When I was 7 and my sister 5 our parents thought that "Valley of the Dolls" was a children's movie.... That led to forty years of family jokes.
A new Steve Hayes review never fails to make may day and I can't think of a movie more suited here.
    Love it!

I had the same experience. My mom took us to a drive in to see this movies when I was about 10. I don’t think she knew what a “doll” was. And to this day, some 50+ years later, it’s still a favorite movie of mine and a running gag with my siblings. As a matter of fact, this movie was just on a few weeks ago, and my sister texted me to let me know it was on tv. So you know I had to watch it, again.

Steve, this is absolutely one of your best reviews!! I was 16 in 1967, and Valley of the Dolls was the first movie I ever went to see on my own. And, naturally, I blame the movie for ruining my life. (Just kidding!) This is the first time I've heard of Miss Hayward's conditions for accepting the role, and her remarks concerning Judy Garland show what a classy lady she was. Patty Duke discussed her performance as Neely many times over the years with great humility, humor, and self-criticism, and I will always admire her for that. And now, I have to go and heat up the lasagna. 😁

    OH!!! THE MEMORIES!!!
I saw it on the giant cinemascope screen of the fabled LOWE'S KINGS on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn a hopscotch away from Erasmus Hall high school where Barbra Streisand went to school and graduated.
I loved it and stayed to watch it again. The majestic LOWE'S was the perfect place to see Valley of the Dolls. I thought it was better than Gone with the Wind. I fell in love with Martin Milner, that's when I realized...well you know what we're celebrating. La Hayward was too fabulous, probably the greatest drag queen performance in history. I remember seeing it on the afternoon movie when I was a kid, all cut to ribbons but I was fascinated, because I had seen everyone in it very different parts. I realized it was a bit silly but it was also riveting. Then a few months later I found it in a box of books that my grandma kept, she got a lot of free books from giveaways from banks, (they did that a lot back then,) I asked her if I could take it and she said she had not read it yet but sure. (my family never censored what I read,) After I read it, when I returned it I warned her about a couple of scenes, but she laughed and said she was used to it. ( She also read Scruples and The Carpetbaggers.)

Just what the doctor ordered for a summer’s night-another fabulous movie review by the equally fabulous Steve! You really hit the bullseye talking about one of the Mt. Everests of schmaltz movies-Valley of the Dolls! I always wondered if Patty Duke was fitted for dentures after filming this opus with all of the scenery-chewing she did in this camp classic! Everyone either underacts, or overacts, in this movie! This, and that other triumph of 60s filmmaking, “The Oscar”, should be bookends on a shelf of truly wretchedly enjoyable films about the “dangers” of the entertainment industry. Over the years, I've collecetd as many novels as I can of the films I love and it's always a reveraltion to see how they were adapted to the screen. One that I can reccommend , which was the "Peyton Place" & " Valley Of The Diolls" of the 1940's, is " Kings Row" by Henry Bellamann. An absolute knock out rtead. Perfect for summer. You will be comoplete absorbed and love it. The film, considering the times, is a masterfpeice of how to condense and make a comroversial novel into a film classic. Give it a shot. Happy Summer! Love Susan Hayward in Valley of the Dolls. She owns every scene she's in. Why they didn't have her do her own singing I'll never understand. But I once read she was only on the set for two weeks...not enough time for her to get into singing mode?
I love your rendition of Susan standing up for Judy Garland. I've heard the story before but you add her Brooklyn no nonsense to it. She had a lot of integrity. Tough dame with a softer side. And she's one of the few who had the guts to stand up to Bette Davis. What's not to love?
And, yes, Sharon Tate was drop-dead gorgeous...although I wouldn't describe her as "stacked." Cute figure but Jane Russell she wasn't.
