I never tire of watching this. Mary Astor is so, so funny! My favorite Supporting Actress Oscar hands down. To this day, if one of us is running late, my partner and I say, "Don't miss your little train, Maggie."

If you have ever seen " The Bonfire of the Vanities " you know what I mean . What an abortion that turned out to be simply none of the actors were able to carry the characters they were supposed to portray .

This is one of the best channels on You Tube. Wonderful that he's back with another great review. I've seen this film and thought it was typical Warners/Davis melodrama. Had no idea of the back story. That's why Steve Hayes is a national treasure.
I saw this movie MANY years ago when I was maybe in elementary school or middle school, not old enough to really appreciate it, but I've always remembered "The Great Lie" and and that beautiful piano music. Thank you, Steve, for bringing this excellent film out of the past.

Mary Astor's performance today looks a lot like melodramatic overacting but she did deserve the Oscar she got for this. Mary Astor accomplished the nearly impossible task of outbitching Bette Davis and that is one reason why this film is still so watchable today.

Dear Steve, I am soooo glad you reviewed this! I remember seeing this film years ago and hoping those two actresses were having a good time off set, because the plot was such wonderful hokum. I thought Mary Astor was incredibly beautiful and evil in "The Maltese Falcon" and then I saw "The Palm Beach Story" (as I've told you before, I love Preston Sturges films) and couldn't believe how adorable she was in that. With her, it was as though whatever character she played came naturally to her - she seemed to flow into a part - and my God the talent she had, to do that. I'm so glad Bette Davis fought for her, because it seemed to me that Bette was very fair to other actresses if she respected them; (I don't blame her for hating Miriam Hopkins, by the way - I loathe Hopkins myself - so no wonder Goulding nearly had a heart attack). But both Bette David and Mary Astor are marvellous in this and frankly with the world in today's state an escape from reality is a good idea. By the way, we had spring yesterday and today it's freezing again, so tomorrow either a heatwave or snow. Oh, p.s. there is a clip of John Castle on TH-cam (he was so good as the detective inspector in the Miss Marple "A Murder Is Announced") talking about making "The Lion in Winter"; he said they were all freezing, and Katharine Hepburn gave him a brown sweater to wear under his costume and told him it had belonged to Spencer. His voice is so gorgeous that if he said, "I'm going to kill you" I'd say, "Oh, please!" Best wishes, Alida
I have had crush on Castle for years. He also turns up with Joan Hickson in "The Mirrior Cracked Form Side To Side", only this time they say he is her nephew. I loved his salt and pepper hair as he got older. He's very underrated and I think his perfomance in " The Lion In Winter" is so careful, understated and breathtaking. As for Mary Astor...I fear am an "Astor" fanatic. I even did my hair like hers in "The Great Lie" for my senior picture...a concept thwarted by threats of murder from my mother and probably for the best, when I look back on it. Two of the first Hollywood auto-bios I read were " My Story" and "Mary Astor: A LIfe On Film". Both incisive and fascinating. I helped my friend, Alexa Forman, do a marvelous documentary called " Scandal" The Trial Of Mary Astor" about the famous 1936 trial and custody battle and Astor's notorious diary concerning her love affair with George S. Kaufman, of all people. Its narrated by my neighbor, Lee Grant, with whom I had a nice chat on the street about Astor. I've met Mary's great gandson, who owns her Oscar, not the original plaque the Acadamy presented to her, before they gave the Supporting players actual statues. This is a "real Oscar" presented to her when she lived at The Motion Picture County Home ouside Los Angeles. They also gave one to Gale Sondergaard around the same time. Thanks to Alexa, I've spoken on the phone with Mary's daughter Marilyn, very nice. She told me that her mother was known throughout the studios as ' One Take Astor". She was a total pro and nailed it every time first take. My other favorite Astor films are; " Desert Fury" , "Act of Violence", " Midnight", The Hurricaine" and " The Prisoner Of Zenda", " Return To Peyton Place" ( which should have gotten her an Oscar nom) and " Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte".. Oh, the greatness of Bette! Not only did Bette not feel threatened by another extraordinary actress but she actively contributed to the expansion of the latter's part! And all because the film had to be better. Mary Astor is criminally forgotten today. She was a brilliant actress and a luminous presence.
I higly recoomend " Scandal" The Trial Of Mary Astor" a brilliant documentary by Alexa Forman concerning the famous diary scandal/ custody case that Mary went through in the ' 30's while she was filming "Dodsworth. " A brilliant actress and a gutsy woman!
This movie may have triggered my interest in classical music when I saw it at a very early age in the 60s. Tchaikovsky’ s Concerto no. 1 is such a beautiful gift to the music (and cinematic) world.
She would know. There were three nominees from Bette Davis films in that catagory that year. Bette never has gotten the credit she deserves for helping actresses along. She was loyal and knew how hard it was for women to get ahead. When she was at the peak of her powers in the 40's, she would consitently request the studios cast actresses whom she'd worked with before, like Mary Servoss, Virginia Brissac, Mary Wickes, Doris Lloyd and Hattie McDaniel. She was instrumental in helping Jane Bryan, Mary Astor, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Joan Loring. Olivia deHavilland admired her greatly and they were devoted friends. Granted, Davis was tempermental amd demanding, but she was also a game changer and when it came to women in films, everyone today owes her an enormous debt. Bette broke new boundries and paved the way. The only actresseses she had trouble with were Hopkins, Crawford, Dunaway and later poor Lillian Gish... and she once said she thought Bonita Granville was a bitch. LOL!

Fascinating behind the scenes info here. This film is a hoot, especially when it comes to the isolated cabin in the woods part, with that lonesome and ominous wind howling in the background as the craziness ensues between the two ladies. But naughty, naughty: you spoiled the mystery about Jewel Mayhew in "Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte", LOL. To be fair, I figure that most classic movie fans have seen that by now, so it's not a big deal. And, boy, is _that_ a fun film! One of my faves, oozing gothic horror and Southern melodrama. PS: I'm coveting your glamorous dolls. So nice!

I ❤️ Steve Hayes. The scene where Bette goes backstage to see Astor who’s still married to Pete is a catty back and forth for the ages. Steve does a bit of it at the end of the video. One of the most memorable aspects of this film is the music. The song "Slumber My Darling" is sung by both Hattie McDaniel (casually) and by one of nameless black children in a very lovely scene. Not sure if it's actually the boy's voice or if it's dubbed but it's so beautiful I wish it had been made into a formal record.

A must for Davis fans but I always preferred bad, bad Bette. She was much better the following year playing Stanley in IN THIS OUR LIFE (1942). I did like Lucille Watson however and feel she never gets enough credit. She was wonderful playing the naive mother of Bette in WATCH ON THE RHINE (1943). I wish we could have seen more of her.

Astor felt the same way about her Oscar win and said so in her autobiography ; "A Life On Film". I think Hollywood liked her and the fact that she more than held her own against Davis . I think it was also the combination of both roles that won her the award. Ironically three out of the five nominess for Best Supporting Actress that year were in Bette Davis movies: Astor in "The Great Lie", Patricia Collinge and Teresa Wright for "The Little Foxes". The Other two were Sara Allgood for "How Green Was My Valley" and Margaret Wycherly for Sergeant York".Thanks for watching!
I haven't seen this in ages. Interesting back story about re-writing the script. I miss the old fashioned device of one of the main characters being some sort of classical musical artist e.g. pianist, violinist or composer.
The way Astor delivers the line when she tells Bette to write a note for George Brent and she promises that she won’t read it slays me every time. She definitely out bitched Bette in this.

Hello, Steve.... would you consider doing “Angel Heart” with Robert DiNero and Mickey Rourk? It’s not Old Hollywood, but I thought the way it involved the audience was unique and very interesting. As the audience, we were as in the dark and confused as Mickey’s character was.... but as the story unfolded, he and we were slowly clued and gained insight at the same time, so it was as if we were part of the plot and not so separate from the characters. It was like audience participation and the technique served to deeply involve me in the story. Great acting, dark, moody cinematography, and a plot that gives you whiplash! Thank you for your consideration. I love your channel! Not only is it great fun, but is great and important art history.

Mine too. I have photos of Astor in this for years. became obsessed with her in this the first time I saw a still from it in "Robert Osborne's Pictorial HistorY Of The Acadaemy Awards". Well, she was determined to show a non- glamorized version of herself and always thought that this character and the one she played in "Old Aquaintance' were the most like her real as opposed to reel self. She even cut off her bangs so that the Hollywood hairsylists couldn't put one or the ugly styles they were perpetually saddled her with ( "Watch On the Rhine" & "The Letter") Mary Astor, on the other hand suggested and agred to cut her hair so short, which was very daring at the time and stated a fad. This movie may have triggered my interest in classical music when I saw it at a very early age in the 60s.
Tchaikovsky’ s Concerto no. 1 is such a beautiful gift to the music (and cinematic) world.

Loved Mary Astor in Dodsworth, 1936 movie. Great story too.
Mary Astor reportedly said, "Bette Davis handed me that Oscar on a silver platter."
She would know. There were three nominees from Bette Davis films in that catagory that year. Bette never has gotten the credit she deserves for helping actresses along. She was loyal and knew how hard it was for women to get ahead. When she was at the peak of her powers in the 40's, she would consitently request the studios cast actresses whom she'd worked with before, like Mary Servoss, Virginia Brissac, Mary Wickes, Doris Lloyd and Hattie McDaniel. She was instrumental in helping Jane Bryan, Mary Astor, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Joan Loring. Olivia deHavilland admired her greatly and they were devoted friends. Granted, Davis was tempermental amd demanding, but she was also a game changer and when it came to women in films, everyone today owes her an enormous debt. Bette broke new boundries and paved the way. The only actresseses she had trouble with were Hopkins, Crawford, Dunaway and later poor Lillian Gish... and she once said she thought Bonita Granville was a bitch. LOL!

Hiiiii Steve. This was sooo funny. I don't know this one and I LOVE Bette. So I'm gonna have to go find this. I just watched an old TV pilot Bette did on called "The Decorator" and another called "Dark Morning" (from a June Alison CBS Theater type show... Both in TH-cam). They were soooo good. Fascinating behind the scenes info here. This film is a hoot, especially when it comes to the isolated cabin in the woods part, with that lonesome and ominous wind howling in the background as the craziness ensues between the two ladies.
But naughty, naughty: you spoiled the mystery about Jewel Mayhew in "Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte", LOL. To be fair, I figure that most classic movie fans have seen that by now, so it's not a big deal. And, boy, is _that_ a fun film! One of my faves, oozing gothic horror and Southern melodrama.
PS: I'm coveting your glamorous dolls. So nice!

One of the most memorable aspects of this film is the music. The song "Slumber My Darling" is sung by both Hattie McDaniel (casually) and by one of nameless black children in a very lovely scene. Not sure if it's actually the boy's voice or if it's dubbed but it's so beautiful I wish it had been made into a formal record.

A must for Davis fans but I always preferred bad, bad Bette. She was much better the following year playing Stanley in IN THIS OUR LIFE (1942). I did like Lucille Watson however and feel she never gets enough credit. She was wonderful playing the naive mother of Bette in WATCH ON THE RHINE (1943). I wish we could have seen more of her.

Astor felt the same way about her Oscar win and said so in her autobiography ; "A Life On Film". I think Hollywood liked her and the fact that she more than held her own against Davis . I think it was also the combination of both roles that won her the award. Ironically three out of the five nominess for Best Supporting Actress that year were in Bette Davis movies: Astor in "The Great Lie", Patricia Collinge and Teresa Wright for "The Little Foxes". The Other two were Sara Allgood for "How Green Was My Valley" and Margaret Wycherly for Sergeant York".Thanks for watching!

I haven't seen this in ages. Interesting back story about re-writing the script. I miss the old fashioned device of one of the main characters being some sort of classical musical artist e.g. pianist, violinist or composer.

The way Astor delivers the line when she tells Bette to write a note for George Brent and she promises that she won’t read it slays me every time. She definitely out bitched Bette in this.

Hello, Steve.... would you consider doing “Angel Heart” with Robert DiNero and Mickey Rourk? It’s not Old Hollywood, but I thought the way it involved the audience was unique and very interesting. As the audience, we were as in the dark and confused as Mickey’s character was.... but as the story unfolded, he and we were slowly clued and gained insight at the same time, so it was as if we were part of the plot and not so separate from the characters. It was like audience participation and the technique served to deeply involve me in the story. Great acting, dark, moody cinematography, and a plot that gives you whiplash! Thank you for your consideration. I love your channel! Not only is it great fun, but is great and important art history.

Mine too. I have photos of Astor in this for years. became obsessed with her in this the first time I saw a still from it in "Robert Osborne's Pictorial HistorY Of The Acadaemy Awards". I was in highschool , had never seen it, but thought she was so beautiful. Then when I saw it, I went through the roof.

Well, she was determined to show a non- glamorized version of herself and always thought that this character and the one she played in "Old Aquaintance' were the most like her real as opposed to reel self. She even cut off her bangs so that the Hollywood hairsylists couldn't put one or the ugly styles they were perpetually saddled her with ( "Watch On the Rhine" & "The Letter") Mary Astor, on the other hand suggested and agred to cut her hair so short, which was very daring at the time and stated a fad.
