We hope you all enjoy Sonic Week! With this video we clearly had a lot of questions about these games, so please leave any helpful info in the comments!!
Okay, to answer a few of your questions: 1. Robotnik and Eggman are the same person 2. The reason there are small animals in the badniks(enemies) is because they are the power source
I'd gladly help you two out, so... here goes nothing. Doctor Robotnik and Doctor Eggman are one and the same person. Robotnik was a thing that stemmed from the US localization of the first game. In Japan, he was always called Doctor Eggman. The name Robotnik carried over to all kinds of Sonic related stuff (games, cartoon, merch, etc.) in the US and Europe all the way up until the turn of the millennia, where they then decided to make the name "Eggman" consistent for all regions. (The 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise goes back to calling the villain character Dr. Robotnik instead, but the movies aren't canonical to the games. The movies are its own separate thing. The movies do take notes from the original games, but they are mostly its own thing. Just saying, because you might get confused by watching the movie and trying the connect it to the games. Try to keep both mediums separate.) Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles was originally supposed to be 1 huge game, but the developers behind Sonic 3 only had 9 months(!) to make the whole game, so they came up with the idea of splitting the game into 2 cartridges. Sonic 3 came out in-time for its McDonald's promotional campaign, while they were able to finish up the game with Sonic & Knuckles later on. Sonic & Knuckles released with a flap on top of the cartridge which let you insert other games, including Sonic 3, which let players play the full version of Sonic 3 as developers originally intended, with a bit of bonus content if you played them connected. Sonic Origins decided to remaster the fusion of both games, as that's the canonical version of the game. Sonic CD has a time travel mechanic that lets Sonic save the future by either traveling to the past (through hitting "PAST" signs and running as fast as possible without stopping) to destroy robot generators, or by collecting 7 time stones (which is done through the Sonic 1 method of gathering 50 rings and jumping into the big ring at the end of a stage). In total, there's 4 different variants for every single normal level in CD (Past, Present, Bad Future and Good Future). Sonic Adventure 1, even though the Dreamcast never had a second analog stick, lets you control the camera by holding down L or R to turn the camera left or right. :) Btw, Sonic fans would probably recommend you different versions of games, so... just in case you needed more insight what they may recommend, I'll say it ahead in time: - Sonic 1, 2, 3&K and CD all had better remasters done partially/entirely by fans, though they're all a bit hard to set up, let me know if you still would like to know. ^^ - Sonic Adventure 1's rereleases have all ruined the original game's presentation by introducing downgrades to its visuals and glitches. The more recent the release, the worse the downgrades got. It's so bad that there's a blog called "Dreamcastify" which lists every downgrade Sonic Adventure got with its rereleases. The PC versions of Sonic Adventure however have strong fan community support and fixes, which resulted in projects like the Dreamcast Conversion, which restored visuals back to the better/more charming looking Dreamcast version. Try visiting the Dreamcastify blog, it'll tell you how to get all of that up and running. It's worth it, I promise... - Sonic 2006 has multiple ways of improving the original game, all done by fans and provided for free of course. The most popular way to currently fix up Sonic 06 is Sonic P-06 by ChaosX. A PC remake, with new controls, physics, tweaked visuals, new gameplay mechanics, the works. This fangame project isn't currently finished up yet, but fans *really* like what is available to the public so far. - Sonic Colors Ultimate on the Switch is the absolute worst way to play Sonic Colors, and that's really sad ^^' Colors Ultimate has gameplay issues, visual problems, the content it did add (ghost races and a remixed soundtrack) is bad, the audio mixing is broken (soundeffects randomly play in either audio channel for no reason, audio balancing is random too), the Switch version has even more issues, it's as bad and even worse on a technical standpoint than Sonic 06 in my honest opinion... Even your own footage has shown how the game can randomly bug out with e.g. broken graphics (all the white parts of the level are not supposed to be there). I'd hate to recommend playing the original Wii version, but that's currently the only good way to play it...
To answer one of your questions, Sonic gave Dr. Robotnik the insulting nickname of Dr. Eggman, but Robotnik embraced it. This is covered in Sonic Frontiers in the egg memos. They’re worth a listen if you play it on stream. They’re one of the best parts of the game! Anyway, incredible video and I hope you enjoy your deep dive into the wonderfully strange world of Sonic!
Apologies if someone’s already explained this but, the branching paths are essentially for the various skill gaps and replay ability . Low path = beginners Middle path = normal High path = experienced players. It means that a wide variety of players can play the same level and nobody is left feeling short changed.
I always felt like I was missing out while running along the bottom path. I've never enjoyed a Sonic game, but that's fine, there are a lot of games out there.
I always thought bottom paths is for experienced players, way more dangerous stuff happens at the lower floors in Sonic games more enemies, spikes, bottomless pits lol
Eggman/Robotnik is the same situation as Peach/Princess Toadstool. The character had a distinct name in the US that got phased out years later for their original Japanese name.
Actually, that's not ENTIRELY accurate with Eggman. His situation is slightly different in that he's been retconned to have both names. The best example is SA2, where they do use both names
@@CheeseHenderson Peach is still very occasionally referred to as Princess Toadstool, but Peach is the main name. So it is mostly the same. It's just that Eggman calls back to Robotnik a lot more.
There's something that it's never mentioned whenever someone recommends a Sonic Game. Sonic games are not pick up and play games, they test you, they test reflexes, they test your hability to get better at them and to not give up. But once you understand a level, you play it again, and that level that originally took you 5 minutes now only takes you 3. You are dying less and you are enjoying the level more and more. Sonic games are about mastering levels and enjoying the speed that you can get. I get that it's not everyones cup of tea, and that's okay, but it's also worth mention it out for a more understanding perspective on it
The Sonic & Knuckles content was basically meant to be part of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but the development team ran out of time. So Sega released Sonic 3, then released Sonic & Knuckles as a special cartridge that let you plug Sonic 3 (or even Sonic 2) on top of the & Knuckles cart. That let you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles together, and it also let you play as Knuckles in all the Sonic 3 levels (or in Sonic 2, if you plug in that cart). At the time, it was really neat tech!
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my favorite Sonic game! Then, Sonic 2, Sonic 1, and Sonic Adventure. S3&K is a true classic, like Mario 1, Mario 3, Mario World, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy, and Mario Odyssey.
On the Genesis titles, the reward comes through refining skill. You can just go on autohog and let the act guide you, which most do at first. On subsequent plays, then, you can get better, know how to best utilize the physics and get through the acts even faster. Eventually a player may be able to accomplish this in later stages where it's tougher to get that speed. The speed is the reward for playing well. Even when the spindash came along, rather than defeating the point, it opened up what you can do w/ Sonic and how the zones could be structured. It's still amazing what an experienced player can pull off w/ the blue blur, including in the fundamentally different 3D titles.
This was a fascinating watch, to say the least. It's clear both from the questions being asked and the gameplay that you guys were absolutely brand new to most everything each of these games had to offer. I don't blame you guys for that, and while I would've wished you spent more time on each game, I also can't blame that either as you have a schedule to adhere to and such. A lot of the other comments have answers for a lot of the questions you have, and I hope that if a game did interest you (like Sonic Adventure seemed to), then I hope you go back and play more of that one at some point! I know I'm a bit late to the party, but these Sonic Week videos will definitely be interesting to watch from here on!
There are two mistakes I see people do when trying to play the original three 2D Sonic games for the first time: 1. You're actually not supposed to just run forwards non-stop and get the most speed. Until you've played and completed a stage several times you should go slow and play as if it's a Mario game - that's the game the gameplay was heavily based on. Even in Mario you wouldn't try to run through the stage without knowing it already. 2. When you're running or have fast sections, always press DOWN so that you start rolling and are protected. If you get the habit of doing this you'll have a much easier time with the 2D Sonic games. I'm a big fan of 2D Mario games and Sonic games and only after I got good at the Mario games did I understand how to play the Sonic games and approach the stages more slowly.
I think Krysta was trying to get one in Sonic Mania, and that's why she kept going back around the spiky bridge. But by the time she actually made it there, it was gone and she didn't know what she was doing.
It was really fun seeing you guys so excited over the Sonic Adventure games, lol. They're definitely cheesy, but that's a lot of the charm and appeal of them. I'd love to see you guys play more of it! Some say the other characters aren't as fun as the Sonic gameplay in those games, so if that's a turn-off, you're able to play an entire story as just Sonic in Adventure 1.
I think a different way to look at the level design for 2D Sonic is not so much about exploring the way you would a Mario or Metroid game, but more like branching paths for future plays of that same level. Since nearly all the paths lead to the end in some way, you don't have to worry about checking each one out before actual progress (which is a change I definitely had to make myself, as somebody who loves looking for secrets). Enjoyed the video, and it's always fun to see people react to Sonic '06 jank. Excited for the rest of the week. Would also be cool if you ever did want to dive deeper into the Adventure games.
I think you are missing the fundamental design philosophy of Sonic games. Especially early Sonic games, when kids only had a handful of games and didn’t have access to a huge variety of games like today, you would play a game over and over again. Sonic levels provide a variety of paths you can take, and each time you play you learn new ways to go and perfect your route until you can beat levels in record time. They’re more about speedrunning than going around and exploring.
As someone who grew up with classic, this kinda hurt 😬 Someone knowledgeable guiding you two would have done wonders. But oh well - as long as it’s entertaining, which it is - its fine I guess D:
We Sonic fans are a weird bunch compared to the gaming community at large, I guess. We should be pretty used to being the punching bag of the internet by now. But if they didn’t enjoy them I would probably not worry about trying to make them understand why the games are good. The style over substance conclusion may be true of some of the later games, especially the adventure games, but the Genesis games have a lot of depth. But I guess I can understand where they are coming from. Perhaps that style is a hard one to bring new fans into…
Hi Kit & Krista! As a member of the better part of the Sonic Community, I thank you two for trying out the games and even making Sonic Week a thing in the first place. However while this was all just good fun to be squeezed together in a video that would have admittedly been too long if you hadn't rushed through, I kindly recommend that you two do not use the 5 minutes you played a handful of the series' games as a basis for judgement on the entire series as a whole. while it was fun to see you guys run around of the first two acts of a few games, I saw that there were many misconceptions and poorly made decisions in gameplay and dialogue. I understand that you both are beginners, so please allow me to point out a couple things to better your Sonic experiences in the future! - I see you guys were playing the classic titles on Sonic Origins, which is fine, however to get the best modern experience out of these games, especially for beginners, PLEASE play on anniversary mode. This mode removes the limited lives and features these titles on widescreen. For some quick recommendations, I would really just play through Sonic 2 and Sonic 3&K. Sonic 1 hasnt really aged well in comparison to 2 and Sonic CD is a really vertically designed game with a bigger emphasis on time travel and exploration. - Kit, you were actually doing SO WELL in Sonic 2's Chemical plant zone, and just because you fell doesn't mean you lost the game, you just got sent to a lower route and were well on your way to completing the level. Chemical Plant's level design asks for your patience before you get a chance to earn your speed. - When Sonic turns gold, he uses the 7 Chaos Emeralds' unlimited energy to become Super Sonic. Yes, this was inspired by Dragon Ball Z's Super Saiyans. - Krysta, thank you for enjoying Sonic Adventure 1! I hope you can enjoy the game on your own time and enjoy the rest of it! Some parts are kind of tricky, so keep your wits about you! - As for why you see Sonic hanging around humans a lot in Sonic 06, there is connective tissue to set the stage for this narratively in Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 as well as Shadow the Hedgehog. - As for the whole Elise kissing Sonic thing, that's really at one moment at the very end of this big, buggy game, so believe me when I say that there is so much more to thing about beyond that one thing. - While I'm happy to see Krysta enjoying Sonic Colors Ultimate, it should be warned that the Ultimate suffers from long loading times. If you're interested in getting the best experience out of Sonic Colors, the Original Wii version is the way to go! - Lastly, for now, Sonic Mania is supposed to be a celebration of the classic games made by fans, for fans of the series. While there are many locations revisited from past titles, Sonic Mania truly shines from the all-original stages they made just for this game. This game also introduces a new move to Sonic's moveset, the Dropdash, which allows Sonic to take off as soon as he touches the ground. To do this, hold the Jump button again mid-jump.
I just have two things to say: 1. As a near lifelong fan of the Sonic franchise, I am really happy and thankful you guys are finally giving the games a fair shake 2. Kit and Krysta, you guys are heroes for playing through the one game a majority of the fanbase agrees is the worst(06): granted, I think Lost World and Forces are worse in my opinion
Ahhhh I wish you could have seen more of Sonic 3 & Knuckles! That game is 2D Sonic at its prime! Each act changes the music and feel of the levels rather than the same zone 3 times like Sonic 1 and 2 are. Also, if you hold down and then jump, you do a spin dash!
Gonna edit this comment with info for questions you two had as I watch through Eggman vs Robotnik is kind of like a Koopa vs Bowser thing, it was a regional name thing. Since Sonic was marketed toward America, and they wanted to keep consistency for the post Sonic Adventure retcon of the franchise, Adventure officially made Eggman a nickname of Robotnik that he “kind of stuck with to mock Sonic for trying to tease him” kind of thing. Sonic 3 & Knuckles were planned to be one game but had to be separated due to cartridge space and time, so they tied in a lock-in cartridge gimmick so you could play older games with Knuckles. Cd was listed earlier because it takes place earlier in canon. Realistically, Early Sega kind of split into US and JPN divisions with two concepts for Sonic 2, so each made their own game, Sonic 2 by JPN and CD by USA respectively,; that's why the games seem like such radically different takes for moving the franchise forward. CD’s gimmick is time travel, to get the good ending you need to go back and forth to destroy devices and yes it is as chaotic as it sounds. Technically Tail's plane, the Tornado, was Sonic's which he kind of took over after Sonic 2. He didn't really get good at controlling it until Adventure 2, considering in Adventure he forgets to add landing gear to a modification he makes mid game... Also, just got to the part where you picked up Eggman=Robotnik, so, yeah, see bullet 1 haha. Also, yes, after Sonic 3 Knuckes took on a bit of a rival anti-hero role until that kind of got usurped by Shadow in SA2, then Knuckles lost himself rolewise for a long time as a comic-relief. I will say after playing Adventure 2 recently: it's design and camera has NOT aged well, but its story has charm and the Chao Garden adds a unique level of replayability and a break up of the more frustrating gameplay. Sonic 06, oh boy... There was a lot of internal issues that led to the game being in the state it was, including Yuji Naka leaving. Fun fact here is the demo version that released on online stores ended up being a more polished version than the finished product. Technically Sonic Heroes and a whole bunch of fantastic Handheld Sonic games came out before this (would HIGHLY recommend the handheld titles if you get your hands on them, even if it would be near impossible to capture). If you tried to continue, would have been hilarious to see your reactions that, yes, you would have started over from the *very beginning* opening cutscene, not Wave Ocean. Colors pretty much changed up the Modern formula to what it is today. Not much to say here, but yeah it's pretty polished and seems to take some inspirations from other games at the time; levels can also be shorter after that tutorial. Mania's level design is indeed heavily inspired toward classic Act 1 and 2 level designs for the classic levels as their Act 1 with some better design, with NEW level designs and gimmicks for Act 2 (Chemical Plant Act 2 is a great example if you got to it). As for player controls, 2 player co-op was a thing even back in Sonic 2, albeit camera follows Sonic. Puzzled Krysta didn't figure out Tails is pretty invincible and useful for cheesing bosses. Glad you had fun!
About "Yuji Naka leaving": He was apparently fired, and didn't leave on his own accord. As with modern releases, I think SEGA's management just meddled too much leading to Sonic 06 being released prematurely.
Sonic CD was actually the one that was made in Japan while Sonic 2 was made in the US (though still by Yuji Naka, he had moved to the US and worked on Sonic 2 and 3 there).
Sonic CD: When you run fast enough you move into the past of the future. To get best ending you have to go into the past in seven worlds and destroy seven generators Eggman created. The planet you're on has time travel, you see, and exists in multiple times at once.
PLaying Sonic games? GOTTA GO FAST...*so we can be done with it* lol Whether you like the Sonic games themselves or not... their soundtracks are just a bop (particularly the Genesis games), you have to admit
If you guys liked Sonic Colors, you should definitely play Sonic Generations. It’s essentially the best moments from every sonic game with the gameplay of Colors
Alot of comments saying Eggman and robotnik are the same person! At least in the sonic adventure story they are not! In that lore, Dr. Robotnik is Eggman's grandfather
I like how Sonic 06 was recorded with a camera pointed at the TV instead of a video capture device, very nostalgic of old let's plays in the early days of TH-cam
The Sonic 3 and Knuckles thing is a bit silly lol. Originally Sonic 3 was supposed to be one game but apparently because of a McDonalds promotion deadline, they couldn't finish the whole game so they released the first half of the game as Sonic 3. Then later they released the second half as Sonic & Knuckles as a cartridge that had another cartridge slot on top of it. You could put Sonic 2 on there and make Knuckles playable in Sonic 2, but you could also put Sonic 3 on and play Sonic 3 as it was originally intended.
Oh my goodness, what happened to Tropical Resort in Colors Ultimate there? The textures just didn't load at all. All the white parts you saw, that's just because the game bugged out and didn't load the textures. Colors Ultimate never ceases to surprise me. You should've definitely played the original Wii version, the Ultimate version is horrible. xD
Of all the videos I've seen on this channel, this has to be the most painful to sit through. Not even gave most games a fair shake, just "I don't like this, move on."
The environments in tropical resort of sonic colors looks broken. Some of the environments they zoom through look completely white and has no lighting.
Oh, the lighting not existing is normal for Colors Ultimate (because they never ported the lighting over from the original Wii version), but the white parts are absolutely a bug.
When you said something about playing the game a little slower to take all the details in, as long as you don't get a Time Out by playing for 10 minutes on a single level, it actually is better to try to play a little slower your first time around. The games are about speed, sure, but speed is a reward for your skill in the older games. When you're running into everything at a million miles per hour and get hit by something you didn't know was there the first time, it's frustrating but intended. That way, next time you'll replay the game and remember where all the obstacles are so it's like instinct to jump at certain times or take certain paths to go faster, get better time bonuses, keep more Rings for the end of the stage. Older Sonic games are very arcade-y in their design, where the point is less about finishing the game and more about gaining the skills necessary to get a very high score. In terms of gameplay advice for the classic games, instead of holding left and right to just run, I press down during automated segments to spin into a ball. That way, you gain more momentum going up and down slopes and through loops. Sonic is always a hitbox against enemies when he's a ball, which includes jumping, Spin Dashing, and rolling. That prevents situations where you're holding left and right and you run face first into an enemy and take damage. Knowing when to curl into a ball does a lot to make the sudden enemy placement more bearable for a first time playthrough. Hope this helps, and would love to see you guys try more Sonic/non-Nintendo content on the channel!
People probably said this already but every 2D sonic game that you can play as both sonic and tails is actually available to be played in co-op where player 2 controls tails.
The Sonic week starts and it starts....! On a Very rough note... Anyways, I love these games but since the gameplay is rather different to get adjusted to than most mascot platformers, it will always fall short on newcomers. Adjusting to speed and learning level layout takes a lot more time to adjust than say, playing Super Mario World. 1. Regarding Sonic CD and Sonic 2: If I recall correctly, they were developed side to side, some wanted to make new gameplay aspects to the game (exploration with time mechanics) and the other team just wanted a second entry. Additional fact, Sonic CD has two different soundtracks for America and for Japan. For the re-release of Sonic CD for 360/PS3/Mobile/PC they gave you the option to choose between soundtracks, however the JP intro ("You can do anything") was replaced with the instrumental version of the song, as the original composer Casey Rankin had passed away in 2009. For Sonic Origins it seems they solved any issues as it is back in the game. 2. Sonic 2006 was developed in a short period of time, so any story tweaks, bug fixing or anything game developer wise got thrown out the window just to meet winter holidays deadline with the release of the PS3. Not being enough, they also sliced the team in half to also port Sonic 06 to the Wii, however that version eventually got canned in favor for a new game, Sonic and the secret rings. That's on top of my head. Shame you guys didn't had much of a positive experience but at least you gave it a shot. Sonic Adventure 2 is certainly the high note of 3D sonic games in my opinion.
I have great memories with Sonic Heroes but the physics were really rough! But then if it didn’t bother them in the Adventure games… lol. Grinding could have been way more fun if it wasn’t so easy to miss the rail.
I've always being a Nintendo fan, growing up playing Mario and never "understood" Sonic. I thought the speed parts (mainly of modern games) were too flashy and automatic, as if the game was playing for me. My first time playing the classic ones was with SEGA Ages and Genesis Collection on Switch. I still couldn't understand the game, because now I wanted to run fast, but the game was always throwing things in my way to get hit or stuck. BUT everything changed when I played Sonic 1 with a friend of mine who likes Sonic and knows a lot about the classic games. Instead of trying to go fast, we were discovering the levels, trying to collect the most rings without getting hit, we were finding hidden lives and trying to grab the chaos emeralds. It was super fun and we were able to beat Sonic 1 that way. We also played Sonic 2 and it helped me to see what a huge improvement it was compared to the first one. These games are very well made and very replayable. I suggest you to play Sonic 2 together (in a future Kit & Krysta 64), taking turns, and trying to explore the levels.. it will be fun for sure!
I loved Sonic Adventure (1 & 2) Chaos consumed dozens of hours of my life - if not more. I played so much Sonic to play the Chao minigame and I KNOW I am not alone.
Sonic gameplay is jarring at first, especially in 3D, but once you get the hang of the controls and give it some more time, you start appreciating it a little more 🙂
I loved Sonic Adventure 2: Battle! (It was an enhanced release of Sonic Adventure 2, for the GameCube.) I spent way too much time raising Chao in the garden. But it was a fun game overall. Lots of fond memories of playing that one.
This has got to be the most `yell at the screen` Kit and Krysta video yet. The special zone ring. The fire shield attack. The chronological place of sonic CD. The Eggman!
Gotta play more adventure 2 battle to actually see how it feels. What you got was a small bit of the actual game. There's fun Chao stuff and ALL types of missions.
As a lifelong Sonic fan this was so much fun to watch! Seeing new players reactions to what’s often taken for granted as part of the series was really interesting and quite funny at times! Looking forward to the next videos
In Zelda Breath of the Wild, during one of the random overworld piano bits that play, there are two consecutive notes that play that I can’t unhear "SEEEEEGAAAA!" when I hear it. Lol
Sonic CD is after Sonic 1 because even though Sonic 2 released first, Sonic CD had the same dev team as Sonic 1 and was developed as a successor to it. Sonic 2 was developed by Yuji Naka, and a team in America that he led. In the timeline, Sonic CD takes place after Sonic 1 to explain the absence of Tails and Knuckles.
In Sonic 3, the boss was easy because you had the fire shield which makes you immune to the fire underneath the boss and the boss's flamethrower. I'm glad you guys liked the Adventure games. Those were my favorites growing up and I think they are legitimately good even though they're really janky. I hope you get to experience the Chao Garden side of the game. That was what kept us playing so much as kids.
I'd definitely recommend playing through Adventure! I dunno how much you'll like Adventure 2 as a whole because it makes you play through other types of stages like mech shooter stages and treasure hunting stages, meanwhile in Adventure 1 you can choose to play those by selecting the robot character for the mech shooter stages or Knuckles for the treasure stages. But if you only want to play the speed stages, then you can just play Sonic and still have a good time! (also if you wanna play more of Colors, Colors Ultimate isn't too bad for a first playthrough but if you can help it maybe play the Wii version instead.) Glad to see you guys are giving Sonic a shot!
To answer Kit’s question yes Dr. Robotnik and Eggman are the same person. I believe his real name is Dr. Robotnik and Eggman is a nickname that Sonic gave him.
One interesting thing about the Sonic series is how many different types of gameplay there are. The Genesis games were all about momentum and careful platforming, the spin dash added in the second game makes this much more forgiving so that you can gain momentum anywhere but simply going fast isn’t always your best option. The levels are designed to be replayed since you breeze through only one path. Sonic CD is weird. It is the only 2d game (except maybe Knuckles Chaotix?) that emphasizes exploration (rather than expecting you to just replay the level). It has four versions of each level you can go back and forth between but actually pulling off the time travel is very difficult in some places, but there are locations hidden in various parts of the level so backtracking and wandering is encouraged. After the jump to 3D there was a pattern of the games being really ambitious or having very interesting gimmicks but falling short due to lack of polish. Sonic Colors (Switch) and Sonic Unleashed (Wii) are the most polished 3D Sonic games I’ve played. I have not played Frontiers yet though. The 3D games are sorta like racing games where you follow a track and are rewarded with speed by doing well. The final level of Sonic Unleashed Wii feels like playing Mario Kart. Finally there’s the Rush games which might be more up your alley than the Genesis games. These games are designed to go fast and are normally less punishing. You can do tricks to build up your speed boost and like the modern 3D games are played more like a racing game than a platformer. The first one is better (more streamlined). The Rush music is unique in the franchise but also very good. Your experience with the Genesis games is probably a matter of taste, there is a whole generation of fans that prefer the 3D games. I grew up on the originals and honestly though I do like Mario, many of the early Mario games feel dull to me compared to those early Sonic games. I also tend to find the Mario characters rather boring compared to the colorful and sometimes over-the-top personalities of Sonic’s friends. I may be in the minority here as even some Sonic fans complain about the characters.
A bit late (or maybe more than a bit late), but there's something I want to emphasize here: Sonic (or at least classic Sonic) isn't really about *speed*, it's more about *speedrunning*. Consider a 2D Mario game, for example: you can take it at whatever pace you want, but the levels are designed so that, once you've played the game enough, you can get into a flow state where you hold right and run the whole time, finishing the level in one go by jumping with perfect timing. And pulling that off is very satisfying. Well, it's that exact principle that Sonic was meant to build upon. It's supposed to emphasize THAT feeling in particular. The character has a high potential for speed, but you're not expected to reach that potential right away. Instead, you slowly get better at achieving that flow state as you master Sonic's nuanced physics and complex level design. That's why the games are short, and every stage has multiple pathways, where the harder ones to reach are usually the fastest or provide more goodies. Don't feel bad about taking the game more slowly at first and exploring the stages, though: after all, learning the game and figuring out the fastest route is part of speedrunning, too. I know the marketing pushes the GOTTA GO FAST aspect of the character, but going fast is **not** the main objective of the game, it's the ultimate end goal after you've mastered the game. Of course, not everyone has that speedrunner's mentality, so it's not for everyone; some people just want a game they can pick up, play once, and get the full experience, but that's not what classic Sonic is. So if you feel like you're not getting the full experience when playing the game for the first time, that's because you *aren't*, and that's by design. (In fact, one of the reasons the series struggled in its middle years was the difficulty of balancing Sonic's classic design philosophy with the changing demands of consumers, who would no longer be satisfied with shorter, highly-replayable games.)
Omgosh, the nostalgia is so strong. Hearing that classic Sonic theme, seeing those levels in the various games. Sometimes I just wish I could go back 30 years to my childhood and experience all of those classics again for the first time. It's sad that we only get one "first time" experience with things.
Oh this was painful. Maybe you two should've had your special guest in this episode to help explain things. This is like a Game Grumps Sonic video where they go in completely clueless and end up complaining the whole time. I hope the whole week isn't like this video. :(
The airplane is the Tornado! The first one is Sonic’s and the second one is Tails. Tails is usually seen being the pilot, but on the rare occasion Sonic will be the pilot. Tails is Sonic’s best friend/adopted little brother. The Government is called G.U.N (Guardian Units of Nations)
I love that you went all in on this haha. I think the biggest issue with Sonic for non-fans is the confusing misdirection of speed vs exploration. The earlier games are designed to encourage exploration. But they market it as being speedy. It was really poor marketing on their part, as most of the time in the Genesis games the bet experience is when you play it like an exploratory platformer rather than a speed runner. Also, I'm sure many clarified, but Eggman and Robotnik are the same. Eggman was always his Japanese name. Robotnik was our localized name. 👍🏾
Also in Sonic Mania, if you're playing single player there is a way to have Sonic grab onto Tails' hands and fly. If you jump while holding up, Tails will start to fly. If you then jump into Tails, you'll grab him. Then I think you gotta mash the jump button to get him to keep flying.
Sonic Colors has a pretty bad reputation amongst Sonic fans these days. It has a lot of gimmick puzzle levels and most of the game is in 2D. Best Sonic game to start with is Sonic Generations. It gives you both the 2D and 3D experience, and it has no gimmicks like the Werehog.
Regarding Knuckles also! In Sonic 3, Eggman met Knuckles first and tricked him into thinking Sonic was a bad guy. Near the end Eggman betrays Knuckles and then Knuckles helps Sonic beat Eggman. On from that game, they're like friendly rivals.
"You can see his brain inside his head!" "Is he gonna kiss her now?! Is the kissing starting now?!?!" - Krysta, 20XX "WHY ARE YOU DOING?! GO! JUST GO!!!" "It takes time to drown. That's our PSA for today." - Kit, 20XX
1, 2, 3&K, Mania are all incredible games. Generations was fun... the rest I haven't gotten on with! Your takes on these games are definitely something!
I love whenever Kit & Krysta do the hand gestures the characters do in the 3D games. Also yes, Sonic Adventure 1&2 are fun and weird and we'd love to see you play them more! :3
We hope you all enjoy Sonic Week! With this video we clearly had a lot of questions about these games, so please leave any helpful info in the comments!!
It's gonna be a very intresting week!🤣
Okay, to answer a few of your questions:
1. Robotnik and Eggman are the same person
Try to keep both mediums separate.)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles was originally supposed to be 1 huge game, but the developers behind Sonic 3 only had 9 months(!) to make the whole game, so they came up with the idea of splitting the game into 2 cartridges.
Btw, Sonic fans would probably recommend you different versions of games, so... just in case you needed more insight what they may recommend, I'll say it ahead in time:
- Sonic 1, 2, 3&K and CD all had better remasters done partially/entirely by fans, though they're all a bit hard to set up, let me know if you still would like to know. ^^
- Sonic Adventure 1's rereleases have all ruined the original game's presentation by introducing downgrades to its visuals and glitches.
@@ABlob Respect, my homie ✊
To answer one of your questions, Sonic gave Dr. Robotnik the insulting nickname of Dr. Eggman, but Robotnik embraced it. This is covered in Sonic Frontiers in the egg memos. They’re worth a listen if you play it on stream. They’re one of the best parts of the game! Anyway, incredible video and I hope you enjoy your deep dive into the wonderfully strange world of Sonic!
Apologies if someone’s already explained this but, the branching paths are essentially for the various skill gaps and replay ability . Low path = beginners
Middle path = normal
High path = experienced players.
It means that a wide variety of players can play the same level and nobody is left feeling short changed.
I wish they utilized this for multiple exits. The formula is built for for that.
I always felt like I was missing out while running along the bottom path. I've never enjoyed a Sonic game, but that's fine, there are a lot of games out there.
I never knew that 😂😂😂
I always thought bottom paths is for experienced players, way more dangerous stuff happens at the lower floors in Sonic games more enemies, spikes, bottomless pits lol
@@malimaui2802 Those things are on the bottom path to slow down your pacing, in Sonic games speed is a reward for being good.
Eggman/Robotnik is the same situation as Peach/Princess Toadstool. The character had a distinct name in the US that got phased out years later for their original Japanese name.
Like Bowser being called "Koopa" in Japan
He will always be Dr. Robotnik to me.
I get that it's not everyones cup of tea, and that's okay, but it's also worth mention it out for a more understanding perspective on it
20:07 You guys just described Shadow's entire backstory and had 0 idea
My thoughts exactly
The Sonic & Knuckles content was basically meant to be part of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but the development team ran out of time. So Sega released Sonic 3, then released Sonic & Knuckles as a special cartridge that let you plug Sonic 3 (or even Sonic 2) on top of the & Knuckles cart. That let you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles together, and it also let you play as Knuckles in all the Sonic 3 levels (or in Sonic 2, if you plug in that cart). At the time, it was really neat tech!
Interesting (but confusing)!
@@kitandkrysta It was basically DLC.
@@noneofyourbusiness1998 "analog DLC" if you will ! :P
The lack of the spin attack during the playthroughs of the 2D games gave me anxiety.
As a huge Sonic fan this whole video is physically painful to watch
Krysta doing Sonic's win animation from Sonic Adventure needs to be a gif
I haven’t seen these guys since Nintendo minute and seeing them start a week of content based around my favorite franchise was a great suprise
If you plug in a 2nd controller at any time anyone can play as tails while the other is sonic....You guys could have done Co-op in all the 2d games.
There are two mistakes I see people do when trying to play the original three 2D Sonic games for the first time:
Was anyone else hoping they’d stumble onto the checkpoint bonus games by accident?
It's kind of painful for them to keep missing them.
I think Krysta was trying to get one in Sonic Mania, and that's why she kept going back around the spiky bridge. But by the time she actually made it there, it was gone and she didn't know what she was doing.
@@DaNintendude nah I think she was trying to ride the pendulum on top of the spiky log
Sonic CD had a time travel mechanic that is what the past and future sign posts were for. 🙂
You didn't spin dash once for 35 minutes, then in Sonic Mania you spin dash and say "Oh, that same old move"... WHAT?! Did you know the whole time?
I would love to watch a full adventure 2 playthrough with you two honestly
Feels like these two aren't even giving the games a chance and keeping a closed mind. I mean, what's the point?
Y’all are so impatient with these games
Kit just dying of laughter at the beginning of 06 🤣
Hilarious!
Kit not understanding replayability lol
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are some of my fave games! I'd be stoked to watch you guys do a let's play of those
Yes Kit, Robotnik and Eggman are the same person 😂
I think you are missing the fundamental design philosophy of Sonic games. Especially early Sonic games, when kids only had a handful of games and didn’t have access to a huge variety of games like today, you would play a game over and over again. Sonic levels provide a variety of paths you can take, and each time you play you learn new ways to go and perfect your route until you can beat levels in record time. They’re more about speedrunning than going around and exploring.
You guys can like…play the game in full you know
As someone who grew up with classic, this kinda hurt 😬
Someone knowledgeable guiding you two would have done wonders.
To do this, hold the Jump button again mid-jump.
bro GO OUTSIDE
If you chose "Sonic & Tails" on Sonic 2, you both could have (mostly) played together!
(You'll understand the 'mostly' if you play it lol)
I feel like kit just has to put more time into understanding the games, then he'll start to like them more
I get so frustrated when I see people play early Sonic but never roll
I just have two things to say:
1. As a near lifelong fan of the Sonic franchise, I am really happy and thankful you guys are finally giving the games a fair shake
Another comment probably answered this but Eggman captures animals to power his robots and one of Sonic's goals is to save them
Gonna edit this comment with info for questions you two had as I watch through
Eggman vs Robotnik is kind of like a Koopa vs Bowser thing, it was a regional name thing.
Krysta seemed so disappointed when she finally got the joke.
Sonic CD: When you run fast enough you move into the past of the future. To get best ending you have to go into the past in seven worlds and destroy seven generators Eggman created. The planet you're on has time travel, you see, and exists in multiple times at once.
PLaying Sonic games? GOTTA GO FAST...*so we can be done with it* lol
Whether you like the Sonic games themselves or not... their soundtracks are just a bop (particularly the Genesis games), you have to admit
You guys gotta play Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) & Sonic Riders!
If you guys liked Sonic Colors, you should definitely play Sonic Generations. It’s essentially the best moments from every sonic game with the gameplay of Colors
So, kid Kit got lost too much as a kid and he hated the series forever? That's my guess for the big later reveal.
You should've definitely played the original Wii version, the Ultimate version is horrible. xD
I get the feeling that Sonic Manis was built for the Sonic fans, but not newcomers to the franchise, based on the reactions here.
I love the comment section today. What an incredible gift K&K have given us by taking this on all week!
Can’t believe they played the ultimate version of colors and it came with a background glitch to the colors lol.
Loving the get up guys, was just like Sonic and Tails were hosting the show hehe! Looking forward to the week!
Of all the videos I've seen on this channel, this has to be the most painful to sit through. Not even gave most games a fair shake, just "I don't like this, move on."
This video should be called “Poorly playing Sonic.”
The environments in tropical resort of sonic colors looks broken. Some of the environments they zoom through look completely white and has no lighting.
Oh, the lighting not existing is normal for Colors Ultimate (because they never ported the lighting over from the original Wii version), but the white parts are absolutely a bug.
In Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Knuckles started as a enemy because Eggman lied to Knuckles about Sonic. Also, when Sonic becomes gold, he's Super Sonic.
This fills the gap Conan's Clueless Gamer left. 😂
If you're willing, I'd recommend revisiting these w/ someone who's knowledgeable about the series.
Kit laughing at the Sonic 06 opening is so relatable.
Thanks for doing the work. I’ve never felt motivated to play a sonic game for longer than 5 minutes.
I recommend Sonic Heroes!!! Very fun and unique gameplay and my favorite sonic game
music is also a banger
I have great memories with Sonic Heroes but the physics were really rough! But then if it didn’t bother them in the Adventure games… lol. Grinding could have been way more fun if it wasn’t so easy to miss the rail.
2:42 that's right Krysta. These games are EXTREMELY replayable.
I feel immense pain watching this
Would've loved to see you guys try Sonic Rush. Still my favourite Sonic game and the soundtrack slaps.
I loved Sonic Adventure (1 & 2) Chaos consumed dozens of hours of my life - if not more. I played so much Sonic to play the Chao minigame and I KNOW I am not alone.
Yeah same here. Every game ever should have a chao garden tbh
Never knew Kit could do such a stellar Bernie Sanders 29:05 😂
Sonic gameplay is jarring at first, especially in 3D, but once you get the hang of the controls and give it some more time, you start appreciating it a little more 🙂
should have given Generations a try. it's arguably one of the best games and covers both 3D and 2D playstyles
Oh no! They don’t know how to spin dash or curl into a ball, I really hope they don’t go the entire video without knowing TT^TT
Yeah... it was pretty painful every time they went back to build up speed for a loop in Sonic 2
The Eggman!
“It looks cool, but am I actually playing it?” *dies instantly*
This was a lot of fun to watch lol.
36:26 There is second player where you can play as Tails but typical Kit not letting Krysta have the chance =P
Man the nostalgia with that first level in SA 2
I'd definitely recommend playing through Adventure! I dunno how much you'll like Adventure 2 as a whole because it makes you play through other types of stages like mech shooter stages and treasure hunting stages, meanwhile in Adventure 1 you can choose to play those by selecting the robot character for the mech shooter stages or Knuckles for the treasure stages. But if you only want to play the speed stages, then you can just play Sonic and still have a good time!
(also if you wanna play more of Colors, Colors Ultimate isn't too bad for a first playthrough but if you can help it maybe play the Wii version instead.)
Glad to see you guys are giving Sonic a shot!
Sonic 2 came out first. Donkey Kong Country came out 2 years later.
A bit late (or maybe more than a bit late), but there's something I want to emphasize here:
Sonic (or at least classic Sonic) isn't really about *speed*, it's more about *speedrunning*.
First time I see something about Sonic '06 and oh boy what a ride that game is
Loved the video! Looking forward to the rest of the week :)
About the plane. For some reason, Sonic owned a plane. Tails just kinda took over flying the plane after he met Sonic lol.
This video should be shown as proof of why Sonic will never be greater than Mario.
"You can see his brain inside his head!"
"Is he gonna kiss her now?! Is the kissing starting now?!?!" - Krysta, 20XX
"WHY ARE YOU DOING?! GO! JUST GO!!!"
"It takes time to drown. That's our PSA for today." - Kit, 20XX
1, 2, 3&K, Mania are all incredible games. Generations was fun... the rest I haven't gotten on with! Your takes on these games are definitely something!
FINALLY. Sonic Week is here!!
I love whenever Kit & Krysta do the hand gestures the characters do in the 3D games. Also yes, Sonic Adventure 1&2 are fun and weird and we'd love to see you play them more! :3
