    They're using North American colours for the cables. Canada/USA/Some parts of Mexico. Black/Red/Blue - White - Green (L1,L2,L3,Neutral,CPC).
    Australia is Red/White/Blue - Black - Green.
    EU we all currently know as the standard used in BS7671:2018 and the old UK Standard of Red/Yellow/Blue are the two most common used across the rest of the world.

    Have you considered getting a smaller diameter SDS bit to reduce the size of your blowout? Our walls for most homes being nowhere near as thick I have a 610mm (2’) by 9.5mm (3/8”) that I drill through with and then follow that up with 19mm (3/4) or larger depending on the cabling.

    If you install more of these, don't put them anywhere they need to be weatherproof, especially if exposed to sunlight. It relies on the adhesive on the front panel label as part of the seal.

      Mike, my unit has been out in all weathers and in direct sunlight for two years and the front label and adhesive is fine. We've never had a failure for that issue after thousands of units. Rgs Dan (Ohme)

    Many of the Ohme units re supplied with type 2 or Commando plugs, so cable colours don't matter - not worth them buying a reel of brown/blue just for the hardwired version!

      I have seen green, yellow and red used too for 220v applications. Don't know which country the origin was but it was one of those cheap nasty import food serving trailers. All the ac wiring was jointed by twisting it together and tape too. The only thing that was good was the dual pole rcd's

      The Chinese will make different products to meet the various safety standards around the world. I don't know what colours are used in China but the North American colours are certainly not used in India, Pakistan, Australia or New Zealand. I doubt they are used in Africa either.
      Products sold in the EU should meet EU product standards, this unit doesn't.

    I've fitted ohme chargers. So simple. I still used an earth rod as the unit was installed 5 to 6m away from the property. I mounted the ev charger onto a railway sleeper which was mounted vertically into the ground. All connections were hidden on the back of the sleeper and only the charger and lead was visible. The rod was rammed into the soil near the charger.

    Installed one at the weekend (well my sparky did) with a Matt:E PEN unit. Got the Ohme via Octopus for £199 with a 32a commando on it and simply removed that and wired it through a Wiska box. Neat and simple install and it’s round the side of the house so less worried about the aesthetics.. cost me £360 plus a few beers for a my sparky mate so great value!

    One thing with this charger, don't recommend it to people living in crap signal areas it has been known to drop out and not charge (think the old E7 radio tele-switches). In which case you're better off with any other charger, a contactor and timer with an over-ride/boost function if you're looking for it to marry up to the tariff.

    I have a Chargemaster 7kW EV charger installed in feb 2017, as it was free with the Leaf I bought then. I haven't actually used it in a couple of years as the leaf went back in feb 2019, but have recently bought a Zoe.
    Is this PEN fault detection requirement a new thing? I don't have an external earth spike or a PEN fault device on my install, and am kind of wondering if I should get it retrofitted. After watching your vids I kind of feel like I should be replacing it with a Zappi but obviously I am not eligible for the OLEV grant, and if I were to pay for a Zappi it seems like I should get it as a 2nd charger for when we replace our other car. (although, I have a 60A main fuse so that probably wouldn't work too well!)

      From neutral to anyone color you would get a 120 unless you were in a 3-phase building and then you would get between phases usually 240 volts depending on standard.

    Smets 2 meters 4 or 5 port have the ability to have multiple tariff switches although we're being told they will be standardised rather than the old church hall agreed changes so ev chargers should definitely take advantage of the option to charge at the cheapest rate if not they will cost customers more than necessary.

  • @florisvdk

    Why not put in a 32 cee outlet and put on a 32 cee plug on the ev charger. it might even make it so you don't need the PEN-fault protection device. Not 100% on that because we are almost 100% TT here in Belgium

    • @Marcel_Germann
      @Marcel_Germann 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still required. You get the PEN by the DNO, the network operator. So you would have the same problem, no matter what you connect in between. The PEN is splitted in the service entrance box into a separate PE and N. If this PEN breaks, for example they damage the PEN during construction work on the street with an excavator, you'll get a massive problem. All metal surfaces, including the car, would become live at mains voltage.
      Here in Germany it's mandatory to have an earth electrode installed in your house, even in a TN-C-S system. That would solve the problem partially. The other solution is, we got three-phase in residentials. That is making it much easier for the chargers to detect problems, easier than it is in a single phase installation. In a three-phase system you got more reference points to detect a problem like a broken PEN. The voltage between every L and N should be 230V and 400V between the lines. If the PEN breaks the voltage between the line and the neutral (actually PEN) will float around between 0 and 400V, depending on the resistance of the connected appliances. But the voltage between the lines itself is still 400V. In three phase you got more usable reference points, in single phase you don't have that. You got 230V between two conductors, and so you can't detect if one of them failed...except you install an earth electrode and use that as a reference, but in that case you can also disconnect the PE supplied by the DNO and create a small TT installation.
      In that case the smallest appliances (by their demand), for example TVs, Radio and such things will be roasted by a surge up to 400V. Larger appliances like electric heaters will remain intact in most cases, because they'll only "see" a small voltage in the range of 1 or 2V.

    • @florisvdk
      @florisvdk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Marcel_Germann I can't imagine having to install a pen-fault detection device when installing an outside socket which a cee socket would be. Hence it might be a way to get around the requirement for one. I get why it needs to be there though.

    • @Marcel_Germann
      @Marcel_Germann 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@florisvdk The interesting thing is, this PEN fault detection is only required for EV chargers. I don't require that, even if I have a TN-C-S system here. My house got an earth electrode and the EV charger is a three-phase one.

    Just had one installed - the charger itself is great, but is only fully intelligent if you're connecting a car from a manufacturer whose API they can interface with, otherwise you have to tell it what % you want to add. As for trying to register and swap between 2 cars in the app or have 2 phones/apps - it's clearly not setup with that in mind. Charger great, app and website... disappointing (but I'm sure they'll improve the app).

      In the US green is ground, white or grey is neutral, everything else is live.
      Both brown and blue would get connected to live.
      Which interestingly would probably be the case anyway. (We connect to two different phases for 220v)

    • @Liberator975
      @Liberator975 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@b2gills i believe you have both ends of the transformer wiring at 220v then the neutral is a centre tap to the transformer. Giving 120vac between neutral and each phase. This is all from what i have learned from youtube 🤣

    • @b2gills
      @b2gills 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Liberator975 Exactly. But you wouldn't use neutral for a permanently wired charger. Which would mean that the two wires used for power would be live wires. Blue and brown are valid colors for llive wires. (Normally you would use black then red then blue then other colors.)
      By using both phases, you get twice the power for a given amperage cable. Which is why electric ovens don't typically use neutral. And it's also why hard wired car chargers don't use neutral.
      (I'm using phases loosely because they can either be two phases out of three, or opposite polarities of a single phase. Either way it would be wired the same with roughly the same voltage/power.)

    I am guessing that a person that buys an electric car automatically has a charger installed, when really some people might not need one.
    As example, I looked at a Kia, on a 13amp plug it took about 24hrs to fully charge, had a range of about 260 miles, my car sits in the garage most of the week, as I am in the van mostly, so people that don't use a car much could leave it plugged and save themselves a good chunk of money. Just an observation.

    I think the charger unit looks absolutely awful and the install sort of compounds it and makes it look like a right snakes wedding. Could you have not passed the charger supply tails through the meter cupboard and used a small JB mounted in the cupboard (and possibly even put the PEN breaker box in there too) and then take the supply from the consumer unit as demonstrated and then ( in the cleanest run possible)into the meter cupboard for termination either in the JB/PEN unit?

    • @MorzakEV

      Yes, you need to be using someone like octopus energy , bulb, or any of the other companies that have a variable rate tariff. To get on one of these tariffs, you will need a smart meter installed, and some of the older smart meters may not be compatible with your new supplier. The smart meter issue is a bit of a minefield, but if you don't have one currently, you can select a supplier that installs smart meters and get on their waiting list.
