    I bought a Meta Q3. He’s 100% right. This thing is so much sharper than any headset I’ve tried. It’s what I thought VR would be like back in 2018.

      I had a go on a VR headset a few years ago, wasn't impressed, my eyes just couldn't adjust at all. Assumed that would always be the case until I was around my friends on Friday and he had a meta pro from his work. Put it on and

      @@onlytixer yes I bought a Q3 512, I wanted it for online sim racing, but then took it back 9 days later as the integration for PCVR is terrible and I couldn't get it to work consistently.
      Will go back and buy one again in a few months time though, hopefully the integration will be much improved by then. When it worked it was the best sim experience I've had.

    Valve Index was released over three years ago, actually about at the same time as Quest 1. But Valve still charges the same price for it, and with the arrival of Quest 3, it's clear that the index is indeed outdated. I got a Quest 3 today for development purposes, paid by my employer. Very sharp image!

    • @Enverex
      @Enverex 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Getting closer to 5 years now, not 3! But yeah, it's odd that Valve never dropped the price at all. Even the Quest 2 looks visually better (when running at proper resolution) with much wider sweet spot, but the Index still survives on because how it's generally good "all round". Hopefully we get something as good all-round in the future soon with the upgraded visuals.

    • @exodous02

      Even with the outdated tech Valve probably looses money, they aren't a big company. They make up the profit on Steam sales, much like the Steam Deck. I really think the only reason it is still available is for people that for whatever reason need it. It's over priced but it is cool to see Valve support it until they release something better. In the Sadly It's Bradly live steam with his Apple Vision Pro he says he's not even excited for the Deckard anymore. Don't think it's happening. They don't need it, they loose on hardware, I think the only reason they made the Index was to set a standard for everyone else, which oddly no one has as good audio, mic, and needs third party straps to be as comfortable. Apple is now the standard, if new headsets come out that don't have the same or better visuals or can not be complete monitor replacements what is the point?

    • @Enverex
      @Enverex 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@exodous02 Nothing that costs $3500 and has no access to the most commonly used content is going to be "the new standard". The Deckard also now has patents for a split design so not sure why now of all times they'd think it's not happening.

    • @exodous02
      @exodous02 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Enverex I hope it is. When the AVP was announced I got excited because Valve and Apple had a revolving door with their engineers, probably to help Apple get the AVP out the door. I thought this would mean Valve would get a reliable supply of the same visuals that Apple was using. I'm still hopeful for this. Maybe they can't release the Deckard until 3, 6, or 12 months have passed? Apple wouldn't want direct competition. Valve has got to get something out of training their engineers in VR and letting them borrow their's. I hope it isn't just Steam will be the only gaming platform on the AVP, I really hope it is tech for the Deckard. The Lenses were pretty much all Valve was struggling with and now Apple has some pretty good lenses. Fingers crossed Valve gets them in the Deckard. I'd pay $3k for a Deckard but, eh, not Apple. I don't even own an iphone.

    • @exodous02
      @exodous02 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Enverex Huh, I thought I replied to you, sorry, I guess I didn't hit the reply button. Anyway, I really hope the Deckard is coming out. Actually I got excited when the AVP was announced. Sadly it's Bradley said he got some insider info that Valve and Apple were having a revolving door between the two companies engineers in their respective VR departments. I think realistically Apple could have gone with three companies to help with the problems they were having, bytedance, Valve, or Meta. They chose Valve for whatever reason, maybe because they didn't rely on Android ecosystem for a base? So Valve helped Apple get the AVP out the door so what does Valve get out of it? I really really hope they get the optics from the AVP for the Deckard, like a reliable supply of them. This seems to be the biggest thing holding back the Deckard. In fact I think, with a few of Valve's patents, they were thinking of making a computing device with the Deckard like Apple did with the AVP, more than any other company had before. I hope this is the case, maybe Apple just gave them a semi full of cash, enough to make their own optics, but eh, I don't think so. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be Steam officially on the AVP. I hope they get something for the Deckard out of the deal and about the only thing it has that Valve would want was the optics.

      @@markus301 I suggest trying the 8kx before buying if possible. I currently have both Q3 and 8kx and I made a hobby out of trying to get the optics ajustment right before accepting that it is simply bad design. The software is nothing short of a nightmare. Extremely unreliable. One day it works, next day it simply won't play along. If FOV is what you want, the valve index is not going to do it for you. It is very close to the quest 3.

  • @SargonDragon
    @SargonDragon 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Nobody talks about the latency on Quest 3 for PCVR. They only ever talk about the video compression artifacting. I agree with you that the visual quality is easily better than the Index. But the latency is a significant drawback in any kind of action game which can not be eliminated on Quest. It does not require "esports level of competition" for that difference to matter. It's a pretty big gap.
    I have the Index and the Quest 3 myself, and I've done a lot of A-B comparisons between them. I feel like you're playing up the weaknesses of the Index and downplaying the weaknesses of the Quest 3 in this video. You make some weird claims about tracking issues with the Index, and the comparison of tracking performance to the Quest 3 which I think most people who have used both will not agree with. This is not an area where the Quest 3 wins.
    I do agree with you about the vastly superior lenses of the Quest 3. Easily the strongest point of this headset. They're competitive even with the lenses on the Pimax Crystal (though the Crystal's higher resolution panels give it better visuals overall). The Quest 3 certainly does have better visuals than the Index. That is the aspect of the aging Index that has aged the most.
    But the overall comparison between the two headsets is a mixed bag. The Index is still better in every other performance category. So to say the Quest 3 destroys the Index is stretching things at best. It's going to depend on your use case and what aspects you value more.
    The significant latency of the Quest 3 for PCVR is arguably its weakest point when making this comparison.

      I just picked up the Q3 and have the Reverb G2. I'm still on the fence about keeping it though. I may return it. Why? Because you can't run it solely on the link cable. In other words if the battery is drained you can't run it on the cable alone. It has to have some charge to run. And even on the link cable the batttery will drain, slower but will still drain. I had to stop my sim session last night because the battery was to low and it shut down again even on the link cable. And yes I'm using 3.2 Gen 2 port on my pc.

    I just picked up a quest 3 but still prefer my pimax 5k+ for sim racing. Going from over 150 FOV to 110 is just not good enough for me anymore. Horizontal FOV is so important for immersion for me when racing. The Quest is definitely sharper but almost looked overshadowed/artificial to me? Still holding out for the mythical Pimax 12k.

      Image quality wise the Crystal is clearly better (anyone that says the contrary is objectively lying as the Crystal has much better screen panels and on top of it the image is native) but the Crystal is a little bulky and it takes some effort to adjust to it properly, so it's not surely a plug and play device as the Quest 3 is. Furthermore if you put so much emphasis strictly on edge to edge clarity (as GM does) then the Q3 has surely the better lenses (not by much but still better) of the two for that aspect (I believe that Meta has the best lenses of all the headsets right now for what it concerns edge to edge clarity).

    About the controllers and tracking. If you want better (more free) tracking and are as careless with your money as I am, I can recommend using the Quest Pro controllers with the Q3. They do their own tracking instead of being tracked by the headset, so you can use them freely - even behind your back. My only issue is that they sometimes don't reconnect after sleep and I have to restart the headset. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to avoid this but they seem to prefer to be left in the (extremely fiddly) charging dock - even when it's turned off - and only pick them up when there's a connection.

    The jitter you notice with the index is likely because the Lighthouses are bouncing off of something reflective and causing it to have to filter erroneous hits. I moved my lighthouses a bit (they were bouncing off of my glossy TV) and that jitter is completely gone.

(i never owned any VR headset before the quest 3 btw). i do feel like i wasted money buying the index, but at least i can use the basestations and controllers with the quest 3..

    Valve truly do take far too long between their releases of great things, whether with their games or with their hardware.
    15:16 is something I shout all the time and will continue to do. Valve introduced what should be the standard in VR audio for both comfort and quality. There's no room for discussion or arguments. It's just the fact.

    For a headset that's nearly 5 years old, it's insane that the Index still competes with (and beats, in several categories) a headset that released within the last 6 months like the Quest 3. The controllers are still the absolute gold standard for VR controllers, the headphones/speakers are still phenomenal (and far outstrip the Quest's tinny little speakers), tracking is still better, and it still gives a better out-of-the-box experience than the Quest does (for PCVR, that is) thanks to Meta setting most of the PCVR/Link defaults to weird values. The Quest does have higher resolution and a larger sweet spot, but it also has more problems with light leakage around the face mask no matter how I adjust it (at least mine does).
    The fact Valve that did such a good job with the Index, coupled with the rather insane updates they've been making to SteamVR here recently, makes me really excited to see what this rumored "Deckard" headset they're allegedly working on is going to be like.

Ive been completely spoiled by the near flawless wireless gaming of the Quest. I have tried wired a few times and it was absolutely terrible to experience once i had already gotten used to wireless. Its a true game changer. Every headset from here on out has to be wireless IMHO. Also, i HATE and despise Meta but love Valve, so if im saying this, then you know it means a lot 😅

    Big screen beyond is my go to sim racing vr headset. I've ditched my aero for it. The oled panels are unreal even at 75hz, slightly lower fov than the quest 3 but the comfort is unmatched.
    But.....The quest 3 lenses are the best you can get right now, you do get a bit of glare in the beyond but when racing you don't notice it.
    I sold my index as it was just sitting on a shelf for 3 years. Index controllers are still being used with the beyond.
    I'm 3 or 4 months into using the beyond and I have zero issues. It's a wonderful HMD

    Great video GM! I love the effort you put into describing this. Thanks!
    Not a fan of the Oculus headsets. I used to have a Rift S, but I got a lot of VR sickness in that. I pushed through, because I had already bought it and really wanted to play VR and race in VR. Then they announced the whole having to link it to your Meta account thing and that pushed me over the edge to go for a Valve Index. That also immediately solved my VR sickness problems. Now, seeing all the trouble you have to go through to get the Quest 3 working properly for PCVR, I'd rather wait for an Index 2 to come out, before upgrading. Also, as long as the whole meta account thing is still a thing with oculus, I will not buy an oculus headset again.

    Great comparison. The biggest problem with the Index is it's resolution or lack of, after using other HMDs like the Quest 2, Reverb G2, Quest 3, etc, putting on the Index makes you feel like you just stepped into Screen Door Effect hell!
    Agreed, the audio of the Index is extremely good (same with the G2, same speakers).
    The main trick to any fresnel lens HMD is getting your eyes as close to the optics and the sweet spot as possible, it's the difference of looking at the sweet spot or looking INTO the sweet spot, once you are close enough to be able to look into the sweet spot, then things get much better for those optics.
    As for visual comparison, I think the Quest 3 is VERY close to the Reverb G2 for sim racing, each have their visual pros and cons, but from my experience with both, they are VERY close visually for clarity and overall beauty of the image, the Quest 3's edge to edge clarity is what makes it stand out over the G2. :)

    Love these kind of reviews, where someone actually shows how it looks instead of just talking about abstractions. So this feel genuine. I put a Q3 on yesterday in a store (saw only the demo mode) and all the stories about the colors being blend and the blacks not being really black (compared to Pimax or PSVR2)...I didn't see it. It was kind of the same like my Samsung LED-monitor color wise. Maybe better. The only set I put on until now is the HTC elite and to be honest, the image quality of the Q3 is soooo clear. Then again I never had on another headset besides these two so for me they are all amazing. Anyway, am I the only one who isn't bothered by the colors? Or would this be a reason for some to go for the PSVR2 or Pimax?

      @@reDrawn19 the thing is more contrast so if you tend to play horror games or dark games then the lack of contrast is noticable functionally bad.
      When it comes to colour the brain basically adjusts lots of things and it's all relative so when you have super vibrant TVs or settings it just starts to look average again lol and if you are always using something a bit dull like living in the UK it again just seems average after a while.

      @@GamerMuscleVideos Thanks for your reply! I am living in the Netherlands, does that also count when it comes to dull colors XD? There is one thing I am most interested in, because I want to connect it mostly to pc for pcvr: How have the issues with lagging been resolved over the period of one year with the Q3? In another video of youtuber Tyriel Wood 'Through the lenses' I saw the PSVR2 was more smooth, while the Q3 wasn't, but I don't know if this was because of the camera was just bad at capturing the image. I prefer a smooth experience first over additional sharpness. And graphics wise I wonder how it translates raytracing, because I make applications with Unreal5 and want to test test them with a vr-headset.

    Your glowing review of the Quest 3 might strike some folks who don't yet own one as a shill for your affiliate links, however all you say is absolutely correct and you are not hyping it. I had a Quest 2 and used it relatively infrequently due to all the ultimately frustrating shortcomings. I'm spending infinitely more time sim racing with the Quest 3. It's just a fantastic piece of kit and more than justifies the upgrade. With a really strong fiber internet connection (1 gig), I do wholeheartedly recommend Virtual Desktop, using the VDXR driver and H264+ format for the best possible bandwidth, plus Open Composite to side step Steam VR bloatware. I simply never even think about using a cable. I use the Quest 3 for iRacing, ACC, AC, AMS2 and Raceroom, plus Dirt Rally 2 once in a great while, and pretty much all in full detail on a decent but not mindblowing rig. I'd like to say rFactor2 as well, but the VR implementation is still utter pants unfortunately.

    What I hope Valve has cooking for us is a headset with the link that the Pico neo 3 has where it uses display port cable and or as standalone. If not they have to nail their steam link software as virtual desktop gives a higher quality output. If they give us more settings we can adjust with it where its just as good that will be perfect. Also hoping for Micro LED screens as they need something to stand out from the Quest 3 for competition. All in all Pancake Lenses and Micro OLED with increase FOV over the valve index with inside out tracking and they've pretty much got what we all want.

    i got my quest 3 two days ago and it is my first vr headset. im quite happy with it, but i have one big gripe with it.
    i dont know if thats the case on the other headsets too, but im very sour about the fact that you have to go through your battery pack to power it, id like to have a direct power port.
    the reason is that battery packs deteriorate relatively fast. my pc is like 8 years old and it runs like a champ, only had to upgrade my GPU once.
    i dont have much hope that i will have my quest 3 for the same amount of time because of the battery deterioration, yet the quest alone almost cost as much as a pc.

    I am a VRChatter with a Quest 2 and currently no full body. I also stream as well, so having a higher ppi is now a must. I have many friends (pcvr, same as me) who run index's and swear by them, but thats such a massive cost for what is, lets face it, last gen tech. With the advent of Slime VR Trackers coming within 90%+ of what vive trackers can produce at less than a quarter of the cost, I cannot find a reason NOT to upgrade to a Quest 3. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but if you have any thoughts to add here, I'd be more than happy to hear them. As a final note, I run over wireless via Steam Link, however I have my link cable plugged into a power strip to support my 5-10 hour sessions. I intend to get the newest version of the headstrap you have and a spare battery for "unlimited" cable free vr (slime trackers can be made to last many hours on a single charge with the right batteries).

My guess it's intentional that meta is doing this. They don't really want the Q3 to be a PCVR. They want you buying there replacement strap with battery or they want you spending money on Quest Apps that only runs on the device. It was so close to being all around budget headset if it was not for this link cable and charging issues you have to find a work around with.

      @@GamerMuscleVideos I’ll look into that one. Thanks. I already ordered the “Orzero Link Cable with Individual Type C Charging Port” on Amazon. Hopefully it works as well I heard some of these cable can burn your oculus port or they don’t get good data rates.

    I took the "gamble" and bought the Meta Quest 3. I couldn't have wished for a better purchase ;-) It's superb and so much better than my HP Reverb 2 V1.

    I’m scared of latency and compression especially since I’m using an AMD gpu… I have the 7800xt and it’s absolutely amazing with my valve index but I’m not sure how well it’ll work with meta

    Tried Quest3 sure its lenses are probably biggest selling point but ended up going with bigscreen beyond colors are far superior and it's much lighter albeit i am not a fan of the glare on the lenses. Not really sure what you are talking about Index being blurry it's sweet spot is very large compared to most headsets might be just a you issue other than that yes it is an old headset now most things are probably better purchase.

      @GamerMuscleVideos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can literally see how small the sweet spot is in the video. It's well known the index has a somewhat small sweet spot though bigger than some other HMDs , it's an issue with most headsets from last 4 or so years , it's not a "me" issue.
      Maybe your eyesight is not that good so you can't tell the difference between the sweet spot and non sweet spot which I think is quite common and why some people don't notice these things.

      @@GamerMuscleVideos Bro being youtuber does not make you a VR expert I think i am capable of seeing for myself that Index sweetspot is not a common complaint and i have 5 headsets myself to test with. So yes it it is more of a "you" issue and not something most people complain about.

    If you have a choice between new brakes or meta quest 3 which would you choose? I currently have fanatec v3 pedals but look to upgrade to simagic p1000 brake with hydraulics but i have being debating getting the quest 3 instead. Psvr2 in GT is great and just a got a PC with 3080 wanted try AC, ACC AMS2 and others in VR. You seem like you having fun with all these vid coming out almost everyday sometimes twice a day.

      Any load cell brakes from Csl V2 up work perfectly fine , so I'd go VR myself. I know people that are very fast in real.lkfe that use cheap load cells and they are fine.

      just things to consider
      If you get p1000 first you can resell your fanatec pedals and have funds to save toward a PCVR. Selling PS5 if you get to that point would also help plus save on no more cost of PSN.
      Even if you got a good used quest 2 it wouldn't be as difficult to also get the p1000 hydraulics and still arguably have a way better experience than using v3 and vr2.
      I have used quest 2 3070 and new vr2 and id say ams2 is a better experience in a lot of ways. I haven't played AC or ACC in vr yet so can't comment.
      I have V3 and used my friends p1000 they were a substantial improvement in every single way. I regret trying them because every time I use my v3 I just miss his pedals lol the v3 is more than enough forever
      Honestly you can't go wrong either way

      @@Rue2love I'm pretty sure if you want to use the knuckles you will need the base stations but the Quest 3 comes with controllers and in my opinion they are just as good if not better than the knuckles, they have finger tracking as well. Also the Quest 3 has hand tracking. It really does beat the Index hands down. I sold my Index as a complete kit and it paid for my Q3.

      @@Rue2love I cant find anything about using the knuckles except with a Q1 and 2 and in that case there are youtube vids on how to do it. I'm assuming you are buying a used Q3? So no controllers? Get the Quest 3 and try the knuckles - if it doesnt work follow the Q1 and 2 tutorials to pair them using a USB dongle. Thw Quest 3 is soo good you can use it in pitch black and somehow it still sees the controllers. Its amazing.
