    7:15 Funny enough, this song does have lyrics! It was composed by Brad Buxer who worked with Michael Jackson both on this game and off. Ice Cap's music was repurposed from a song he composed in the 80s that was never released at the time called "Hard Times" by his band The Jetzons.
    The Credits theme for Sonic 3 by itself was the inspiration for Jackson's track "Stranger in Moscow". There's a lot of intrigue surrounding Jackson's involvement with Sonic 3 and Ice Cap's music is a big part of it.

    • @FungiGamer
      @FungiGamer ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Was gonna say this so I’ll just add: there seems to have been a fair bit of involvement of Jackson in Sonic 3 but it’s been hush-hush for some time now for a myriad of reasons, mostly due to MJ hating the instrumentation in the Genesis and not wanting to be credited. In Sonic Origins all those tracks were wiped are replaced with early prototype renditions. Another obvious inspiration is Carnival Night Zone being the basis for Jam

    • @GRNKRBY
      @GRNKRBY ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Janet Jackson also seemed to borrow from Sonic for at least one of her songs "Everywhere I go, every smile I see, I know you are there, shining down on me" seems like it might sample Bridge Zone from the Sonic Gamegear / Megadrive game.

    • @UltimateTS64
      @UltimateTS64 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's funny because the composer purposely made the ost to sound like a normal album, so if a kid was playing, their family would hear it and want to listen to the soundtrack outside the game. That's what happened with my mom when I used to play Sonic R through Sonic Gems Collection. She loved it so much that she wanted to buy the ost

The quality and variety of SA2's music is off the charts: Each character's stages use a different genre of music. Or even some of the themes songs for each character

    Press Garden Zone Act 2 is probably the best song in any game over the past five years tbh. Deffo an underappreciated classic.
    Of note, Tee Lopes, the composer on Sonic Mania, was involved in multiple other Sonic fan projects like the Sonic 2 HD prototype and a few of the games Christian Whitehead made before Mania as well. In fact I believe the entirety of Mania was made by people who worked on various fan projects and ROM hacks.

  • @wish-pieces
    @wish-pieces ปีที่แล้ว +6

    i have a lot of questions for whoever selected some of these songs. you didn't make sure they listened to stardust speedway bad future or live and learn??? sand hill is also one of the most random songs they could've picked from adventure 1

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah to be honest I didn't even remember Sand Hill existing. I've played through Adventure and am familiar with most of the soundtrack but Sand Hill must not have stood out because I didn't remember it at all.
      Palmtree Panic for CD was certainly a choice. It's a good song but it _IS_ pretty generic, compared to the rest of the soundtrack.

    6:50 That was one of the songs that Michael Jackson allegedly composed for Sonic 3, I guess that's why it sounds so contemporary, in a sense. Most Sonic music from the Genesis era was clearly inspired by the New Jack Swing style of the late 80s/early 90s though.

    Little disappointed that they ended up stopping most of them during the intros of the songs. A lot of them get a lot better later on. I adore Tropical Resort, but the first minute is mostly just build-up.
    Also feel like the best songs weren't always chosen, but hey, that's fine. I don't even remember Sand Hill personally haha. It's just not a level I think about when I think of Adventure. I think the better songs of Adventure are actually a lot closer to the one song they listened to from Adventure 2.

  • @oggiv
    @oggiv ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just wanna clarify the whole "act" thing real quick. Sonic has zones, which contain acts. The zones and acts are pretty much Sonic's version of Mario's worlds, which contain levels. So for example, when a song is named Hydrocity Act 1, it's the music from the first act (or level) from the zone (or world) called Hydrocity. Any act after the first one usually has remixed or reimagined music from the first act.
    If you want more Sonic music, I recommend you watch a great video/documentary by Liam TriForce here on TH-cam called "Understanding the Music of Sonic the Hedgehog", which goes into detail about the creation of the music and gives you samples of a lot of tracks. It's also a good video to learn more about the games themselves, which also get talked about for the sake of context.

    Sonic Unleashed had some real bangers in its soundtrack. I'm assuming either A) Kit just couldn't handle Chip, or B) they just couldn't find a copy for the 360/PS3.

    I firmly believe that Sonic Rush has one of the best soundtracks of all time (in the realm of video games). I highly suggest you do yourself a favor and listen to at least a few of the tracks from that game!

    Great video! Gonna share a few more things here.
    First of all, glad you went with the original Sonic 3 Genesis soundtrack as it's never been used again due to licensing issues. The PC version and Origins game use different tracks (that are originally from the Genesis beta actually!) The final Genesis game, a lot of people believe Michael Jackson worked on to some extent without being credited, which might be why the music still holds up so well! I see another commenter already mention this, but his keyboardist (another person credited on Sonic 3) went on to form his own band called the Jetzons, and a track they released YEARS after it was composed called "Hard Times" which sounds a lot like Ice Cap zone! Shared this mashup on discord the other day, but I'll stick it here as well! th-cam.com/video/iPNgC3gBaq4/w-d-xo.html
    With Sonic CD, that OST is pretty divisive since there's an English and a Japanese soundtrack that are very different from each other! I'm not familiar enough with either to know what version the tracks here came from, but there's debate in the fandom about which of the two is the better OST!
    I really love game OST videos like this, would love to see more of them in the future!

    It's quiet tough to choose between Sonic 3 and Sonic 2 music because I like both nostalgically speakingb of course because Sonic 2 have some of the best soundtrack in the game as a result whatever I listen to the soundtrack it brings me back my old childhood days with my neighbors playing Sonic 2 on their Sega Genesis model 1 on the other hand Sonic 3 have some calm relaxing music and some that really pumps me up as such is quite difficult for me to choose which one is the best to be honest.

    If you're willing to look outside of the games you played, Sonic 3D Blast is worth a listen. The Genesis & Saturn both have their own soundtrack, the latter having Redbook audio. The Green Grove Zone themes would be a good way to go about it. I'd advise listening to the Genesis Act 1 and the Saturn Act 2 (one of my favorite pieces of video game music).

    I haven't played Sonic games for a long time except Sonic Mania and the first 2 Sonic games out of nostalgia on Switch... but the soundtracks when I hear em, they just slap... Genesis was not always everyone's fave sounding system but their music, especially for the more upbeat rocking numbers the grittiness of that soundchip really worked for it

    Sonic's music is a huge part of it's appeal, and you will get many comments saying you should've listened to certain songs.
    I will not say that... even though I want to.
    Fun video though I enjoyed it a lot. And frankly I expected not to lol

    Also fun fact about Sonic CD. There are 2 soundtracks!
    There was one for the Japanese version and then for some reason they decided to make an entire other soundtrack for the US version. Pretty much everyone agrees that the Japanese soundtrack is better.
    Y’all did end up listening to the Japanese soundtrack which is great!

    If Midnight Greenhouse isn't in here I'll be disappointed. You guys may or may not know this but Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles had a music-conspiracy that turned out to be true that Michael Jackson's team worked on the soundtrack but didnt have his name on it. Which is why a lot of it sounds like something he could sing over. He was also a huge Sonic fan :)
