EDIT: I am so sorry I forgot to add the name of the app that displays CAD models in AR!
The app displayed in the video is called 'CADDY' and can be found on the app lab section of the Meta app store, I highly recommend giving it a whirl

The Valve Index is going on 5 years of age. Took long enough for Meta to catch up to it. But yeah, I think the Quest 3 is finally arguably a better headset overall. And I say arguably because it still depends on your use case. The Index is still a better platform for FBT, making the Index still better for VRChat. Basestation tracking still offers superior performance and Quest 3 still has significant latency for PCVR, making the Index still better for competitive FPS. And the Index still has better audio, though Quest 3 has gotten closer.
But those lenses on the Quest 3. They're so good. And the most aged part of the Index is the resolution of its panels. The visual quality of the Quest 3 is superior. So it depends on what you value most.

    • @silis4645
      @silis4645 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I don't really like the "took meta long enough to catch up" like that's a bad thing? Meta was never trying to compete with the index it was trying to sell a cheap standalone device that targets a market outside the index 1000$+ pc required ecosystem. And not only did they do that and do it well... but while still staying in their cheap, quest standalone/hybrid headset lane they just happened to catch up to the valve by simply just slowly improving their technology overtime while valve has sat o their hands all these years. Meta was never trying to compete with valv but Meta ended up on the same level as them because valve seems to not care enough to stay ahead of Meta or any other competitor in the vr space. And as meta continues to improve their technology the fact their 550$ headset is going round for round with valves 1000$+ eventually meta is gonna beat them out in every category while its also hundreds of dollars cheaper. So as opposed to "it took meta long enough to catch up" it's more so "how did valve let meta catch up when meta wasn't even trying to compete in their space in the first place"

As someone who has bought a valve index recently, I truly think it is still worth it (depending on what you’re looking for ofc).
I personally enjoy the extreme audio quality (both sound and microphone), the knuckle controllers, and the comfortable head strap. I also fully play pc vr, and I genuinely prefer a cable.

No more Meta software crashing my game or not working or having to replug or restart my PC. I couldn't go away from base station tracked after just now getting it, everything works flawlessly. Quest Pro Controllers with the Quest 2 or 3 is a pretty good beat saber setup by the way. Those controllers each have three cameras and can basically track themselves, even fully behind your back. They're not cheap though. It's handy when setting up a specific play place would depend on who's in what room at the moment to avoid tagging someone.

    @taytayaxolatte 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

i struggled with whether i wanted this or the quest pro for a long time... obviously the quest 3 is better, but the quest pro has one advantage the quest 3 doesnt, which is face tracking. sure, face tracking is niche and it doesnt really matter, but the issue with vr is theres not a ton of games on it, and most people will end up just not playing vr but every once in a while. the exception to this is games like vrchat. in vrchat the quest pro is significantly better than the quest 3, because the face tracking adds sooo much personality and interaction to the game. if youre looking into getting a new headset, and you mostly play vrchat, or youre mostly only interested in vrchat, the quest pro is 100% the better option no questions asked. you will come to regret not getting it over the quest 3 eventually, if you stick with VR. the quest pro has enough processing power and good enough resolution and lenses to make normal vr games still enjoyable, while having the added benefit of a form of tracking that is very rare and highly impactful in the vr space atm. we had the mouth tracker for a while from vive, but its discontinued for some reason so thats no longer an option, and sure there is diy eye tracking u can do, but that isnt exactly easy to accomplish lol.
so yeah, while the quest 3 is definitely the best all rounder for likely a while, for people like me who are more interested in the social aspect of vr, the quest pro is the best headset on the market right now. even better than the super expensive multi thousand dollar headsets out there.

It started hurting me badly after 3minutes of playing and the tracking was subpar to the index. And on that note, the contolers felt line holding a bar of soap instead of a natural hand exention. You can use index controllers on a Quest and i would say its an essential upgrade along with a new facial interface and head strap. Keep in mind at the end youre looking at well above 1200€ (in Sweden) if you want it to be a solid upgrade over the index in everything except for just and only the screen resolution and lenses.
I ended up keeping my index.

Barely played on my index since it was too hard to setup. Sometimes the drivers just wouldn't boot up right or something and they cable needed to be hanged on the ceiling every time.
Also the y splitter broke for no reason, since I'm very careful, and I had to RMA the headset once due to some kind of strange haze in the lenses. Qc is just bad, which I was prepared for in the forums.
The fov is great, but the sharpness and godrays are awful on the the index. All in all a bad experience.
I really liked the sound quality and really miss the speakers, but the quest is almost better in every category for me and at half the price!
I now play within a minute totally wirelessly on steamvr without any problem and even the fov and comfort are perfect with some aftermar
    aftermarket accessories.
Only upgrades for me would be micro oled with the same resolution, few degrees more horizontal fov (vertical is already into the sky and I don't need to see my feet), same index audio and maybe a lower encode/decode time to drop the latency just a tad (I'm below 40ms anyway).

question, as a sim-gamer, i use vr always in a seated position, either in a virtual racecar or a combat aeroplane, i've currently been doing that on a valve index for the last 4 years, and i want to upgrade my experience this year. the issue lies in the choice... there's nothing really out there that makes perfect sense to me. bigscreen beyond is too personal as i do like to share my vr experiences with friends. pimax crystal is a big question mark in terms of reliability, build quality and i honestly can't get over the fact there needs to be a charged battery installed when playing on cable. i had my eye on a varjo aero, especially with the pricedrop but since that's being discontinued, i have my reservations if i'll even find one available by the time i get to click the add to cart button. this quest 3 peaked my interest lately, i've not had any standalone vr experiences yet, might be fun, performance seems adequate, yet it doesn't tick all the boxes for me, there's features i could do without like the standalone and mixed reality camera's, but it lacks features i'd prefer like foveated rendering, eye tracking, resolution seems a tad on the low side, framerate too.
if i could list up my perfect VR HMD:
    -120hz
    -2400x2400 per eye minimum res
    -eye tracking and foveated rendering
-outside in tracking using base stations
-cabled only, no battery's to charge
    -index like audio and mic
-no personalized, made to fit, so easily shareable with friends
    -aspheric lenses for optimum clarity
id be willing to put down 1500 buckaroos for a unit like that.
seems like the dissapearing varjo aero was the most suited to my likings...

      @MBaderson  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sim-gaming is a tough situation to choose a headset for at the moment... Personally I still mostly use my Index for things like DCS purely because it gives me a package that is more suited for sitting at your desk with PCVR on. The Quest 3 is definitely a grab-and-go beast for those that want a bit of everything but a jack of all trades is a master of none and that kind of applies to your use-case.
This comment alone got me on a path today to maybe cover a video on the disappearing Varjo Aero and why it does indeed still have a place in the VR market, I'll see what I can do on this but for now I cannot recommend much for you specifically and would personally wait for the right package to arrive as this year may show some bangers in the headset space!

I'm the same way, I love my Q3 but I had to buy so much extra shit to make it comparable. New router just so wireless has the fidelity of wired (still has compression tho), had to buy VD because the default link sucks, had to buy a BOBO headstrap because the default is garbage in comfort compare to index (not to mention extra battery packs because it dies in a couple hours where my index I can play all day long), had to buy the hand straps because I can't go back to not being able to release my grip if I want to.
And then there's the subpar audio, I love music and playing beat saber and it's so flat. It probably wont matter for most but I'm the kinda person that put a 1k$ sound system in my car, I like high quality sound and the index headset is up there in quality with my sennheiser headphones. And then theres the tracking, I'm sorry but going back and forth between the two is a noticeable difference in my performance in FPS VR games. It doesn't bother me for 95% of applications, but it's kinda annoying in PVP knowing it could be that slightly bit better so I find myself still using my index for those certain things.
And like I said I don't hate it, I'm not trying to be a fanboy clinging on to the index, the wireless is great, the pancakes are amazing, theres a lot to love, but in my household both get used all the time (especially since my SO and I both play together)

I have a question, I just recently jumped down the rabbit hole of VR headsets looking for one for myself and my family. It seems like the 2 options right now that are tied is the Valve Index and Quest 3. I don't know which one to get, as someone who games on a pc a lot the 2 hour battery life on the quest seems really awful, but the resolution and pancake lenses seem to trump the Valve index.
Though the Valve index with the Index controllers and base stations for tracking seem to be way ahead of the Quest controllers and tracking. Could I get the Quest 3 and get the Index controllers and base stations and use them with the quest 3, do they work well together?
Or would be it more beneficial to just get the Valve Index and lose some resolution in the lenses for the FOV/quality of the headset and PCVR?

PS: I realize that this choice for me would be so much easier if there was a store nearby that had all VR headsets or at least the popular ones on display to test, but to my knowledge I have yet to find any such place that would have this, Arcade or gaming store. I've seen a few that have the Quest demos but nothing showing Valve Index to compare the 2. So im stuck diving down the rabbit hole of Videos and articles trying to piece together which would be better for myself. Its been interesting So thanks again for the video and any help you or anyone else could provide :D

A very common problem these days and if you are asking what my opinion would be I would advise looking more towards the Quest 3. The price/spec balance is much better with a newer headset like that one and as much as I am a big fan of the Valve Index it just isn't worth the full price anymore in today's day and age with the new tech coming and going quickly for 5 years since its release.
A Quest 3 will just give you everything you need to get started and even though there will always be drawbacks with every headset I think overall it offers the best package for the price and it is a solid gateway to venturing further into the VR hobby.
As for glasses I would think they won't be too much of a bother with the eye relief options on the facial interface and otherwise there are really good accessory manufacturers making plenty of options for the Quest lineup also with custom prescription lenses. Using Index controllers is very possible with basestations and a few programs to make it work in tandem, hook the Quest 3 up to a powerbank and you can get some more PCVR joy out of it too, but I would think this an option after orientation on the basics first.
This is all, ofcourse, just a suggestion based on my own experiences with both but it seems to fit the bill in terms of what you mention as of now. Upgrades can always happen down the line and starting with a cheaper option really helps find your footing in the VR hobby without spending too much just for it to gather dust, combine that with the versatility and ease of sharing it with others like family member and I believe it to be a solid package!
If I ever could I would absolutely put up a storefront exactly as you mentioned to put headsets up for trying as this was also my problem at the start and no one can have the exact same experience so you only truly know once you try... But I do hope this info helps you on the way to making a decision!

@MBaderson Thank you so much for all the information. I think you are right. For the price, the features, the resolution, the quest 3 seems unmatched.
With that in mind a couple more questions regarding the headset and PCVR. Do you have any good recommendations for a power bank for the Quest 3, something you have used/liked to use with it and possibly a recommendation for a 3rd party head band, have read a bunch of different things saying the headband that comes with it is very uncomfortable. When using the quest 3 for PCVR what method do you recommend to connect the headset to pc. Quest link, Virtual desktop or steam link?
Thank you again for the help!

The title of your video got my attention. The Quest3 also replaced my Valve Index (which replaced my HTC Vive). There's no getting around the fact that tethered PC VR has greater potential than self contained -- more power, more CPU, more GPU. It's a no brainer. However, in the practical real world, my Vive and Index were frequently temperamental. Being an IT professional, I was able to make quick work of fixing issues, but it was obvious that PC VR was not friendly with computer illiterates. And darned expensive to get into. $2,500 for an Index and a marginally capable Alienware PC back in the day. Lighthouse tracking will always be better -- on paper. In my gaming area, I have several very large windows that cause lots of IR reflections and the expected tracking problems. In practical use, the Quest3 tracking has been very impressive. Yes, it has the potential for occlusion. If playing Twister VR, this may be an issue.
'Still no fan of Zuckerberg or Facebook in general, however he's all-in on VR and they gots some cash! To properly get into the Quest3 isn't cheap since one should really spend the extra for the 512GB model and a headstrap with replaceable batteries. If asked to use one word to describe why the Quest3 replaced my Index: Versatility.

@@MBaderson You did an awesome job yourself. It was comforting to find I wasn't alone in retiring my Index for (gulp!) a Meta product. It's a darned good product though! The Quest3 and all of its potential really renewed my interest in VR. My Index had sat unused for a while because it just took awhile to get going. Also, there was no casual Index usage like I can with the Quest3. The resolution is soooo good, and the built in browser allows for web surfing (not to mention the TH-cam app). Web surfing was something I did not do on the Index. I have Virtual PC, but it was easier just to grab my tablet than to set up my Index. 2024 is going to be a transformative year for VR. Something that really should have happened about 4 years ago. Development has been slow. Upside: Index held its value MUCH longer than expected.

I've been slowly upgrading my Vive (which I got used off a local) to Index controllers and now an Index HMD that's refurbished (with a 2-year replacement plan) but I'm coming to realize immediately the technical issues and I'm not computer literate.
First I saw what looked like rainbow graphical tears (rainbows of pixels) spewing from items like rays of light from buttons/etc. in my initial Steam Home boot. I updated my SteamVR (and clicked something to update it from Vive to Index stats) and it mostly went away so I assumed it wasn't major. Also noticed what I assume is an optical illusion of what I call "horse blinds" where black semi-circles pop up in the corners of my vision but go away if I look at them (I have the lenses all the way forward). Just a few days ago I tried running Lethal Company in VR and the right eye went black and I tried resetting the HMD but have not been able to get it to connect since. I get the "headset display not connected" error and it flickers and fluctuates between being an outline and being fully filled in like it's being detected. I don't know what to do so I guess I'm stuck trying to use that replacement plan. I hate Facebook/Meta but I have to admit Quest 3 is starting to look tempting even though I love the FOV and controllers.

I hear ya on FOV. I gotta say, I didn't notice any difference in FOV reduction on the Quest3. I DID notice the resolution is just... better. By a lot.
I've seen sleeves you can put the Quest3 controllers in to mimic the fit of the Index controllers (Index controllers are niiiiice). I don't recall having many games that took advantage of the individual fingers on the Index controllers.
I have no regrets a'tall on going to Quest. The fact that Zuck's deep pockets are behind it will ensure it stays relevant for some time.

@@darrcook1 I really appreciate the insights (and from Michael as well)!
I don't think I've seen any games make actual use of the finger tracking either (plus my hands naturally slide down sometimes so it often does the wrong finger(s) as well). I can flip off monsters in some games (like Labyrinthine) and VR Chat has gestures but doesn't take much advantage of tracking. It's really disappointing. I don't think I've seen games take advantage of the levels of grip other than the tech demo, either. My love of the Index controller mostly just amounts to me loving the fact I can let go and not lose the controller, which is huge for things like throwing grenades/knives or dropping items.

On virtual desktop, high bit rate the clarity basically matches the index while having more ghosting and breakdown under quick movement. I would never recommend the index over the q3, it's not worth the price over it, but for an index owner unless wireless or portable vr is important, it's a side grade at best.

For any index users in the comments:
In my opinion, the quest 3 is still not as good as the index. While the displays are higher resolution, the screen door effect on the index is so good that the extra resolution is not noticeable in most games. Also, an upgrade headstrap is definitely necessary, as it is painful to wear without one. When you add up the cost for good accessories to make the quest 3 a comfortable usable headset, It turns into a $600-$900(headstrap, facial interface, battery pack[extras are controller grips, index dongles, etc]) headset rather than a $500 headset. If you use steamvr daily, its hard to justify the compression and long start up time, compared to turning on the controllers and waiting 5 seconds for the index to boot. The quest 3 is a good headset. The user just needs to have a focus on the standalone and MR aspects to make it worth an upgrade from an index.

The quest 3 clears pretty much every statistic over the Index. Nothing about the index wins over the Q3 aside from the lack of steamvr tracking, causing playspace desync occasionally.

Good point, I know Meta recently involved upper body tracking from within the headset and it includes leg estimation but there is variety of choice when it comes to Quest options for FBT, maybe I could do a video on that some time to revisit the subject matter

@@MBaderson yea i mean it was a rethorical question. If you want FBT, then a native PCVR headset with Vive/Tundtra Trackers is still the best option.
But the new Vive Ultimate Trackers seem interesting with their inside out tracking though.

Yah, I can't believe anyone would buy an Index now, especially for the continued baffling price of it. I guess there are still enough dummies out there buying it, or Gabe is just so stinking rich, he doesn't care. It should have dropped to half the price. Even then I'd still get a Q3.

Honestly, for the price, even the quest two is better than the valve index. I had the headset for about four years and recently replaced it with a big screen beyond and holy hell, micro oled need to become standard in VR headsets

I bought the quest 3 and had the index for some years. I dont know man.. the quest 3 is imo far superior to the index besides the tracking and fov. Its lighter, it doesnt have that ugly ass lenses which distort light and just make everything look worse than it actually is. The Q3 offers smooth graphics and air link. I dont need anything to use it with my computer. It doesnt heat my face up at all and there are so many accessories, you simply are able to make it your own just because of that. Just wifi. And it works. Great.
