Outstanding performance of both - Keitel and De Niro. But Keitel is performing 110 percent. The posture, how he moves, constantly using his handkerchief. His gestures and how he tries to lighten up the mood. This scene shows impressive acting, really impressive.

I need to make one last comment about this Movie. This is one of the only Movies that I never get tired of watching and I think there are not many movies that I have seen in my 76 year old life that I can watch over and over again and again! The story, acting and the music created a mood that made you want more and more every time I watched!
Some movies I can watch annually but others just once or twice... and I find them better movies. Not sure what it is? Maybe as we age we see them a bit different from the last time we saw it? Like some new perspective and a line or a scene hits us differently? I'm not sure what it is about 70's NYC but just that sleazy look is so great in films, I just love it. With that said, it was probably awful to live there.

Doesn't get accepted by the upstanding citizen life when Betsy doesn't accept him - Here he doesn't even get accepted by the street rat life with Sport and Iris calling him square all the time accusing him of being a cop - I think this is the scene where travis realises he's truly alone - about 2:00 in where he says "I'm hip"
people keep lauding DeNiro's "staredown" as if it were another DeNiro character, a tough guy, but this is Travis Bickle. to me it's an obvious and impeccable portrayal of "awkward guy can't think of anything to say and is angry and confused and bothered and anxious" while the rapid-jabbing antagonist keeps peppering him with little demeaning ribbings. it's almost like the jock-dweeb dynamic, but with the added insanity of the hooker-pimp-loner dynamic, not to mention all the moving parts in the scene itself, and zooming out, the movie at large
I've only watched Taxi Driver twice, but each time I saw the credits - "Harvey Keitel" - and became aware that he was in the film, I promptly did a double take when I realised that he's Sport. True story. He just looks and acts so differently from the way he does in later roles, like in Reservoir Dogs, for instance. The sign of a truly great actor.
Yeah, biology is a funny thing although it's pretty consistent and there's no real surprise that the people in Taxi Driver look 39 years older now but jeez all the same.

Scorsese didn't write it, though he usually writes the films he directs, right? It's funny, because with Scorsese we're talking about a guy who kinda invented or defined a genre. I mean, Mean Streets isn't so original now, but in 1973? There was kinda nothing like it. There was the Godfather movies. There was White Heat or Kiss of Death or Scarface. And so with Goodfellas, yes, there have been other gangsta films, certainly. But Goodfellas was a game changer. I mean, let's just say it, the sheer realistic, visceral violence of the film hits so hard that it makes the film original. It set the standard. My grandparents literally left the theater as soon as they saw Billy Bats get stabbed to death with a butcher's knife, one minute into the film. But of course the directing is top notch..the directing, the cinematography, casting.. the _production_ , right?? Also, I don't know why, but i'm addicted to The Departed. I wish I could re-edit it a bit, but then it wouldn't be what it is. Martin cut it so quick I feel we miss what he's trying to say in certain scenes, yet at the same time I like the fast pacing. It's unique. Man, i'd be Mr. French for Halloween but no one would get it. 😄
Seriously, Harvey Keitel steals this scene!! He nails playing this dirty character! He delivers the dialogue in such a slimy way and the way he literally is able to take your attention off of De Niro and put onto Keitel. Fantastic performance by Keitel and a fantastic film for sure!
I disagree; De Niro's performance here is equally impressive as that of Keitel, the only difference is that De Niro's performance is so much more subtle and harder to notice the great subtleties.

I know the exact location of that doorway where Travis talks to - and later shoots - Sport. It's in the East Village here in NYC. It still has those same posts and everything. They're just painted a different color now.

Fun fact about Keitel's pimp character: Before filming started on this movie, Scorsese sent a couple of guys out into NYC, to find a real-life white pimp, whom he could use as inspiration for the character. Anyway, about 2 weeks later, they came back and told Scorsese that there wasn't a single white pimp, in the whole of the city.
yeah De Niro is a great actor (his early work), but he's much more than just facial expressions, his tone, demeanour, and some memorable lines too. The type of one-man-band actor that could hold your attention for an entire film, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas(although he had the support of some stellar actors on this one). And DeNiro and Scorsese, one of the best, if not the best combo in film-history. Two masters of their craft!
Well yeah, its super simple at first with the pan stopping at tha pimp when he approaches.They have a talk you could've somewhat predicted. Then as he's leaving he's called a cop again by pimp mac Keitel; this is when the angles switch to some over the shoulder dialogue-enhancing frames... So the beginning is mundane, and it's the end of the conversation that is emphasized.
Wonder how many takes they did for that scene ... DeNiro acted awkward the entire time, hardly said anything... just facial expressions and body movements... Keitel’s reactions were equivalent... great actors

I LOVE how NYC looks like (and sounds) in this scene, specially in the last frame, when Travis & Iriis walk away. When I see this scene, I kind of feel like walking the sunny streets of New York city and explore the place. I wonder where in town was this shot. By the way, acting in this movie is topnotch. It's on the south side of 13th Street between Third Avenue (the direction Travis came from) and Second Avenue. The blue hotel sign lasted until the 1980's I think, but it's long gone now.

In 1975 my now ex-wife was living at 19th and Second Avenue, which is about six blocks from the shootout scene. When looking at the climatic scene again, Travis drives in from 2nd Avenue, not 3rd, which would fit with the westbound traffic direction of that street.
when i was a kid - probably around 10 but certainly no younger - my older brother and i unintentionally saw this scene on television. it was playing during free HBO weekend. we were flipping through the stations looking for something to watch and turned this on during this scene. i remember laughing when i heard the dialogue because it had curse words in it, and for a few years after we had a running joke by incorrectly repeating 1:24 as "make your dick EX-PLODE". but that was it: that's the only thing i remembered about the scene (i couldn't even remember who was in the film, and certainly had no idea what it was called). ffwd to around 3-4 years later. by then i started to get into movies more seriously, first with '83 Scarface (thanks to the Geto Boys) then on to other Pacino and De Niro films and eventually silent/foreign/classic studio - you name it. taxi driver had been a film i'd long known about but had never seen (or so i thought). then came time for me to watch it (on VHS no less), which was around age 15. for any person the first time seeing this movie (i would hope, at least) is memorable. i was certainly enthralled, but when i got to this scene i thought "wait: this is the movie!"

people keep lauding DeNiro's "staredown" as if it were another DeNiro character, a tough guy, but this is Travis Bickle. to me it's an obvious and impeccable portrayal of "awkward guy can't think of anything to say and is angry and confused and bothered and anxious" while the rapid-jabbing antagonist keeps peppering him with little demeaning ribbings. it's almost like the jock-dweeb dynamic, but with the added insanity of the hooker-pimp-loner dynamic, not to mention all the moving parts in the scene itself, and zooming out, the movie at large
Telling someone there "a funny guy" in a scorcese movie is an immediate death sentence.
It's crazy how good this is in all aspects of writing, acting and undertone.
I've only watched Taxi Driver twice, but each time I saw the credits - "Harvey Keitel" - and became aware that he was in the film, I promptly did a double take when I realised that he's Sport. True story. He just looks and acts so differently from the way he does in later roles, like in Reservoir Dogs, for instance. The sign of a truly great actor.

It's funny, because with Scorsese we're talking about a guy who kinda invented or defined a genre. I mean, Mean Streets isn't so original now, but in 1973? There was kinda nothing like it. There was the Godfather movies. There was White Heat or Kiss of Death or Scarface. And so with Goodfellas, yes, there have been other gangsta films, certainly. But Goodfellas was a game changer.
I mean, let's just say it, the sheer realistic, visceral violence of the film hits so hard that it makes the film original. It set the standard. My grandparents literally left the theater as soon as they saw Billy Bats get stabbed to death with a butcher's knife, one minute into the film. But of course the directing is top notch..the directing, the cinematography, casting.. the _production_ , right??
Also, I don't know why, but i'm addicted to The Departed. I wish I could re-edit it a bit, but then it wouldn't be what it is. Martin cut it so quick I feel we miss what he's trying to say in certain scenes, yet at the same time I like the fast pacing. It's unique. Man, i'd be Mr. French for Halloween but no one would get it. 😄

Seriously, Harvey Keitel steals this scene!! He nails playing this dirty character! He delivers the dialogue in such a slimy way and the way he literally is able to take your attention off of De Niro and put onto Keitel. Fantastic performance by Keitel and a fantastic film for sure!

I disagree; De Niro's performance here is equally impressive as that of Keitel, the only difference is that De Niro's performance is so much more subtle and harder to notice the great subtleties.

Surprising how in shape Harvey Keitel is here, muscle definition, delts and I'll bet they weren't hitting the gym or working out like that in the 70s. You rarely see that kind of shape these days. Fun fact about Keitel's pimp character: Before filming started on this movie, Scorsese sent a couple of guys out into NYC, to find a real-life white pimp, whom he could use as inspiration for the character. Anyway, about 2 weeks later, they came back and told Scorsese that there wasn't a single white pimp, in the whole of the city.
Bickel may be a sociopath, but he was put on Earth to deal with worse.

yeah De Niro is a great actor (his early work), but he's much more than just facial expressions, his tone, demeanour, and some memorable lines too. The type of one-man-band actor that could hold your attention for an entire film, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas(although he had the support of some stellar actors on this one). And DeNiro and Scorsese, one of the best, if not the best combo in film-history. Two masters of their craft!

Well yeah, its super simple at first with the pan stopping at tha pimp when he approaches.They have a talk you could've somewhat predicted.
Then as he's leaving he's called a cop again by pimp mac Keitel; this is when the angles switch to some over the shoulder dialogue-enhancing frames...
So the beginning is mundane, and it's the end of the conversation that is emphasized.
it's this style that added to the greatness of movies of that era.

It's funny how most movies don't really know how to portray socially awkward moments. The gaps of silence, not knowing when you should turn away, etc. Yet in real life everyday these things happen to us.

It's on the south side of 13th Street between Third Avenue (the direction Travis came from) and Second Avenue. The blue hotel sign lasted until the 1980's I think, but it's long gone now.

In 1975 my now ex-wife was living at 19th and Second Avenue, which is about six blocks from the shootout scene. When looking at the climatic scene again, Travis drives in from 2nd Avenue, not 3rd, which would fit with the westbound traffic direction of that street.
when i was a kid - probably around 10 but certainly no younger - my older brother and i unintentionally saw this scene on television. it was playing during free HBO weekend. we were flipping through the stations looking for something to watch and turned this on during this scene. i remember laughing when i heard the dialogue because it had curse words in it, and for a few years after we had a running joke by incorrectly repeating 1:24 as "make your dick EX-PLODE". but that was it: that's the only thing i remembered about the scene (i couldn't even remember who was in the film, and certainly had no idea what it was called).
ffwd to around 3-4 years later. by then i started to get into movies more seriously, first with '83 Scarface (thanks to the Geto Boys) then on to other Pacino and De Niro films and eventually silent/foreign/classic studio - you name it. taxi driver had been a film i'd long known about but had never seen (or so i thought).
then came time for me to watch it (on VHS no less), which was around age 15. for any person the first time seeing this movie (i would hope, at least) is memorable. i was certainly enthralled, but when i got to this scene i thought "wait: this is the movie!"
