mine on both my explorers every 30k miles it’s only about a quart of fluid in there. If you do that you’re fine. I’ve had no issues
Also keep up on oil changes and don’t let you’re coolant age too much and flush that out you’re fine, a lot of vehicle problems are caused by the owners not properly caring for their cars. Just changing the oil and putting gas in it is not enough if you plan on keeping it for over 100k miles
I maintain a fleet of these,100+ units, they are car, they all have problems, vics were easier to fix, it those have been out of production for almost 10 years, this is what we have for a replacement, may as well embrace it, because all of them have issues.
All cars come with there own problems my family runs a used car lot and every vehicle is know for there problems. Parts age and have to be replaced regardless of the vehicle, I have a 2013 ford explorer and I love it was less problems then my previous suv a gmc acadia i had a two page list of issues, I only had 2 issues with my explorer my husband is a mechanic and fixed it in a day
I don't understand why Ford couldn't design a new motor mount to allow the use of the 3.5 with the external water pump like the one in the f150. I looked into trying to retrofit those pieces onto the 3.5 in my Taurus but the water passages are cast differently in the front of the block :(

i own 2013 with 279k miles, the only thing i changed in the engine bay was the water pump and that was a long time ago, never had troubles withe engine or transmission till now...

The door panel fabric tends to delaminate from the substrate as well. Not a very hard fix, but a very unnecessary problem to have. Ours started to delaminate at about 60,000 miles.

Another problem you forgot was the actuator that controls the vents the defrost distribution. It's located under the dash in a crazy bad spot. You can change them by going underneath and around the steering colum, but the book states taking the dash out to replace a 25 dollar part plus 12 to 1500 dollars. Very common problems for explorers have sticking on vent and defrost not working. I bet I've repaired 10 of these things from year 2012 to 2018 or so. Insane!
I have a 2011 Explorer XLT. only 78k miles on it now all hell is breaking loose.Thanks Ford!! Have to replace the sync system APIM. and the fuel sensor. Both big $$$$ fixes. Get into those.
I had a 2012 Explorer XLT with the 3.5L V6 engine. At about 200k miles the water pump started leaking. This is internally in the engine and runs off of the timing chain. A very expensive fix to say the least. Luckily no coolant had gotten into the oil.
Rear brakes are a constant issue on these. Had a 2013 & 2018 and both needed rear pads within the first 20k. If you live in the rust belt you need to clean and adjust all the brakes every 6 months or so due to the design of the calipers as well.
I'm at 74,200 on my 2015 with all original brakes. The dealership said it's time to start watching them at the last service because they're starting to get close. Actually getting ready to replace the vehicle, so may never have to do it.
You missed quite a few. PTU, the transfer case bricks itself after the fluid leaks out or turns into mud. Electric power steering, yeah its very expensive for a new rack. VVT solenoids, they stick causing cam/crank correlation codes. Front lower rear control arm bushings. They get all sloppy and the car is all over the road. Cat converters, throw a P0420/p0430 and are garbage. Police models have an extended warranty on this. Rear wheel bearings, they get noisy and fuse themselves to the spindle due to aluminum to steel dissimilar metal corrosion. Front Upper strut bearings, get all creeky.
Some things not mentioned....the transmission may slip at initial take off, but when it catches.....wow what a jolt you get!! Also, the lower engine mount that attaches from the transmission to the body.. .those crack at around every 60,000 miles. If not replaced in time, the twisting engine can Crack the flexible exhaust can
good catch i have 2013 limited explorer ( 126K ) i changed the flexible exhaust conduit because of the Torque strut mount failure. i feel a vibration when accelerating
Carbon Monoxide problem because of Exhaust Factory holes its have more Water holes i closed all Exhaust holes in my car after then the Smell is disappeared i,am very happy
My spouse has an 18 Sport and it’s had replacements of times that concern me. 1. Both turbos replaced at 29K miles. (I had to drive behind the explorer with a mechanic to show him the smoke coming out) 2. Transmission was clunking at low speed. It was the transmission mount. 3. Rough idle at times, Dealer cannot duplicate this. Overall worried about long term ownership. We shall see
I have a 2013 Limited with 145,000 miles and two problems I have with this car is, one, the hood paint peeling off and the second is the head lights. They are HID lights and to replace them you have to take the whole front of the car off to get to the light assembly. I am replacing them with LED lights instead. This is my fourth explorer and on the other three I traded them in after 300,000 miles. Good rigs but, like any vehicle there will be repairs. As far as the paint on the hood I feel Ford should take care of that problem seeing how there are so many explorers on the road with this problem.
Also the high pitched sound that can be heard in 2018 5th gens equipped with the home power outlet. That was so annoying to deal with, pulled the fuse until I was able to get to the dealer. Also had the hood and panel near the gas tank paint bubble, 1 month in a 2020 loaner for them to order hood and repaint nigh the hood and that panel. Ended up trading it in for the 2020 after falling in love with it over the 30 days.
@4:07 - complains door is ajar leaving the dome light on, doesn't notice that the Explorer he's looking at is the police model - and those dome lights are NOT wired into switched power. Also doesn't mention about the PTU grenading due to its location above the exhaust manifold (less of an issue on turbo models due to forced circulation cooling), or the cat-headers cracking due to garbage design work by Ford.
My wife owns a 2014 limited, 219k miles, had the toe links and rear lid seal done on a recall, replaced the battery twice, brakes and rotors 3 times, accessory belt, ccv, and spark plugs 3 times, and that's it. Most reliable vehicle I've owned except for our standby car that sits and we drive only if needed, 1991 Honda civic 4 door with 532k miles. Like all vehicles it's luck of the draw. Hopefully we will get another 100k from our explorer, freaking car prices are stupid and anyone who buys one right now either has money to burn or needs their head checked!

My sunroof went at 65,000 mi. Motor had to be reinstalled. Struts went at 85,000 I replaced with some from 1A Auto. They made it about 38,000 MI. Just had to replace them today. Water pump went at 128,000 mi. Big job. Transfer case went at 130,000.
I have a 2015 Everything engine wise is great But ac problems just started, moon leaks. Buy a suburban ,tahoe or denali. I had before and never regret it
My hood was replaced last month due to paint issues and I have a 2016 Sport. I was told no questions Ford will replace the hood. It didn't cost me a penny either.
My 2015 police receptor utility had the links break by driving over train tracks at about 14 miles an hour they're made out of zinc alloy and it's part of its 75 mile an hour crash test safety feature those are meant to break to absorb energy if you're rear-ended I replaced mine was steel haven't had an issue in two years

It looks like you have a former police version of that vehicle. There were problems with those getting carbon monoxide inside of them because when they were modified for police duty, there were several places where extra holes had to be drilled to attach all of their equipment. They were not leaking because of a factory defect, but because the aftermarket people were drilling extra holes in the bodies of those vehicles. I know that may not be the case with all of them though. Also, what is a “vericle”? I thought it was called a “vehicle”.😂. Good videos though. Keep up the good work!
Own a 2014 XLT with 60K. Just got it back from the Ford dealer where they did like $5000 worth of transmission work. Almost a full rebuild. Some items replaced are 2 and 3 forward gears and torque converter and many more. Luckily still had the powertrain warranty So only paid like $100. Car is running like new again, thank God.
That's truly frightening. I was considering buying a used Explorer 4x4 until reading these comments. No thanks. (And of course the new ones under warranty are priced way out of anyone but the Rothschild's and Rockefellers means to purchase comfortably). This entire system is rigged to keep us enslaved to those same aforementioned hooknosed banksters.

The engine (3.5L V6) is too small for these heavy vehicles. My last 2 vehicles were V8’s. What a difference. Buyers remorse big time! I’ll never buy another V6 again……..or a ford!

Thanks for the video. A couple of days ago on 2017 Explorer Sport checked the hood on mine and it is starting to bubble. Searched more on the web and, yeh, it's a thing with these vehicles. I was prepared to do verbal battle with the dealership when I met with them the day after finding this issue. They stepped up right away for a warranty. Not a cover up paint job, which I would not have accepted anyway, but a factory replacement hood, paint and install. So that's a plus for Ford and a dealership that backed me up. I've owned many vehicles in 55+ years of driving. This is encouraging for me to continue being a customer. I did spend a day looking at replacement options, but having totally dismissed Chrysler after a warranty fight years ago, and Chevy issues too, I'm running out of manufacturers. ;-)

Wow. The carbon monoxide poisoning issue has officially put me off from considering a ford suv. I have a ford fiesta and it's given me it's fair share of issues I've been able to resolve. Got 3 kids now and needed an SUV. It won't be a 5th gen ford or a ford at all. Looking at Toyota Highlanders now.

When you buy an f product, you're gambling with your life. Upon delivery they should supply you with 5 rolls of duck tape and a dozen bungee cords. I know I'll never buy one...NEVER!!!
You forgot about the PTU (AKA Transfer Case). They grenade around 100k the fluid needs to be changed early on and regularly. I put a NPT drain plug in mine. Did it at 85k and the fluid was black and sludge. I only got about 1/4qt out of it. After flushing it about 5 times I finally started to get the full 1/2qt out of it. Drove it 500 miles and did it again. Finally got it coming out clean after 3 more flushes. And don't forget about the water pump that can fail and take out the motor. Change that coolant earlier than recommended too!
I recently wreaked my 09 Escape probably tired. I seen a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT Sport mix with many blackouts and a 2.Echo boost with 34k miles. It still had the previous owners address age about 75 which should’ve been removed. The Chevy dealer offered me a powertrain warranty as long as I own this. After applying for my loan so they would hold it I had to wait for my AAA check about a week. Now this is where it goes south. Being an auto mechanic for 15 years and still do my own vehicles I noticed the rotors and ceramic pads. This happens in Michigan when the car sits to long and the rotors rust. My wife was given her late mom’s 06 Chevy Impala with 12k miles. Here rotors and hardware had to be replaced. I had the Explorer a week and the battery failed they fixed it. A couple days later my shifter wouldn’t go out of park so I opened the side console and extended the lever pushed the brake and put it in neutral called my salesman they picked it up cost 1,000. After they returned it I was leaving for work at 4am being to dark to see what I’m doing I drove her car in and left a note. If I have one more shifter problem that’s a lemon law and get my money back. Other than those problems it’s a tight smooth and peppy SUV so far.

Have a 2011 only issues I've had was ac compressor went bad pretty expensive. Sunroof leaked one day from clogged drain lines and fried the sunroof motor. Other than that just normal maintenance
What about v6 engine that water pumps goes bad .. coolant can leak inside oil pan and blow up engine .. because water pump is ran inside of timing chain (dumbest design ever) .. I mean generally speak water pump goes bad in most vehicles I don’t understand why ford would do such a thing ... to replace water pump you have to take timing chain... so to replace water pump it can cost you up $1500-1700 🤦♂️..most cars it’s easy to replace and shop charge slow around $150-300

Great video! My 2015 Ford Explorer Sport is peeling all around the vehicle. Is there a recall for the peeling paint? I could post pictures of the peeling paint all around the edges of the vehicle and the white aluminum is exposed. I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited, owned it since 2005 that has the throttle body issue. I remove it and clean it frequently. I had a 1994 Ford Explorer (totaled) that the body rusted away and it has the dreaded clunk when is placed in gear but those are my only issues with the 2004. I keep them cleaned and serviced. 1984, 2004 and 2015 engines runs great with no issues. Your thoughts on the paint peeling and what I can do? Contact ford?
I got a 03. Runs great, suspension bushings and transmission are my only downfalls so far. Other then that, the 03's run great, esp if they're 4.6 (if they're V6. You're kinda screwed when it comes time for the timing chain). My grandma went and bought a 2017 Explorer and the result was the same. The paint they put on that car is THIN.

These things have problems with water pump also. You my friend are very lucky to get 460k from your explorer.
How often did you change the coolant? Maybe that prolonged the life of the water pump

That was a problem was fixed in 2011.

they may be faster than the crown vic, they'll never be as reliable as the crown vic, changing out a water pump on these things can be a huge pain

I’m on 80,000 on Original Brakes 2018
I'm at 74,200 on my 2015 with all original brakes. The dealership said it's time to start watching them at the last service because they're starting to get close. Actually getting ready to replace the vehicle, so may never have to do it.
You missed quite a few.
PTU, the transfer case bricks itself after the fluid leaks out or turns into mud.
Electric power steering, yeah its very expensive for a new rack.
VVT solenoids, they stick causing cam/crank correlation codes.
Front lower rear control arm bushings. They get all sloppy and the car is all over the road.
Cat converters, throw a P0420/p0430 and are garbage. Police models have an extended warranty on this.
Rear wheel bearings, they get noisy and fuse themselves to the spindle due to aluminum to steel dissimilar metal corrosion.
Front Upper strut bearings, get all creeky.

Some things not mentioned....the transmission may slip at initial take off, but when it catches.....wow what a jolt you get!! Also, the lower engine mount that attaches from the transmission to the body.. .those crack at around every 60,000 miles. If not replaced in time, the twisting engine can Crack the flexible exhaust can
good catch i have 2013 limited explorer ( 126K ) i changed the flexible exhaust conduit because of the Torque strut mount failure. i feel a vibration when accelerating
Cat converters are garbage, transfer case, front lower control arm rear bushings, water pumps. Its a pretty lousy drivetrain in my experience.

Carbon Monoxide problem because of Exhaust Factory holes its have more Water holes i closed all Exhaust holes in my car after then the Smell is disappeared i,am very happy
My spouse has an 18 Sport and it’s had replacements of times that concern me.
1. Both turbos replaced at 29K miles. (I had to drive behind the explorer with a mechanic to show him the smoke coming out)
2. Transmission was clunking at low speed. It was the transmission mount.
3. Rough idle at times, Dealer cannot duplicate this.
Overall worried about long term ownership. We shall see

I have a 2013 Limited with 145,000 miles and two problems I have with this car is, one, the hood paint peeling off and the second is the head lights. They are HID lights and to replace them you have to take the whole front of the car off to get to the light assembly. I am replacing them with LED lights instead. This is my fourth explorer and on the other three I traded them in after 300,000 miles. Good rigs but, like any vehicle there will be repairs. As far as the paint on the hood I feel Ford should take care of that problem seeing how there are so many explorers on the road with this problem.
Also the high pitched sound that can be heard in 2018 5th gens equipped with the home power outlet. That was so annoying to deal with, pulled the fuse until I was able to get to the dealer. Also had the hood and panel near the gas tank paint bubble, 1 month in a 2020 loaner for them to order hood and repaint nigh the hood and that panel. Ended up trading it in for the 2020 after falling in love with it over the 30 days.

@4:07 - complains door is ajar leaving the dome light on, doesn't notice that the Explorer he's looking at is the police model - and those dome lights are NOT wired into switched power.
Also doesn't mention about the PTU grenading due to its location above the exhaust manifold (less of an issue on turbo models due to forced circulation cooling), or the cat-headers cracking due to garbage design work by Ford.

My wife owns a 2014 limited, 219k miles, had the toe links and rear lid seal done on a recall, replaced the battery twice, brakes and rotors 3 times, accessory belt, ccv, and spark plugs 3 times, and that's it. Most reliable vehicle I've owned except for our standby car that sits and we drive only if needed, 1991 Honda civic 4 door with 532k miles. Like all vehicles it's luck of the draw. Hopefully we will get another 100k from our explorer, freaking car prices are stupid and anyone who buys one right now either has money to burn or needs their head checked!
What motor does it have in it? My moms wanting one and needs reliability

Hey they is a new recall on ford explorer limited for airbags. Had mine done a little over a month ago
My sunroof went at 65,000 mi. Motor had to be reinstalled. Struts went at 85,000 I replaced with some from 1A Auto. They made it about 38,000 MI. Just had to replace them today. Water pump went at 128,000 mi. Big job. Transfer case went at 130,000.

My hood was replaced last month due to paint issues and I have a 2016 Sport. I was told no questions Ford will replace the hood. It didn't cost me a penny either.

My 2015 police receptor utility had the links break by driving over train tracks at about 14 miles an hour they're made out of zinc alloy and it's part of its 75 mile an hour crash test safety feature those are meant to break to absorb energy if you're rear-ended I replaced mine was steel haven't had an issue in two years

It looks like you have a former police version of that vehicle. There were problems with those getting carbon monoxide inside of them because when they were modified for police duty, there were several places where extra holes had to be drilled to attach all of their equipment. They were not leaking because of a factory defect, but because the aftermarket people were drilling extra holes in the bodies of those vehicles. I know that may not be the case with all of them though. Also, what is a “vericle”? I thought it was called a “vehicle”.😂. Good videos though. Keep up the good work!

Own a 2014 XLT with 60K. Just got it back from the Ford dealer where they did like $5000 worth of transmission work. Almost a full rebuild. Some items replaced are 2 and 3 forward gears and torque converter and many more. Luckily still had the powertrain warranty So only paid like $100. Car is running like new again, thank God.

That's truly frightening. I was considering buying a used Explorer 4x4 until reading these comments. No thanks. (And of course the new ones under warranty are priced way out of anyone but the Rothschild's and Rockefellers means to purchase comfortably). The engine (3.5L V6) is too small for these heavy vehicles. My last 2 vehicles were V8’s. What a difference. Buyers remorse big time! I’ll never buy another V6 again……..or a ford!
Hello i liked very much this video. I bought a 2013 ford explorer last year. I being having a transmission problem sometimes i put it on d to go and seams that doesn't get in gear took it to the mecanic they replace something on the shifting but did not fix the problem. Any ideas. Thanks

Thanks for the video. A couple of days ago on 2017 Explorer Sport checked the hood on mine and it is starting to bubble. Searched more on the web and, yeh, it's a thing with these vehicles. I was prepared to do verbal battle with the dealership when I met with them the day after finding this issue. They stepped up right away for a warranty. Not a cover up paint job, which I would not have accepted anyway, but a factory replacement hood, paint and install. So that's a plus for Ford and a dealership that backed me up. I've owned many vehicles in 55+ years of driving. This is encouraging for me to continue being a customer. I did spend a day looking at replacement options, but having totally dismissed Chrysler after a warranty fight years ago, and Chevy issues too, I'm running out of manufacturers. ;-)

Wow. The carbon monoxide poisoning issue has officially put me off from considering a ford suv. I have a ford fiesta and it's given me it's fair share of issues I've been able to resolve. Got 3 kids now and needed an SUV. It won't be a 5th gen ford or a ford at all. Looking at Toyota Highlanders now.

When you buy an f product, you're gambling with your life. Upon delivery they should supply you with 5 rolls of duck tape and a dozen bungee cords. I know I'll never buy one...NEVER!!!
How are you not going to mention the PTU issue and water pump issue? They are prolific issues and far more severe than light bulbs staying on

You forgot about the PTU (AKA Transfer Case). They grenade around 100k the fluid needs to be changed early on and regularly. I put a NPT drain plug in mine. Did it at 85k and the fluid was black and sludge. I only got about 1/4qt out of it. After flushing it about 5 times I finally started to get the full 1/2qt out of it. Drove it 500 miles and did it again. Finally got it coming out clean after 3 more flushes.
And don't forget about the water pump that can fail and take out the motor. Change that coolant earlier than recommended too!

I recently wreaked my 09 Escape probably tired. I seen a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT Sport mix with many blackouts and a 2.Echo boost with 34k miles. It still had the previous owners address age about 75 which should’ve been removed. The Chevy dealer offered me a powertrain warranty as long as I own this. After applying for my loan so they would hold it I had to wait for my AAA check about a week. Now this is where it goes south. Being an auto mechanic for 15 years and still do my own vehicles I noticed the rotors and ceramic pads. This happens in Michigan when the car sits to long and the rotors rust. My wife was given her late mom’s 06 Chevy Impala with 12k miles. Here rotors and hardware had to be replaced. I had the Explorer a week and the battery failed they fixed it. A couple days later my shifter wouldn’t go out of park so I opened the side console and extended the lever pushed the brake and put it in neutral called my salesman they picked it up cost 1,000. After they returned it I was leaving for work at 4am being to dark to see what I’m doing I drove her car in and left a note. If I have one more shifter problem that’s a lemon law and get my money back. Other than those problems it’s a tight smooth and peppy SUV so far.

Have a 2011 only issues I've had was ac compressor went bad pretty expensive. Sunroof leaked one day from clogged drain lines and fried the sunroof motor. Other than that just normal maintenance

What about v6 engine that water pumps goes bad .. coolant can leak inside oil pan and blow up engine .. because water pump is ran inside of timing chain (dumbest design ever) .. I mean generally speak water pump goes bad in most vehicles I don’t understand why ford would do such a thing ... to replace water pump you have to take timing chain... so to replace water pump it can cost you up $1500-1700 🤦♂️..most cars it’s easy to replace and shop charge slow around $150-300

I have a 2014 Sport and my kids hate it. It makes them sick despite having had all the recall work done. I have a home CO detector in the cabin and it’s never registered under normal conditions. So confusing.
Police Explorers should be cheap and come with free CO detector

My 2015 Ford Explorer Sport is peeling all around the vehicle. Is there a recall for the peeling paint? I could post pictures of the peeling paint all around the edges of the vehicle and the white aluminum is exposed.
I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited, owned it since 2005 that has the throttle body issue. I remove it and clean it frequently.
I had a 1994 Ford Explorer (totaled) that the body rusted away and it has the dreaded clunk when is placed in gear but those are my only issues with the 2004. I keep them cleaned and serviced.
1984, 2004 and 2015 engines runs great with no issues. Your thoughts on the paint peeling and what I can do? Contact ford?
I got a 03. Runs great, suspension bushings and transmission are my only downfalls so far. Other then that, the 03's run great, esp if they're 4.6 (if they're V6. You're kinda screwed when it comes time for the timing chain).
My grandma went and bought a 2017 Explorer and the result was the same. The paint they put on that car is THIN.

The $2000 water pump replacement on a $78 part. I had a 2013 that blew the pump and it almost took the motor with it.
Thank you, I just bought a 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility with 138k miles. No issues yet as it had a great maintenance service record throughout it's use with the police department and will keep an eye on those issues. Thank you.
