This Soldier's Chorus is outstanding. I love watching it all the time. Thank you for this. I admire your opportunity to be in opera. I'm a U S Marine veteran. I have been in battle and have memorable experinces from traveling the globe during my career. I have my mom to thank for my love of music and opera. I played cello and bass in high school. Sometimes I wish I had turned my path toward a life of music and arts. But I graduated, just turned 18, and was ready for high adventure. I chose the Marine Corps. I knew there is a Marine Band. I was a good musician but not great. I couldnt blind read a piece of music and play on the spot. Silly me looking for adventure got to be an armored vehicle crewman. In my life of guns and dirt, I've always kept classical music and opera close to my heart. There are performances that make me tear up, that the singer becomes Isolde, or Brunnhilde, or the Commendatore. Thank you to all the singers and musicians that keep music alive from centuries ago. Thank you from my heart.

I love this soldiers chorus... it's reminds me of the days when I was in a high school choir more than a decade ago... this was prescribed once in a competition back then.
Quel frisson ! Quel élan patriotique ! Les Anglais ont Rule Britannia, nous avons ce choeur pour deuxième hymne ! Merci M. Gounod et merci à Plasson et au metteur en scène ! Sublime !!!! 1000 pouces levés...............
The "Soldiers' Chorus" is a powerful and memorable piece from Charles Gounod's opera "Faust." It's a rousing ensemble number that typically occurs in Act IV of the opera. The soldiers sing of their bravery and loyalty to their country, expressing their readiness to defend it at any cost. It's often performed with great energy and passion, making it a highlight of the opera.
Forty odd years ago I heard Ian Wallace sing this with the English facetious words beginning:' Oh Aunt Jemima, look at your Uncle Jim, he's in the fishpond learning how to swim! First he does the backstroke, then he does the side, and now he's under water swimming against the tide!' It brought the house down. It also locked the tune in my mind forever.
I was in. Chorale Society when I was in 11th grade, there were slightly more than a handful of teenagers, obviously an adult choir. The wonderful memories of performing this, I find this 11 years after it’s been posted, ironically it came up on my TH-cam after watching Dimash, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Thank you for the nostalgia ❤
A lot of french songs are perfect : music and text because they recount periods of misfortune or wars France has often been at war with its English or German neighbors !
My father used to sing "Old soldiers like the leg of a duck, Old soldiers like the leg of a duck And every Sunday morning you'd hear the officers say, Left, right, turn about, duck for dinner today!"
In isolation, this chorus is a brilliant musical work. The greatest operatic work of all time collectively, however, is Der Ring des Nibelungen. Or any of Wagner's works; they are interchangeable.
Fine chorus indeed - and those torches, if I'm not mistaken, are the stage-safe metal ones - if you drop them, or displace your hand, a spring sends a cover over the flame, extinguishing it. And they weigh a ton!
Old soldiers, marching off to war, Young soldiers, never been there before, Old soldiers get bloody great lumps of duff, But young soldiers don't get enough. Remembered by my grandfather, a young soldier who became an old soldier overnight in WWI
Wat een perfecte uitvoering van dit overbekende soldatenlied! Super performance, beautiful chorus, those men are actors as well. It must have taken a lot of time to get it on stage this way. N'aime pas la guerre, mais j'aime cette chanson de guerre, chanté par cette choir.
@Tomam001 I am a retired Fire Fighter- our training, over the years, is that fire is always in mind, not only on duty, and you view each situation in light of the possible hazard, and what the result would be. And that goes for bar B Q's, camp fires, wood stoves, etc. A little caution can save a great deal of grief, and tragedy. Still- this scene was VERY Impressive, a wonderful set along with the stunning music of course. Thanks for writing.. Stay safe -Bill in Canada

@Tomam001 Thanks. I think the old Met closed in the late 60's. Thanks to Utube and records/cd's we have all that wonderful music with us. I guess we're both lucky to have been born when, and where, and to whom we were. I wish everyone could be as lucky- sadly it seems to be growing less so for so many, and I worry about the young today. Though I'm sure our parents did as well. Good health, happiness- and much wonderful music- in the New Year. -Bill in Canada
This is amazing! I saw a modern, more grim version, (in Budapest) when tanks were rolling in the background, and to the same music bodybags were unloaded...
