Welcome to a NEW kind of film-criticism series, built around the radical premise that just because "everyone knows" a movie is a classic doesn't mean it stops being worth a deeper look.
Superheroes dominate the blockbuster landscape now, but it wasn't long ago that no one knew just how big they could get - until Sam Raimi's groundbreaking SPIDER-MAN and it's equally-impressive sequel showed Hollywood the way; not only breaking box-office records but also changing the direction of an entire genre.
But now, after a decade and change filled with an inferior sequel, a pair of inexplicably-awful reboots AND with a new revival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe looming... do they still hold up? Do we remember them being great simply because of nostalgia? Or is our perception of them colored by the challenging moment in history during which they debuted?
    Are SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2... Really That Good?

"Part of the reason Spider-man works as a character, is because he is a good enough person to feel guilt that he isnt a better person."
The best description ive ever heard for my favorite character of all time.

I feel like it's important to make the comparison between Spiderman and Superman. Superman is a morally perfect person with the power to right any wrong perfectly. Spiderman is a morally uniquely good but imperfect person with the power to try to right any wrong but often mess up in painful, destructive ways. Superman is the hero peter WISHES he could be but who he can never become.

I always interpreted Jameson refusing to give up Peter as journalistic ethics. The complete lack of hesitation suggests that it was automatic, that no thought went into it. In the world of journalism, rule number one is to protect one's source.

In regards to the "you're messing with New York" scene...
I feel like this is something that will be lost with time, that future generations (Hell, generations that already exist) will not understand. But there are two moments from that brief period of time that I will never forget. The first was the moment that I sat in my class with a TV in the room playing the footage. I leaned over to my friend and asked "What is this, some documentary?" And he replied "This is live." The utter silence that followed until they cancelled the rest of the school day was nothing short of chilling. In the months that followed, I found myself thinking all too often of what I would do in case of an emergency, where could I go to get my hands on a gun if I had to. Nobody was safe anymore.
But then this movie came. That bridge scene was exactly the message a teenager like myself at the time needed to hear, delivered in just the way It needed to be for maximum effect. You see, for me Spider-Man wasn't just a comic book character, he was a god damn way of life. My earliest childhood memories are flooded with that red and blue costume, my dad had been raising me on Spider-Man since before I could walk. So here was the single most important fictional character in my life, and it was like he had just stepped out of the screen, put a hand on my shoulder, and said "We're gonna be okay."

Mary Jane is a rags to riches story. She's trying to go from being in an abusive home in a low economic situation to what she thinks will make her happy. Being with Prince Charming, Mr. Nice Guy and be a celebrity starlet. Ultimately she matures as well when she realizes that she doesn't really want the dreamboat public entity that is Spider-Man, (Although Spider-Man finds her desirable), when faced with the option she realizes that her feelings for Peter are more than just ideations. In the very same way that he perceives her changes, it's as she sees him come into a responsible man who's willing to make sacrifices selflessly that she realizes that's what she's truly been desiring all along.
Her arc is presented in her four relationship states:
Flash- Who's the most like her father. A go no-where jar head with no respect for women.
Harry- Who's the opposite of her father financially, but treats his woman like an ornament.
Spider-Man- Who's the epitome of her hopes and dreams. Spider-Man is seemingly able to keep her physically safe no matter where she is or what danger she is in. He can apparently escape any situation. He's popular. And he's crazy about her.
Peter- Who's impoverished but selfless. He genuinely cares about her beyond the physical aspect. He values her hopes and is supportive of her dreams. He even cares enough about her safety and well-being as a person that he's willing to let her go, to be with other people and thusly shows true devotion to her happiness.
If anything, Mary Jane is truly Peter's married half. She represents all of his weaknesses as strengths. Peter is someone who won't let himself be vain, Mary Jane is driven by vanity and a desire to be seen as more than how she sees herself. She's popular and hard working, maybe a little hair-brained. He's a "brilliant but lazy" dork who can't seem to find a balance.
They're both completely insecure. And in my opinion, it's one of the greatest love stories ever told in cinema.
Not to nitpick. But for real. I used to think the same thing until I rewatched it.
She's also the source for Peter's arc in the second movie.
He's not just torn between what he wants and what he knows is right, but it's a moral dilemma. When is there going to be a 'Spider-Man' to save him from his responsibility or 'save his life' and give him enough slack to be with Mary Jane? In the end of Spider-Man 2 it's pure catharsis for the audience. That's exactly what Spider-Man/Peter Parker needs. As well it's Mary-Jane finding that her two dream men that she was torn between in the first film, are actually one and the same.
It makes Peter's hopes and dreams feel possible.
Other than that, flawless analysis. I can die happy now.

It WOULD BE rags to riches if the third movie didn't have her flat out say that she'd never want to leave the stage. No TV. No movies. No voice acting. Literally just THE STAGE. You don't get rich on that. In entertainment terms? She isn't a reflection of Peter with "his weaknesses as strengths". She's making pretty much the same decisions as Peter. Well, what does "never wants to leave the stage mean"? 1. It means she's actually refusing vanity as much as possible. The nature of acting means you can't really reject vanity 100%, but "I will only act on the stage" (which Raimi's series gives us EVERY indication is HIS MJ's actual ideal) is very close to that. 2. Stage acting is a small, not overly popular field and it means she's probably not working at all between stage shows. So, who ISN'T "brilliant, but lazy"? 3. Agreed. They're both completely insecure. But "one of the greatest love stories in cinema"? Even as a "love story of neuroses", the Spider-Man trilogy isn't fit to lick the boots of Annie Hall. Heck, it's not fit to lick the boots of Marty.

    • @jeromyperez5532

Jeromy Perez Unfortunatly, the third film IS canon. It was made by Reimi, it takes place in the same universe and there hasn't been any evidence suggesting it isn't. I personally think MJ left a lot to be desired and I also felt Gwen Stacy from TAM did the love interest a lot better.

I have to say having recently rewatched the films, I have a slightly different perspective on the MJ character. Whilst I agree that certainly a lot more could have been done with her, and I admit that a lot of this has to do with reading deeper into a few lines of dialogue than was perhaps intended, now where I'm at the stage where I'm dating someone who has been victimized by men almost her entire life, I think I understand the character a lot more.
Basically, she's always been an actress who is playing the roles asked of her to get by. Her father expects her to be the doting daughter, and it actually isn't until she sees Pete start to come out of his shell that we see her actively rebel against him. But, if we assume that a lot of her formative years were spent being abused by her dad, it makes sense that she'd develop the ability to do what was expected of her as a defense mechanism and that going to men is what she's been taught to do from this abuse.
For Flash, she plays the role of arm candy, even though he doesn't appreciate her as anything more than a pretty face. For Harry, she fills a sort of similar role, although I think she saw some genuine good in Harry the same way Pete and Aunt May do, and realized that although he treats her as an object ("I want to buy you something. It'll make you feel better"), he was doing it from a position of genuine care for her because likewise, it was the way he'd been brought up to treat women. Finally, with Jameson, she plays the role of arm candy once more. You'll notice at the gala, she's not even announced, her job is simply to walk down the stairs on his arm, despite her being a noted Broadway actress. Whilst he genuinely loves and respects herl, he's perhaps a victim of having the spotlight always on him.
There's also the fact that all of her love interests are wealthy and powerful men within their spheres, which isn't something that is attractive to Mary-Jane so much as it is an obvious sign of protection and relative safety.
The reason she falls for Pete is because she never needs to act for him - he's always given her his love and infatuation and companionship unconditionally, without expecting anything from her other than that she's herself. Likewise, Spider-Man represents a similar pull for her because to her he represents freedom and liberty and the idea that there can be more to her life than constantly being trapped in homes that instead become stages.
Unfortunately Raimi only really hints at these things, which is where I feel the exploration of the character could have been a lot better, and maybe this is only me filling in blanks that aren't really there in my interpretation of the character as a result of having to look inwardly at my own partner so much, it's true that this isn't heavy-handedly put on a plate like a lot of other themes in the movies are. But ultimately, there's enough there that her character perhaps isn't quite as poorly represented as is often made out.

mcu movies are mountains away from having the ''best superhero movies'' title. Theyre all repetitive, no layer, no grounded story and all fun with poppy jokes for the generic audience. There was passion for the mcu movies before Disney, then it all became a moneymaking factory (Like Star Wars). But the TDK trilogy, Raimi SP, X-Men (the good ones)....these movies deserve the title because of how they revolutionized the genre with meaningful themes and deep exploration of the characters/story......(IMO)

Spiderman was the first movie I was truly entranced by as a kid. I had seen X-men, Harry Potter, even Lord of the Rings but none of them gripped me as much as the first Spiderman movie. I believed that Tobey Maguire could climb walls and swing between skyscrapers. I loved the visuals because they felt organic and I rooted for Peter throughout the movie. Danny Elfman's score and that title sequence were unlike anything I had seen before. And even though it was a comicbook movie, it still felt relatable to a seven year old girl. So maybe I'm a bit bias about it, but I still think these two films hold up and, sometimes, are even better than the most successful comic book films of today.

Sakura ThornSickle Now this is not a knock against you… But this is precisely why I don’t put much stock in people who profess to be huge fans of these movies. Because it was the very first Spiderman movie series released in theaters, they will always hold that special place in people’s hearts… To them, the nostalgia attached to these movies - - the wide eyed child moments, So to speak… Will always trump any movies coming after. Even if future Spiderman movies or superhero movies in general turn out to be OBJECTIVELY better than Sam Raimi’s series of Spiderman movies, because we have already seen superhero movies and it has become basically part of our lives these days - - thus making it actually relatively impossible to get that wide eyed child reaction out of us because we’ve already seen superheroes before- - They will always be counted as inferior to these movies.
Because the bias towards the very first Spiderman movies will be stronger than any obvious perception that a movie put against it - - say for example Captain America Civil War or avengers infinity war - - and so those movies will always be seen as inferior because they don’t duplicate or replicate that feeling that we had when we first saw one of our first superheroes on the big screen. It clouds judgment.
Another example, take Christopher Reeve As Superman. Because that was one of the very first moments where we actually saw the first superhero on the big screen… For a lot of people, that is the definitive Superman. Because that was one of the very first moments where we actually saw the him on the big screen… For a lot of people, that is the definitive depiction of Superman. All other attempts pale in comparison. For some of those people, it’s not because of any other reason other than nostalgia. I personally enjoyed those movies, but I recognize that it is not necessarily the definitive Superman. Same with these movies. I enjoy these Spiderman movies, but no, these movies are not “really that good.“ It was the very first time I saw one of my very favorite superheroes on the big screen and I loved it as a child… But I do not hold it to The same ridiculous golden standard has so many other people today. It is not “better than most superhero movies.” That is idiotic and it ignores the obvious fact that there are some objectively better written films with superheroes at the helm even today. Spiderman homecoming did an excellent job of showing a much more convincing scared teenager who just wanted to do the right thing jumping into things that were way out of his depth. They didn’t recycle the same tired “damsel in distress“ movie trope that Raimi’s films just kept repeating over and over again. The writing in the script in most of these movies was cheesy and dated, and yes I know that Spiderman is cheesy in some respects, but he still is created from themes that are current in today’s world. The Christopher Reeve Superman movies did not do the best job of showing that superman is an alien from another fucking planet, the real world implications of which would rock society to its core… Man of steel, while admittedly flawed in its execution still did a pretty good job of showing how initially xenophobic The world would be if it really happened.
People focus too much on the past. They focus so much on that, a lot of them can’t see the future in front of them. These movies are not “that good.“ They are good movies for their time, but Bob is letting nostalgia get in the way of him seeing the bigger picture. I had/have the same issue with certain video games - - like Zelda ocarina of time. That was the very first Zelda game I ever played and beat to completion over and over again… Because of this, it holds some very special meaning for me. For a while I considered it to be the very best… Until I started playing games like breath of the wild. I try my best not to let stuff like that get in the way.
      Nostalgia👏🏾 blinds 👏🏾people.👏🏾

    A few things:
1: God damn it's great to see one of these videos again.
2: The fact that J.K. Simmons plays the role of J. Jonah Jameson so perfectly is probably the reason he still voices the character any time he appears in a Marvel cartoon.
3: I always liked Doctor Octopus in the comics and cartoons. And in my opinion Alfred Molina fucking nails this role. Both as a mad genius and as a badass villain who can tear people apart.
4: I agree that the Green Goblin armor isn't perfect, though in my opinion it's very close. All it's missing is a purple shirt and a purple hood.
5: Personally I've always found Mary Jane very likable.
6: I'd take the cheesiness, the color, and the ham of the Sam Raimi Spider-man trilogy over the Amazing Spider-man movies any day.

+1987MartinT Yes, J.K. Simmons is awesome, no doubt. It's such a shame that 'Ultimate Spider-Man' sucks ass because this character deserves better treatment than that! We already had a perfectly good 'Spidey' cartoon with 'Spectacular Spider-Man', and it had to be canceled in favor of this insult of a 'Spidey' cartoon. If 'Ultimate' tried to be as good as 'Spectacular', I would've been fine with that, but I'm sorry. Spidey deserves better. We're in a sad state of affairs when good action cartoons can't grow, and thrive while crappy comedy cartoons are the norm. When 'My Little Pony' kicks more ass than 'Spider-Man', you've got a problem. (And in case your wondering, I'm a 'brony'.)

The one scene that you're missing in all this is one of the stronger character bits from the female cast.
May Parker, giving Peter a birthday gift, him trying to refuse it, and aunt May giving him a double-barreled blast of working-class pride. I *cannot* watch that without tearing up and it's the actress knocking a home run with her portrayal.
But I can't find fault with anything else you dropped good sir.
Kudos to you, to Sam Rami, and the entire cast of Spider-Man 1 & 2.

+Brett Dupree I would argue this idea to a point. While Blade WAS a Marvel property, I would not really call it a "Comic Book Movie". Its not played as a comic book but more of a Horror Action movie that just happened to be based on a Comic Book because Vampires enjoyed a rebirth in the mid and late 90s and Blade was played more so like that. The first big "Marvel" movie, played as a big Comic Book adaptation was X-Men. If you asked the common movie viewer what Blade was based off of, 9/10 would probably not know of its comic origins

Star Wars is a disgusting storm of cliches to the point the audience already knows the story, but plays to the strengths of those cliches. Although in Die Hard it was to make the audience pumped for more action; in Star Wars, it's used to get he brick and mortar of the story down quickly so they can get right to the worldbuilding and special effects

To me, I-VI are Really That Good. I know many people still disagree with me.
While IV is my least favorite (in that I still love it more than most things, but I feel the other five surpassed it because they had to), I think it fits the kind of film this series is for better than the others. I-III are a million times better than they're given credit for, but that means they're better suited for more of an "Actually Pretty Good" show. VI becomes great retroactively through the lens of I-III's recontextualizing of Anakin and Palpatine's story but is otherwise merely decent. V has the curious distinction of being both a truly great film and grossly overrated at the same time in comparison to its siblings. IV started it all and thus deserves its own episode.
I just do NOT want to see yet another piece on IV venerating V and dismissing VI and I-III, and that is why I'm not as excited as I want to be.

The Japanese Spider Man tokusatsu TV series is not a Super Sentai series (it's about Spider Man not the Super Sentai...). Its use of mecha did influence later versions of the Super Sentai though. There is also an earlier, but different, Spider Man manga by Ryoichi Ikegami.

I will always personally argue that Spiderman's web being an organic bodypart makes much more sense. since really, without it the only superpowers he really gets are sticking to walls and antenna-ish heightened senses, and that doesn't really denote "Spider" anymore than it denotes "Ant" or most other flightless bugs, and it's no more of a drastic physiological change than anything else. Plus I feel it's more plausible than a lower middle class kid from Queens putting together super advanced tech in his bedroom without ANYONE noticing. Like, forget super powers I wanna live in the dimension where a teenager's income can acquire super-science materials.

Why stop with the web shooting? The mechanical web shooters just seem to me like a strained way to try and explain something that could be explained in 2 seconds. I don't like the idea of giving Spider-Man any kind of gadgets. It turns him into some super genius engineer instead of a regular kid you had powers thrust upon him.

Even it it's not flat out told to us, judging off of all the other details that the first 2 spider man movies got, I can assume that that was the mindset for the people who made this movie. It's so much more believable that a dirt poor, but normal kid who got superpowers thrown at him, would get all those powers.

    • @darrenhood4033
      @darrenhood4033 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@tylergary5953 Mechanical web shooters complicate matters on both a writing standpoint, the budget, and of course executing it on film. You need the money to build a prop, you need to somehow incorporate it within a skintight outfit and now incorporate scenes building the contraption, training with it, and maybe malfunctioning. This can add unnecessary money to your budget and pad the run time of your movie that can best be spent elsewhere like character building, world building, or getting Peter from meek teenager to the Amazing Spider-Man as quick as you can.

I absolutely loved this video, Moviebob. The scenes where New Yorkers defend Spidey has always been looked at as a flaw by the people I talk to these films about and I never understood why. Strangely, nobody I hang around with seems to take the Raimi Spider-Man films seriously, they're always fixated on how mediocre the third part was. I understand that they're cheesy, but I've always addressed how necessary these movies were. Those scenes on the bridge and train stand as some of the finest examples of cinematic escapism around this century, something that reminds me of lines like "There's no place like home" from the Wizard of Oz or any other similar scene from the Golden Age of Hollywood. This was a fantastic analysis and this video, as well as that section in particular, is something I'll probably end up showing people next time they dismiss these two movies.

I disagree on your point about Spidey’s powers failing in 2 not working/being explained. His power failing scenes ALWAYS follow some emotional trauma. MJ kissing her new boyfriend-powers fail. MJ gets engaged and Peter has fight with Harry-powers fail. See the trend. Just a small thing you didn’t seem to pick up on.
I also almost cried during your bit on 9/11. I was so so young. Like 6 and wish I could remember if the theater I was in had that reaction. Really touching stuff.

***** Is it really worth hating that much? People like to act like like it's the worst comic book movie since Batman and Robin, but if you really think about it...is it really? People get so wrapped up in the fact that Peter does a little dance and Venom isn't in it enough, and suddenly, that constitutes being the worst thing ever? I'm sorry, but there are a lot worst superhero movies out there, for example:
      Both Fantastic 4's [and Fant4stic]
      Both Ghost Riders
      X-Men 3 and X Origins Wolverine
      Superman 3 and 4
      Both Joel Shumacher Batmans.
      Green Lantern
      Electra
      Catwoman
and yes, no matter how much no one wants to admit it, both Amazing Spider-Man movies.
All WAY worse than Spider-Man 3

I loved ALL THREE "Maguire Spideys", and try to watch them every Thanksgiving orNew Year's Season! I've seen SPIDER MAN 3 several times and still don't see what all the hubbub is about. Perhaps they didn't like the portrayal or short screen time of Venom?
I like Venom, but never loved the Eddie Brock character. To me, making him about Peter's age was an interesting spin on the character, especially when you compare him to Peter and Harry! It was also great to see how Harry's sacrifice reminded Peter of who he himself really is and how he could do the gesture that would soon follow. I think it's a powerful film for a movie about funny book characters!

Disagree on your dismissal of comic Doc Ock and Green Goblin. You are right, they serve as foils for Spider-Man in that they acquire immense power and abuse it for personal profit. But, you say that Green Goblin's character is enhanced because of his split personality, but what makes Norman's character compelling is that he IS the Goblin. He isn't a victim of his circumstances and a lab experiment gone wrong, he is simply everything that Peter isn't. With Doc Ock, you dismiss the character entirely, when once again he is an example of what an unchecked Peter would have been like. As for his aspirations, I wouldn't say using his power for profit and control is necessarily uninteresting.

    • @artstsym
      @artstsym 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I'm not sure how you think he dismissed Doc and Goblin, he's saying in and of themselves they wouldn't make for proper film fare. Their characterization in the comics is less important because we can expect to see them again and again, but they get one movie apiece, so we need to connect with them as quickly as possible, necessitating modest additions that compliment their warped reflections of Spiderman's morals. They're fine comic characters, and the movies are an excellent example of how to tweak them for a one-shot structure.

    • @theoneandonlymichaelmccormick

ruvelf Oh yeah. The thing about most Spider-Man villains is that most of them aren’t bad people per se as much as they are people VERY SIMILAR to Peter Parker himself that have given in to the temptation to look down on other people.
Doctor Octopus is a scientific genius who dedicates his life to altruism, but less out of a passion to make the world a better place and more out of an obligation to people he deemed lesser. And thusly, when he feels uncompensated in that altruism, he lashes out and commits criminal acts.
The Vulture is a working-class man who’s spent his entire life believing that hard work would bring him out of poverty, only to realize that his labor always has been, and was always meant to be, alienated. Now he robs banks out of a misguided kind of revenge.
The Green Goblin is man who’s torn apart because he needs to lead a double-life, and slowly begins to feel his alter-ego consume what’s actually left of his personality and his life. Only HIS alter-ego is an embodiment of every selfish, vindictive, and cruel impulse he’s ever had that is only strengthened by the anonymity that comes with wearing a mask.
Each of these people are examples of what Peter can become if he ever forgets that with great power comes great responsibility.

This is long overdue (for me to watch). I've seen people bashing the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies back when they were the only mainstream Spider-Man movies, and in the light of The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man Homecoming, it's become trendy to rag on these movies (mostly Spider-Man 3, but also occasionally the other two) for "not getting Spider-Man right" or for being too stupid or corny, what have you. Not only am I glad you're doing an epic review and analysis of why the first two Spider-Man movies, I'm REALLY glad that it's your second most popular video on TH-cam! You've earned it, my friend.
Edit: Something I see come up when it comes to comparing Tobey's Spider-Man to Tom Holland or the comics' Spider-Man is that Peter Parker should be uncool, but Spider-Man should be, yet you're presenting it like neither Peter or Spider-Man should be cool... Nothing really to comment on otherwise, I just find your take interesting.

The amount of detail you went into and how you analyzed these movies is beyond anything I've ever seen and I was truly entertained the whole video. And you're anaylysis on 9/11 and how it related to this movie and how you drew the comparisons with star wars and pulp fiction and all those other movies was simply brilliant. In my opinion, his first 2 spiderman movies are 2 of the greatest movies of all time. Easily the best superhero movies and these movies will never be topped(at least in the superhero world) and there won't ever be another spiderman movie that is as entertaining, colorful, delightful, detailed, and culturally impactful as these. Really, my only issue with these films is that one defining characteristic of Spider-Man was missing: the quips and banter. To me, Spidey was always the original motoermouth, and I loved that about him. Not all of the quips landed, but he was just running off, and I felt that was key to who he was, particularly as a New Yorker (from what I know of New Yorkers).
Anyway, if you read this: I really enjoy this series and also your MovieBob stuff. I think you do consistently rise to the challenge and you give new dimensions to these that I didn't necessarily see before. So kudos, sincerely.

The Avengers was in the process of slipping down my list of "best marvel movies", but thanks to his video it is back in the top three (firmly behind Winter Soldier and GotG though). This video...made me kind of understand why some people are still blinded by nostalgia, but I stand to my opinion that the first one was disappointing, the second one promising but only if the third had followed up properly and allowed some character development (which it didn't) and that I still haven't see a Spider-man movie which truly works to me. Though, yes, TAS 1 came the closest.

You want to know how good Spider-Man 2 is? I saw it at the drive in, it was the middle movie. I sat through White Chicks, on two separate occasions, for Spider-Man 2. That’s how good it is.

Your stance on the first Iron Man being less-impressive-now and such is entirely understandable, but "is anyone willing to argue this?" may have been the wrong choice. I think a lot of people would argue that, the film still has plenty of people raving over it.

+YossarianVanDriver Yeah, there are a few times that MovieBob's "rage reviewer" shtick from his current movie reviews leaks in to this one, and it's unfortunate. He has this cocky way of making offhand remarks about movies other than the one he's talking about and treating them as unassailable fact. ("I think we can all agree that...", in short.) It's fine to say a movie is bad if you go into detail, but when you're just mentioning a movie in passing, you can't pretend everyone has the same opinion as yourself. It's more honest as a reviewer to say you didn't like something (or even hated it) than to just dismiss a film entirely without explaining why, and it undermines your authority.

Batzarro maybe, but at least their more interesting than CGI lizard man that goes crazy, CGI battery man that 180s from geek to tough guy,and whatever they were doing with the goblin, which they threw in cause Gwen Stacy needed to die this movie apparently at least the villains don't feel thrown in(except maybe in iron man 3 , but that's more for a plot twist than feeling thrown in) my biggest problem with the amazing spidey movies was the romance, yeah raimi's spiderman had romance but it didn't feel like the whole movie, amazing spidey was literally a teen romance disguised as a super hero movie, when i go to a super hero movie I want things exploding, I want bad guys getting their face kicked in, I want high stakes, comedy and fun, I don't want twilight with spiderman for 90% of the film.

+YossarianVanDriver Iron Man 1 still, by far, the best Iron Man film, and the second best Marvel Studios movie in my opinion (Winter Soldier being the best)

You speak everything about why I loved Spider-Man in the first place.
Not that he's relatable, or even funny or even kind, but the fact that all of these inspired everyone in the first place, like the New York crowds caring for Spider-Man and giving him help in the most needed of times.

There's another thing that speaks to JJ's character in the Spider-Man 3 game that I feel is worth mentioning. One of the quest chains in that game is dealing with a bunch of terrorists who plant bombs all around the city; at the end of the quest chain, their leader kidnaps and confronts JJ, who recognizes him as Luke Carlyle. Carlyle resents JJ for writing an article that ruined his business, but JJ immediately, adamantly expresses no remorse for the article, as Carlyle was "ripping people off" and causing mass pollution. This isn't as substantial as him risking his own life to save Peter from the Goblin, sure, but it shows he has legitimate integrity as a journalist.

Dude, I was legitimately crying, especially during the impact section. I watched them the first time when I was like 5 years old and since that day I love these movies. I feel like you put into words what my heart and brain always knew (and some things they totally didn't) and I want to thank you for that. Not enough people give them the love or respect they deserve these days...
    Great job!

Also, the musical score! Especially in the more sincere moments (mostly between Peter and MJ). Oh the music in these parts of the movies hit just where it needs to to make you cry your heart out. And the dialogue and acting is more than enough to make you cry.
All this to say I can't watch these 2 movies without crying at least 3 times.

The Jameson protecting parker thing always made sense to me. For all of his douchebaggery J. Jonah Jameson is a newsman. That means he protects his sources. Its the core of almost every reporters moral idea. He wasnt protecting Peter Parker he was protecting news media. He was protecting the very core idea that was his entire life up to that point. It made perfect sense for Jameson to protect Peter at that point because if he gave him up he would no longer be a newsman he would just be a money grubbing editor who everyone hated. Instead he stood up for the integrity that defined his era of reporters as the last sliver of who he was before he became the boss.
