London Underground: Narrow Platform at Clapham North Station

  • Today’s film shows Clapham North Station on the Northern Line of the London Underground.
    Clapham North is one of the only two remaining deep-level Tube stations that have island platforms, the other being Clapham Common (one stop south).
    The island platform at this station is quite narrow, which can get dangerously crowded during rush hour.
    This film was shot during off-peak hours, and shows some Northern Line action at this station. All trains are formed of 1995 Tube Stock.
    Enjoy!

    First time I went to this platform was when I missed my stop during rush hour. I will never forget house crowded the trains were on train going the other direction. There were a bunch waiting and it took 3 trains before I eventually squeezed my way on

    Angel and Euston (Bank/Monument branch southbound) were originally island platforms but have since been reconfigured to single platforms, hence the wide platforms.
    Angel was rebuilt because the island platform was even narrower, unsafe during rush hour and overcrowding.
    Euston was rebuilt as the station was being reconfigured for the Victoria line coming in during the 1960s

    I reckon if they ever decide to install more platform doors - they should prioritise this station or if possible expand the platform.

    Strangely enough island platforms on the tube are coming back into fashion (Hatton Cross, the Heathrow stations except Terminal 4, and the Jubilee line extension) - just very much wider than those old ones!!! (And also in the case of the Jubilee line with barriers separating the platform from the track.) The old narrow ones like the Claphams were not really safe, especially during peak hours when the platforms are crowded. I remember sometimes using the old one at Angel (before the reconstruction) and it gave me the heebie-geebies.

      New platforms at Hounslow West, identical to Hatton Cross, apart from the colour scheme, were opened in 1975, at the same time as Hatton Cross opened too, and the old terminal platforms closed there, although the existing ticket hall and entrance were kept. Island platforms are fine, as long as they're wide enough!

    • @Shalott63
      @Shalott63 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianmcclavin Hi, thanks for the reminder about the reconstructed Hounslow West. Yes, as long as they're wide enough there's no problem with island platforms. Also for some reason the ones in the open air (as at Hounslow Central) don't seem to worry people so much even if they're relatively narrow (although I suspect Hounslow Central doesn't usually get as crowded as the Claphams!).

      At the time it was cheaper to build and it was incorporated into the Northern Line. It is too expensive to rebuild to single platforms and it is not on top of TfL to do list for now.

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many were built that way in the first place. This station and Clapham Common are the last two on the London Underground that survive in this form. Euston also had one, which was converted in the 60's when the Victoria Line was added there, and Angel in the early 90's.

      It seems like a good idea, doesn't it, for rail systems with unprotected platforms with third rails below to implement some type of station side power subdivision to allow removal of main power from the third rail and collect residual static charge, which could be life threatening at these voltages and currents, when it is not in use by a train.

      Charles Dreiser If you mean the metal, I think it is a ventilation shaft. If you mean the shape of the tunnel, it is because the station was dug out from the surface while the tunnels were dug by hand, so i would assume that the round shape was the best for the station since you would not need support pillars that would corrode, also round rooms/tunnels are stronger rather than square tunnels/rooms.

    • @Shalott63
