    I have prepared the chorus for this opera twice in my career as Chorus Master- Indpls Opera.
    I have no words for this overpowering music.
    It was a great experience. Viele Dank-Herr Wagner

      Yes, but it only works in German. The treatment of the different voices must be the accord. For solo it can be done in the human voice and the orchester to achieve the tri-accord. That is why concert performance of Wagner NEEDS the Orchester. A piano recital will inevitably be off-key.

      My Drama teacher in high school, Vancouver, was chorus master for the VOA; that was in the 60s. I remember when he did this opera. Although Wagner was a horrrible, arrogant, IGNORANT (motifs had been used in art for at least three thousand years; he didn't invent them), little, little , little man, this is superb music (for Wagner, who wasn't a scratch on his hero, Beethoven). Had he lived for Nuremburg, he probably would have been hanged for inspiring nazism. He was a PIG (as his great-grandson, whose lecture I attended in Toronto, agrees). But thank you for your input, from the state once ruled by the Klan, HERR Schmid.

    Louder, louder, always louder - Wagner's demand of the orchestra & singers. Michael Rhodes warned - Don't sing Wagner if you don't have a voice of steel - it'll kill ya. That instruction was for soloists, but I figure that you could get away w. a "lesser" voice in the chorus. This piece has "cohones." I love it.

      @once a musician isn't Wagner and Bach just as "ancestral" and "collective" as the German atrocity of WWII? A brief glance at how Wagner was utilized in the Nazi rhetoric would show that being proud of the former would lead to guilt for the latter.

Confusing those two leads to all sorts of pitfalls, including mass production of corpses in the name of nonexistent greatness. • @thomasborgsmidt9801
      @thomasborgsmidt9801 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yes, if You consider the German language, which probably in the subjunctive case has overtones a fifth above the base. That is why Wagner is close to intranslatable to English (or Italian - for that matter - especially Italian that has "clean" overtones an octave higher). English is so poor in tonality.

      Twain was actually quoting Edgar Wilson "Bill" Nye. - "and it took me some time to get myself educated up to the point where I could enjoy Wagner. I am satisfied if I get it in the proper doses but I do feel about it a good deal as Bill Nye said. He said he had heard that Wagner’s music was better than it sounds." - Mark Twain 1902

    • @williamfulgham2010
      @williamfulgham2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree in terms of the caidence of the languages referenced. However in practical terms as far as what Samuel Clements had access to, one would have to raise the question of what actual performances he was able to hear back in his time, since there were no electronic reproductions. Of course if he was ever present in the audience of the Metropolitan Opera, he would have heard the worlds top most quality operatic presentations. We should be very proud of our Met because even in Mark Twain's day, the Met was considered an equal rival of anyting in Europe. In the current day language cadences, the UK's version of English has gotten so contorted that it is very difficult to sing UK English. That is the reason most British recording artists end up singing the American version of the English language.

    Re tge artist: I thought either Joseph Turner the great English artist, or possibly c
    Caspar David Friedrich...but I don't recognize it. The story is from a satirical novel by Heine, it is slightly ridiculous but I have always found this one of Wagner's most dynamic works. The idea is good. His main ideas were good. But he overdid things in other areas as has been mentioned and hence Nietzsche (once a big supporter) broke with him.

    Wagner is a paradox. He really was as morally ugly as man as you will ever hear of, with a mind full of hate and power fantasies. Yet some of the music is remarkably beautiful. This seems to be true from music throughout history -- several great rock musicians (I'm looking at you, John Lennon and Eric Clapton) have shown themselves to be real pieces of work off-stage.
    When I was growing up, there was a common theme stating that if you would not welcome a person as a dinner guest, then you should not invite them into your homes via TV. Fortunately people paid no attention to these campaigns, because most people have only a small type they would be comfortable with as guests. And some of these rat-b***ards have produced truly extraordinary art.

      It is commonly argued that negative characters in Wagner' s librettos (Mime in the "Ring", also the figure ?Beckmesser? in the "Meistersinger") are modelled after Jewish stereotypes (these sterotypes in fact often contain nearly any negative trait that could be thought of a human, in fact, in conspiracy theories etc nowadays negative figures in history are always claimed to be Jewish and vice versa - often with no evidence about the origins). Unfortunately, it seems that racist and anti-Jewish sentiments were mainstream views in the 19. and parts of the 20. century. Wagner, of course, held them, and in his essay about the Jews in the music, he claims that they are inferior, cherry picking and subjectively interpreting the capabilities of composers like Mendelssohn.
